And welcome back to another episode of the Film Bros Podcast. Alright, Josh. So it's time. It's the middle of the year. Uh you already probably had your 4th of July barbecues, okay? You had your hot dogs and your burgers, right? And while you were doing that, while you were scarfing them down, watching fireworks pop in the air, probably popping your own. Not popping other things, but popping fireworks. Maybe got a ticket. Maybe got a ticket if you wound up getting caught. And while you were over there arrested in jail, you were contemplating, hmm, I wonder what my list for 2026 is. At least the midway mark for our best movies that we've seen so far. And let me just tell you something, Josh. I'm gonna have to tell you something. 2026 has not been my year for movies. Unfortunately, on my side, uh, I want to hear your side in a second, but for me at least, it's not been a hundred percent. I've been here, I've been there, but I've just not been on top of it like you have. I know you've been on top of your movies. Hopefully, my end of the year one will look a lot better, but this one for sure is not my strongest year so far. So, I mean, so for me, I got about all together 16 in total movies that I've seen so far this year. You probably got way double that at this point, I'm pretty sure. And that's just fucking amazing, and I'm happy for you. I'm just saying mine's is not as beefy as yours, I'm pretty sure.

I think but you know how much that brings to my heart. This is the first year that I can honestly say that I feel like you've actually done the part where I basically been doing where you watch every single thing that's been coming out, whether you love it, whether you hate it. Um obviously you're not a fucking uh you have you know you have a limited time in the day, so you're not gonna be able to get every single thing. But for the most part, I'm really uh as your film bro here, I'm really proud of the progress that you made this year. It's really showing off, and it's really it's amazing. So I'm hoping that I hear some good things on your list, and I'm hoping by the end of the year you have if if if we're not neck and neck, you got you got me beat for a second year in the row.

Fingers crossed. Uh, but Josh, how are we feeling about 2026? Okay, obviously we've seen a few movies, you've seen a lot more than me. How do we feel about 2026 compared to 2025? Are we rocking better? Are we kind of sitting in the middle? Is there a lot of misses that you've been sitting through? Tell us.

I think we're I think we're doing pretty good. I think movie theater-wise, movie movie theater movies that I've seen, I think we're doing pretty good. Um, maybe a little bit better than 2025. I know 2025, they were like the year because you know we don't have to deal with COVID and all that stuff anymore. We're well into it. I think we're getting some bangers this year. I do think um some of some of some of them are kind of whack. Maybe you know that that comes with it. You know, one in every five is probably gonna be whack. You know what I mean?

Yes, yes, of course. Every year you're gonna have what? The goats, the universally loved, and then you're gonna have the maybe in the middle, a little bit misconstrued, and then you're gonna have those bottom of the barrel. What the fuck? Who gave you a budget? Who gave you a camera? Who said to start rolling? You know what I mean? Um, we're gonna talk about that in our next episode that we're gonna be recording here um pretty soon. Basically reflecting our worst movies, and we don't do top 10 when it comes to them, we do top five. We do top five. We cannot bear to just sit there, and then we also have you know our little punching bags on the side that we like to just you know hit it with a little drive-by once in a while, right? Uh, but first things first, we always like to knock out our mid-year, our best Josh's top ten, my top ten, because like we said, you guys we we for sure do not have the time to watch every single movie. We know your time is very much valuable to you. So hopefully this gives you a reflection, a little bit of an insight of what's good, what's bad, and hopefully you give it a try and it does not waste your time. Um, and that's uh basically the goal of this kind of episode. But with that being said, Josh, I want you to kick us off. What's your number 10? We'll go from 10 to 10. Obviously, these are still good movies, but they're just not as good as I would say maybe top five, top three, number one. Right. So we'll start with number 10. Go ahead.

All right. It's gonna sound a little crazy, and it's not that it's a good movie, it just was a good laugh. Oh my god, it's a scary movie, scary movie six. Stop saying Supergirl, and that shit ain't gonna appear in it.

Scary movie six, um, or scary movie, however we're calling it. Not like I said, not the best movie. It's not like I'm praising it because it's it's cinema and the acting and all that stuff. It was just funny. I just thought it was a good laugh. I really enjoyed it. That thing had me rolling from start to finish. I really think it was a good, like, while I don't think it's a good film, it is definitely a movie. You know what I mean? Like, that's kind of how I feel about it.

