The Tradesperson No-Show Saga

Um the last couple of weeks have been we've we've had some, I tell you, Adams, tradespeople. I'm gonna get straight into it. Bloody tradespeople. We we have had we have had up to here, up to here with tradespeople. Some tradespeople are very good, but if you're a tradespeople for the listeners, that's up to there. Up to there. We have had some good tradespeople, but the shit ones bloody hell, Williams. So here this right, here's the story. On Monday, we we worked our butts off trying to get some stuff done so that on Monday the plasterer could come and start its work. So Monday gets to nine o'clock. I'm there. Usually they come like eight, nine, ten. So okay. Eight o'clock, no, yeah, that's good. It's not that early. Nine o'clock, ten o'clock, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock. Okay, where is he? So I'll ring him. Like, are you still coming today? Oh, yeah, yeah, I'm gonna be down. Me and a guy are gonna come down, we'll start the boarding, we'll be there soon.

He said, It's oh yeah, yeah, ten minutes, I'll be there in ten minutes. Comes down at quarter past four on his own, looks at the job that he's already quoted before, it's like, oh yeah, how much how much stuff have we got? I was like, this stuff, this is the stuff you tell me to buy. These are the plaster boards that you told me we needed for the fucking job. And these are the bags of these are the bags of stuff we need. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, we might need some more. Okay. I'll be uh tomorrow, right? So I'm gonna come tomorrow, I'm gonna be here, I'm gonna be here at I'm gonna I'm not gonna get here till eleven o'clock tomorrow, and then I'll be here at nine o'clock the next day, eleven o'clock the next day. So the next day comes. Eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock, one o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock, four o'clock, five o'clock, rock. I'll ring him. And I'm like, uh sorry, no, I didn't ring him. I was like, okay, it's done a no show. It's done a no-show. Okay, fine. Wednesday time is gonna be here at nine o'clock. Nine o'clock, ten o'clock, eleven o'clock. And I'm like, okay, just I'm like, no, it's fine. He's you know, whatever. So it's six o'clock. I couldn't.

Are you actually coming tomorrow or what? He goes, uh huh. I said, Lee, you're meant to be here. Uh the fuck like he's pissed as a fart. So he'd be bollocks. He's meant to be here plastering my walls, putting pastaboard up, and he's in the pub getting bollocks. So I'm just like, okay, forget it. Put the phone down.

I was in the pub. And he was like, Did I ring you? I seem to remember speaking to you.

If you're not gonna turn up, most people will be like, okay, fine. Don't go to the pub and if you're in the pub, don't answer the phone. Um anyone who has never watched traitors, it's it's a effectively a game show about lying and deceit, and it's all nonsense, but it's quite it's really well made, and some of the um

First Look: A Binge Of TV

the celebrity ones are quite good. Some of the celebrities have got a funny, like they've um Alan Carr is hilarious. Alan Carr is hilarious. So celebrity traitors have been excellent. Um, do you watch The Boys? Or have you seen The Boys? So The Boys is flipping brilliant. It's so wrong. It's like it's it's satirical. So it's about superheroes.

Oh, you have to watch it. It's some of some of it's it's some of the scenes in The Boys have been the most shocked I've ever been watching TV. It's like, what they they made that? I I don't know if I can I I want to tell you about one of them. And so one of the superheroes is called Termite, and is a bit of a sexual fetish, is a is a bit of a sexual fiend, shall we say, and he get he can make himself really small, and he is also he likes other men, and he can go very small, and I'll leave it at that.

