It is kind of a solitary"},{"startTime":56.04,"endTime":59.56,"body":"life in a lot of cases because you're spending a lot of time alone on"},{"startTime":59.56,"endTime":63.0,"body":"the road, you run into different people, but essentially you're turning up at"},{"startTime":63.0,"endTime":66.75999999999999,"body":"places and you're the speaker. So you're kind of separated"},{"startTime":66.75999999999999,"endTime":70.56,"body":"from the regulars that are there or you're catching planes or taxis"},{"startTime":70.56,"endTime":74.28,"body":"or Ubers or whatever. But you're often on your own as you move around."},{"startTime":74.91999999999999,"endTime":78.39999999999999,"body":"And it really can be hard. Many speakers work in"},{"startTime":78.39999999999999,"endTime":81.88,"body":"isolation, especially when they're starting out. And that"},{"startTime":81.88,"endTime":85.36,"body":"creates blind spots, missed chances, and an unnecessary"},{"startTime":85.36,"endTime":89.0,"body":"struggle when you travel. Being"},{"startTime":89.0,"endTime":92.24,"body":"alone is probably one of the hardest things. And this is where I find a"},{"startTime":92.24,"endTime":96.07,"body":"lot of speakers really suffer. It's great to be with"},{"startTime":96.07,"endTime":99.47,"body":"your family, but having to leave them and then go away"},{"startTime":99.78999999999999,"endTime":103.58999999999999,"body":"and come back, it disrupts your whole life. Then there's"},{"startTime":103.58999999999999,"endTime":106.83,"body":"the time in hotel rooms. And if you're like me, I actually find it hard"},{"startTime":106.83,"endTime":110.42999999999999,"body":"to work when I'm in hotel rooms. I can't focus. It's like my"},{"startTime":110.42999999999999,"endTime":113.83,"body":"mind turns off and I'm on holiday mode the minute I turn up in a"},{"startTime":113.83,"endTime":117.58999999999999,"body":"hotel. So, you know, you've got to then look at, okay, well,"},{"startTime":117.58999999999999,"endTime":120.14999999999999,"body":"if I'm not going to get any work done here, well, I've got to get"},{"startTime":120.14999999999999,"endTime":123.75,"body":"work done when I get home. So it puts more pressure on getting home"},{"startTime":124.30999999999999,"endTime":128.07,"body":"and getting things done. So there's so much more involved to travel than"},{"startTime":128.07,"endTime":131.79,"body":"what most people think. You think, you know, you rock up to the airport, you"},{"startTime":131.79,"endTime":135.51,"body":"jump on a plane, it's all glorious. You're in business class."},{"startTime":135.51,"endTime":139.35,"body":"Well, you know, I reckon 90% of speakers go economy class. Heck,"},{"startTime":139.35,"endTime":143.10999999999999,"body":"I do. And I'm six foot four. And so for me it's quite a tight"},{"startTime":143.10999999999999,"endTime":146.39,"body":"fit. Now I found the airlines that I actually do fit in, so I generally"},{"startTime":146.39,"endTime":150.2,"body":"fly Virgin within Australia. Course and you know, you get to"},{"startTime":150.2,"endTime":153.84,"body":"know the best seats to sit in, for example, when you're booking your seat."},{"startTime":154.16,"endTime":157.92,"body":"But traveling alone is boring. I'm"},{"startTime":158.0,"endTime":161.32,"body":"lucky in some ways. I'm an only child, so I'm used to being on my"},{"startTime":161.32,"endTime":164.72,"body":"own. I don't mind my own company. But for other people can be"},{"startTime":164.72,"endTime":168.51999999999998,"body":"extremely difficult. It doesn't have to be lonely. One"},{"startTime":168.51999999999998,"endTime":171.72,"body":"of the great things about being to be a speaker is people get to know"},{"startTime":171.72,"endTime":174.51999999999998,"body":"you and you get to know other speakers. So there's always that chance. You can"},{"startTime":174.51999999999998,"endTime":178.07999999999998,"body":"run into a friend at the airport, which I often do, and you have a"},{"startTime":178.07999999999998,"endTime":181.12,"body":"chance to have a cup of coffee and catch up and have a chat"},{"startTime":181.6,"endTime":185.2,"body":"often. Also, you're at home alone, you work online only,"},{"startTime":185.2,"endTime":189.0,"body":"or you work in a home office. You're sitting there by yourself. You're in"},{"startTime":189.0,"endTime":192.79999999999998,"body":"your office, you've got all your little tools and tricks"},{"startTime":192.79999999999998,"endTime":196.56,"body":"and things and all the bits beside you that remind you"},{"startTime":196.56,"endTime":199.51999999999998,"body":"of the different things in your life that you like to collect."