about"},{"startTime":278.68,"endTime":282.6,"body":"those people and they send you emails"},{"startTime":280.6,"endTime":284.4,"body":"asking questions about statistics I try"},{"startTime":282.6,"endTime":286.32,"body":"to do what I can but you can imagine"},{"startTime":284.4,"endTime":289.32,"body":"that this it can be quite overwhelming"},{"startTime":286.32,"endTime":291.479,"body":"at occasions and um it's not easy for me"},{"startTime":289.32,"endTime":293.199,"body":"to always catch up with all the issues"},{"startTime":291.479,"endTime":295.16,"body":"coming in but there would be definitely"},{"startTime":293.199,"endTime":298.199,"body":"more need for statisticians in other"},{"startTime":295.16,"endTime":301.199,"body":"places so um it's good that they have"},{"startTime":298.199,"endTime":303.72,"body":"one light and and um actually we're even"},{"startTime":301.199,"endTime":306.68,"body":"searching for a second now because"},{"startTime":303.72,"endTime":308.24,"body":"that's so much work to be done um but"},{"startTime":306.68,"endTime":309.96,"body":"there will be would be definitely more"},{"startTime":308.24,"endTime":311.759,"body":"places not only in patology but more"},{"startTime":362.12,"endTime":367.24,"body":"large scale ecological studies some of"},{"startTime":365.039,"endTime":371.039,"body":"which really cover the entire great"},{"startTime":367.24,"endTime":373.44,"body":"brange in Africa and um they are say"},{"startTime":371.039,"endTime":375.72,"body":"pretty computation intensive in the"},{"startTime":373.44,"endTime":378.8,"body":"first place so it just needs a huge"},{"startTime":375.72,"endTime":381.36,"body":"amount of programming and computers may"},{"startTime":378.8,"endTime":384.28,"body":"be running for more than a month to get"},{"startTime":381.36,"endTime":386.12,"body":"the analysis completed stuff like that"},{"startTime":384.28,"endTime":388.0,"body":"and also from the perspective of data"},{"startTime":386.12,"endTime":390.8,"body":"processing they might be fairly complex"},{"startTime":388.0,"endTime":393.84,"body":"because it's a whole lot of Fairly"},{"startTime":390.8,"endTime":395.88,"body":"different data so maps for instance"},{"startTime":393.84,"endTime":397.919,"body":"showing certain ecological gradients"},{"startTime":395.88,"endTime":401.96,"body":"over entire Africa some of them having a"},{"startTime":397.919,"endTime":403.8,"body":"resolution of 200 by 200 M so it's also"},{"startTime":401.96,"endTime":406.759,"body":"large amounts of data to be processed"},{"startTime":403.8,"endTime":408.84,"body":"but also data about abundance or"},{"startTime":406.759,"endTime":412.919,"body":"presence of Apes in certain things"},{"startTime":415.12,"endTime":420.24,"body":"like gross domestic product and"},{"startTime":417.28,"endTime":424.319,"body":"Corruption indices so they complex"},{"startTime":420.24,"endTime":427.039,"body":"analysis and I like them a lot so um"},{"startTime":424.319,"endTime":429.28,"body":"complex models to understand pretty"},{"startTime":427.039,"endTime":431.96,"body":"complex questions and they they need"},{"startTime":429.28,"endTime":433.68,"body":"more input from my side because uh the"},{"startTime":431.96,"endTime":437.0,"body":"students at least initially they are"},{"startTime":433.68,"endTime":438.879,"body":"quite overwhelmed by the by the amount"},{"startTime":437.0,"endTime":440.8,"body":"and also the complication of the tasks"},{"startTime":438.879,"endTime":443.56,"body":"to be done so merging all these very"},{"startTime":440.8,"endTime":446.36,"body":"different kinds of data geographical"},{"startTime":443.56,"endTime":447.879,"body":"economical data ecological data so