What up everybody? I'm your host, JP, and this is my co-host Josh. Hey everybody. And welcome back to another episode of the Film Bros Podcast. Alright, Josh. I'm giddy with joy today. Giddy, I tell you, giddy. I'm giddy. And if you want if you if you know me, you know why I'm giddy, Josh. I'm gonna need you to tell them what we're gonna be talking about today so we could just start just ripping into it because I need to talk about it.
SPEAKER_03Today we are reviewing Star Wars Mall Shadow Lord 2026.
SPEAKER_00The Empire tried to kill me. The mall will never be a highlight.
SPEAKER_02Three Josh. It doesn't matter what they can see, but it doesn't matter what you can see. That's mall right there. That's my dog. Alright, I've been waiting for this day. Alright. I I you know I kind of had this day or I had a good day of of this when like season seven of the Clone Wars dropped, right? And we basically had like a good a good chunk of Maul at the back end there. I you know, I think I was gonna get it like this one day. One time I was a child, I thought he was cut in half, never gonna see him again. And here we are in 2026. He got his own show. He got his own show. And you know what? I thought his journey wouldn't have been over in Rebels when, you know, spoiler alert, but if you've seen Rebels, you know what basically comes to Maul, and that's you know, basically Kenobi all over again. Uh pause. Pause. Um, but yeah, so that you know, you know his end. I thought I thought we were done. I thought the mall ship has sailed, but here, like I said, here we are in 2026 with a mall Star Wars show. What your favorite Star Wars character get a show?
SPEAKER_03No, unless right player. He shows up on the another stuff, but I mean, no.
SPEAKER_02He ain't got his own show, though, right? No, not like this. Now I'm in a I'm on a bragging boat of my own kind, dude. It's crazy. It's crazy. Uh but uh Josh, what do you think about you know Maul Shadow Lord? Obviously, this has been like a hype train for a lot of people. A lot of Star Wars fans were really uh wondering where could they have taken this character um even more? Uh obviously May the 4th was yesterday, so uh today is May the 5th at the time of recording, May the 5th, Revenge of the Fifth or something like that, right? Yeah Josh, what'd you think about uh sh sh you know, at least Maul getting his own show, first of all? Like what'd you think about him finally getting his own show, especially after the history that we know of him up until now? And I mean, what what'd you think about walking into the show? Like what were you what how how are you what was your mindset walking into the show?
SPEAKER_03I thought it was I mean, my mindset was that I'm excited for it. I mean, I I didn't want to wait for it to come out all at once because I like the binge model, and at the same time other shows are coming out, so I was like, okay, you know what? Maybe I could put this on the back burner a little bit, let it accumulate for a cool minute. Um if you would have told me way back when, after seeing Darth Maul get cut in half, he that he'd come back and he'd have his own show and all that stuff, I would have been like, you're fucking crazy. He died right in front of me, you know? But no, I was I'm pretty excited. I think this I think this was a great first season for him. I mean, we know we'll dive into that a little bit deeper, but I mean we know where his story does end. So, like, this show is pretty good for what it is, but I don't know what it could be setting up. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Um, well, I mean well, yeah, I kind of I mean we kind of figured from the little bit of breadcrumbs from solo and stuff, but we'll I mean we'll obviously talk about it towards the end of it. Um for me though, I gotta be honest, Josh. When I heard this show was happening, I jumped in the air, did not come down for three days.
SPEAKER_00That was crazy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, dude. Feet were off the floor. I was like a ghost, dude. Just I I didn't even move. I was in there, defecating on the floor in the middle of, you know. It was a long drop, splashed a little bit. It is what it is. Um you gotta think, I was floating in the air for three days, Josh. It's insane. Um, but I was waiting for this show. I was uh beyond excited. Okay gotta be honest, and we're gonna talk about this by the end of it. Wasn't fully satisfied, might have been good for an you know, for you know, to keep me hungry for season two, but maybe you can help me unpack it because I was I am excited. I still find myself very much enjoying this season. Um But maybe we can kind of unpack where it kind of felt short for me. And I don't know if it kind of fell short for you on a couple of aspects. Um me, I think it was just a big one, and it was just one or I would say it's two things, two, in my opinion, big ones that I think uh I hope would be rectified in the second season because they're I think they're minor things. I don't think that they need to be um I don't think it needs to be looked into too hard, but I think that they're minor things that could turn into big things if we let them sit for too long, if that makes sense. Um uh but we'll we'll talk about it, we'll unpack it. Uh Josh, 98% on the tomato meter for season one, 92% on the popcorn meter. Are we in agreement with the tomato meter?
SPEAKER_03I thought it was great. I mean, a little low. I would low expect a little both in the 90s. They're both in the nineties. Well, yeah, but I mean I'd expect closer to 100, that's what I'm saying. Oh, well, one's 98. I'm expecting even numbers there. 90 92 is a little disconnected for me. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02You're expecting the the fans to like it a little bit more. I wonder what um I never I haven't looked into it and probably look into it after this episode, or maybe we could probably do a little dive into it, but I wonder why people or at least that majority probably or a minority disliked the show, right? Um, I would wonder what that could be. Maybe it's probably the same gripes as me. I don't know. We'll we'll have to figure that out though. Interesting lineup, interesting lineup. Uh Dave Falone is one of the creators on the show, um, but very much different directors throughout the episodes. Um, but Dave Faloney is one of the main drivers to this show. Apparently, Sam Whitmer had a lot of uh say so within this show as well, and Sam Whitmer plays uh Maul himself. Uh so it's very much uh what is it? It's very much a team effort, and I appreciate the the love and the care that they kind of put into the show with uh I guess you could say with the team effort that we basically get off you know the the hands of Falone. Uh Favro is also in the mix with that as well, so it's great stuff, great stuff. Uh like I said though, Sam Whitmer did return as Maul. Uh Dennis Haysbert is Master Iko Diodaki. Um if we all know him, he's the all-state guy. Yeah, allstate guy. Getting an Al Don as D Von, uh, Richard Yoda as two boots, Wagner Mora as Brandon Lawson, um, and so on and so forth. We just got a bunch of voice acting casts, which they did phenomenal. Can't even cap. They did an amazing job, so it is what it is. We'll probably dive into it a little bit more. But Josh, season one came and went. Season one came and went. Ten episodes of Pure Maul Goodness. Pure Maul Goodness. Um, Josh, you kind of want to run down for us a little bit of what season one included. Obviously, spoilers up ahead for those who haven't seen the episodes yet. Go check them out. But if not, stick with us. We're gonna let you know whether or not it's worth the watch. But you know, we'll try to keep it as spoiler-free as possible. But there is spoilers because we can't control when we slip up. So it is what it is. Walk away now. Josh, let him know what season one's about.
