Jobs dried up. Entire industries were changed almost"},{"startTime":54.88,"endTime":62.72,"body":"overnight. But as bad as it was, it wasn't all bad. For Dr. Ramadas, a promising and productive"},{"startTime":62.72,"endTime":76.88,"body":"career as a rock star academic got sidetracked when he was laid off from his job of several years in the midst of the lockdowns. So you grew up in Israel and made your way to the U.S."},{"startTime":224.5,"endTime":229.3,"body":"So I guess start at the beginning for you wherever that was, time and or place."},{"startTime":229.3,"endTime":233.5,"body":"Yes. I would like to start my story actually with a little imaging exercise."},{"startTime":233.5,"endTime":236.3,"body":"So I want to take you and the audience and just make you think,"},{"startTime":236.3,"endTime":240.0,"body":"go back to your early teenage lifehood, right?"},{"startTime":240.0,"endTime":243.12,"body":"And think about the person that make the most impact"},{"startTime":243.12,"endTime":247.16,"body":"of your life, the one that you care of all your basics needs."},{"startTime":247.16,"endTime":250.36,"body":"You know, the one that everything he say to you was worth,"},{"startTime":250.36,"endTime":252.24,"body":"you know, like the most important things."},{"startTime":252.24,"endTime":254.56,"body":"And you know that you can go to sleep"},{"startTime":254.56,"endTime":256.0,"body":"while he gonna take care of you."},{"startTime":256.0,"endTime":258.52,"body":"And I think about your life losing these persons"},{"startTime":258.52,"endTime":260.8,"body":"while you're teenagers, right?"},{"startTime":260.8,"endTime":262.84,"body":"You lost your leadership, you lost your guidance."},{"startTime":262.84,"endTime":264.6,"body":"I mean, you think that you're adults,"},{"startTime":264.6,"endTime":266.68,"body":"you act like adults because you start, you know,"},{"startTime":266.68,"endTime":269.44,"body":"dating girls, playing sports, thinking about"},{"startTime":269.44,"endTime":275.52,"body":"scholarships, but you're still a kid in some ways. You're not making incomes, you didn't"},{"startTime":275.52,"endTime":280.0,"body":"start college yet, you don't have a job. So think what would you do. So unfortunately,"},{"startTime":280.0,"endTime":285.36,"body":"this is what happened to me when I was 16 years old. And I went through depression. I literally"},{"startTime":285.36,"endTime":291.04,"body":"dropped everything on my calendar. I stopped going to school. I stopped practicing basketball."},{"startTime":291.04,"endTime":297.68,"body":"I started hanging out with the wrong people. I keep rejecting helps from families, from"},{"startTime":297.68,"endTime":303.8,"body":"friends, from consoles, from schools. And I went to a wrong path basically."},{"startTime":303.8,"endTime":307.24,"body":"But after a year I realized this is not for me."},{"startTime":307.24,"endTime":311.8,"body":"I don't want to be hanging out with these people. I don't want to end up without a career."},{"startTime":311.8,"endTime":317.44,"body":"So I reached out to my family and close friend that actually didn't give up on me. And again,"},{"startTime":317.44,"endTime":321.6,"body":"this is a good time to apologize again for all the troubles I did and all the friends"},{"startTime":321.6,"endTime":326.28,"body":"I missed along these years. But like I said before, I lost my guidance. I lost my leader."},{"startTime":326.28,"endTime":331.32,"body":"And I thought that nobody can replace this person that took care of me all my life. My"},{"startTime":331.32,"endTime":336.28,"body":"family and good friends and school councils, I mean, they recommend me to do everything"},{"startTime":336.28,"endTime":341.04,"body":"just to finish high school diploma basically and join the Israeli military."},{"startTime":341.04,"endTime":346.04,"body":"Now the Israeli military, as an Israeli you have to serve for three years. However, they"},{"startTime":346.04,"endTime":350.84,"body":"all recommend me to go with my family tradition and become a fighter and have a valuable service."