I I would like to say, I think every scary movie's like that, right? I mean, when you say scary movie, I believe you're not going in there to watch, you know, Interstellar. You're not going in there to watch, you know, Man of Steel, you're not going in there to watch, you know, uh 1917, you're not watching pure sit cinematic gold, but that shit's gonna keep you laughing for sure. And I'm pretty sure. And I'm happy to hear that because that's one of the movies that I gotta actually watch. And the fact that I know, wait, did they shy away from any of the old stuff that they used to be known for, like that crude humor? Are we back? Are we back in 2026 like we were in the early 2000s?

Okay, because I we are grindlighting a few movies off the back of this one. Um what we got that 24 Jump Street that's supposed to come out, possibly a hot checks too, possibly another scary movie. If this one really oh well, it really made its money back. It's just basically sitting there still making money at the movie theaters, but it's it's doing what it needs to do. So hopefully that that era of raunchy comedy and you know, people not being so offended is gonna be back and we'll finally move forward. But scary movie is one of those that I gotta watch. Hopefully, you guys watch it too. But that's a good pick. A good pick. My number 10, Josh. It's a Netflix film, not not your cup of tea, probably not the best thing that you've seen in your life, but it's called Swap. Now, if you're wondering what is swap, well, just think about if you know Netflix stole an idea like Moana and then just made him into Birds. That's basically what basically happens. And it's you know, it works, it works. Michael B. Jordan's in this one. Um, he he voiced it, and they really loved to kind of promote him when uh when he won his Oscar, and basically they were like, Oh, Oscar winning, Michael B. Jordan, right? So they basically had him there. Tracy Morgan was there, uh Juno Temple. It was a it was a good movie. I really enjoyed it. I watched it with the kids, and I real I was just actually like, okay, Netflix can do animation. I haven't seen anything bad when it comes down to like Netflix animation, but with their movies, not so much. Maybe you have to take care of your animation a little bit more because it got to go through steps and movies, not so much. I don't know. Maybe there's a difference there. Have you seen swapped?

I have not. I think I've seen clips of it, I think, like you know, here and there, but I've never I never would have pegged this one on there, but that's pretty good. You know what I mean? I can't I can't be one of those people that like animation fucking like you know what I mean. No, yeah. I think this is a solid, this could be a solid pick.

If I give praises to any Netflix thing, even you know, even them picking up like a Sony movie, like you know, uh what is it, the K-pop demon hunters and all that stuff. That was a smart move on their end. I think one thing that streaming services do know how to do is obviously make something that's entertaining for children because it's like what do people say? They use some apps are used as babysitting stuff, so they you know they gotta keep it kind of entertained. And I feel like swapped was made not only for kids, but like if you're actually sitting with your family watching the movie, so it was pretty good, not too bad. Uh, but your number nine, Josh.

My number nine is The Iron Lung. We were talking about this one the other day a little bit. Um, this is a good movie. I do recommend it.

Yeah, yeah. Markiplayer. The his that's his movie. Um it take it takes place of with him in a submarine all around him, uh, is like a blood ocean with creatures trying to basically get inside all that stuff. I would say it's pretty solid. I do think uh Markiplayer needs a little bit more acting uh chops because I know it's hard to, you know, even like the best of actors struggle to just like show just emotion and bring out what they can while only by themselves. I mean, we watched that Willem Dafoe one, and even I think that one was like mad questionable, you know what I mean? It's a hard watch, but but it's solid, it's a solid movie. I do think it is it's this low simply because of the like I said, Marketplayer needs a little bit more acting chops. And two, if you're not paying attention, it you you're you're off the boat, you know what I mean? You're off the ride.

Okay, so not so decent enough. I I can kind of I want to kind of relate that to maybe like what we saw with the Philippore brothers, right? With um, what is it, the first one with the hand. Uh talk to me. It was cool, it wasn't too crazy, but it just did not stick the landing as it was supposed to, right? Um, you know, these YouTubers obviously they make YouTube things, so they're they're kind of used to that. So maybe this one kind of shows them that path to like something better uh onward into the future. I've heard about this one, I haven't seen it. I I'm assuming it's pretty decent. I was hearing that this one was kind of thrown in with um what was that other one that came out like last year? Uh with Stuck Stuckerman's horror movie, right? Like they is basically being compared to him, Chris Stuckerman.

