And, uh, so I,"},{"startTime":210.32,"endTime":213.0,"body":"I'd be honest with you, the answer to that question is I just wanted to be a"},{"startTime":213.0,"endTime":221.0,"body":"success. I just, I wanted to have a stable home for my wife, my future wife, my future kids."},{"startTime":221.0,"endTime":223.28,"body":"And, um, and so I was,"},{"startTime":223.28,"endTime":227.64,"body":"I was really motivated by seeing like friends that had parents that were doctors"},{"startTime":227.64,"endTime":232.64,"body":"or lawyers or things like that, that had resources, but were, you know,"},{"startTime":232.64,"endTime":236.32,"body":"what were good parents, you know, and, and, uh, that's, that was really the goal."},{"startTime":236.32,"endTime":239.6,"body":"Yeah. Well, no doubt you've, you've accomplished that."},{"startTime":239.6,"endTime":243.2,"body":"And a lot of times the theme that's emerged in this show"},{"startTime":243.2,"endTime":246.76,"body":"is a lot of us wouldn't have chosen the path"},{"startTime":246.76,"endTime":248.12,"body":"that unfolded before us,"},{"startTime":248.12,"endTime":250.88,"body":"but it really is what makes us who we are."},{"startTime":250.88,"endTime":254.32,"body":"And it's the stimulus that gets us to overcome"},{"startTime":254.32,"endTime":257.28,"body":"and to grind and to do the extra work"},{"startTime":257.28,"endTime":258.96,"body":"maybe that other people wouldn't do."},{"startTime":258.96,"endTime":263.28,"body":"And in this day and age, I mean, you see it firsthand."},{"startTime":263.28,"endTime":266.2,"body":"NIL is a thing, the transfer portal is a thing."},{"startTime":266.2,"endTime":269.36,"body":"If a kid's unhappy, you know, society would tell them,"},{"startTime":269.36,"endTime":275.12,"body":"get in the portal. Like, you don't have to be resilient, just find some place to go."},{"startTime":275.12,"endTime":282.56,"body":"That wasn't really how things were growing up in our era. So, I guess, let's take it all the"},{"startTime":282.56,"endTime":286.88,"body":"way back. You kind of touched on this, but start at the beginning, wherever that was for you."},{"startTime":286.88,"endTime":292.88,"body":"Yeah, well, we grew up single parent, five kids, inner city, Kansas City, and not two nickels to"},{"startTime":292.88,"endTime":293.88,"body":"really rub together."},{"startTime":293.88,"endTime":298.44,"body":"So, you know, playing new sports, playing, you know, all that kind of stuff, it just"},{"startTime":298.44,"endTime":299.44,"body":"didn't exist."},{"startTime":299.44,"endTime":305.48,"body":"And one day I was walking home, I went a different direction than the other, you know, staying"},{"startTime":305.48,"endTime":309.0,"body":"on the busy streets, there's a drug deal going bad and I went a different direction and came"},{"startTime":309.0,"endTime":315.36,"body":"across the football field and, you know, not having any boundaries and being enamored by it. I'm going to go ahead and squeeze in right here"},{"startTime":327.12,"endTime":334.0,"body":"because after hearing this again during editing, it is crushing me. Ron grew up poor. He didn't"},{"startTime":334.0,"endTime":338.6,"body":"have a dad in the picture and life for the family was rough."},{"startTime":338.6,"endTime":343.08,"body":"I've got friends who are teachers and coaches and athletic trainers who work with youth"},{"startTime":343.08,"endTime":348.8,"body":"all the time, and consistently they tell me that the kids who act out the most rarely"},{"startTime":348.8,"endTime":351.24,"body":"do it from a place of evil."},{"startTime":351.24,"endTime":352.6,"body":"They aren't trying to be troublemakers."},{"startTime":352.6,"endTime":358.42,"body":"Many of them are just acting out, carrying emotions and responsibilities that they shouldn't"},{"startTime":358.42,"endTime":362.28,"body":"have to at such a young age."},{"startTime":362.28,"endTime":367.4,"body":"And as I listen to Ron recount his story, I find myself choking down some pretty painful"},{"startTime":367.4,"endTime":369.48,"body":"emotions."},{"startTime":369.48,"endTime":377.04,"body":"To hear Ron reflect on how his coaches split second choice to give grace instead of discipline,"},{"startTime":377.04,"endTime":379.68,"body":"it absolutely cuts me to my core."},{"startTime":379.68,"endTime":382.26,"body":"Let me explain."},{"startTime":382.26,"endTime":387.88,"body":"Without a doubt, when I reflect back, a low moment in my life happened when I was helping to coach my son Tay's Little League"},{"startTime":387.88,"endTime":388.88,"body":"team."},{"startTime":388.88,"endTime":391.28,"body":"They were probably 11 or 12 years old."