SPEAKER_03The whole season was about Darth Maw and his crew coming back into power after the Empire's Um reign. He's looking to do something else. He he runs into some trouble. Obviously, law enforcement's in the way. Uh he meets a new he wants a new apprentice. We meet we that's where the two Jedi come from. I would say this show does a lot between its first and all the way to its last episode. Um he gets a little thwarted by some inquisitors who we've met before. Um but for the most part we are very much on the way to where we met him or where he we had seen him last in live action in solo. And that's not really a spoiler. That movie's been out for close to ten years already, I think.
SPEAKER_02So either you watched it or you were somebody who hated it because other people told you to hate it.
SPEAKER_03So Right, right.
SPEAKER_02Pick your lane and driving it. Um yes, so basically it, a lot of um uh packing into these episodes. Uh one thing I gotta just bring up right now, just off-rip, just just to kind of start it off. I gotta say every single one of these episodes were just a little too short. I gotta be honest, these these, you know, if you're gonna put out 20-minute episodes, I just say make a short film of it and just go from there, right? Just make a small Clone Wars movie or like a Clone Wars mall edition or special edition or something and just kind of go from there. I do feel like a good chunk of these episodes were pretty short, and obviously they connected well because um Star Wars and Disney and all them were basically putting out uh episodes two times every single week. And it makes sense because they connect every single time, like from one to another, boom boom, boom. I would just assume that you just kind of make them a little bit longer. Twenty-minute episodes were kind of a bummer for me.
SPEAKER_03Um I kind of I don't know. I thought I thought so too. Like I I I want to say I agree with that. At the same time, following Clone Wars formula, this makes sense, you know what I mean? And they're quality and they're crafted, and they can't and they were cared for.
SPEAKER_02No, yeah, but that's what I'm saying, is that Clone Wars was made for TV. They had no choice but to integrate, like, you know, commercials and you know, do all that stuff. Like they it was made for TV. But we've outgrew that. We're on Disney Plus. They I mean you don't necessarily need to do a binge model, and I'm not necessarily saying that you have to do one whole movie. If they still wanted to make their money and do a weekly episode, they could have made 45 minute episodes.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02If they're both 20 minutes, I I think that was just a good annoying part for me was that like you get done with an episode and it's like stop. And then you go and it's like the same you basically it's not like you start off like the clone wars in a different episode at a different time or something like that, right? Like it stops and you pick up where you left off basically, and that's like I mean, I understand, like I said, putting it out in episodes to keep people watching for a couple months because a little bit of subscription, but some of that money gouging is it kind of hurts the show in my opinion. And I it sucks to say for a mall show, but I just I just think that we could have rode the ride a little bit better without all the stops.
SPEAKER_03Right. It doesn't help that they also kept doing the damn um preview of like, oh, what you saw last week or whatever. But it's like I'm watching it all now, I just seen that happen.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and my thing is too, is that I thought it was funny because the show is like all like glue doom and gloom, and you know, every all shit's happening and stuff like that. And then when you get a recap, it was like Tron like aesthetic retro like music. It was like and I'm like, oh my god, like you're really hyping this up, and then you you get into the show and it's like all doom and gloom, and as you know, death is happening and shit, and you're like, wow, well, this is nothing like the recap at all whatsoever. Um, but I don't know, Josh, do you share any of those gripes with the time and you know, um maybe like the recap? I don't know if you cared about the recap maybe.
SPEAKER_03I mean it was only the recap. I mean, I would say just don't waste time on that. I mean, we all know what we're watching, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02And if I want to rewatch it, I'll watch the episode back or something, right?
SPEAKER_03Right, right, right. Like if I miss something, I mean the reverse the rewind buttons right there, you know?
SPEAKER_02You gotta think, like 20 minute episodes, and some of that 20 minutes is wasted on recap and then credits, so you're basically getting like and not I I did the math, it's more like 26. Uh the longest one that we got was like 28 minutes, but every single one was like 24 to 26 to 28. So you take like two minutes or three minutes off, you're basically watching like a 23 minute episode or something.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean that's like three minutes worth of credits, you know what I mean? So I'm just like, okay, well we could have just made that into a 40-minute episode, and it probably could have cut out some fat and made it ride a little bit better, you know.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I don't like the greedy part of me says, yeah, I'm with you. But the understanding part of me also says that like it was so well crafted, well animated, that 20 minutes doesn't feel like that much of a big deal to me. Uh I guess outside of if you're wasting it, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02I I'm not saying that it I'm not saying that it's it's bad what was in the 20 minutes. What I'm saying is that it's like a it's like a a roller coaster, right? Like, what if like before every single loop of that roller coaster we take a stop and they say, hey, you just gotta re-see the the opening scene again and the little Star Wars logo. Hold on, let me just reshow you the beginning of the ride really quick, and then we're gonna keep going. And we're gonna do that later. And then you do one loop, and then they stop you at the next one, and they're like, Oh, we're gonna just show you the credits and stuff really quick. We're gonna show you everything one more time, and then you're gonna go. And you can click, you could click, skip recap. It's not a big deal. You can click all last time, like you can skip all that now, but still, it's like just the fact that we're going and we have to stop. You know what I mean? I think that's what it is. Um, but yeah, uh, just to kind of put it into perspective. So season one, episode one, chasically chapter one, the dark revenge. Josh, what happens in this episode?