Yeah, that one movie. I never watched the that one either, but you know, that's one of them that they're kind of uh kind of putting them side by side. Like I said, we're gonna be doing a video, we're gonna have to watch those movies, uh, because this a YouTuber turned movie uh filmmaker. Obviously, this has been something that we've been talking about, and they a lot of YouTubers, it's their dream. This is something that they want to do. So we're gonna be talking about that. We'll actually make a video, watch a lot of these movies just to you know get an idea of what from what they go through, how they jump from here to there, and basically see if they should be actually picking up the big camera. Am I right? Uh, but we'll have to wait and see when it comes to that one. But I'm excited to watch this one. Hopefully, uh when we get to that video, it's it's well worth our time. Uh, my number nine though, Josh, I have to I have to give it to Chris Pratt. And uh you're not gonna you're not gonna know why I picked this movie, but I gotta give it to Mercy. Um Chris Pratt, and then I look, let me tell you something. Let me tell you, let me tell you something. Let me tell you something. Okay, this movie for me was kind of reminiscent of like minority report, but like in the future with like AI. Obviously, minority report kind of tackles that, but this one kind of tackled it in a in a different way. Did it get a little convoluted towards the end? Yes. Did it was it a little over the top kind of? Was the acting not a hundred percent? No. Was it a good pop conflict though? I gotta say, yeah. I gotta say it was worth probably popping in again if I wanted to. If I feel like just sitting there and watching another movie and just being like, hey, I'm just gonna put this one on. Mercy was Mercy's kind of it. I don't really like Chris Pratt in that way. But I gotta say, Mercy kinda had me.

Only because especially because we've both seen what it is, and I'm pretty sure you saw better movies uh after this, and I've seen better movies after this too, but I will say I think this is one of those ones where like I think you've said well, you've said this plenty of times where you could just kind of shut your brain off and kind of watch it, and it it's kind of good, you know what I mean? So, and I kind of feel like that's what it was. I put it on, it kind of at first it was kind of like uh okay, do I take this seriously? And then once I just kind of sat back and let it happen, it wasn't that bad of a movie. It's just more of once you turn your brain on, you're like, mmm. Mmm. Pratt Prattinson, what are you doing? Am I right? Am I right? Yeah. Not on the list, I'm I take it, but that's okay. Yeah, no. That is okay. Josh, what is your number eight? Go ahead.

It was good. I really loved it. I think this movie is pretty fucking good. But I cannot ignore its flaws. You know what I mean? Like it, like it's flawed in the way that like it just doesn't take itself seriously. And I know that's like the charm of it, of like doing the whole universe and that stuff. But you put it up against real contenders, unfortunately, it's just gonna fall on its face. So I can like it for what it is, but I also have to acknowledge, like, hey, this movie's pretty fucking silly when you like think about it.

Yeah. Yeah. I would uh, you know, it kind of reminds me of Dungeons and Dragons. I know this movie has been kind of you know back to back with Dungeons and Dragons. They're kind of like, oh yeah, it's that kind of movie. Uh unfortunately, this movie did flop in the box office, so I don't think we're gonna be getting sequels unless uh there's rumors in the background saying that if it does really good on Prime, probably do better. This is one that I've been waiting to watch as well. Um I have to say, Josh, Joe, on a little side note, so far we're only on we're only on the third movie, and I already like your uh your diversity in your in your list already. So I just gotta keep giving you props because I really show I really seen the improvement of like your work ethic when it comes down to these films and everything. So and it shows within your list just off these first three. I'm really happy for or for this and for you, and I'm happy that you had fun with this movie because some people did not, but with according to the Rotten Tomatoes course, a lot more people had fun with it than those that did not. And I really feel like this is kind of like that Dungeons and Dragons movie where it was like, eh, people have fun, but once you think about it, you're like, uh Yeah. I wonder if the whole Jared Leto thing is the reason why I didn't make a lot of money.

Josh supports Jared Leto. I don't know what to say. I don't know. I don't know. I like I like it. I support Jared Leto too. It is what it is. Um, but yeah, I'm excited for this one. I'm gonna be watching that one. My number eight, Josh, is the bride. Uh Jake Gyllenhaal, uh not uh Jake Gyllenhaal is in this movie. Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, uh Jesse Buckley the Bride. This one, I gotta say, and this is it kind of sucks to say it because if I you know Masters of the Universe is kind of like that movie where like it's built to not be taken too seriously. The bride is one where you where it really wants you to take it seriously. And there's moments where I really do, and that's why I really gotta put it to the top. Like Maggie, Christian Bale, like I feel like they um they have really good chemistry the way that they like work on screen. Not Maggie, sorry, uh the lead actress, uh Jesse Buckley. They really have really good chemistry, like when him and her were on screen. Do I feel like they did a good job like they did with Barbie in the messaging of this movie? No, a little heavy-handed, but did I enjoy the performances a hundred percent? I really did. And I mean everybody's seen it in the trailer, but that whole jumping down the stairs thing to see something like that and see the whole body like actually just contort and everything like that is insane. Uh, but I do I do acknowledge that this movie does have flaws, but it for me personally, I can overlook them for the powerful acting that comes from with Christian Bale and uh the lead actress in this film. So I enjoyed it.

