All to discover that to be honest, it"},{"startTime":115.49,"endTime":119.08999999999999,"body":"can't. I can write a book, but that book doesn't sound like me and it"},{"startTime":119.08999999999999,"endTime":122.92999999999999,"body":"takes longer to do because of that. That said, I"},{"startTime":122.92999999999999,"endTime":126.64999999999999,"body":"have found where these tools can help me to actually speed up the"},{"startTime":126.64999999999999,"endTime":130.49,"body":"process. So let's dig into that a little bit. Step 1"},{"startTime":130.65,"endTime":134.41,"body":"Getting your initial transcription with AI using ChatGPT"},{"startTime":134.65,"endTime":138.37,"body":"or some similar sort of tools. There's a whole range of things that we"},{"startTime":138.37,"endTime":141.98,"body":"can do to take our audio and"},{"startTime":141.98,"endTime":145.78,"body":"transcribe it into text form. AI is really good at doing"},{"startTime":145.78,"endTime":148.66,"body":"this, but it honestly depends on your accent."},{"startTime":149.14,"endTime":152.42,"body":"Descript, for example, that I use for my podcast can't understand"},{"startTime":152.5,"endTime":156.22,"body":"Australian, so the transcripts you get from descript are pretty"},{"startTime":156.22,"endTime":159.66,"body":"useless. ChatGPT really won't do straight"},{"startTime":159.66,"endTime":163.46,"body":"transcript. It can't do audio to transcript at this stage."},{"startTime":164.18,"endTime":167.7,"body":"On my Mac I have a little program that's downloaded called MacWhisper"},{"startTime":168.35,"endTime":172.15,"body":"and MacWhisper can do transcriptions and it's very good. You can"},{"startTime":172.15,"endTime":175.91,"body":"also link it into OpenAI to use their system as well"},{"startTime":175.91,"endTime":179.63,"body":"to improve the transcription. Alternatively, I"},{"startTime":179.63,"endTime":183.31,"body":"use CastMagic for my transcribing and it is the tool that I"},{"startTime":183.31,"endTime":186.98999999999998,"body":"prefer by far. It seems to be the most accurate and"},{"startTime":186.98999999999998,"endTime":190.63,"body":"the best way to do it. Remember, the content that you're"},{"startTime":190.63,"endTime":194.31,"body":"putting through is raw and so it'll have plenty of mistakes in it when you"},{"startTime":194.31,"endTime":198.01,"body":"read it through. Even though it is a transcription, it is"},{"startTime":198.01,"endTime":201.85,"body":"the spoken word, so you'll have ums and ahs and spaces and"},{"startTime":201.85,"endTime":205.48999999999998,"body":"all sorts of weird things going on there. Even where for example you"},{"startTime":205.48999999999998,"endTime":209.29,"body":"say okay and it writes K with a question mark after"},{"startTime":209.29,"endTime":212.73,"body":"it. So you get all sorts of weird things coming out in transcription."},{"startTime":212.73,"endTime":216.29,"body":"AI in the right dialect such as Australian English can be really"},{"startTime":216.29,"endTime":219.89,"body":"useful here and massively time saving Getting transcripts"},{"startTime":220.45,"endTime":224.29,"body":"the accuracy can be a big problem with many tools, but it is getting better"},{"startTime":224.97,"endTime":228.57,"body":"and in my opinion the best out of all the tools I've tried is MacWhisper"},{"startTime":228.57,"endTime":232.32999999999998,"body":"or Castmagic. But look, be careful what you ask it to"},{"startTime":232.32999999999998,"endTime":236.01,"body":"do. Eg. Once you have your transcript,"},{"startTime":236.01,"endTime":239.41,"body":"if you ask Chat GPT to then take that transcript and"},{"startTime":239.41,"endTime":242.97,"body":"proofread it, it will do things like it will cut your text from"},{"startTime":242.97,"endTime":245.60999999999999,"body":"1500 words to 750 words"},{"startTime":246.48999999999998,"endTime":250.21,"body":"because the way it proofreads is quite thorough and in"},{"startTime":250.21,"endTime":253.88,"body":"depth. But but it also completely changes the amount of"},{"startTime":253.88,"endTime":257.72,"body":"content you got and it can honestly change the"},{"startTime":257.72,"endTime":261.40000000000003,"body":"whole tone of the content. So what you are trying to say is completely"},{"startTime":261.40000000000003,"endTime":265.0,"body":"reinterpreted. Going from spoken to written is painful. I"},{"startTime":265.56,"endTime":268.76000000000005,"body":"never realized that we speak entirely different to how we write."