},{"startTime":200.16,"endTime":203.93,"body":"But realistically, you know, you're here alone and"},{"startTime":203.93,"endTime":207.73,"body":"it's your world, and if you're speaking online, it's the same thing. You're"},{"startTime":207.73,"endTime":211.57,"body":"here, they're there, and you know, you're"},{"startTime":211.57,"endTime":215.29,"body":"isolated again, you can't feel the crowd, you can't do all those things."},{"startTime":215.29,"endTime":219.01,"body":"So it can be very, very lonely. And"},{"startTime":219.01,"endTime":222.13,"body":"I think there's lots of things we can do to help that. One more thing"},{"startTime":222.13,"endTime":225.89,"body":"I'd like to mention, sorry about being alone, is that"},{"startTime":225.89,"endTime":229.59,"body":"we often work with global teams, which means that if we do have"},{"startTime":229.59,"endTime":233.31,"body":"staff, they're generally not in our offices. They could be all around the"},{"startTime":233.31,"endTime":236.75,"body":"world. So again, while you have a team of people around you,"},{"startTime":236.75,"endTime":240.47,"body":"unlike a regular business where the staff are right there in the"},{"startTime":240.47,"endTime":244.07,"body":"room, you often won't have that because"},{"startTime":244.15,"endTime":247.98999999999998,"body":"that's just not the way most speaking businesses develop. Some bigger speaking"},{"startTime":247.98999999999998,"endTime":251.59,"body":"businesses, definitely, but most people are generally on their own,"},{"startTime":251.59,"endTime":255.37,"body":"in my experience, and talking to them, and then their"},{"startTime":255.37,"endTime":259.05,"body":"staff are outsourced. So you can do a whole"},{"startTime":259.05,"endTime":262.69,"body":"range of things to help improve this. The first is get"},{"startTime":262.69,"endTime":265.89000000000004,"body":"out and join some clubs, go to a gym,"},{"startTime":266.29,"endTime":269.77000000000004,"body":"go networking, whatever. There's a pile of things that you can do to get you"},{"startTime":269.77000000000004,"endTime":272.85,"body":"out into public. Now, if you're like me, you don't mind a bit of public,"},{"startTime":272.85,"endTime":276.21000000000004,"body":"but you don't like a lot. So for me, it's about getting out,"},{"startTime":276.61,"endTime":280.28000000000003,"body":"getting my connection with people, feeling, you know,"},{"startTime":280.28000000000003,"endTime":283.56,"body":"that live feeling in the room. And sometimes it's from the speaking,"},{"startTime":283.96000000000004,"endTime":287.52000000000004,"body":"sometimes it's just from general business stuff or as I said, like,"},{"startTime":287.52000000000004,"endTime":290.72,"body":"I'm a volunteer firefighter, so I go down the fire station, I catch up with"},{"startTime":290.72,"endTime":294.44,"body":"people there, and that helps break that loneliness down."