Um, like I said, little little you're gonna have to brace yourself a little bit because we're masters of the universe, you don't take it that seriously, and you know when you walk in you're not supposed to take it seriously. This one expects you to, and you know that they expect you to. So when certain scenes happen, you're just like, son of a bitch. Like, do you want me to laugh or not? You know what I'm saying? And that's just it's unfortunate sometimes, but I do enjoy the performances, and that's all I have to say. Josh, what is your number seven?

So I did like it, I enjoyed it. I I think they I think it's pretty solid action flick. I do think um if this were one of those like silent movies, you know what I mean, the ones that that are getting traction right now where like, oh, they're not saying a word and all that stuff, I think it probably would have hit better. Because I don't know if Zazie Beats is the kind of leading woman that she's trying to be. I I think I think I think I think it's good. I think the movie's pretty good. I just don't think I just think it's on her. I just think laying it all on her and knowing her chops and like what she's done. I don't know. I don't know if she gotta like that.

But what I'm saying is is that you could tell that she put some work in into this film. I feel like you're just not giving it its fair shake. I feel like even the ending, the the video game style ending that comes at the the very this is one that I can't I can't give it to you because we're on very two sides of different aisles here, sir. I can't believe it.

This one, I really enjoyed it. Um, did not enjoy it as much as the first one. Did get a little convoluted, had to ask a few questions towards the end, like you know. How the fuck does this whole leadership thing work? Like it just it just got a little too it got a little too crisscrossy for me there there at the end. But for the most part, I do enjoy uh where we left off. It I the fact that it started where we left off with the first one was kind of cool as well. Not a lot of movies do stuff like that. The fact that she had to do all this in the span of a week, right on to you, right on to you. Um, but like other than that, I mean performances, Samara Weaving can never go wrong. Catherine Newton has always been on the fence for me. She's always been one of those that I'm like, do I like her? Do I hate her? She's an At-Man, but then she's also in like, you know, that's what I'm saying. Like, she you just kind of forget her. And like, so I'm like, do I like her? I really enjoyed her in this one. I I feel like if she does more like this, where she lets go. Oh, I liked her in the Dylan Sprouse one, the one with the zombie, right? That's oh, yeah, okay, yeah. What was it called again? I forgot what it's called.

I liked her in that one, I liked her in Freaky. That one was cool too. So maybe she's better in like a Samara weaving role. Maybe like she needs to be a Scream Queen kind of thing. Like she needs to be one of those final girls, she needs to be in horror movies because she has like that energy where you know she's like boss as fuck, but like in this, like you know, in that way where like Courtney Cox or like you know, uh, what's her name? The the girl from Scream. I she used to have a high name, now it's all over the place. She plays Sydney, forgot her name.

Um, so I feel like yeah, if she stays in this lane, perfect. But I think that's what really makes this movie this let's just be honest, the story not so much. I really like Elijah Wood in this one as well. It's nice.

Oh, okay, cool. You know, you I think the you know, the boys will get a better kick out of it. You know what I mean? I think it's visually appealing. I think the story's fun and cute and all that stuff. I still don't know about Chris Prats Mario. Um, I think at most this movie probably has like a pacing issue, which like it goes by everything really fast just so we can get to like the oh hey, I know that from the game, I know this from the game, and then you know the third act um also kind of goes by pretty quickly. I mean I would say this movie could have stretched itself out a little bit, but I know it's a kids' movie, and I know I can't be too hard, but that's kind of where my issues lie. But I do think it's pretty fucking solid and deserves the praise.

Yeah, I'm that's what I'm kind of afraid of. That uh that's what I was kind of like getting when I was hearing like what people were saying, because that it didn't seem like they were really putting it in the right way. I think pacing is one of the things that they were saying, but like it sounds like they try to put adapt a bunch of video games into one movie, and I mean if you even look right here, it's only an hour and 38 minutes of a movie and cut off like 10 minutes because of credits and whatnot, so it's probably like an hour and 28 move uh an hour and 28 minutes. So it's like either you're trying to get lore heavy with this like expanded world with Mario, so you gotta give it a little bit more chunk time, but then that's gonna cost you the kids because it's like okay, well, kids cannot sit through a two-hour movie, they could barely sit through an hour and a half movie, you know what I'm saying? So you could tell that they're trying to please the older audiences that are fans of Mario, but also trying to keep it to like where kids are at. And I'm like, uh, I don't think you can have it both with this once, you know what I mean? Right. I feel like you have to pick your lane and just kind of ride with that shit.