that"},{"startTime":446.36,"endTime":449.36,"body":"takes some time and effort but I like"},{"startTime":447.879,"endTime":451.16,"body":"these studies a lot and they challenge"},{"startTime":449.36,"endTime":453.68,"body":"me me to some extent they made me"},{"startTime":451.16,"endTime":454.879,"body":"thinking about the Ecology of great apes"},{"startTime":453.68,"endTime":456.759,"body":"and what can be done about their"},{"startTime":454.879,"endTime":459.319,"body":"protection so I think it's also very"},{"startTime":456.759,"endTime":462.199,"body":"relevant so these studies are not just"},{"startTime":459.319,"endTime":464.84,"body":"um say you do something and eventually"},{"startTime":462.199,"endTime":466.8,"body":"you get some significant effects or nice"},{"startTime":464.84,"endTime":469.44,"body":"models but they really might matter also"},{"startTime":466.8,"endTime":471.72,"body":"for future decisions which um might be"},{"startTime":469.44,"endTime":476.4,"body":"made about how to protect wayes which is"},{"startTime":471.72,"endTime":477.8,"body":"a very big issue so what person so it"},{"startTime":476.4,"endTime":479.84,"body":"seems like there's a few aims from these"},{"startTime":477.8,"endTime":482.12,"body":"studies there's a conservation aim and"},{"startTime":479.84,"endTime":484.12,"body":"then there's also kind of scientific aim"},{"startTime":482.12,"endTime":487.36,"body":"figuring out distributions of Apes"},{"startTime":484.12,"endTime":489.319,"body":"across Africa so what's what's kind of"},{"startTime":487.36,"endTime":491.759,"body":"the main priority for that for that"},{"startTime":489.319,"endTime":494.159,"body":"study um first of all it's a whole bunch"},{"startTime":491.759,"endTime":497.72,"body":"of studies so it's not a single study"},{"startTime":494.159,"endTime":501.24,"body":"but um I went when when I came here I"},{"startTime":497.72,"endTime":504.24,"body":"considered for a moment to give out talk"},{"startTime":501.24,"endTime":506.159,"body":"what I'm doing personally and that would"},{"startTime":504.24,"endTime":508.0,"body":"have been I know didn't give it because"},{"startTime":506.159,"endTime":509.72,"body":"I didn't find the time to repair but excited"},{"startTime":525.88,"endTime":530.68,"body":"about birds but I I realized when I when"},{"startTime":529.08,"endTime":532.64,"body":"I thought about what could I talk about"},{"startTime":530.68,"endTime":534.839,"body":"that actually I'm much more involved in"},{"startTime":532.64,"endTime":537.6,"body":"primates primatology by Apes than I in"},{"startTime":534.839,"endTime":540.2,"body":"birs now MH and"},{"startTime":537.6,"endTime":542.56,"body":"um so then I thought about what could be"},{"startTime":540.2,"endTime":545.36,"body":"the different projects I was involved in"},{"startTime":542.56,"endTime":547.6,"body":"or am currently involved in um I could"},{"startTime":545.36,"endTime":549.88,"body":"say a few words about that and they"},{"startTime":547.6,"endTime":552.04,"body":"covered a whole bunch of problems so"},{"startTime":549.88,"endTime":555.079,"body":"some of them deal with uh habitat"},{"startTime":552.04,"endTime":559.279,"body":"changes in Africa over the enti great"},{"startTime":555.079,"endTime":561.24,"body":"range and um how that might impact the"},{"startTime":559.279,"endTime":563.92,"body":"suitability of the habitat for great"},{"startTime":561.24,"endTime":567.64,"body":"apes and the change of that seem to be"},{"startTime":563.92,"endTime":570.2,"body":"quite dramatic MH in the past decad"},{"startTime":567.64,"endTime":571.92,"body":"decades um so that's more like a general"},{"startTime":570.2,"endTime":574.24,"body":"question about what's going on