},{"startTime":295.64000000000004,"endTime":299.44,"body":"It's something that anyone can do. And of course, you know, I have no doubt"},{"startTime":299.44,"endTime":302.8,"body":"that you have things that you do, but don't let yourself get too isolated. I"},{"startTime":302.8,"endTime":306.57000000000005,"body":"know during COVID we all got very isolated and I think there's a"},{"startTime":306.57000000000005,"endTime":309.81,"body":"real drag on of that effect I still feel"},{"startTime":310.21000000000004,"endTime":314.05,"body":"talking to people and looking at people. There's been a very"},{"startTime":314.13,"endTime":317.53000000000003,"body":"long lasting effect of that isolation. I think people are still"},{"startTime":317.53000000000003,"endTime":320.77000000000004,"body":"isolated. It's like we never got back together and"},{"startTime":321.09000000000003,"endTime":324.81,"body":"connected again. So please don't sit there"},{"startTime":324.81,"endTime":328.61,"body":"and suffer in silence. Speaking is part of your life. It's not"},{"startTime":328.61,"endTime":331.85,"body":"all of your life. If it's all of your life, you need to really look"},{"startTime":331.85,"endTime":335.3,"body":"at your life because a life is made up of different parts. You know, you've"},{"startTime":335.3,"endTime":339.14000000000004,"body":"got relationships, you've got spirituality. If you're into those"},{"startTime":339.14000000000004,"endTime":342.62,"body":"sorts of things, you've got volunteering, you've got"},{"startTime":342.62,"endTime":346.42,"body":"sport and fitness and health. There's so many parts that"},{"startTime":346.42,"endTime":350.14000000000004,"body":"make up a life. So if you are completely focused on your"},{"startTime":350.14000000000004,"endTime":353.54,"body":"speaking business, yeah, I understand you're growing your business, but"},{"startTime":353.86,"endTime":357.3,"body":"don't let it become everything, because if it becomes everything,"},{"startTime":358.1,"endTime":361.86,"body":"you'll lose other things. And some of those other things you can't afford to lose"},{"startTime":361.86,"endTime":365.23,"body":"because, well, it affects your mental health and it will"},{"startTime":365.31,"endTime":368.67,"body":"eventually crash down on your business as well."},{"startTime":369.71000000000004,"endTime":373.19,"body":"One of the things that I did very early on to help deal with loneliness"},{"startTime":373.19,"endTime":376.75,"body":"was to join a speaking organization. So whether it's psa,"},{"startTime":376.83000000000004,"endTime":380.43,"body":"nsa, Virtual Speakers Association"},{"startTime":380.43,"endTime":384.23,"body":"International, or another local group, these organizations give"},{"startTime":384.23,"endTime":387.71000000000004,"body":"you access to events and mentors and speaking directories"},{"startTime":388.20000000000005,"endTime":392.04,"body":"that can drive real growth in your business. They give you a place to go"},{"startTime":392.04,"endTime":395.64000000000004,"body":"where you can hang out with people that are like you. And for me, this"},{"startTime":395.64000000000004,"endTime":399.08000000000004,"body":"became really, really important. I joined Professional"},{"startTime":399.08000000000004,"endTime":402.52000000000004,"body":"speakers Australia in 2009 and I've been a member ever since."},{"startTime":403.08000000000004,"endTime":406.92,"body":"And I love it. There's times when I don't necessarily"},{"startTime":406.92,"endTime":410.52000000000004,"body":"agree with where the organization's going, but to me, this is about the"},{"startTime":410.52000000000004,"endTime":414.22,"body":"people in the organization. And so I like"},{"startTime":414.22,"endTime":417.82000000000005,"body":"to spend time with those people. And they've become my friends. And one of the"},{"startTime":417.82000000000005,"endTime":420.86,"body":"reasons for that is they are going on the same sort of journey as I'm"},{"startTime":420.86,"endTime":424.62,"body":"going. They understand what it's like to be stuck in an airport by"},{"startTime":424.62,"endTime":428.22,"body":"yourself. They understand what it means to be sitting in a hotel room by"},{"startTime":428.22,"endTime":431.70000000000005,"body":"yourself and getting on stage and being in front of large"},{"startTime":431.70000000000005,"endTime":435.18,"body":"crowds of people and Funnily enough, as I've said in previous"},{"startTime":435.18,"endTime":438.70000000000005,"body":"episodes, most speakers seem to be introverts. So it's a very"},{"startTime":438.94,"endTime":442.52000000000004,"body":"weird sort of world. But I've made some of my best"},{"startTime":442.52000000000004,"endTime":445.92,"body":"mates in these speaking organizations and they are across the globe."