SPEAKER_03The dark revenge. So this is kind of the beginning of where it all starts. Kind of basically Maul and his crew okay, yeah. The Maul and his crew show up, and their big plan is to currently set two crime bosses that did him dirty in the past against each other. Which, I mean, it works out for him. So that that's the whole setup for one. And we get introduced to the police uh of that planet, which the whole time I know they're not, but I thought they were on chorus on. I was like, okay. Um, but they weren't. But it kind of looked like yeah. But there's only so many planets you can make, I'm guessing. Right, right, right. So he's trying to come back into power by taking the opponents out that did him dirty in the past.
SPEAKER_02The but the world is called Janix. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. He's in like the underworld of Janics. Um solid first episode. Gotta say, right? Solid first. Um really draws you in everything. Uh the action. I really like how Disney didn't skip away from what makes Clone Wars, and that's basically like it's a kid's show, but you're gonna see a lot of fucking death right now. Let me tell you. There's gonna be a lot of blasters firing and all that stuff. Um I really enjoyed that stuff. Uh the show really started off with a with a great bang. Um, I enjoyed every single second of it. I'm gonna say this for every single episode, so I'm just gonna start it here. The animation is so well done Um in this show. Seeing it start from the Clone Wars movie to like where we are now in 2026, even like from season 7 to now to the jump now, um, from you know the Bad Batch and everything, like we've gone so far, and there's even little improvements that I didn't even think was possible. I thought like when we hit the Bad Batch, we basically hit the the peak of what Clone Wars animators can possibly do. No, no, they give you beautiful ass hand painted like walls, like scenery, they give you some like smooth ass movements. Now I will be honest, season seven was something special when it came to like the Ahsoka Darth Maul fight because like that fight just felt fluid because they actually use like mocap and everything. This this season didn't have any of that. I don't feel like it had any of that. It felt like you know, back to like the Clone Wars, like animated fighting and all that stuff, and that's perfectly fine with me. I never really had an issue, but once you get a taste of it and you go back to what that was, you're just like ah, ah, okay.
SPEAKER_03That's fine. Well, I mean, I I I understand, but dude, did you see the way they were moving?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, they were good, they were doing good. That's what I'm saying. No motherfucker is doing that for real. Good a good, I guess it's a good in-between for me, right? Like it's a good step down from like the greatest that you they've got in it, but it's not like the worst. Though you know what I'm saying, like it's a good in-between. Like you're paying good money to get something that still looks fairly decent, you know what I'm saying? So it's nice. Um but I like I said, I did like the beginning of uh this season very much with this episode. I mean, what did you think?
SPEAKER_03I thought it was great. I thought it was a nice first opening for everything going on. We I mean, I thought we were gonna we're gonna do this bullshit where it's gonna be like, oh, who's really pulling the strings, and then we get to episode five and we know it's Maul and all that stuff, but no, they were like, You're here to see Maul. Here's Maul and all his glory. You know what I mean? And that's that's that. Yeah. Um as far as the Jedi, as far as the Jedi, I I like that we're getting like new characters and stuff, and he wants a an apprentice of some sort. I I mean, how do I guess the question is how do we really feel that we're all of a sudden getting all these randos surviving just so they can continue the plot of like, oh, this Jedi needs to encounter the Sith and question their values and all that stuff while on the run. Like, I don't know. And then I don't even think they really explain how they survived either.
SPEAKER_02How those they did? Well, no, I mean they basically they went into hygiene like everybody else. It's basically isn't it the same thing? Um but I mean they didn't really lean too heavy on the Jedi and everything in this one. They kind of introduced them, but it wasn't really like a big thing. I I feel like this one was more setting up this one and the second one. So I think we should probably talk about them in twos. With like chapter two, Sinister Ski uh Sinister Schemes. It really continues what happens with the first one. Um, like I said, I I feel like it just kind of breaks it up um like right in the middle of like what the story's supposed to be because it's just him having the issues with the with the law enforcement on Jan X because of the the you know the the underworld dealings that he's trying to do and all that stuff. Um and I do think like both episodes like are well done. Like I said, these two could have probably just been one full episode instead of having to cut it into two. Uh, but other than that, it is a great start to what I thought was uh a good path to put him on because we know where he's gonna be by solo. And I think that's an issue that some people probably take with these kinds of shows where it's like it's a prequel. Same thing with Andors, like, well, we know his end is over there, but I said this before, I'm gonna say it again. I think Star Wars has nailed down the whole kill this character and make us really love him later on kind of thing. Like they've nailed that kind of formula down. Um, but Josh, what do you what did you think about like chapter two as well on top on top of it? Like I said, I feel like they kind of do blend very well, if you agree.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, I mean you know, that's the thing. This is what a show does. Remember when we talked about it on Invincible? Go check that episode out. But you know how a show is supposed to flow and it doesn't feel like, oh, Maul's on the run. Well, next episode he's not on the run, and we've cleared it up in mere seconds. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Like that's right, off screen.
SPEAKER_03That is off screen. That is what shows are supposed to do. We talk about flow within TV shows and stuff, and the show does it very well. Um, I thought it was great. I th I kind of enjoyed seeing the cop do cop things, you know what I mean? I I'm glad that they're not really shying away. I like this partner, uh, two boots. Or yeah, so yeah. I thought he was cool. Um just another old rugged cop and partner that does things by the book, except big I mean he's a droid. Um I like I still enjoy how Maul was keeping his prisoners and all that stuff and really trying to get in their heads about it along with what his big plan is next for the pikes and all that stuff. So I mean I like the scheming. I like the he scheming and I like that the cop is basically trying to figure out who the fuck he is.
