Dec 31 Getting Older Thinking Differently
I'm almost 82 years old and have had threats against me for my constitutionally conservative radio spots and essays. So when I, or a loved one with me is exposed to danger, I often pack. I've owned a concealed carry permit nearly all my adult life, and long ago the NRA qualified me as expert.
But I don't like to think about shooting anything for any reason. Then last week, I was attacked by a dog. It came out of nowhere, the gun came out, but I saw some kids not too far away, and I didn't shoot. The dog was subdued without shooting it, and I ended up with a couple of nasty bites. But that was the extent of the damage.
Had I used deadly force on that dog, it wouldn't have ended for the kids. I think they might have been traumatized, perhaps for years.
(By the way, the dog was taken to a pound and we won't see it again.) But I was thinking of when you get older, you consider your actions more carefully, and how they may affect others. At least, I do.
