Welcome to the podcast. I'm Isaac Carroll, and this is what Do I Know? All right, in today's Bible reading we're going to be picking back up in Matthew 25. If you're ready, let us begin. Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and they went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise, for when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry here is the bridegroom, come out to meet him. Then all the virgins rose and trimmed their lamps and the foolish said to the wise Give us some oil, for our lamps are going out. But the wise answered saying Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealer and buy for yourselves. And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also saying Lord, lord, open for us. But he answered Truly I say to you I do not know. You Watch, therefore, for you neither know the day nor the hour.
Speaker 1:For it will be like the man going on a journey who called his servants and entrusted them to his property. To one he gave five talents and to another he gave two talents and to another he gave one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who received the five talents went out and at once traded with him and he made five more talents. So also the one who had two, he went out and made two more talents. But he who received the one talent went and dug in the ground and he hid the master's money.
Speaker 1:Now, after a long time, the master of those servants came to settle accounts with him and he who received the five talents came forward bringing five talents more, saying Master, you delivered to me five talents. Here I have made five more talents. Saying, master, you delivered to me five talents, here I have made five more talents. His master said to him Well done, good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a little. I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master. And he also, who had two talents, came forward saying Master, you delivered to me two talents. Here I made two more talents. And his master said to him Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.
Speaker 1:He also, who had received the one talent, came forward saying Master, I know you to be a hard man, reaping where you do not sow and gathering where you have scattered no seed. So I was afraid and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours. But his master answered him and said so take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents, for to everyone who has more will be given and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away and cast that worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Speaker 1:When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats he will put on the left. Then the king will say to those on the right Come you, who are blessed by my Father, inherit the king prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, drink, and I was a stranger and you welcomed me in. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer and said Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? And when did we see you as a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you in prison or sick and visit you? And the king will answer them Truly. I say to you, as you did to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it for me that he will say to those on the left Depart from me. You cursed into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels, for I was hungry and you gave me no food and I was thirsty and you gave me no drink. I was a stranger and you did not welcome me in Naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison, and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer saying Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to you? Then he will answer them saying Truly I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me and these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. Matthew 26.
Speaker 1:When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples you know that after two days the Passover is coming and the Son of man will be delivered up to be crucified. Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the house of Simon the leper. A woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment and she poured it on his head as he reclined at the table. And when the disciples saw it, they were very indignant, saying why this waste? For this could have been sold for a very large sum and given to the poor. But Jesus, aware of this, said to them why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a very beautiful thing to me, for you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it to prepare me for burial. Truly, I say to you, truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.
Speaker 1:Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Issachar, went to the chief priest and said what will you give me if I deliver him over to you? They paid him thirty pieces of silver and from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him. Now, on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus saying when will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover, he said? He said, go into the city to a certain man and say to him the teacher says my time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus directed them and they prepared the Passover.
Speaker 1:When it was evening, he reclined at the table with the twelve and as they were eating, he said Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me. They were very sorrowful and they began to say to him, one after another Is it I Lord? He answered he who dips his hand in the dish with me will betray me. The Son of man goes as it is written of him. But woe to that man whom the Son of man has betrayed. It would have been better for that man if he had never been born. Judas who would betray him answered Is it I Rabbi? He said to him you have said so Now.
Speaker 1:As they were eating, jesus took bread and after blessing it, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said Take, eat, this is my body. And he took the cup and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom. And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them you will all fall away because of me this night, for it is written, I will strike this shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered, but after I am raised up I will go before you to Galilee. Peter answered him Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away. Jesus said to him Truly. I tell you this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times. Peter said to him Even if I am to die with you, I will not deny you. And all the disciples said the same.
Speaker 1:Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane and he said to his disciples Sit here while I go over there and pray. And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them my soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch with me. And going a little further, he fell on his face and prayed my father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.
Speaker 1:And he came to the disciples and he found them sleeping. And he said to Peter so could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit, indeed, is willing, but the flesh is weak. Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed my father, if this cannot pass, unless I drink it, your will be done. And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and he said to them Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.
Speaker 1:While he was still speaking, judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs from the chief priests and from the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign saying the one I will kiss is the man. Seize him. And he came up to Jesus and at once said Greetings, do what you came to do. Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him and behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and he drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. Then Jesus said to him Put your sword back in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my father and he will at once send more than twelve legions of angels. But how, then, should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so? At that hour, jesus said to the crowds have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day, I have sat in the temple teaching and you did not seize me. But all of this has taken place so that the Scriptures of the prophets will be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him and fled.
Speaker 1:Then those who had seized Jesus led him to see Iphes, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered, and Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards to see the end. Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses had came forward. At least two came forward and said this man said that I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days. And the high priest stood up and said have you no answer to make? What is it that these men are testifying against you? But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him I enjoy you by the living God. Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God. And Jesus said to him you have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven. What further witness do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your judgment? They answered he deserves death. Then they spit in his face and he struck him and some slapped him saying prophecy for us, you, christ. Who is it that struck you?
Speaker 1:Now peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came up to him and said you also were with jesus the galilean. But he denied it before them all, saying I do not know what you mean. And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him and she said to the bystanders this man was with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied it with an oath I do not know the man. After a little while, the bystanders came up and said to Peter Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you. Then he began to invoke curses on himself and to swear I do not know the man. And immediately the rooster crowed and Peter remembered the saying of Jesus before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times. And he went away and he wept bitterly. All right, that's all the time we have for today. Tomorrow we'll pick back up in Matthew 27. No-transcript.