Yeah, this movie does a lot. I mean, it has Yoshi in it, it has Rosalina, it has a fucking like um it gives you Star Fox, which I mean he's cool, but there's really no reason for him to be here outside of like he saves Mario's ass, like right at the end of the movie, basically. They do baby Mario stuff for like a second, I'm telling you, like like literally like one or two seconds, and then it goes back to the regular Mario shenanigans. I I just think it could have really used another I don't know, 30 minutes. I don't know.

Yeah, I would have made it like two hours. But like I said, you can't have kids sit there for two hours. Well, you know, leave it for the older audiences to go to the box office, and then when the movie comes home, let the kids watch it there. I mean, at that point, that's where you can have your cake and eat it too. But it looks like they're they they want to do it a different way. But that's we're basically well, no, I'm at number six, right? So my number six before we round about to our top five, and that's where it's really gonna get juicy because I'm really interested to see what's there. And um, we're gonna we're debating if it's wrong, okay? Um, my number six is Mandalorian Angor Goo. I was really thinking whether or not this was gonna be smack in the middle, but it really just did not make that mark. For me personally, I enjoyed this movie because Star Wars. I love Star Wars, it is what it is. Is this movie perfect? Hell no. Is it super long? Hell yes. Two-hour movie for basically is what I would deem is a bunch of different Mando segments stitched up into one uh to make a movie, and then um let's just say it's not very much the best stitching either. Like it's possibly I feel like we probably got a better stitching with the Clone Wars movie when they just took episodes out of the animated show and just you know put it together for a movie. This one, you could tell that there was a bunch of hiccups, you could tell that there was a bunch of like let's kind of piece it together as quick as possible because we need to put this movie out there um to see if people are even interested in uh seeing Star Wars on the big screen again. And let's just be honest, uh if you're gonna build something to basically rush it out there, I I'm actually like I saw the Rotten Tomatoes score before we started recording, and I was like actually surprised it got to that point because I would have assumed that this movie would have been ripped to shreds and it it to be honest, it really should for like a movie in and itself, but it's Star Wars, and I feel like you know, seeing my kids watch it and they really lit up and like my second lit up, and he's really like intimate, like it's really shaping up what Darth Maul is to me, is hitting him for like what Mando Mando to him, what that is for me. So I'm just like, did this movie do something? Probably for the younger audiences. So I'm like, that's kind of makes me a little bit happy, but I'm just like, we gotta do a little bit better. But Star Wars has never been a perfect product. I've never seen a perfect Star Wars movie, is my problem, except for maybe The Last Jedi, but you guys ripped it to shreds, so maybe it's not perfect.

Certain lack of know how to follow through with said uh thread of thought, right? They go on to spectacle, which they're really good at, and I'm really happy that they're so freaking good at it because there were certain scenes I was just like, man, if I was in a movie theater watching this, I probably would have just been in super awe, it would have been amazing. But good thing I was watching it at home, so the wool wasn't over my eyes. It still was amazing, it still looked great. It just I knew for some reason it just did not obviously. I feel like in a theater, it would have probably distracted me a lot better. I like I was sitting there, I was like, man, this would have really distracted me if I was in a movie. And so but other than that, it was really it was really good scenes. I really loved everything about it. The movie was well made. Um, but I you could tell that there's certain things where they just could not uh finish up that thought, and they just were like, hey, you know, in this case it was sci-fi planets and things like that, but you know, in other cases it it could easily be a you know, oh look over here really quick. Um unfortunately it does get a little convoluted towards the end. Um I don't know how do you wrap up AI as quickly as you should. Um but I think I don't want to spoil it too much, but I think the way that he went about it towards the end, I think that that's something that you just you know, either you could really get along with it and be like, okay, yeah, that makes a little bit of sense, or you're just gonna be like, huh. That's a little it's a little too wacky for me. And I think that's where I kind of lied at. I was like, it's a little too wacky. Um I I don't really think the ending stuck itself as it was supposed to, but everything else that led up to it was really fun. I really enjoyed everything up until maybe like that little third act. And I mean, I can maybe think of my own ending, but for the most part, I really did enjoy this one for what it was.

When you hear Dave Franco, you're just like, wow, that's nice. Um, everything from top to bottom, the story was great, this was emotional. But for the most part, I think Disney's back. Pixar's kind of back with like their movies and stuff like that. Like the difference it makes is funny because they do it like in the background here and there, and you're just like you look at it, it's just little like cute moments like that that really make the movie worthwhile.
