How does regulation influence merchants and their businesses?

Understanding the principles of regulation can be tricky. There's a number of things merchants have to recognise in order to run a successful business. PSD2 enabled further development of open banking, customer authentication and much more, nevertheless, it had also brought along new challenges of its own. Where does the merchant stand in all this?