},{"startTime":269.32000000000005,"endTime":273.08000000000004,"body":"AI doesn't seem to get the nuances in how"},{"startTime":273.08000000000004,"endTime":276.20000000000005,"body":"we speak when it converts it to written form."},{"startTime":276.89000000000004,"endTime":280.73,"body":"I was recently talking with Dixie Carlton from Indie Experts Publishing recently"},{"startTime":280.97,"endTime":284.81,"body":"and she said that publishers like herself were seeing that AI is really only"},{"startTime":284.81,"endTime":288.49,"body":"useful in the initial stages of book or content"},{"startTime":288.57000000000005,"endTime":292.329,"body":"writing for the planning and brainstorming sort of sections"},{"startTime":292.329,"endTime":296.01000000000005,"body":"of the book writing process. I tend to agree when you're trying"},{"startTime":296.01000000000005,"endTime":299.49,"body":"to produce long content especially. I've taken a"},{"startTime":299.49,"endTime":301.93,"body":"podcast episode and fed it into ChatGPT,"},{"startTime":303.08000000000004,"endTime":306.52000000000004,"body":"Magic, Book of Fire, Cast Magic and a dozen other AI"},{"startTime":306.52000000000004,"endTime":310.28000000000003,"body":"tools and they all fail on"},{"startTime":310.28000000000003,"endTime":313.72,"body":"producing good long form content that"},{"startTime":313.72,"endTime":316.76000000000005,"body":"reflects the initial point of view and"},{"startTime":317.88,"endTime":321.56,"body":"style of my speaking, they won't work great. If you want"},{"startTime":321.56,"endTime":325.28000000000003,"body":"to produce short ebooks or articles though for short books, great. But"},{"startTime":325.28000000000003,"endTime":329.04,"body":"if you're trying to write a chapter from a podcast episode, it's not"},{"startTime":329.04,"endTime":332.04,"body":"really there yet. So once you have a good transcript, what should you do then?"},{"startTime":332.32000000000005,"endTime":336.16,"body":"It should be Fine. Right note. This is where AI"},{"startTime":336.16,"endTime":340.0,"body":"gets really sketchy and unreliable. Talked a little bit"},{"startTime":340.0,"endTime":343.72,"body":"about this, but let's dig further into proofreading"},{"startTime":343.72,"endTime":347.16,"body":"and fixing the raw content of the output of the"},{"startTime":347.16,"endTime":350.8,"body":"transcription. I've tried proofreading with ChatGPT using a"},{"startTime":350.8,"endTime":354.32000000000005,"body":"really good prompt that everybody said works, but it"},{"startTime":354.40000000000003,"endTime":358.21000000000004,"body":"cut my content in half. Yeah, it was better, but"},{"startTime":358.21000000000004,"endTime":361.21000000000004,"body":"with all those words gone, the whole point of taking"},{"startTime":361.85,"endTime":365.53000000000003,"body":"all the spoken words and turning it into a chapter or an article"},{"startTime":365.93,"endTime":369.65000000000003,"body":"was to keep the amount of content instead of cutting it"},{"startTime":369.65000000000003,"endTime":373.29,"body":"right down. The other thing was it really didn't sound like me either."},{"startTime":373.29,"endTime":376.65000000000003,"body":"It had lost my style, my way of speaking."},{"startTime":377.61,"endTime":381.29,"body":"Yes, I had trained the GPT on my content as well, so it already"},{"startTime":381.37,"endTime":385.15000000000003,"body":"was familiar with my written content and my spoken content."},{"startTime":385.71000000000004,"endTime":388.91,"body":"And I did it multiple ways using a myriad of prompts, but"},{"startTime":389.55,"endTime":393.39000000000004,"body":"I just didn't feel right about it. I started doing it manually"},{"startTime":393.71000000000004,"endTime":397.15000000000003,"body":"and so I was going through the text, just actually making physical"},{"startTime":397.15000000000003,"endTime":400.59000000000003,"body":"changes myself and I then I came to understand"},{"startTime":400.75,"endTime":404.59000000000003,"body":"what it was doing. When I started manually reviewing my"},{"startTime":404.59000000000003,"endTime":408.07000000000005,"body":"transcript, I was rewriting whole paragraphs and"},{"startTime":408.07000000000005,"endTime":411.14000000000004,"body":"removing chunks too, just like the AI was."