What should you do during a chronic illness flare-up?

In Episode 100 of Balance Banter, Functional Nutrition Practitioner and Exercise Physiologist Kristie Calise shares a simple, gentle approach to supporting your body when chronic illness symptoms get louder.

Whether your flare looks like increased fatigue, pain, inflammation, digestive symptoms, dizziness, nervous system overwhelm, or simply waking up knowing today is NOT going to be a good day, the first priority is simple:

Rest does not need to be earned.

A flare is not the time to force yourself through a complicated wellness routine or push your body to perform. But there are also gentle ways you may be able to support your body while giving it the rest it needs.

In this episode, Kristie discusses:

  • Why rest should be a priority during a chronic illness flare
  • Returning to simple foundational habits like hydration, nourishing food, sleep, and morning light
  • When very gentle movement, stretching, seated exercise, or mobility may feel supportive
  • When movement may NOT be appropriate and rest is the better choice
  • Using meditation, breathwork, Yoga Nidra, and relaxation practices to support a calmer nervous system
  • Choosing easy, nourishing meals without turning food into another flare-day project
  • Why you do not need to accomplish every supportive habit at once
  • The simple question to ask yourself during a flare: “What would support my body today without asking too much from it?”

Kristie also explains why Balance: Chronic Illness Care was intentionally designed with both Move and Reset days.

On higher-capacity days, Balance offers strengthening, gentle exercise, POTS-friendly movement, mobility, and other movement options.

On flare days and lower-energy days, you can return to the Balance BaSIX foundational habits, choose gentle movement if appropriate, use nervous system regulation tools, find a simple anti-inflammatory recipe—or simply rest.

Because chronic illness support should be able to change when your body does.

The goal during a flare is not to do everything perfectly or force yourself back to baseline as quickly as possible.

It is to meet your body where it is and gently give it the support it needs today.