},{"startTime":350.84,"endTime":355.96,"body":"And I have all the skills in the world not to become a fighter and do like a minor position"},{"startTime":355.96,"endTime":364.6,"body":"like a HR or a chef or something else basically. But I choose to become a fighter for one reason, because I want to have a fresh"},{"startTime":364.6,"endTime":369.88,"body":"start. Because I know that uniform is similar to the U.S. military. When you go to the military,"},{"startTime":369.88,"endTime":375.12,"body":"they all get equal opportunity. They all show up on Sunday morning. They all buzz your hair"},{"startTime":375.12,"endTime":380.68,"body":"on Sundays. We all look the same, get in the same shoes, same celery, same initial point,"},{"startTime":380.68,"endTime":389.44,"body":"starting points. And that's what I want. So military boot camp was very struggling, very tough, a lot of punishments which I was"},{"startTime":389.44,"endTime":391.32,"body":"obviously deserved, but it's put me straight in line."},{"startTime":391.32,"endTime":394.24,"body":"You know, it taught me a bunch of disciplines, but I was happy."},{"startTime":394.24,"endTime":397.24,"body":"I was happy that I was treating like everybody basically."},{"startTime":397.24,"endTime":399.64,"body":"And I had a fresh start to work with."},{"startTime":399.64,"endTime":402.52,"body":"So I served for three years. I was a fighter for two and a half years."},{"startTime":402.52,"endTime":406.72,"body":"And then since I was the biggest guy on the team, I was the guy that carried the automatic"},{"startTime":406.72,"endTime":411.72,"body":"machine with a bunch of training and jumping. And this is one of the classes I really enjoyed"},{"startTime":411.72,"endTime":412.52,"body":"during my PhDs."},{"startTime":412.52,"endTime":416.32,"body":"I like sports medicine injuries with you, Toby."},{"startTime":416.32,"endTime":419.64,"body":"So I actually suffered a couple of back injuries when I"},{"startTime":419.64,"endTime":423.16,"body":"was actually in rehabilitation facilities for over three"},{"startTime":423.16,"endTime":425.48,"body":"months, and I tried basically everything."},{"startTime":425.48,"endTime":429.12,"body":"Every hydrotherapy, every type of treatment, ice, colds,"},{"startTime":429.12,"endTime":431.04,"body":"everything besides surgery."},{"startTime":431.04,"endTime":437.0,"body":"I've tried a lot to go back to my friends in the battle, basically, but I wasn't qualified."},{"startTime":437.0,"endTime":441.0,"body":"Physically, I wasn't qualified, but I didn't want to give up on a meaningful service."},{"startTime":441.0,"endTime":444.0,"body":"So what's happened, I become a Krav Maga instructor."},{"startTime":444.0,"endTime":452.0,"body":"For those unfamiliar, Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art developed for the Israel Defense Forces, or IDF."},{"startTime":452.0,"endTime":457.0,"body":"It shares commonalities and techniques with Aikido, Judo, Karate, Boxing, and Wrestling."},{"startTime":457.0,"endTime":460.52,"body":"and wrestling. Through his experiences in the Israeli military,"},{"startTime":460.52,"endTime":464.52,"body":"Ram became proficient in the technique and actually began teaching the discipline"},{"startTime":464.52,"endTime":465.88,"body":"later in his service career."},{"startTime":465.88,"endTime":469.96,"body":"While he didn't know it at the time, its focus on real-world situations"},{"startTime":469.96,"endTime":473.12,"body":"and extreme efficiency would serve him well in the future"},{"startTime":473.12,"endTime":476.28,"body":"in academic and professional pursuits."},{"startTime":476.28,"endTime":481.4,"body":"I'm back in the game, I love what I want, I'm good at it basically."},{"startTime":481.4,"endTime":484.48,"body":"So then I decided to go and pursue my undergrad"},{"startTime":484.48,"endTime":489.96,"body":"degree, right? But what you can do when you have a very low GPA, right?"},{"startTime":489.96,"endTime":493.2,"body":"I barely, like I said, I barely finished high school diploma, right?"},{"startTime":493.2,"endTime":498.52,"body":"All the classes including English by the way, I barely passed English and now it's funny"},{"startTime":498.52,"endTime":504.76,"body":"because now I'm a professor at North America at New York and a writer basically."