I I it's one of the strangest things I've ever seen. Anyway, the boys has a spin-off series called Gen V. Gen V season two is finished now, and I've finished watching it, and it's all so brilliant, really liked it. So, yeah, and I finally got round to watching the third Squid Game season because what's the first two, and I hadn't got round to watching the season three, and it's just been wet and miserable, and I'm like, I found time recently to actually sit down and watch TV, and I've I've really enjoyed it. I've just been enjoying it. Oh, and uh the best one we've seen out of all of them is Blue Lights season three. Which so blue lights is set in Belfast, which is always cool. The guys who wrote it actually wrote it in the office above my office, which is hilarious in in uh City East in Belfast, and it's just it's like uh it's a uh police show about Northern Ireland, and it's about the squaddies and young squaddies. So at the end of uh season one, they were just new. Season two, they're a bit more obviously in the second year, season three now, it's a bit further down, and it's just brilliant. It's like funny, kind, full of heart, and beautifully shot, beautifully acted, beautifully written. It's one of my favourite ever shows. It's just brilliant. So TV at the mix got really good. Yeah, you do, because it's it's obviously filmed in Belfast and it's about Belfast, and it's just it does some parts of it make it look lovely, some parts of it you think I'd never go there. It's obviously some of the parts are extreme, and you know, you know, the troubles of Northern Ireland are well documented, but it's it's it's anyone who wants everyone to come to Northern Ireland, email first looknames at OLUC.com. I'll be your tour guide. Take people around, it's a beautiful place, but it's really good. So like TV at the minute's just been really good. I feel like TV's been good. So Gen V and the boys, excellent. Celebrity traitors is well worth a watch on the BBC. Squid Game has been great. Again, wrong TV, Gen V, the boys Squid Game, all really wrong.

All of it is pretty trashy, none other than blue lights. Blue lights is actually really good and well written. The rest of it's all just nonsense, but great for putting your thumb up bum, mind in neutral, escapism.

So my first look, um again, go back a little bit, uh a couple months. Um, but um a first look at uh nursery. So uh Logan started nursery a little while back. Oh nice. Um just uh yeah, just a little first look at that. So as a um as a uh first time parent for nursery, a lot of it's all new, isn't it? It's all new. So uh yeah, a bit of insight for others out there might help, who knows? But yeah, so yeah, went to nursery, he loves it. We're very lucky with the fact that he just runs in. He doesn't, you know, there's no sort of upset. He's just like see ya Off he goes. So there's there's a bit of that element of but uh yeah, the Wi-Fi has been really good with you know not making it too much of a not too much of a thing in terms of you know giving them big hugs and oh gonna miss you, da da da da. It's like yeah see you later type thing in a nice way, obviously. But yeah, no, he's he's really enjoying it. You get these so you you get a little app. So a lot of you know some parents might not know this before they the first born goes to or only born goes to um goes to nursery,

Nursery Beginnings And Settling In

but you get a little app that gives you little photo updates and things, so you know you do get to see what's going on. We're very lucky with our nursery. There's loads of activities of outside and inside activities. They've got a a nursery dog as well called Honey. That's cool, and they've got me. He loves all the sort of train sets and the blocks, and yeah, there's all sorts of things there. And yeah, he comes back with different stories, and it's difficult because there's some stories and then it's like you're trying to decipher the story and what's a real and what's not, and then some stories you're like you start panicking, and like because the other day he was telling me about how he saved he saved one of the kids because uh they were locked in a cupboard, which didn't happen. But then my brain's going, hang on, did uh one of the staff just lock a kid in a cupboard? Uh yeah, that's concerning. But they didn't. They didn't, or did they? Who knows?

But it is, it is. But I've had uh probably at least three different colds since he's been to nursery. So the stories are true when they go to nurse, they do bring back all sorts of illness. But it's all all good for the immune system. We found for Logan they put together like a little sort of a storybook, uh, storyboard in terms of so all the different uh members of staff and the different rooms and things. So after his like initial session and when he went to nursery, you know, we can look at this book and go, Oh, this is safe, you know, what's that room? And he gets to talk about it, and yeah, we found that really helpful with him sort of adapting uh adapting to it because it's they have a little session to begin with, but then it is very much in the deep end type thing. But uh yeah, he loves it. It's great.

I remember from our I remember from our perspective it was almost a necessity because at the time when we had Brady Bunch, uh we didn't have a lot of Leslie Ann didn't have a lot of maternity plan, I was self-employed, so it was like actually nursery was an essential because we had to go back to work because we needed the money. So, like, how have you found it in terms of like okay, with you know Logan's been there so much, the house probably

felt quite quiet because obviously like Logan is post-COVID as well. You I hope you know why we're saying this in the podcast, but you work at home, so you know you can you can see him in the day, and now like when you're gonna say, Oh, he's not here. Like, how have you have you and Georgie found that?