in Africa"},{"startTime":571.92,"endTime":577.76,"body":"so I mean we don't really know too much"},{"startTime":574.24,"endTime":579.16,"body":"about um habitat suitability for great"},{"startTime":577.76,"endTime":581.2,"body":"apes over the entire range there's a"},{"startTime":579.16,"endTime":583.64,"body":"whole bunch of studies for certain areas"},{"startTime":581.2,"endTime":585.519,"body":"but it has never been combined on a"},{"startTime":583.64,"endTime":588.079,"body":"larger scale that's interesting but"},{"startTime":585.519,"endTime":590.76,"body":"other studies also deal with say"},{"startTime":588.079,"endTime":594.16,"body":"Countrywide models where we look at for"},{"startTime":590.76,"endTime":596.36,"body":"instance um human impact and it's not"},{"startTime":594.16,"endTime":598.6,"body":"always such that areas where there are"},{"startTime":596.36,"endTime":601.2,"body":"more human activities are those which"},{"startTime":598.6,"endTime":602.839,"body":"are verse for great apes so it seems"},{"startTime":601.2,"endTime":605.079,"body":"that there are places where great apes"},{"startTime":602.839,"endTime":607.0,"body":"and humans can get along quite well with"},{"startTime":605.079,"endTime":608.76,"body":"one another so that's another"},{"startTime":607.0,"endTime":610.8,"body":"perspective but we also look at for"},{"startTime":608.76,"endTime":613.64,"body":"instance infectious diseases and their"},{"startTime":610.8,"endTime":615.519,"body":"impact on AE abundance protection"},{"startTime":613.64,"endTime":618.32,"body":"measures we had one recent study which"},{"startTime":615.519,"endTime":622.24,"body":"is published already which shows that if"},{"startTime":618.32,"endTime":624.279,"body":"you have protected areas if you don't do"},{"startTime":622.24,"endTime":626.279,"body":"any measures like putting guards in"},{"startTime":624.279,"endTime":627.92,"body":"there or having activities of NGS you"},{"startTime":626.279,"endTime":631.839,"body":"have a high risk of great apes to get"},{"startTime":627.92,"endTime":634.24,"body":"extinct within the protected areas so"},{"startTime":631.839,"endTime":636.0,"body":"these are studies I'm involved in and I"},{"startTime":634.24,"endTime":638.44,"body":"for me it would be hard to classify them"},{"startTime":636.0,"endTime":640.2,"body":"into say more applied or more"},{"startTime":638.44,"endTime":643.44,"body":"fundamental research most of them they"},{"startTime":640.2,"endTime":645.639,"body":"have some faet related to both aspects I"},{"startTime":643.44,"endTime":649.839,"body":"would say okay that's interesting yeah"},{"startTime":645.639,"endTime":652.76,"body":"our own field site um in Guinea Basu"},{"startTime":649.839,"endTime":657.48,"body":"West Africa um we have there's this"},{"startTime":652.76,"endTime":659.56,"body":"problem of isolated Forest so there's a"},{"startTime":657.48,"endTime":662.24,"body":"group of chimps 14 chimps and they live"},{"startTime":659.56,"endTime":663.959,"body":"in this very small pocket of forest"},{"startTime":662.24,"endTime":666.079,"body":"that's surrounded by Savannah and"},{"startTime":663.959,"endTime":669.92,"body":"they're just kind of stuck there they"},{"startTime":666.079,"endTime":671.519,"body":"can't get to the nearest Big Forest"},{"startTime":669.92,"endTime":674.48,"body":"because they're worried about Crossing"},{"startTime":671.519,"endTime":676.92,"body":"to Savannah The Chimps don't do that so"},{"startTime":674.48,"endTime":679.24,"body":"I think that might be a problem around a"},{"startTime":676.92,"endTime":681.079,"body":"lot of West Africa is these isolated"},{"startTime":679.24,"endTime":684.16,"body":"groups and then they run into