},{"startTime":446.0,"endTime":449.84000000000003,"body":"So while I see certain people here in Australia, I"},{"startTime":449.84000000000003,"endTime":453.28000000000003,"body":"also see people in Singapore I consider to be friends. I see people"},{"startTime":453.52000000000004,"endTime":456.96000000000004,"body":"in New Zealand, throughout Asia, into America,"},{"startTime":457.20000000000005,"endTime":460.88,"body":"Canada, Germany, all sorts of places in Europe."},{"startTime":461.6,"endTime":465.20000000000005,"body":"And they're my friends, too. They're my friends in that moment."},{"startTime":465.52000000000004,"endTime":469.24,"body":"And we connect online from time to time. You know, you wouldn't say they"},{"startTime":469.24,"endTime":473.08000000000004,"body":"necessarily your best friends, but the funny thing is being a speaker,"},{"startTime":473.08000000000004,"endTime":476.44,"body":"once you make a connection with someone, when you run into them again, it's that,"},{"startTime":476.44,"endTime":480.16,"body":"you know, old friends sort of connection thing where it's like, oh, how you been?"},{"startTime":480.16,"endTime":483.48,"body":"What have you been doing? And it's really nice to catch up with them and"},{"startTime":483.48,"endTime":486.92,"body":"hear about their families and their travels and their business and what they're doing. And"},{"startTime":486.92,"endTime":489.8,"body":"you might not see them again for a couple more years, but it's like no"},{"startTime":489.8,"endTime":493.56,"body":"times past. So that's been such an important part of my speaking"},{"startTime":493.56,"endTime":496.94,"body":"journey. The other side to it is that they're there to answer"},{"startTime":496.94,"endTime":500.70000000000005,"body":"questions. Most speakers help other speakers. There is no direct"},{"startTime":500.86,"endTime":504.66,"body":"competition in speaking. Yes, there are some people who get"},{"startTime":504.66,"endTime":508.38,"body":"more gigs than other people, and that's just the nature of any business."},{"startTime":508.46000000000004,"endTime":511.82000000000005,"body":"Some people are better or they get better known, or they're better connected,"},{"startTime":512.22,"endTime":515.9399999999999,"body":"whatever it is, they might be more famous. It doesn't"},{"startTime":515.9399999999999,"endTime":519.7,"body":"matter. In the end, 99% of the speakers that I've come"},{"startTime":519.7,"endTime":523.46,"body":"across are just like one me and you can"},{"startTime":523.46,"endTime":526.46,"body":"relate to each other and you have a great time together. And when they turn"},{"startTime":526.46,"endTime":530.1800000000001,"body":"off the stage personality, they're really wonderful people"},{"startTime":530.1800000000001,"endTime":533.78,"body":"and all they want to do is help. And that's exactly what I do. That's"},{"startTime":533.78,"endTime":536.58,"body":"why I do this podcast, is I want to help people. I want to help"},{"startTime":536.58,"endTime":539.74,"body":"other speakers. I want to be the best speaker in the world, that's for sure."},{"startTime":540.22,"endTime":543.98,"body":"But I know that I've got something to give within my area of expertise"},{"startTime":543.98,"endTime":547.83,"body":"and they have stuff to give in their area of expertise and we help each"},{"startTime":547.83,"endTime":551.51,"body":"other out. So there's that sharing aspect that's such a"},{"startTime":551.51,"endTime":555.07,"body":"big part of it. Now. I spend a lot of my time answering people's questions"},{"startTime":555.07,"endTime":558.91,"body":"about digital marketing because using AI and digital marketing is"},{"startTime":558.91,"endTime":562.6700000000001,"body":"my area. That's what I know best out of everything. Yeah,"},{"startTime":562.6700000000001,"endTime":566.15,"body":"I know a lot about firefighting and leadership, too. Absolutely. But"},{"startTime":566.5500000000001,"endTime":570.11,"body":"I've been digital marketing since 1996. So I'm more than"},{"startTime":570.11,"endTime":573.03,"body":"happy to spend an hour talking to someone about building"},{"startTime":573.59,"endTime":577.3100000000001,"body":"funnels and building products and things like that, because that's"},{"startTime":577.3100000000001,"endTime":580.87,"body":"what I do. I help speakers build products,"},{"startTime":581.19,"endTime":585.03,"body":"build extra income streams, and I help other people do it as well."