SPEAKER_02I I guess the bet I a good way to put it as well and I mean if you don't agree with me you could totally let me know but like they they s they put Maul in a good position these first two episodes to like 'cause you didn't see where he went after he left in season seven. So this one kind of set him up in a way where it's like he's already actively at work rebuilding his empire doing whatever he needs to do and all that stuff so it's it's it hits a little bit more like we didn't miss a step. Like this is exactly where we thought he was going to be basically right um but then episode three uh basically takes a turn because you know we kind of get a get a glimpse of the Jedi's in episodes one and two but then you really get a little bit more uh behind that uh towards the end of episode two because obviously they they gotta start introducing them and we're gonna start seeing what what basically happens next. But um chapter three Whispers in the unknown and chapter four Pride and Revenge. Um this like I said we we kind of introduced Devin in this one right or a little bit more uh Devin is played by Jide and Adlon which not a bad pick. I I really liked her voice acting um I I enjoyed her as a character and Dennis Hayes Burstmaster Ik Dodaki um Josh you want to kind of let us know what happens in these two episodes in episode three Maul is talking to um Devin about her options and stuff about how you can go free or if you want to take a look on the dark side you know see how things really are in the world versus this hope that you're trying to hold on to I can show you that she's kind of not having it she's trying to escape she she does by episode four we get the big you know which you would think would be the climax you know what I mean like if this was a live action show this would be the end but it's not both sides are trying to avoid the Empire so what law enforcement does I can't remember the cop's name Lawson yeah there you go Lawson.
SPEAKER_03Lawson tries to set up a sting to catch Maul what the hell with the Jedi it goes south and immediately the Empire shows up which will lead us into five and six but I enjoyed these two episodes me too me too I like the way Maul talks me too I like how formal he sounds I like when he's talking to her and he's like he's like if you want to see the rage I'll give it to you you're testing my patience are you gonna stay or not like like I mean I kind of butchered that but with him it sounds so formal and it sounds so like you want to just hear this motherfucker keep going you know yeah um what what one thing that I felt like in this episode was planting the seeds was that whole like you know having a Padawan to turn to the dark side and I appreciate that stuff.
SPEAKER_02Um I think this is gonna kind of lead to like my second snag when it came to this one but I hope that it gets a little bit better and kind of dressed up on uh with the next one. I'm kind of tired of the whole Star Wars needs a Padawan to care for kind of thing and I feel like Darth Maul kind of fell into that trap with this one as well. We that later on down the road we do get a little bit of a glimpse of like his life before he was Darth Maul in episode one of the Phantom Menace but I was hoping this show was gonna be more of like looking deep into him more and like why he does what he does and what you know obviously show us a little bit more. Kind of like what they did with um was it Tales of a Jedi with like Ahsoka and they showed you like her training and everything with like little moments that we basically missed. Like I thought we were gonna be getting that kind of season from this but I it just felt like more you know we we get the first two episodes that introduce him back into this world which like I said the the whole his empire trying to build it back up and then by three and four we introduce him to the apprentice that he really wants to kind of pick up and you know have by his side to possibly overthrow Sidious and all that stuff at one point. And then the spoiler but like the rest of the series is basically them on the run after that one right um I was hoping for a little bit more when it came down to like what makes Mall Maul I think we're gonna get that into it season two.
SPEAKER_03I I just think they were really trying to hit it hard so they were like we'll give them the action we'll give them the supply we'll give them all that stuff as far as the Paddle one thing goes I kind of enjoy it.
SPEAKER_02Well I think he's gonna end up doing her dirty 100% I think at the end of the day he's gonna choose himself you know what I mean I mean that kind of leads to one of our first theories but that was you know one of the things that I personally thought we were gonna see but it kind of seems like we're getting to that point where we're gonna see a turn or something but like are we seeing the the makings of a Darth Talon maybe maybe he maybe somewhere down the line after he gets dealt with by Obi-Wan and Rebels again not enough not a spoiler for that either but when he gets done in she finds a way to bring him back or maybe he can't really die because of death and mere magic who knows who knows we're actually I'm just theorizing but you can tell Feloney has favorites I'm I'm just like I'm more thinking about like just the pipeline of like Darth Talon and all that stuff. I think she's gonna die. I don't think we're gonna get that far. I don't know if we're gonna get that far. So no lower accurate Darth Talon or nothing like that?
SPEAKER_03No may I mean maybe like okay sure that's like the obvious answer but I think another route would be like Maul trains her maul trains her mom takes her in and then when shit gets dicey he leaves her like that's that's what I think I think he's gonna be a real coward about it.
SPEAKER_02And then she'll like return back to the light side do you think or she'll just bite the dust?
SPEAKER_03No she'll probably use that fuel her rage we'll see her a couple times and then you know maybe Maul down the line does her in you know but I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Wait wait like we're gonna see her a couple times like it's gonna be like that Scott Pilgrim vs the world movie where like when the girls like just and the outside just popping in every once in a while like oh wait knife chow that's her name when it's like after they break up and she's like no that bitch she dye her hair red and black because she's like I want to look like him or look like somebody he'll love and that's him yeah she has to go through the dark side you know glow up if that's something that we get to at one point. But yeah these two great setup for what we're about to get um because the tension was really high especially when they were like obviously the trailers they kind of let you know like they they are going to come through but I if they didn't show you like the unfortunately like I said the marketing kind of ruined it for me but like if they they didn't show like the Imperials were gonna be showing up in this ep in the show at all whatsoever I would have been like oh shoot like are they actually gonna call the the Imperials like because it seemed like everybody on the planet on Jan X they did not want anybody to get Imperials involved whatsoever right like they just wanted to kind of handle everything on their own that's why you know even though the cop the leader was like um the captain was like no we're we're gonna have to call them or whatever but like she was still giving them chances I was like that's you know that's kind of fucking scary like there's people that actually know how they act and they're just like we rather just keep them all the way away I think that would have made for like a great build up if they didn't show that in the trailers right right which I mean is great because I mean it's cool to know that we know what they're like we know they're all assholes but for in universe to also think that we should just try and keep our distance from them and we'll be straight.
SPEAKER_03You know what I mean? Then it's cool. So I kind of enjoyed that too treating them as like a like they're like like you know the FBI where they'll just show up set up shop and take over cases you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Ba yeah basically exactly I feel like Andor kind of set up that premise in a way when they were like you know when they had like the council of like all the the heads and they were like discussing where they're gonna be attacking what they're gonna want to occupy and what's gonna be valuable and all that I was like okay so this is basically like the planets are like states and like basically the empire is basically like the government and they're just trying to keep the government out.
