The Ladder Roofing Mastermind

6. Living in Default

Emily Mo Season 1 Episode 6

The Ladder Roofing Mastermind podcast encourages you to start building leaders in your organization, and oftentimes that starts with empowering ourselves to show up in a stronger way.  A strong leader will attract other leaders and will build new leaders, which will impact the way our business operates and shows up in the World.  Others in the marketplace will take notice and it will change our economy.  How are you going to grow new leaders in your business in the next 3 months?

SPEAKER_00:

Welcome to the Ladder Roofing Mastermind, a podcast that highlights roofing success through systems. I am your host, Emily Mo, and our topic today is living in default. Well, I have good news and I have bad news. The bad news is that you are a victim of your circumstances. We all are. The good news is that 90% of that you are in total control of. In this modern world of software and algorithms, we often accept the default out-of-the-box plug-and-play of so many things. Social media, our smartphones, traffic, grocery stores, holidays, etc. But our business, if left on default mode, will land us in some pretty unappealing situations like low cash flow, high debt, lackluster profits, unhappy teams and customers. Default works for a lot of products that we consume, but we often forget that our business is ours to design in ways that make sense for our market and for ourselves. Often, as technicians turn to CEOs, we rely on the skills that made it possible for us to own a business and gain customers in the first place, which is necessary when you're starting out. But the magic begins happening when we take the reins and focus on the next level of skills required to move past level one. Here at Ladder HQ, we've thought long and hard about the next level of our success and what that may look like for our customers. And we've come to the conclusion that what our clients need most from us is a framework for not only leading ourselves and others, but the blueprints for how to build leaders. So let me give you this scenario. Tell me if it makes sense or sounds familiar. How many times have you given a project to someone? It could be your child, a family member, neighbor, back office employee, a salesperson, it doesn't matter. And they bring you really subpar results that make you want to just say, like, just forget it. And if you want something done right, you just do it yourself. I'm raising my hand here. It has happened more times than I'd care to recount. And it's probably similar for yourself. I finally realized that moment of disappointment or frustration is 100% caused by my lack of leadership on this project or whatever the case may be. It comes down to lazy communication most of the time, but it also needs to go back to building leaders. My failure didn't always occur at the time of delegation where I'm giving this project to someone. There have likely been a hundred previous opportunities to instill leadership qualities into this person that I failed to recognize and act upon. In this age where everyone speaks negatively about the great resignation, being unable to find good help, when work ethic seems to have disappeared in our younger generations, I'm going to challenge you to stop complaining about this. As business owners, it is literally our responsibility to own this quote unquote crisis and start making positive change. This comes down to how we're showing up in the world, how we're communicating with ourselves, and most importantly, how we are communicating with those we don't even know are listening. Our national economy and culture is our responsibility. So what are you doing about it? Here's what we're going to do about it. We're changing our recruiting and hiring strategies to repel those who aren't going to be a good fit and attract like hell those who have a spark of wanting more for themselves and their communities. We're doing this via social media, this podcast, events we are attending, and the way our leadership team moves around the world. Going back to the drawing board on the first 90 days for new hires, what used to be sufficient is no longer. And rather than complaining about it, we're embracing this challenge for what it is: an opportunity to help others grow into the leaders we all need. So we're launching an internal leadership academy course. We're being very intentional with the way we present ourselves to new team members and setting an expectation for how they show up as well. This unsexy work we do with systems for roofing businesses, accounting, the actual project workflow, cash flow management, CRM redesign, etc. None of it works unless everyone is on board and understands the value. And the same is true with leadership. One of our core values is to seek knowledge. So we're investing a lot of energy and providing ways for our team members to do just that book clubs, new internal training courses, as well as access to outside trainings that will be beneficial to them. We're talking more about personal goals and connecting the dots between how what they do at work can directly impact the life they live at home. Default is cozy, status quo, doesn't require a lot or any effort for the most part, but the results are also pretty unremarkable and oftentimes harmful to our lives in the bigger picture. I'm encouraging you today to take a look at your organization from 30,000 feet. What do you see? Where are the holes? Now take a look at you from 30,000 feet. Are you being the leader you know you are called to be? I haven't always. And I know I have a long way to go, but I'm severely dedicated, strongly dedicated is probably the better word, to growing into the place where I know my team, my family, my community. And I I'm not saying this like I'm responsible for the economy, but I am a piece of the puzzle that is responsible for the economy. And so are you. So I could talk about this all day long and am willing to. So if you are so inclined, please reach out to me at podcast at ladderroofing.com. Let me know what you think about leadership. What ideas have you had to better strengthen the economy around you and your business? It's a piece of that. I love this conversation. Don't be shy. Reach out. We will be at RoofCon in Orlando this weekend. It begins Sunday, November 6th, right? And runs through Tuesday. And I really hope to see you there. Please stop by our booth for a game of cornhole and refreshments. There will be no agenda to sell to you. We are genuinely interested in growing this community. And sometimes that means just having a face-to-face conversation like the good old days. And that's what I'll be there to do. I am inviting you now, please stop by our booth and spend some time so we can get to know each other. If we aren't friends yet on social media, let's change that. Lastly, you can help me grow this community by reviewing and sharing the show. I would really appreciate that as we are a new show and are looking to be as beneficial as possible. That would be very much appreciated if you could tell a friend about us who you think might benefit from the content we're producing. So this was a short episode this week, not because there isn't hours upon hours that we could talk about leadership and we will. This is just sort of an intro to get your thoughts headed in the same direction. Get out of that default mode and into the design of your business and your life and really recognize how we are not living in a bubble or a vacuum. What you're pouring into your people and your business and your customers affects so much more than we really can even comprehend. Let's continue looking for ways to strengthen that because our economy and society literally need you to do that. Not to mention your family, your customers, they need people they can trust as well. And what better way to grow as a person, human being, and business owner than to do some good in the world and build the leaders on your team. That doesn't mean just those in management. Everyone, when they feel and are acting the part of the leader, they show up in ways that that they likely never have before. So let's focus on that. Okay, that's it for me. So as always, guys, until next time, peace and profits.
