Speaker 1:

Welcome to the podcast. I'm Isaac Carroll, and this is what Do I Know. All right, in today's Bible reading we're going to be picking back up in Mark 15. If you're ready, let us begin. Early in the morning, the chief priest, elders, scribes and the whole Sanhedrin had devised a plan. They bound Jesus and led him away and handed him over to Pilate. So Pilate questioned him Are you the king of the Jews? You have said so. Jesus replied, and the chief priest began to accuse him of many things. Then Pilate questioned him again have you no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against you. But to Pilate's amazement, jesus made no further reply.

Speaker 1:

Now it was Pilate's custom at the feast to release the people. A prisoner of their choosing and a man named Barbarus was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder during their insurrection. So the crowd went and began to ask Pilate to keep his custom. Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? Pilate asked, for he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priest had handed Jesus over, but the chief priest stirred up the crowd and had them release Barabbas to them instead. So Pilate asked them again what, then, do you want me to do with the one you call the king of the Jews. And they shouted back Crucify him. Why, asked Pilate. What evil has he done? But they shouted all the louder Crucify him. And wishing to satisfy the crowd, pilate released Barabbas to them, but he had Jesus flogged and handed him over to be crucified. Then the soldiers led Jesus away into the palace, that is, the praetorium, and they called the whole company together and they dressed him in purple robes, twisting together a crown of thorns and they set it on his head and they began to salute him. Hail, king of the Jews. They kept striking his head with a staff and spitting on him and they knelt down and bowed before him. And after they had mocked him, they removed the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

Speaker 1:

Now Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way from the country and the soldiers forced him to carry the cross to Jesus. They brought Jesus to a place called Gagatha, which means the place of the skull. There they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it and they crucified him. They also divided his garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take. It was the third hour and they crucified him and the charge against him read the King of the Jews Along with Jesus.

Speaker 1:

They crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left, and those who passed by heaped abuse on him, shaking their heads and saying Aha, you are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. Come down from the cross and save yourself. In the same way, the chief priests and scribes mocked him among themselves, saying he saved others, but he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down from the cross so that we may see and believe. And even those who were crucified with him berated him. And from the sixth hour until the ninth hour, darkness came over all the land. At the ninth hour, jesus cried out in a loud voice Eloi, eloi, lima sabbatani, which means my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? When some of those standing nearby heard this, they said behold, he is calling to elijah. And someone ran up and lifted a sponge with sour wine and put it on a reed and held it up to jesus to drink, saying leave him alone. Let us see if elijah comes and takes him down, but jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last, and the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion standing there in front of Jesus saw how he had breathed his last, he said Truly this man was the Son of God. And there was also some women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, mary, the mother of James the younger, and of Joseph and Solomon. These women had followed Jesus and ministered to him while he was in Galilee, and there were many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with him.

Speaker 1:

Now it was already evening, since it was preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God, boldly went to Pilate to ask him for the body of Jesus. Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, so that he summoned the centurion to ask him if this was so. When Pilate had confirmed it with the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. So Joseph brought a linen cloth, took down the body of Jesus and wrapped him in the cloth and placed it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb, mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joseph, saw where his body was placed, mark 16. When the Sabbath was over, mary Magdalene, mary, the mother of James and Salomon brought spices so they could go and anoint the body of Jesus.

Speaker 1:

Very early the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they went to the tomb. They were asking one another who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb. But when they looked up they saw that the stone had already been rolled away, even though it was extremely large. When they entered the tomb they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. But he said to them Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus, the Nazarene who was crucified. He has risen. He is not here. See the place where they put him, but go tell his disciples and Peter, he is going ahead of them into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you. So the women left the tomb and ran trembling and bewildered and in their fear they did not say a word to anyone.

Speaker 1:

Early in the first day of the week after Jesus had risen, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had driven out seven demons. She went and told those who had been with him, who were mourning and weeping, when they had heard, that Jesus was alive and she had seen him. They did not believe it. After this, jesus appeared in a different form to two of them as they walked along in the country. They went back and reported to the rest, but they did not believe them either.

Speaker 1:

Later, as they were eating, jesus appeared to the eleven and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of hearts because they did not believe those who had seen him after he had risen. And he said to them Go into the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe In my name. They will drive out demons, they will speak in many tongues, they will pick up snakes with their hands and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them. They will lay their hands on the sick and they will be made well. After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God, and they went out and preached everywhere and the Lord worked through them, confirming his word by the signs that accompanied it. All right, that's all the time we have for today. This concludes the book of Mark, and tomorrow we'll start the book of Matthew. Until then.