SPEAKER_03Right. Yeah like why we don't need any like DEA motherfuckers here because then and DEA motherfuckers in that universe are inquisitors you don't want them at the door you don't want them at the door hell no because these motherfuckers are scary I mean I know that leads into you know episodes um five and six so we might as well start but we get introduced to the inquisitors I don't know which ones I don't know them like that I just know we've seen them before um um but let me read the titles real quick chapter five inquisition and chapter six knight of the hunted go ahead Josh right again they flow they all go back and forth one one to one so I don't know the inquisitors you know names I know there's like 11 of them some shit like that uh one's Merrick the one with the the mask the mask the one that looks like snake the 11th brother is the other one okay we've seen them before we know the how we know they also get dealt with well technically we don't know how Merrick gets dealt with Merrick was a witch ghost fart when we saw him in Ahsoka so so we don't technically know what happens to Merrick we know what happens to the 11th he can speak he speaks in this one he actually doesn't shut the fuck up no somebody makes them I have a feeling it might be more in one of these episodes so right so we get them they're they're basically handling the investigation the cops are no longer on the case the Empire's here they're taking control they're shutting shit down they take away our two boots they take away his boots fuck these guys oh yeah two boots that was fucked up I like that yeah they take away his two boots he's just like they're not regulation fuck this guy I was I really took the CJ I was like he's a fucking asshole why is everyone that worked for them an asshole I would have desk popped 100% have my boots to boom boom boom yeah so and then chapter six night of the hunted the heroes are on the run the Jedi and now Lawson are also are all on the run thanks to the Jedi so they gotta be rescued by them all the the that's kind of where we're at by episode six crazy shit.
SPEAKER_02Chapter five I feel like might have been my favorite episode I don't know we'll put discuss it a little bit down the road I want to make that a definitive answer but close mostly because I really like the whole interrogation thing I really like the whole they put him in a room with the inquisitors and I mean I wish we were in there with the motherfuckers it probably was it's probably like Batman like they throw him around they're like where are they you know what I'm saying uh but they're just like that's too silly we can't show them that right but um I wonder what happens I mean we kind of got a little glimpse of that with like what happens with Kylo Ren and all that stuff and I think it's the last Jedi right when they take her to the room or last Jedi we saw we saw the Jedi trying to do it to that Geo Notion uh or not that Geo Notion that one criminal where they were all three of them were getting up on it. Yeah um so I mean they you know that you kind of know what basically happens and it's kind of fucking scary especially like uh later on in the episodes when the 11th brother gets a little bit of the action uh Merrick is kind of like a scary figure on in and itself so it's like are they gonna make it out like do they know even if they don't know enough like will they still not make it out those characters um so I really enjoyed that about episode five there was a lot of like tension there right I I think the tension gets real here and again you remember where these characters end up when it's all said and done but Star Wars is a real good way of being like hey forget that for a second look at this you know what I mean so it's great. I thought five and six were great I think this I think this whole first season's pretty good I don't know if I have a favorite episode just because I enjoy it so much but I mean you're right we're just gonna have to wait for I mean in chapter six was pretty cool too because I mean that's when he basically gets into it with Merrick and I mean you but on that train and stuff like that that was pretty cool um he mall and Merrick basically going at it gotta say plot armor activated especially in episode six because I feel like Merrick could have followed them if he did the flying lightsaber thing do they not do that no more something they're trying to retcon?
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Because there's a couple times where I was just like if they would have just done the flying lightsaber thing they'd be right there back with them. Like they would basically you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_03Unless they're uh again unless they're just trying to retcon it and in which case I mean maybe you know what I mean because I thought so too I I that was I was waiting for that to happen and then CJ would have to be like when the fuck can they do that? And I I would have to had I would have laughed and then I would have paused it and explained it. Yeah. But the fact that we didn't see it and we kind of kept it serious I was like okay we're we're chilling then like Merek is gonna like by the end of the season like figure it out or something.
SPEAKER_02He's just gonna like be falling in the week the whole time?
unknownOh my god what's going on?
SPEAKER_02Like he just looks up. I don't know I I was just like man like I feel like in episode six that it would have lasted a little bit longer if they would have if they would have had the little flying thing still happening but they didn't so it is what it is. But I still I enjoyed both those episodes. I I mean the action in these episodes are like amazing. It's gonna come down to another question by the end of the by the end of the by the end of these episodes but I'm gonna let it ride for a little bit.
SPEAKER_03So chapter six night or chapter seven call to the oblivion and chapter eight the creeping fear with the inquisitors momentarily off their ass which is Merrick at the moment right right Merrick with them clearly off their ass they take a moment to breathe regroup themselves find out that hey we really gotta get going off this planet with the Empire here the Jedi thinking the same thing um Lawrence is thinking the same thing Maul and his crew are thinking the same thing along with tensions rising that they're not getting paid. So I was expecting a double cross but it didn't really happen but they're trying uh that's what episode seven relieves to we get kind of calm stuff again we got a little bit more interrogation scenes I think and then chapter uh there's a big fight at the end of this one which leads to chapter eight like you said the creeping fear it leaves Maul a bit damaged the group separated and this is where we get the little bit of flashbacks from Maul.
SPEAKER_02Yeah and that's kind of where we end up um so yeah Call to the Oblivion was cool I I like that they're still like questioning them but still following them at the same time that's hilarious. Uh is I feel like I had something when I watched this episode I was gonna ask you so when I think about it I'll circle back. But um I really enjoyed this episode too I didn't have an issue with it but I really feel like a lot from episode five on you really don't get a chance to breathe everything's just mostly like action packed and you're basically running away um so you don't really get a sit with much I don't feel even in episode eight when you get to the point of you know because I feel like episode seven is just basically them on the run until they get caught up again.
SPEAKER_03Um I feel like we I mean don't fight scene the fact that Maul and them were Maul and the Jedi working so well together to fight the Inquisitors off was a great great little fight scene. I thought that show was amazing.