},{"startTime":411.86,"endTime":415.54,"body":"It seems that when you talk, you blurt out a range of words, even"},{"startTime":415.54,"endTime":419.34000000000003,"body":"if you plan and bullet point your content before recording. I have been playing"},{"startTime":419.34000000000003,"endTime":423.18,"body":"with the free version of Grammarly, so I thought that I would try it and"},{"startTime":423.18,"endTime":425.85900000000004,"body":"see how it went. Just going through the"},{"startTime":426.42,"endTime":429.98,"body":"transcript and looking at it from Grammarly's perspective, which"},{"startTime":429.98,"endTime":433.70000000000005,"body":"tends to be mainly commas, full stops and different things"},{"startTime":433.70000000000005,"endTime":437.48,"body":"like that, and also sentence structure, but not so much spelling and"},{"startTime":437.48,"endTime":441.04,"body":"other things. So there were good and bad things using"},{"startTime":441.04,"endTime":444.88,"body":"Grammarly. E. G. It keeps finding changes when I fix"},{"startTime":444.88,"endTime":448.68,"body":"what it says is wrong, so I fix it and then it says no, it's"},{"startTime":448.68,"endTime":452.40000000000003,"body":"still not worded, so it rewrites the sentence again. It did give me the"},{"startTime":452.40000000000003,"endTime":456.08000000000004,"body":"option to whether to reject or accept the suggested"},{"startTime":456.08000000000004,"endTime":459.12,"body":"changes, and that I really liked because it meant that I could keep the context"},{"startTime":459.12,"endTime":462.73,"body":"of what I was saying. Sometimes it would take something that was"},{"startTime":462.81,"endTime":466.57000000000005,"body":"negative and turn it into a positive, which actually changed the whole"},{"startTime":467.05,"endTime":469.53000000000003,"body":"structure of the sentence, but also changed the meaning."},{"startTime":470.57000000000005,"endTime":473.85,"body":"So I could reject those using Grammarly, which would be really cool."},{"startTime":474.41,"endTime":477.45000000000005,"body":"And so it doesn't get the overall thinking of the context."},{"startTime":478.33000000000004,"endTime":481.97,"body":"That's a problem. AI does see the whole picture before it starts"},{"startTime":481.97,"endTime":485.41,"body":"editing. It overcame the whole rewriting thing that"},{"startTime":485.41,"endTime":489.18,"body":"ChatGPT does. But I could keep my style but make"},{"startTime":489.18,"endTime":492.66,"body":"it more readable. When you upload the content to"},{"startTime":492.66,"endTime":496.26000000000005,"body":"review, you can choose the style so domain"},{"startTime":496.26000000000005,"endTime":499.86,"body":"Intent, audience and formality. And that"},{"startTime":500.1,"endTime":503.70000000000005,"body":"actually makes it a little bit better. Now I decided in the end"},{"startTime":504.02000000000004,"endTime":507.06,"body":"with the book that I was creating on leadership,"},{"startTime":507.62,"endTime":510.82000000000005,"body":"that I would go with a conversation style book. So a series of conversations"},{"startTime":511.54,"endTime":514.66,"body":"because I wanted to keep my style. Now I didn't have to. I could have"},{"startTime":514.66,"endTime":518.51,"body":"gone with all the suggestions that Grammarly was pushing out, but"},{"startTime":518.67,"endTime":521.7900000000001,"body":"it really did a good job in the end of fixing commas,"},{"startTime":521.87,"endTime":524.91,"body":"structure, sentence structure, and a mile of things."},{"startTime":525.5500000000001,"endTime":528.91,"body":"But often it didn't see capital letters in the middle of words,"},{"startTime":529.3100000000001,"endTime":532.83,"body":"non words like k instead of okay, it didn't add"},{"startTime":532.83,"endTime":536.63,"body":"capitals to the starts of sentences, all sorts of weird things like"},{"startTime":536.63,"endTime":539.95,"body":"that. So Grammarly seems to be all about grammar. Who knew?"