},{"startTime":585.51,"endTime":589.35,"body":"So for me, that's a great, fun thing to do, and it's a"},{"startTime":589.35,"endTime":592.91,"body":"way of giving back and building those organizations and"},{"startTime":592.91,"endTime":596.6700000000001,"body":"those friendships. So the last thing I'd say about that"},{"startTime":596.6700000000001,"endTime":600.51,"body":"is that being in a speaking organization gives you"},{"startTime":600.51,"endTime":604.27,"body":"a feeling of belonging. It's somewhere that you're like all the other"},{"startTime":604.27,"endTime":607.91,"body":"people. Even though you're doing your own individual things, you"},{"startTime":607.91,"endTime":611.59,"body":"share a common bond. I'll often hear the term tribe used."},{"startTime":611.6700000000001,"endTime":615.39,"body":"I'm not really one of those people that loves that word, but look, it"},{"startTime":615.39,"endTime":618.99,"body":"describes it. They're our tribe, they're our people. And so"},{"startTime":618.99,"endTime":622.07,"body":"I highly recommend you join a speaking organization."},{"startTime":622.95,"endTime":626.49,"body":"Another thing you do is find or build a mastermind group. I've talked about this"},{"startTime":626.49,"endTime":630.21,"body":"previously, but mastermind groups are really, really good. They give you specific."},{"startTime":630.21,"endTime":634.0500000000001,"body":"Helps you get opinions from other real people rather"},{"startTime":634.0500000000001,"endTime":637.73,"body":"than just talking to an AI like I often do. You can help others too,"},{"startTime":637.73,"endTime":641.489,"body":"by giving your 2 cents worth to help them grow. And it"},{"startTime":641.489,"endTime":645.33,"body":"gives you regular accountability in your business. So you get together with"},{"startTime":645.33,"endTime":649.13,"body":"people regularly, you share your growth, and you get"},{"startTime":649.13,"endTime":652.5,"body":"to be accountable. So you've got someone to step up to. Because often, you know,"},{"startTime":652.5,"endTime":656.3000000000001,"body":"because we're on our own, we're not accountable to anyone. And quite frankly, I can't"},{"startTime":656.3000000000001,"endTime":660.0600000000001,"body":"even be accountable to myself. So having an external force there really"},{"startTime":660.0600000000001,"endTime":663.82,"body":"helps me move forward. Because otherwise you kind of"},{"startTime":663.82,"endTime":667.66,"body":"get in this loop of just doing stuff and you really don't know whether"},{"startTime":667.66,"endTime":671.26,"body":"you're really moving forward. Whereas if you can take a project to them,"},{"startTime":671.4200000000001,"endTime":675.0600000000001,"body":"get some feedback, and then come back and report on the growth or whatever's"},{"startTime":675.0600000000001,"endTime":678.66,"body":"happened that month, that can be a really important step for every speaker."},{"startTime":678.66,"endTime":682.22,"body":"And again, you're not alone. You feel like you"},{"startTime":682.22,"endTime":686.0600000000001,"body":"belong to that group. So you start to get these little subgroups that"},{"startTime":686.0600000000001,"endTime":689.86,"body":"are even tighter than, say, a bigger speaking organization, but they don't"},{"startTime":689.86,"endTime":693.0600000000001,"body":"necessarily need to be speaking again. It could be local business"},{"startTime":693.0600000000001,"endTime":696.86,"body":"mastermind groups, and you're taking your expertise in your business area to"},{"startTime":696.86,"endTime":700.58,"body":"that rather than as a speaker. Another thing is to learn to"},{"startTime":700.58,"endTime":704.4200000000001,"body":"collaborate and don't compete. You're not fighting for scraps."