Why did Jesus allow his friend Lazarus to get sick and die?

  • For God’s Glory (John 11:4)
  • That we may believe (John 11:14-15)

As the Resurrection and the Life, Jesus has authority over life, death, and eternity.
Revelation 1:17-18

What are we to Believe?
John 11:17-27

  1. Jesus, I believe you can heal (John 11:21)
  2. Jesus, I believe you can do anything (John 11:22)
  3. Jesus, I believe in life after death (John 11:23-24)

Common Beliefs in Jesus’ Day about the Afterlife:

  • Pharisees: Souls are immortal. The Good are resurrected, and the Wicked suffer eternal punishment.
  • Sadducees: No immortal soul and no afterlife.
  • Greek/Roman Influence: Souls are immortal and go to one of three places: The Underworld, Elysium, or Tartarus.