SPEAKER_02But in episode eight I like that we got the little in-depth thing or a little behind the scenes of like what happened to Maul and when Sidious I got him it was like a flashback cut type deal. I like I said those are the moments that I was kind of hoping we're gonna get more of um so the fact that they gave us a glimpse but then just immediately pivoted from that kind of irritated me just a little bit just a little bit. I enjoyed the episode I episode eight is like the longest episode for whatever reason um maybe because they added a little bit more in-depthness when it came down to like what was happening with Maul. But yeah uh like I said they're basically on the run Maul's trying to like get back get back on his feet and then they basically figure out hey we need to get the hell out of here and we're not gonna be able to do it on our own. You know basically what happened in in season seven he was like I gotta get the fuck out of here but I can't do it by myself and that's basically where we're at. It just sucks when we get to a point where it's like okay it's all action and we're gonna have to retread the same thing. In this season I do think they sow certain seeds that we can really explore in season two but I was really hoping we're gonna explore it a little bit more in depth in this one because after that like I said it's just kind of like boom boom boom the 20 minute episodes and then next thing you know we get to episode nine and ten. Nine is strange allies and ten is the dark lord oh yeah I enjoy them I think again fluidity between these two hand in hand.
SPEAKER_03But now we're here.
SPEAKER_02Well that's what I'm saying it just feels like they made 40 minute episodes and split them apart like everything just feels like they split everything apart. Even like episode nine to ten was literally like a cliffhanger that was started up right at the beginning. It wasn't even like oh they're on our ass we're gonna have to deal with them later no it's like it happens right back to back.
SPEAKER_03But yeah I I digress go ahead episode nine episode nine our heroes are still on the run they call for some help a familiar face although not voiced by the same guy they call the dude from solo which is where we were left off Dylan Dylan whatever the fuck his name was we get him they're like hey come pick us up we'll meet you outside the outskirts of the city you know there's a price to be had if you save our asses right now and so he's like alright cool we'll go their way mall and the everyone else is still trying to escape we're still trying to get them off planet which leads which leads them to episode 10 where we get them still on the run trying to escape but now not with just the inquisitors on their ass we had a big reveal here I don't know I mean it's all over promotion it's all over the stuff so Vader shows up okay and he ain't fucking around that basically it um yeah I'm trying to remember what his name was to it Paul Bent Bent Bentanini played him in solo right? Paul Bettney Bettney Bettney Yeah his name was like Devon or something like that.
SPEAKER_02Dryden Voss so Voss yeah that I I knew it was like I was trying to think of like the water because it reminded me of the water and I was like what is it?
SPEAKER_03Voss water?
SPEAKER_02Yeah um so they called him Voss uh it was cool to see him back in animated form last time we seen him was like a cli quick hologram in season seven but I mean it was cool to see him in solo as well so I mean it was nice to see him like back. Hopefully we get to see him in live action again at one point. Um said episode nine to ten it it works really well I liked I feel like I enjoyed episode seven fight scene that kind of ended with like Maul having some kind of like recollection. This one was more like the fans demand this so they need to have this kind of thing. Like I feel like this could have been built up to like Maul like doing so much shit and you know put onto his radar not I don't feel like you just send Vader just to like send him you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03I feel like they just two inquisitors were giving him the business. It wasn't like they he was beating the ass to where they had a run to him you know what I mean? They could have still done it. I think if we would have seen him go up against all the inquisitors and then be like go call him you know what I mean? You know just 'cause you know just because Darth Moore gets that kind of cockiness. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Yeah give him a few inquisitors to destroy before you like you call the big gun in there because it's like okay now he's not really not fucking dying but like I know because I was expecting Palpatine.
SPEAKER_03I'm not gonna Like?
SPEAKER_02I mean I know he we won he's that'd probably be end game little like later on down the road. I feel like that's gonna be like a theory for like season two and all that stuff, or maybe like for season three, but yeah. I mean if they blow their load with Vader on the first season, I mean I feel like they might blow it on the second season.
SPEAKER_03Right. He was a looming force, you know what I mean? He doesn't really do appearances now anymore, but that's where that's where my brain goes. Like, ah shit, I left you alive, and now you're causing me trouble. You're gonna have to go. You know what I mean? Yeah. So the fact that we got Vader, and I mean he didn't really say anything. Which I mean, he's a force, he's not supposed to be talking, but at the same time, Maul being as scared as he was, and like still being like, What the fuck are you? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because he recognized he wasn't an Inquisitor, which is cool. I wonder how like that happens. I wonder if it's like a Sith card or something where it's like, oh wow, he's premium. He's a premium package, holy shit.
SPEAKER_03You you sir are Darth. I I know that shit.
SPEAKER_02Like you're you're above these ones. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_03Um it's hard to remember, or no, it's hard to forget that we know these things and the characters in the show don't know shit, and they have to discover that on their own. But like, imagine that shit. Vader at this point is still very much a hidden figure, you know what I mean? He's he's the he's like messing in affairs at way above his way below his pay grade, you know what I mean? So it it's for him, it's just an inconvenience, you know?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And I would assume uh another person with a red lightsaber running around that's not you know, an inquisitor. I would assume Vader would immediately go to like I mean, that's something that I feel like was left to be desired was like the interaction afterwards, like what are they gonna do about this thing? Like, maybe we'll see that in season two, but for me, it like we weren't getting anything out of Maul besides oh, he wants her to be like the apprentice. Like, I'm trying to figure out what's his motivation behind all this stuff. Like, I mean In episode eight, they try to make it be like, oh well, I'm trying to go get my revenge on Palpatine. Like now my like my hatred's gonna keep me alive to automatically go for him. But he went back for Kenobi as well, and he never even finished his mission to get him. He knew that, you know, it's like I said, spoilers for rebels, or like you said, spoilers for rebels, but like we know that Luke is supposed to be that and that's why he sacrificed himself for that moment or whatever, blah blah blah, and yada yada yada. Like it was a beautiful moment, not trying to like downplay it, but like we already know that was his motivation since basically season seven. So why are we still re- kind of rehashing it in the middle of or like giving us a reminder because I didn't feel like they spent a whole episode on it, they kind of just reminded you in a quick little like couple glimpses with like obviously adopting him and all that stuff. I was just hoping for a little bit more. We just did not get any like if we're gonna kind of start like getting to that point, like I just feel like we didn't get a lot of substance. We got a lot of action, we got a lot of cool action. I appreciate the action. Thank you. I appreciate it. It was nice, but I feel like we had a solid story in the beginning that just led to an on-the-run chase every single episode, and I don't think that we have enough time in 20 minutes to do a you know, it's just them running, like I said, five through ten was them basically running every single episode. They stopped run, fight, run, fight. Oh, grapple with like, do I want to be on the dark side or not, or follow Maul? Like, oh, do we trust them or not? And blah blah blah. Like we understand we we've kind of went through that before. Like it's happened. Maul is that deceptive guy. We've seen it happen with Ezra Miller with in Rebels. Like, it's not a it's not a new concept. So I was hoping in this one we're gonna get a little bit more in depth filled. What we got, was it cool? Yes. Was I hoping for a little bit more? Yes.
