For all his failings, Lehi managed to keep the peace between Laman, Nephi, and the family factions that followed each. Nephi obviously struggles with positive self-talk and his neurosis manifests as saying the quiet parts out loud. Normally, not a bit deal but following his father's death, this results in creating quite a scene in front of his brothers' families and Mrs. Nephi sees that this isn't going to go well plus she understands that if they stick around, she and her kids will be the religious nutso outcasts of the clan, so she manipulates Nephi into making the only call that protects her situation–Nephi leads a tiny band into the jungle to become cult-leader and king. Instead of being at the bottom of the heap, Mrs. Nephi has created a tiny pond where she and her husband are the big fish.