},{"startTime":504.76,"endTime":509.44,"body":"But he's a good example. So what you can do? So since I was a Krav Maga, I"},{"startTime":509.44,"endTime":515.16,"body":"was kind of used my connections and went to a sport medicines program in Israel concentrating"},{"startTime":515.16,"endTime":519.96,"body":"biomechanics in posture which actually become my specialties these days. So I started my"},{"startTime":519.96,"endTime":524.72,"body":"undergrad degrees, right? And one thing was very interesting. So as an Israeli soldier,"},{"startTime":524.72,"endTime":533.88,"body":"99% of the Israeli soldiers, after finishing the service, they're taking a year, a gap year basically. Because you know, you know how stressed the"},{"startTime":533.88,"endTime":538.4,"body":"situation can be, right? Showing up every week basically, Sunday morning, they buzz"},{"startTime":538.4,"endTime":542.56,"body":"your hair, you're doing the same thing. You know, I used to have 16-hour shifts, eight"},{"startTime":542.56,"endTime":547.36,"body":"hours off, in eight hours, you're four hours, you're cleaning, four hours you sleep basically"},{"startTime":547.36,"endTime":553.16,"body":"and then so and so on for like six, you know, 60 days rotation, nine days rotation. So usually"},{"startTime":553.16,"endTime":556.32,"body":"most of the Israeli soldier, they'll just take a gap year."},{"startTime":556.32,"endTime":561.34,"body":"They're going, usually go to South America, to India, going, just taking a break and then"},{"startTime":561.34,"endTime":563.92,"body":"regrouping together and then go and start studying undergrad."},{"startTime":563.92,"endTime":570.84,"body":"There's only 1% that actually not doing this gap year and I'm one of these 1%."},{"startTime":570.84,"endTime":575.88,"body":"Since I was feeling that I was missing this one year in high school basically, I think"},{"startTime":575.88,"endTime":579.64,"body":"this was the most impactful moment, event in my life."},{"startTime":579.64,"endTime":581.8,"body":"Because since then, and actually this is true"},{"startTime":581.8,"endTime":585.48,"body":"all of this today, I'm always feeling I'm behind."},{"startTime":585.48,"endTime":587.38,"body":"All right, and this is what I kind of felt"},{"startTime":587.38,"endTime":588.28,"body":"after I finished in the military."},{"startTime":588.28,"endTime":590.96,"body":"I said, okay, I'm back on my feet, I got my motivation,"},{"startTime":590.96,"endTime":592.74,"body":"I'm actually good at what I'm doing,"},{"startTime":592.74,"endTime":594.56,"body":"I'm a combat engineer license, right,"},{"startTime":594.56,"endTime":596.34,"body":"I know how to build, to break,"},{"startTime":596.34,"endTime":597.84,"body":"I'm also a Krav Maga instructor,"},{"startTime":597.84,"endTime":600.3,"body":"so I really know how to go to contact"},{"startTime":600.3,"endTime":604.32,"body":"and how to severely injure people or protect myself."},{"startTime":604.32,"endTime":606.92,"body":"And I have motivations because actually I'm good."},{"startTime":606.92,"endTime":608.8,"body":"I feel like, okay, I'm good at what I'm doing."},{"startTime":608.8,"endTime":612.6,"body":"If I do what I like, I'm really good at it."},{"startTime":612.6,"endTime":614.44,"body":"So I started this program basically"},{"startTime":614.44,"endTime":616.6,"body":"and I gave up on this gap here and I said,"},{"startTime":616.6,"endTime":618.16,"body":"you know, I just go straight."},{"startTime":618.16,"endTime":619.72,"body":"So literally I finished my service"},{"startTime":619.72,"endTime":623.56,"body":"and the next day I was in school with all my peers,"},{"startTime":623.56,"endTime":625.2,"body":"including all my good friends,"},{"startTime":625.2,"endTime":628.72,"body":"just come back with a long hair, you know, from Brazil, six months"},{"startTime":628.72,"endTime":633.48,"body":"in Brazil or Thailand or India for like eight months, they're all like happy and relaxed"},{"startTime":633.48,"endTime":636.44,"body":"and I'm like all ready to go."},{"startTime":636.44,"endTime":641.16,"body":"Which led me actually to be on the Dean list for the whole four years because I felt so"},{"startTime":641.16,"endTime":644.88,"body":"behind so I knew, you know, I'm going to give up on this because I need to catch up"},{"startTime":644.88,"endTime":648.68,"body":"on my, because I don't have a good GPA, high school diploma."},{"startTime":648.68,"endTime":651.2,"body":"Rom's acknowledgement here hits home with me."},{"startTime":651.2,"endTime":654.92,"body":"Some people call it FOMO, others simply motivation."