SPEAKER_03Right. I think that's that was me too. I wanted to see more flashbacks. I mean, we know his story, we know well, we know everything post his death, essentially. We don't know anything previous before, you know, the Phantom Menace.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. We don't know what built him up, all that stuff.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I want to know what prom what Palpatine promised him. You know what I mean? When he was like, You're gonna be my guy, I'm the Sith, we're gonna rule the galaxy, and then I mean, uh fortunately sends him to what is basically his death. And then like, I want to see him get picked up. We know he ends up with spider legs, we know he survives, we know his hatred keeps him alive. But who picked him up? Who sold them together, you know what I mean? Who did that to him? That's what I want to know.
SPEAKER_02That is true.
SPEAKER_03Like did Palpatine, maybe Palpatine did that, you know what I mean? Where he's like, Oh shit, you're still alive? I mean, aye, we could probably fix you up, you know, and then and then you know, keep him alive in the cut, yeah, just for him to and like all that stuff, but I mean that's the thing I wanna that's the thing I want to see. And then he kind of misremembered S Savage, you know what I mean? Like, is that his brain trying to console him and cope in in a way? What do you mean he misremembered him? Like, it seemed like he remembered him unless they're basically saying that he always had Savage as a brother. Yeah, that was his that was the thing.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah? Yeah, even in the Clone Wars, the Night Sisters, they were like that that was his brother. Like that was his actual like biological brother.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. I thought they were painting it as like he's for kind of forgetting stuff. Yeah. Or misremembering.
SPEAKER_02If anything, it just kind of makes the Clone Wars episode a little weird because it's like, okay, if you knew that that was him all along, but I think they were just trying to test them throughout the bunch, and like him was supposed to come out on top on his own kind of thing.
SPEAKER_03So Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But I don't think you could pack all that in a 20-minute episode for children, so they're just like, We're not gonna we're not gonna bother. They get the gist.
SPEAKER_03But uh But I would enjoy seeing those kinds of things. Because I mean we know he right now Obi-Wan's on the back burner. He knows he's a hermit, you know, he knows he's he's probably dead. He probably assumed he was dead. Um, until Ezra Miller basically pointed him in that direction, right? Or not Ezra Miller, Ezra Bridger, sorry. Yeah, uh, I said Miller too, uh Bridger, yeah. Bridger. And so he's like, oh shit, he's still alive? I gotta go handle that. But he has ambitions right now, the same kind of ambitions that always gets him into trouble. I.e., you know, the fucking the Vader fight scene and all that stuff.
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean I understand like his want for power, so that's why I was like, I thought he kind of understood like Palpatine's unbeatable. So let me just make my own little corner and kind of survive there, and then if I run into Kenobi, like he'll catch the fade. But for the most part, I'm gonna just do what I can to survive. So I thought it was gonna be more of that, along with you know, him kind of like grappling like why he kind of got to that position. And it wasn't that, it was just more like another, oh, he needs to train this pada one because he really needs her help, and I'm like, well, okay, we've done that already. Uh one of them refused. This one seems to be, you know, by the end of the season, it seems to be going along with them a little bit more. But I mean, I guess the only like exciting part about this is that we I hope that we get the Darth Talon reveal or something at one point, but other than that, it's kind of like the same the same formula dressed up differently. And I'm okay with it for like the cool stuff, but I I want my character to have a little bit more, you know. This is my favorite character, so for me to talk about it like this, I want it a little bit more. That's just the best way to put it. Like, I just wanted that you know, why is he so feared? First of all, like I understand he like why does he have those moments of fear but be so like haunting to other people? You know what I'm saying? Like that there's a real opportunity to kind of like explore that. And I I mean maybe in a kid's show you can't do it, but I feel like people who've been watching the Clone Wars and we're here in 2026, like we're I we're at that point. We could we can you know I think grown-ups are watching this at this point. I don't think it's just children, so I think we can we can do a little bit more in my opinion. I don't know. Right. Maybe I like I said, Clone Wars is still undefeated though. Like the Clone Wars animation is undefeated, the hand drawing, the action scenes were great. Um, I can't wait till like when people start like breaking down in slow motion, and you can see like the little cool hand gestures, because you could see them in a flash, but like there's a lot of like cool moments that I'm just like I wanna I want that slowed down a little bit for me. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, um, but like I said, a lot of cool, cool moments. I'm gonna just start wrapping it up here, Josh. Uh, a lot of cool moments. I'm gonna give it my rating from one being the worst, ten being the best, five being in the middle. Season one from all was great, high regards, just wanted a little bit more substance. The animation was top tier. I I love the the the these scenes right here, exactly this, like the little rain scenes and like the background just looking like a nice painted picture, but like the front of it is like a lot of moving parts, and then like you even have like at the characters reacting to stuff like in the Clone Wars, like they would make it minimum people on on screen, but now like you can see like the characters reacting to like stormtroopers hitting the ground and shit like that. It's su it's funny, it's funny to see like these little things. So, like it's fun to see them having fun with like they're at a part in a moment in time where like they've nailed it, they can have fun with it, do all kinds of crazy stuff, probably figured out how to do it for cheap with like you know the hand-painted drawings and stuff, which is fucking amazing. It's great integration. I give the first season of Maul a nine. A nine. I get is it's pretty good uh for what we get. I I love the action scenes, I love the the little moments of like you know, does Maul want to be the bad guy that he's supposed to be, or does he actually want to do a little bit more than that? Um I'm a little confused on why he chooses to do a little bit more than that and not always just go for his selfish needs like he's supposed to. Again, if we can explore that in a little bit of background stuff, like why he still has like a soft spot for like certain things, that'd be nice. Um, but other than that, yeah, nine out of ten. Josh, where do you where do you kind of where does this uh season of Maul kind of land for your scale, sir?