Yeah, well, I mean, Georgie's working part-time, so it's not a full week, so that that sort of helps. Um, so he's not there all week. And when he started, it was the same time as she started part-time work, so for her it was easier because it wasn't like he's gone to nursery and suddenly there's nothing to be doing. So she started a new job at the same time, so she had that distractions and things like that. But yeah, obviously there's always going to be um you know, because he's uh he's out of earshot and eyesight, and you're like and then you hear these weird stories and you start getting paranoid and you're like but um Yeah, that that nursery is um pay for government-wise, you know, people pay for the snacks and food and stuff. Yeah but you know, we we're very lucky. We've got sort of you know, we hear stories about people that they struggle because they've got to pay for pay for it because the household income's over a hundred grand, and we're like that's not a problem for us.

No. See when I it is lucky, like we missed it. So when Brain was young enough for nursery, there was no free nursery places, and we missed it again, and then living in it was different. The rules changed in England as we had moved to Northern Ireland, and Northern Ireland didn't catch up. So by the time Brad Brady was in school, yeah, they were starting to bring in like free childcare places and stuff for overtos, and but we missed it all. So we we f we really struggled because it was like, okay, going to work, one of the salaries is basically paying for the nursery, and then you feel guilty about it, but you're like, especially with Lesliam being like a skilled worker with nursing and stuff. If you don't work, you have you have to re-register, so you have to you have to uh what's the what's the word? Oh my goodness, it's uh you have to revalidate, like so you and to revalidate, you have to have done a certain amount of hours and stuff. And if you're at home looking after your kid, you're not doing your hours and all that kind of stuff. So it's like it's chicken and egg, and it's hard. It was really difficult. I'm glad that the law has changed now because I'm like, okay, so we've created this society where you can't live like a even a normal life. I think it's it's hard to live on one salary.

And obviously, you know, it's seen well not sexist, but at the time it was very much the dad would work and the mum would be at home. Yeah. Which but now it should be a case of that's fine, but also you know, the dad can stay at home and the mum goes to work. But it shouldn't be a case of both have to go to work. Exactly. Yeah, totally.

No, I remember like I remember changing because my mum talking to my parents about that, like my mum had to work half like part-time. So my dad worked full-time, mum part-time. That when she wasn't at work, she was looking after kids, which was hard work. Like, looking after kids is it's a full-time job, especially because you want to do it well. You got like the one sending four jobs, I think. Yeah, that's it, because to pay the bills and stuff. So it's not it's not that it's like the man should earn the money, it can be the man or the woman should earn the money, but looking after the kids shouldn't be seen as kind of a secondary job either, and just you know, if if you choose to send your kid to nursery, it should be kind of okay, it's the choice and it helps to socialise the child and stuff, but it should it should be, I think it feels like it should be something that's helped. I'm glad it is being helped, and people are at kids are having that access to it, and you know, helping working parents be able to actually get to work even if it's part-time for a little bit, so they can for their own sanity, you know. A lot of a lot of mums or dads would be like, No, I actually want to go to work for a couple of days a week because I need to see people, I need to socialise, and you know, so I'm glad that the things are changing like that. Do still wish you we that the society was affordable enough that you could just live on one person's salary and one of you could be a house person.

Oh dear. Peace be the journey. Peace be the journey. We've gone on so many tangents this episode. Or episodes. Peace be the journey. Gonna see my niece tomorrow, which would be nice. Oh, very nice. For her birthday. And uh but last time I was there, I had a little mini first look. But had a go on Mario Kart Switch. Which is uh yeah, so that's fun. So we'll play that with my niece. I've been playing Mario Kart since well, since the GameCube days at least, if not before. But yeah, sat there with my niece, playing Mario Kart. And I was like, wow, the next generation, and I'm here playing Mario Kart. And she's you know, well, she's nine this weekend, but she's eight. And I still took pride in beating her at Mario Kart. And then uh then I played my sister as well, and then she was she was in the lead, and then that that rush you get as you do a little you take the last corner, you do the little sort of extra boost dash, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, just pipped her, pipped her over this line.

Uh you know, I'm in my forties now, but I'm still it's still enjoyed. I still enjoyed that. So, yeah, well after so after I beat my sister and my eight-year-old niece at Maricart at their place. When I did feel old and middle-age, was so when I stood up, I was in there, I was in one of my niece's chairs, I stood up, the chair was still connected and moulded around my back, so brilliant. Which my niece found hilarious. There you go.