},{"startTime":654.92,"endTime":659.64,"body":"But I relate to the sentiment that feeling behind, feeling othered, feeling somehow less"},{"startTime":659.64,"endTime":663.0,"body":"than is a double edged sword."},{"startTime":663.0,"endTime":668.52,"body":"On one hand it can be powerful fuel on our path towards success, but on the other it"},{"startTime":668.52,"endTime":673.24,"body":"can eat you alive with a sense of inadequacy and even shame."},{"startTime":673.24,"endTime":680.24,"body":"came. Rao managed to leverage it to success, but it can be a volatile mixture."},{"startTime":718.87,"endTime":724.87,"body":"So these four years, and then I figure out, okay, undergrad is kind of, I don't want to say easy, but it was kind of enjoyable, actually."},{"startTime":724.87,"endTime":731.87,"body":"What is next for me? So I met with professors, people like you, and I asked them, what do you recommend for me to do?"},{"startTime":731.87,"endTime":737.23,"body":"And it was actually offer a master program in this school that I went. However, the master program was in physical education."},{"startTime":737.23,"endTime":740.53,"body":"It's not exactly the sport medicines and the injuries."},{"startTime":740.53,"endTime":742.23,"body":"And you know, growing up as an athlete,"},{"startTime":742.23,"endTime":743.79,"body":"and a tactile athlete, basically,"},{"startTime":743.79,"endTime":746.37,"body":"I always was interested about these injuries,"},{"startTime":746.37,"endTime":748.09,"body":"how you treat it, how to prevent it,"},{"startTime":748.09,"endTime":750.47,"body":"how to help people not to suffer"},{"startTime":750.47,"endTime":751.77,"body":"from what I personally suffer from,"},{"startTime":751.77,"endTime":754.89,"body":"from slow back pain or any other injuries, basically."},{"startTime":754.89,"endTime":757.61,"body":"So actually, I started my master degree in Israel."},{"startTime":757.61,"endTime":762.39,"body":"And after the first week, I went back to the dean, knock on his door,"},{"startTime":762.39,"endTime":765.99,"body":"and I told him, hey, listen, this is not for me."},{"startTime":765.99,"endTime":768.1899999999999,"body":"I mean, I don't see myself as a master"},{"startTime":768.1899999999999,"endTime":770.55,"body":"at physical education, there's no PhD over here"},{"startTime":770.55,"endTime":773.35,"body":"right for me, so he told me one thing."},{"startTime":773.35,"endTime":776.67,"body":"He told me, if I was you, referring like,"},{"startTime":776.67,"endTime":779.47,"body":"not married at the time, no kids, basically,"},{"startTime":779.47,"endTime":782.07,"body":"I'll just take all my stuff and try to pursue"},{"startTime":782.07,"endTime":784.15,"body":"your career in North America."},{"startTime":784.15,"endTime":786.33,"body":"So I said, okay, I dropped the master degree"},{"startTime":786.33,"endTime":788.51,"body":"on the same day basically."},{"startTime":788.51,"endTime":791.75,"body":"And I started research, what I need to do"},{"startTime":791.75,"endTime":795.15,"body":"to start getting my master degree over there in America."},{"startTime":795.15,"endTime":798.15,"body":"So the one thing you need to do as a foreign student"},{"startTime":798.15,"endTime":800.37,"body":"is a SAT and GRE."},{"startTime":800.37,"endTime":803.91,"body":"And GRE is basically, if you're not familiar with this,"},{"startTime":803.91,"endTime":806.47,"body":"is basically a test, is a high level test."},{"startTime":806.47,"endTime":808.99,"body":"Usually the English that they teach you over there"},{"startTime":808.99,"endTime":810.95,"body":"is nothing related to what we're all talking"},{"startTime":810.95,"endTime":814.79,"body":"today. It's like high level literature in English basically. I mean, even today when"},{"startTime":814.79,"endTime":819.31,"body":"I publish a lot of papers, I'm barely using the vocabulary I learned in this GRE test."