Sci-fi, YA, and suspense writer Mike Pickard talks about his progress and new work.
As a kid, I never appreciated Young Adult books (although, to be fair, this was in the early stages of the genre, the late '70s). The books always had the vibe that they were talking down to me, an aspect I heartily resented. I used to read with a Merriam-Webster dictionary by my side, appreciating and researching words that were unknown or out of common parlance.
We discussed this aspect, and his reply was similar to that of Jeff Strand. Namely, the characters might use more childlike discourse, but the plot remains complex.