SPEAKER_03I think I'm with you. I think I did need a little bit more depth, and I did enjoy the depth we did get. But I I hope now that I mean he lo he lost a lot of stuff he lost a lot of people. He lost a lot of you know, yeah, granted, they were gonna betray him. Or I mean they did betray him before, you know, going the way out going out the way they did.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03But now he's his crew's kind of small, and although he has uh the empires that he's looking for, the the crews, the the drug lords and all that stuff, he still has a small clique. So I wonder how that's gonna feel to him. How is he gonna train somebody when the last person that trained him kind of did him dirty, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and he's lost everybody else that's basically been riding with him at till that point.
SPEAKER_03Right. So I can't I can't wait to see that stuff. I can't wait. I enjoyed everything else though. I enjoyed like the fight scenes, you're right, like the voice acting, the storytelling, the characters. I enjoyed the I can't wait for another season two. I I'm with you. I think I'm giving it a night action.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02I I gave I I will kind of lock in that episode five was probably like my favorite episode. Do you have a favorite episode?
SPEAKER_03Um, I think if I had to pick, if I had to pick, I want to give it to I liked episode eight, but there wasn't enough, you know, of what I was looking for there. Mm-hmm. I'd probably give it to four. Four or three. Just because I like the way he's talking to like Devin and stuff. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Oh, when he was like trying to like convince her to come through and all that stuff. He's like, come through the sa the Sith side. Come on. Come on. We got we got got Kool-Aid and all the good stuff we'll be getting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, right. We're we're big chillin' on this side. We got cookies, you know what I mean.
SPEAKER_02Best fight scene. I mean, don't tell me you're gonna glaze the Darth Vader scene and all that stuff. Like, it was nice. I like it. It was nice.
SPEAKER_03When the when the Jedi and Maul are fighting the Inquisitors and like, you know, with the droid and stuff, I almost cried. I was like, the droid, his droid, what the fuck? Oh, yeah, that was pretty sad. But like that whole fight scene where the the stakes were basically like to get to the other side. I like that whole fight scene.
SPEAKER_02I gotta say that okay. Alright. We're see, this is why we're the film bros. This is bro, we're bros. I that's exactly the one I was gonna say. I really enjoyed it. Um I really like that he kind of like did the dual lightsaber thing, a little, a little bit of star killer in Darth Maul, if you know what I'm saying, you know.
SPEAKER_03Dude, when I seen that, I was like, I was like the meme. I was like, whoa, like I had a fucking.
SPEAKER_02I was like, Sam Whitmer, you sly dog. You just just tell him to give you Star Killer already. Like just fucking just tell him that who cares if he's LP. You know what I'm saying? Um give it to us. Right, at this point. Just give us something. I love that storyline 100%. Um, but I do think like that that's probably like the best fighting scene. Um, unfortunately, we didn't get like an emotional scene that in my opinion that was like super deep, that was like, oh my god, like it's really like it's really hurting him, you know what I mean? And I I guess the best one I can think of is like the Order 66 scene and season seven and all that stuff. Like, that was pretty hard-hitting. Maybe this is just season one and we gotta build up to a moment like that. Oh, you know what?
SPEAKER_03That the the droid dying was pretty sad, but I I don't think it was like the droid dying was sad, the dude losing his brother was pretty sad. The that the other Death Mirian guy. Oh, yeah, both of them.
SPEAKER_02It was crazy when the other because like when he just turned around and he looked and he was like gone, I was just like, oh wow.
SPEAKER_03Like he just Yeah, and then when he was like, Oh fuck, I'm going down anyway, I'm gonna take y'all with me, and then he went down. I was like, Oh my, what a gangster. That foot was gangster. Tanked a few bullets.
SPEAKER_02They he was like on one knee, and they he was like on one knee and they were just like juju juo juo juo.
SPEAKER_03I was like, oh my god, like he take he was tanking bullets, he he managed to take them down with the with the little blades that he had. Yeah, no, I thought that foot was fucking cool. One of my favorite things was um nice little attention to detail, but the fact that they kept going for his legs and that kept pissing him off. I really enjoyed that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because they knew that was like his weak spot. I I appreciated that too. I also did enjoy the little introductions of like, you know, the Fallen Order games with like the whole uh ghost sense and all that stuff that was within the forced echo.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02That was pretty that was pretty neat too. Um, so I mean it seems like they got it on lock when it comes down to like Star Wars lore and like the animation and everything. Like Star Wars is on lock when it comes down to like the Clone Wars and animated side. It's the live action side that's having trouble, and we gotta figure out why. Like we gotta get to the bottom of that at one point. But at that's for another episode for another day. Let us know what you guys think though. Check out the Maul series out right now. I don't know if it's renewed just yet for a second season or like officially. Apparently there's rumors. Is it? No. Yeah. I don't want to give them false information. No? When did they announce it? Like right after right before it came it was gonna air. Oh yep, season two. It will premiere April 6th. What? No, never mind. That's season one. But season two is is is confirmed. So we are getting a season two. So hopefully we get a little bit better stuff with that too. Let us know what you guys hope to see in season two as well. Now that we are actually confirmed to be having I'm excited for that. I was actually waiting for a confirmation. I'm happy that you you brought that to my attention.
SPEAKER_03Um I told you I told I brought it up to you way before the show was coming out. They they managed to green light it before that shit even hit the airwaves.
SPEAKER_02Oh, so people already knew. They already knew. I just didn't know. Oh my gosh. I thought we were just in season one still. It's okay. We're getting a season two, and I'm excited for that.
