Welcome to the podcast. I'm Isaac Carroll, and this is what Do I Know. Alright, in today's Bible reading we're going to be picking back up in Luke 16. If you're ready, let us begin.
Speaker 1:Jesus also said to his disciples there was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. So he called him in to ask what is this I hear about? You Turn in an account of your management, for you cannot be a manager any longer. The manager said to himself what shall I do Now that my master is taking away my position? I'm too weak to dig and I'm too ashamed to beg. I know what I'll do, so that, after my removal from management, people will welcome me into their homes. And he called each one of his master's debtors. How much do you owe my master? He asked the first A hundred measures of olive oil. He answered Take your bill, said the manager, sit down quickly and write fifty. Then he asked another how much do you owe? A hundred measures a week? He replied Take your bill and write eighty. He told him.
Speaker 1:The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly, for the sons of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than they are with sons of light. I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends for yourselves, so that when it's gone, they will welcome you into an eternal dwelling. Whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will be dishonest with much. So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches? And if you have not been faithful with the belongings of another, who will give you the belongings of your own? No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this and they were scoffing at Jesus. So he said to them you are the ones who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your heart, for what is prized among men is detestable before God.
Speaker 1:The law and the prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the gospel of the kingdom of God is being preached and everyone is forcing his way into it. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for a single stroke of the pen to drop out of the law. Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous splendor, and a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores and longing to be fed from the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
Speaker 1:One day. The beggar died and was carried to Abraham's side, and the rich man also died and he was buried in Hades where he was tormented. And he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus at his side. So he cried out Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in this fire. But Abraham answered Child, remember that during your lifetime we received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here while you are in agony. Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so even those who wish cannot cross from here to you, nor can anyone cross from there to us. Then I beg you, father, he said, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them so that they will not also end up in this place of torment. But Abraham replied they have Moses and the prophets. Let your brothers listen to them. No, father Abraham, he said. But if someone was sent from the dead, they will repent'. Then Abraham said to him "'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not persuade it, even if someone rises from the dead'". Luke 17.
Speaker 1:Jesus said to his disciples "'It is inevitable that stumbling blocks will come, but woe to the one through whom they come. It would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck and thrown into the sea than to cause one of Watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. Even if he sins against you seven times in a day and seven times returned to say I repent, you must forgive him. The apostle said to him increase our faith. And the Lord answered if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree be uprooted and planted in the sea and it will obey you. Which of you whose servant comes in from plowing or shepherding in the field will say to him Come at once and sit down to eat. Instead, won't he tell him Prepare my meal and dress yourself to serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you may eat and drink? Does he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? So you also, when you have done everything commanded of you, should say we are unworthy servants. We have only done our duty.
Speaker 1:While Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he was passing between Samaria and Galilee and as he entered one of the villages he was met by ten lepers. They stood at a distance and raised their voices, shouting Jesus, master, have mercy on us. When Jesus saw them, he said Go, show yourselves to the priest. And as they were on their way, they were cleansed. When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back praising God in a loud voice. He fell face down at Jesus' feet, thanking him. And he was a Samaritan. Were not ten of you cleaned? Jesus asked when are the other nine? Was no one found except this foreigner to return and give glory to God? Then Jesus said to him Rise and go. Your faith has made you well.
Speaker 1:When asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, jesus replied the kingdom of God will not come with observable signs. Nor will people say Look here it is or there it is, for you see, the kingdom of God is in your midst. Then he said to the disciples the time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of man, but you will not see it. People will tell you Look there he is or look here he is. Do not go out or chase after them, for just as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so will be the Son of man in his day, but first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of man. People were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark. Then the floods came and destroyed them all. It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling and planting and building, but on that day Lot left Sodom. Fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. It will be just like that on the day the Son of man is revealed. On that day, let no one on the housetop go down to retrieve his possessions. Likewise, let no one in the field return from anything he has left behind. Remember Lot's wife Whoever tries to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it. Luke 18.
Speaker 1:And the Lord said carried out justice on their behalf. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on the earth To some who trusted in their own righteousness and viewed others with contempt? He also told this parable Two men went out to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed God, I thank you that I am not like the other men, swindlers and evildoers and adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and I pay tithes of all that I acquire. But the tax collector stood at the distance, unwilling even to lift his eyes to heaven. Instead, he beat his breast and said God, his hands on them.
Speaker 1:And when the disciples saw this, they rebuked those who brought them. But Jesus called the children to himself and said Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. For truly, I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Then a certain ruler asked him good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Why do you call me good? Jesus replied no one is good except God alone. You know the commandments Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witnesses and honor your father and mother. All these I have kept from my youth, he said.
Speaker 1:On hearing this, jesus told him you still lack one thing Sell everything you own and give it to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then come and follow me. But when the ruler heard this, he became very sad, because he was extremely wealthy. Seeing the man's sadness, jesus said how hard is it for the rich to enter the kingdom of God? Indeed, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Those who heard this asked Well, who then can be saved? But Jesus replied what is impossible for man is possible for God. Look, said Peter, we have left it all to follow you. Truly, I tell you, jesus replied, no one who has left home or wife or brother or parent or child for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times more in this age and in the age to come, eternal life. Then Jesus took the twelve aside and said to them Look, we are going to Jerusalem and everything the prophets have written about the Son of man will be fulfilled. He will be delivered over to the Gentiles and he will be mocked and insulted and spit upon. They will flog him and kill him and on the third day he will rise again. But the disciples did not understand any of these things. The meaning was hidden from them. They did not comprehend what he was saying.
Speaker 1:As Jesus drew near Jericho, a blind man was sitting beside the road begging. When he heard that a crowd was going by, he asked what was happening. Jesus of Nazareth is passing by. They told him. He called out Jesus, the Son of David, have mercy on me. Those who had led the way admonished him to be silent. But he cried out all the louder Son of David, have mercy on me. Jesus stopped and directed that the man be brought to him. When he had brought him near, jesus asked him what do you want me to do for you, lord. He said let me see again, receive your sight. Jesus replied your faith has healed you Immediately. He received his sight and followed Jesus glorifying God, and all the people who saw this gave praise to God. All right, that's all the time I have for today. Tomorrow we'll pick back up in Luke 19. Until then, god bless you and goodbye.