},{"startTime":704.4200000000001,"endTime":707.86,"body":"There's power in collaboration, joint events, cross promotions,"},{"startTime":707.86,"endTime":711.7,"body":"podcasts, guest spots, and referral networks. Not many speakers go back to the"},{"startTime":711.7,"endTime":714.98,"body":"same gig year after year, and you would have heard me say this before. So"},{"startTime":714.98,"endTime":718.78,"body":"there's never that sort of thing that, you know, once you've got the job with"},{"startTime":718.78,"endTime":722.14,"body":"that organization, they're going to book you every year. They've heard you speak, they're probably"},{"startTime":722.14,"endTime":725.22,"body":"going to get someone else in the next year, or if you do it twice"},{"startTime":725.22,"endTime":728.9,"body":"the third year. So there's an opportunity for you to share, you know,"},{"startTime":728.9,"endTime":732.26,"body":"people, you know, that might be really good fit for that organization or"},{"startTime":732.5,"endTime":735.46,"body":"for, you know, someone else who's already there to share you."},{"startTime":736.02,"endTime":739.86,"body":"So remember, you're not always competing with other people just because"},{"startTime":739.94,"endTime":743.6800000000001,"body":"you're a speaker. You are so different, and that"},{"startTime":743.76,"endTime":747.32,"body":"really opens up the opportunities. For example, I do the Experts Journey"},{"startTime":747.32,"endTime":751.16,"body":"podcast with Dixie Carlton, and we have"},{"startTime":751.16,"endTime":754.88,"body":"that podcast and that's all about, you know, growing your business using"},{"startTime":754.88,"endTime":758.6,"body":"books and speaking and all these different topics. So helping Experts"},{"startTime":758.6,"endTime":762.32,"body":"grow, that's something I do as a joint venture. I do"},{"startTime":762.48,"endTime":765.9200000000001,"body":"multiple things like that. And it's a lot of fun and it's a great"},{"startTime":765.9200000000001,"endTime":769.41,"body":"opportunity just to keep connect with other people, but also"},{"startTime":769.49,"endTime":773.25,"body":"create new content. You can also"},{"startTime":773.25,"endTime":777.09,"body":"build events together. You know, podcast is a type of"},{"startTime":777.09,"endTime":780.77,"body":"event, I think, realistically. But, you know, doing small workshops where you get two or"},{"startTime":780.77,"endTime":784.57,"body":"three speakers together, you know, across a joint topic, you promote it"},{"startTime":784.57,"endTime":788.41,"body":"to the people you know, and you get up and take your turn, you"},{"startTime":788.41,"endTime":791.57,"body":"get half an hour each or whatever it is, that can be a lot of"},{"startTime":791.57,"endTime":794.9300000000001,"body":"fun and it can actually be a profitable business if you want it to be."},{"startTime":795.34,"endTime":798.7,"body":"That said, you know, events obviously are much smaller these days than they used to"},{"startTime":798.7,"endTime":801.82,"body":"be, but I really enjoy doing those joint venture"},{"startTime":801.98,"endTime":805.74,"body":"events that we put on ourselves. It's really good fun to get up"},{"startTime":805.74,"endTime":809.58,"body":"in front of a group of people to be with your friends and to present"},{"startTime":809.58,"endTime":812.86,"body":"across a topic and, you know, help people grow their businesses."},{"startTime":813.26,"endTime":816.94,"body":"And honestly, it's more fun when you're a member of a team speaking"},{"startTime":816.94,"endTime":820.46,"body":"on your own. Yep, you're out there, you know, you're the person."},{"startTime":820.7,"endTime":824.07,"body":"You know, everybody's, oh, you're the speaker. You're, you know, thank you. That was very"},{"startTime":824.07,"endTime":827.91,"body":"interesting.