},{"startTime":540.19,"endTime":543.9200000000001,"body":"But its proofreading really sucks. It speeds up the"},{"startTime":543.9200000000001,"endTime":547.08,"body":"process and it really does make the text better,"},{"startTime":547.72,"endTime":551.4,"body":"but you can't rely on it. Grammarly shown me that I use a lot of"},{"startTime":551.4,"endTime":554.96,"body":"extra words and pauses, which I already knew from looking at the"},{"startTime":554.96,"endTime":558.52,"body":"transcript, but it does really remove the amount of"},{"startTime":558.52,"endTime":562.36,"body":"content that you have. One thing I have learned is it really doesn't like"},{"startTime":562.36,"endTime":566.08,"body":"the word really, which it seems I do because"},{"startTime":566.08,"endTime":569.88,"body":"it comes up a lot in my transcripts. The end result is good, but"},{"startTime":570.0400000000001,"endTime":573.72,"body":"still not good enough. Unless you're looking to create a book"},{"startTime":573.72,"endTime":577.4,"body":"of conversations, where does that leave us? Good question."},{"startTime":577.5600000000001,"endTime":580.6,"body":"I hit a hurdle here. So I tried a few things."},{"startTime":581.24,"endTime":585.08,"body":"One of them was going back to the AI. Now that I have"},{"startTime":585.08,"endTime":588.64,"body":"a better edited transcript, I uploaded the"},{"startTime":588.64,"endTime":592.32,"body":"edited version from Grammarly into ChatGPT and asked it"},{"startTime":592.32,"endTime":595.88,"body":"using this simple prompt, can you proofread the"},{"startTime":595.88,"endTime":599.2900000000001,"body":"content and convert it from spoken word"},{"startTime":599.53,"endTime":603.37,"body":"in brackets transcription to written form in brackets"},{"startTime":603.53,"endTime":607.09,"body":"chapter. Keep the word count as close to the"},{"startTime":607.09,"endTime":610.41,"body":"original as possible. This gave me a 900 word"},{"startTime":610.41,"endTime":613.61,"body":"version of the 1600 words that I put in."},{"startTime":614.65,"endTime":618.49,"body":"So after doing that, I asked it, can you please expand it to 1100 words"},{"startTime":618.49,"endTime":622.25,"body":"without losing context? This gave me"},{"startTime":622.25,"endTime":625.15,"body":"a good article sized chapter."},{"startTime":625.87,"endTime":629.6700000000001,"body":"Now remember, I'm not trying to write a massive amount"},{"startTime":629.6700000000001,"endTime":632.83,"body":"of words, just take my podcast episode"},{"startTime":633.23,"endTime":636.91,"body":"and turn them into chapters in a book. I was able to expand"},{"startTime":636.91,"endTime":640.4300000000001,"body":"out to 1500 words reasonably easily,"},{"startTime":641.23,"endTime":644.7900000000001,"body":"but I had to keep things like the"},{"startTime":644.7900000000001,"endTime":648.47,"body":"idioms of fire, my theme in place and stop it changing"},{"startTime":648.47,"endTime":652.09,"body":"to using storms and boats and all sorts of things like that. It"},{"startTime":652.09,"endTime":655.65,"body":"really the more it expanded, the further it got away from my original points."},{"startTime":655.89,"endTime":659.69,"body":"Overall, once I when I went from 1100 to 1500 words,"},{"startTime":659.69,"endTime":663.2900000000001,"body":"it actually destroyed the content. So 1100 really was the"},{"startTime":663.2900000000001,"endTime":667.09,"body":"limit of where it would take the 900 it had pulled out by proofreading"},{"startTime":667.89,"endTime":671.25,"body":"and make it still good readable content without"},{"startTime":671.8100000000001,"endTime":675.65,"body":"destroying the content. Overall, the output was good, but I'm not sure"},{"startTime":675.65,"endTime":679.2900000000001,"body":"it still really sounds like my voice when I sit down and"},{"startTime":679.2900000000001,"endTime":682.84,"body":"read it properly. At a first glance, it passed the muster."},{"startTime":683.48,"endTime":686.64,"body":"I'll make a decision about whether to use this in a book or not once"},{"startTime":686.64,"endTime":690.36,"body":"I've spent a little bit more times reviewing and having a look at it."},{"startTime":690.6,"endTime":694.36,"body":"The biggest issue I see is getting similar quality output each time."},{"startTime":694.76,"endTime":698.28,"body":"Even using the same commands gives different text"},{"startTime":698.36,"endTime":701.64,"body":"output. And this is really frustrating, especially when"},{"startTime":701.88,"endTime":705.6800000000001,"body":"you're using different transcripts to give"},{"startTime":705.6800000000001,"endTime":708.9200000000001,"body":"to ChatGPT to produce the better quality content."