},{"startTime":819.31,"endTime":824.39,"body":"So how do you take a kid basically that fail, almost fail in English, right, because it"},{"startTime":824.39,"endTime":830.27,"body":"was, I literally miss a year in high school, which was an important year. And coming from"},{"startTime":830.27,"endTime":836.47,"body":"a foreign country that my first language is not English, basically, try to teach these persons to have"},{"startTime":836.47,"endTime":841.35,"body":"a PhD in literature, basically. So, you know, what you can do, you just go and you take"},{"startTime":841.35,"endTime":846.11,"body":"classes, right? You try to prepare like every game, right? We're both athletes or used to"},{"startTime":846.11,"endTime":850.47,"body":"be an athlete. You know how to prepare. You do whatever you can. You control whatever"},{"startTime":850.47,"endTime":859.63,"body":"you can control and you put some hard work and pray for the best results. I obviously applied for jobs. So the most common things in basic science"},{"startTime":2183.79,"endTime":2188.63,"body":"fields, you usually go for post-docs before you can be a professor. And this time is usually"},{"startTime":2188.63,"endTime":2194.83,"body":"is about two to three, four, sometimes five years that you kind of getting all your papers"},{"startTime":2194.83,"endTime":2203.31,"body":"get published. You're kind of getting all this record, getting your CV thicker. You're also learning from a different professor at the different aspect and kind"},{"startTime":2203.31,"endTime":2207.55,"body":"of more, become more specialized in your field. And then when you feel mature enough, you"},{"startTime":2207.55,"endTime":2212.11,"body":"go out and somebody give you the chance. So I applied for a bunch of these postdocs position."},{"startTime":2212.11,"endTime":2219.23,"body":"I also applying for assistant professor positions. And then I gave one guest lectures for somebody"},{"startTime":2219.23,"endTime":2223.4700000000003,"body":"that actually was a surgeon in the audience about my dis-rotation. So basically, you finish your PhD, you say,"},{"startTime":2314.59,"endTime":2319.15,"body":"okay, I'm ready to start paying my debt. But the postdocs is actually paying you, some"},{"startTime":2319.15,"endTime":2323.9900000000002,"body":"places paying lower than your PhD. And I'm like, okay, what I should do? So then"},{"startTime":2323.9900000000002,"endTime":2327.63,"body":"I have this debate basically, what I should do, because the postdocs you kind of keep"},{"startTime":2327.63,"endTime":2332.75,"body":"growing basically. You still have a mentor and somebody to guide you and you still can"},{"startTime":2332.75,"endTime":2336.35,"body":"use this time to publish. And usually they can give you more tools to publish faster."},{"startTime":2336.35,"endTime":2341.27,"body":"On the other hand, I was feeling and I still have the confidence and the motivations to"},{"startTime":2341.27,"endTime":2347.75,"body":"go and be independent. So I actually took the second position and decided I know that I will not have academic"},{"startTime":2347.75,"endTime":2352.35,"body":"mentors, right? I know I'm going to be the only engineering in the room and have nobody"},{"startTime":2352.35,"endTime":2357.55,"body":"consulting with even with the small questions, but I like, I really like the challenge and"},{"startTime":2357.55,"endTime":2362.67,"body":"I really like the opportunity because I felt that over there I can make way more impact"},{"startTime":2362.67,"endTime":2367.35,"body":"than back at the time in academia. I'm writing in a different position right now in academia,"},{"startTime":2367.35,"endTime":2369.57,"body":"but back in the time with not enough actually patients and see patients."},{"startTime":2378.29,"endTime":2381.53,"body":"And since then I saw thousands of patients with,"},{"startTime":2381.53,"endTime":2383.4100000000003,"body":"it's funny how I started with low back pain"},{"startTime":2383.4100000000003,"endTime":2386.29,"body":"and right now I'm specializing in deformity patients,"},{"startTime":2386.29,"endTime":2389.13,"body":"people citing my papers and cervical myelopathy"},{"startTime":2389.13,"endTime":2393.15,"body":"and fell back syndromes and all these events are a failure."},{"startTime":2393.15,"endTime":2395.55,"body":"So I choose the second route and I won't lie to you,"},{"startTime":2395.55,"endTime":2397.67,"body":"the first year was a hell."},{"startTime":2397.67,"endTime":2400.63,"body":"I mean, I still remember myself calling my advisor"},{"startTime":2400.63,"endTime":2404.59,"body":"at Texas Tech University asking about simple position."},{"startTime":2436.55,"endTime":2445.35,"body":"Then literally the next week, I got my first grant, which was nothing, it was $25,000, but it was one of the lead
