Skull Session 43 with Matt Fox

Matt Fox Episode 43

Matt Fox of the metalcore band Shai Hulud and more than a few projects like Zombie Apocalypse talks with me about the band's impact on what was a new sub-genre of music in the early 2000s. Namely the introduction of clean melodies and complex guitar work to a medium that was mainly derided as aggressive and simplistic metal riffing in a bro-heavy outgrowth of hardcore punk. If you weren't there, it's hard to fully realize the impact of this.
Eager to do artwork for a band I respected, I learned the hard way that indecisive young kids would make life for a working artist a nightmare!
To them, it was a labor of love, and they were unaware of the expenses accrued. Three oil paintings, two watercolor paintings, and several drawings later I was left holding the bag as they struggled with finances and a scene that loved their work but grew reticent to pay for anything.
All that aside, me and Matt remained friends, and hindsight being 20/20, it became more of a learning experience. In this episode, we talk about how things progressed and what Matt is working on now.