},{"startTime":709.49,"endTime":713.1700000000001,"body":"Because it seems each time you open a new window it can completely"},{"startTime":713.1700000000001,"endTime":717.01,"body":"change its output. So there's no reliability there. And that's"},{"startTime":717.01,"endTime":720.73,"body":"really frustrating. So step three, we've, you know, made our transcript, we've"},{"startTime":720.73,"endTime":724.49,"body":"gone through our proofreading process. Step three really is the"},{"startTime":724.49,"endTime":728.1700000000001,"body":"human touch and that's editing and styling. Now I"},{"startTime":728.1700000000001,"endTime":731.97,"body":"wish I could get out of this pit. It is time consuming and boring"},{"startTime":731.97,"endTime":735.61,"body":"to me. It's so hard. I was hoping that I could do this and"},{"startTime":735.61,"endTime":739.36,"body":"that's why I started on this journey, but I'm really not sure it's"},{"startTime":739.36,"endTime":742.84,"body":"there yet. So like any project, you need to run your eyes over the"},{"startTime":742.84,"endTime":746.64,"body":"resulting content. I read it out loud. It's the only way"},{"startTime":746.64,"endTime":750.48,"body":"to hear what it actually sounds like. And this is something that I used"},{"startTime":750.48,"endTime":753.999,"body":"to teach my year 4s to do when I was primary school teacher"},{"startTime":754.32,"endTime":757.84,"body":"because often reading it inside their head is completely different"},{"startTime":758.4,"endTime":761.96,"body":"to when you hear it out loud. Funnily enough, I think we just"},{"startTime":761.96,"endTime":765.52,"body":"read something differently when we read it out loud"},{"startTime":766.03,"endTime":769.59,"body":"because we tend to skip over words when we're reading inside our head. I suggest"},{"startTime":769.59,"endTime":772.75,"body":"you get someone else to read it to and suggest changes."},{"startTime":773.23,"endTime":776.87,"body":"Maybe find someone who's your potential audience or someone you can"},{"startTime":776.87,"endTime":780.51,"body":"trust. Once I started down this road from the Grammarly output, I rewrote"},{"startTime":780.51,"endTime":783.7900000000001,"body":"huge chunks of my work. Why? Because as I mentioned earlier,"},{"startTime":784.11,"endTime":787.51,"body":"Grammarly doesn't seem to really get context. So if I just took my"},{"startTime":787.51,"endTime":791.07,"body":"Grammarly output and brought it straight inside in human editing,"},{"startTime":791.41,"endTime":794.97,"body":"I was back at that. Automatically having to edit again. It wasn't as"},{"startTime":794.97,"endTime":798.21,"body":"necessary if I put it into ChatGPT after Grammarly, but"},{"startTime":798.77,"endTime":802.61,"body":"it really wasn't there. The restructuring when you're doing it manually really"},{"startTime":802.69,"endTime":805.41,"body":"often takes you back to the beginning the raw transcript."},{"startTime":806.21,"endTime":809.85,"body":"Maybe I could have done better in the original podcast in planning, but I can"},{"startTime":809.85,"endTime":813.57,"body":"only structure it so much. You aren't going to get away with this"},{"startTime":813.65,"endTime":817.1700000000001,"body":"just relying on a you will need a human in the end"},{"startTime":817.25,"endTime":821.0500000000001,"body":"to take the that audio content and ensure you get"},{"startTime":821.0500000000001,"endTime":824.33,"body":"the quality you need. So what are my overall thoughts based on my experience"},{"startTime":824.49,"endTime":828.09,"body":"converting a podcast video to a book article?"},{"startTime":828.8100000000001,"endTime":832.57,"body":"The first thing is plan your audio with the book in mind. Build in"},{"startTime":832.89,"endTime":836.53,"body":"good strong structure. It will save you a lot of time"},{"startTime":836.53,"endTime":840.2900000000001,"body":"later. Secondly, AI transcription can be very good"},{"startTime":840.2900000000001,"endTime":843.2900000000001,"body":"if you have the right tool and it recognizes your dialect."},{"startTime":844.1800000000001,"endTime":847.62,"body":"Number three, the spoken word is nothing like the written"},{"startTime":847.62,"endTime":851.26,"body":"word. That's a hard lesson to learn. Number four,"},{"startTime":851.26,"endTime":854.94,"body":"getting AI to proofread is better done after using a"},{"startTime":854.94,"endTime":858.78,"body":"tool like Grammarly.
