The How Podcast

The Brothers

Nick Season 2 Episode 5

What makes a successful start up?  Is it the idea, the people, enough capital or the competitive environment?  Consumers are presented with a new tech start up every week and in the last 2 decades we have seen some incredible success stories - Airbnb, Instagram, Pinterest, Uber & Square to name a few.

But not every startup makes it to the Nasdaq or attracts venture capital. The reality is most startups struggle to make it to year 3.  One the key reasons for failure is a bad partner. So who do you choose? They say going into business with friends is fraught with danger, so is an acquaintance or stranger.

Sometimes it’s better the devil you know.

In this episode of the How Podcast, Nick Guidera chats to Rhys & Jordan Rogers, brothers, entrepreneurs & Founders of prop tech business Before You Bid.

The Rogers brothers share their story about leaving the corporate world behind, in pursuit of a very simple idea. They talk about the realities of a start-up, managing people, being a dad and pursuing a tech business without the background in coding. Rhys shared why professional poker has its limitations and how his experience in insolvency shaped his focus on the need for a revenue model. Jordan touches on when to take the plunge from corporate world to startup, why so many startups fail and the lessons for others who are embarking on their next challenge.