},{"startTime":391.28,"endTime":397.92,"body":"One of the kids on the team had a terrible attitude, and we had dealt with it all season."},{"startTime":397.92,"endTime":402.36,"body":"One at bat, after a strikeout, he was pouting and walking back to the dugout, and I heard"},{"startTime":402.36,"endTime":404.28,"body":"him mutter some cuss words under his breath."},{"startTime":404.28,"endTime":409.64,"body":"These are 11 and 12 year old kids, so I called him on it, and he immediately fired back at"},{"startTime":409.64,"endTime":413.0,"body":"me in a highly disrespectful tone."},{"startTime":413.0,"endTime":414.0,"body":"And I went off."},{"startTime":414.0,"endTime":415.68,"body":"I lost it."},{"startTime":415.68,"endTime":416.68,"body":"I let him have it."},{"startTime":416.68,"endTime":422.44,"body":"I told him right then and there in front of his teammates, in front of the fans in the"},{"startTime":422.44,"endTime":426.58,"body":"stands, in front of the other coaches, that he would respect the game."},{"startTime":426.58,"endTime":428.2,"body":"We would respect our teammates."},{"startTime":428.2,"endTime":431.56,"body":"We would respect our coaches."},{"startTime":431.56,"endTime":433.6,"body":"And I threw him out of the dugout."},{"startTime":433.6,"endTime":436.04,"body":"Not physically, but made him leave."},{"startTime":436.04,"endTime":438.6,"body":"It's exactly the way I'd been raised."},{"startTime":438.6,"endTime":444.12,"body":"And in that moment, I thought I was justified in teaching him a lesson in respect."},{"startTime":444.12,"endTime":448.48,"body":"Years have gone by since then, and I've later discovered that that player, I'll call him"},{"startTime":448.48,"endTime":452.68,"body":"Mike, that kid that I had coached right out of the dugout that night, he was from a broken"},{"startTime":452.68,"endTime":453.92,"body":"home."},{"startTime":453.92,"endTime":462.12,"body":"His mom had her hands full, and she thought setting her son up for Little League would be a way for him to make some friends"},{"startTime":462.12,"endTime":465.36,"body":"and get the influence of some men in his life."},{"startTime":465.36,"endTime":469.08,"body":"Mike later got into even more trouble, and I heard from another coach later that he got"},{"startTime":469.08,"endTime":473.76,"body":"kicked out of school and he was being sent to an alternative school due to disciplinary"},{"startTime":473.76,"endTime":475.6,"body":"issues and drug use."},{"startTime":475.6,"endTime":481.52,"body":"I'm not sure where Mike is today, but then I hear Ron tell his story."},{"startTime":481.52,"endTime":487.52,"body":"Ron McKefree is one of the most successful strength coaches in the world."},{"startTime":487.52,"endTime":496.52,"body":"He's been successful everywhere he's been, which includes stops in the NFL, several D1 colleges, as a speaker, as an entrepreneur."},{"startTime":496.52,"endTime":515.0,"body":"And all that happened because he was being disruptive and acting out and doing what kids who are troubled do, his coach chose not to go off."},{"startTime":515.0,"endTime":522.0,"body":"His coach made the harder choice to go in. He gave Ron a chance. And to Ron's credit, he took it."},{"startTime":522.0,"endTime":530.88,"body":"Who knows where Ron's life would have ended up if, in that moment, his coach had done what Mike's coach did. Me. What I did."},{"startTime":530.88,"endTime":532.72,"body":"I will forever be sorry to Mike."},{"startTime":532.72,"endTime":537.96,"body":"I squandered a chance that Ron's coach captured, and it's a powerful lesson for"},{"startTime":537.96,"endTime":538.16,"body":"all."},{"startTime":538.16,"endTime":543.14,"body":"And it reminds me of this quote, what we do in this life will echo in eternity."},{"startTime":543.14,"endTime":544.82,"body":"That one split second decision."},{"startTime":544.82,"endTime":548.26,"body":"I mean, he's never thought about that one time since, but that one split second"},{"startTime":548.26,"endTime":553.14,"body":"decision literally changed my life and gave me a passion for football that I"},{"startTime":553.14,"endTime":558.66,"body":"didn't know that I had and you know that led me down kind of you know my mom"},{"startTime":558.66,"endTime":561.66,"body":"still to this day buys me a Nerf football for Christmas every year"},{"startTime":561.66,"endTime":567.18,"body":"because that was what I wanted that year you know and and so that's ultimately you"},{"startTime":567.18,"endTime":570.66,"body":"know I did everything on my own that I could you know played football every"},{"startTime":570.66,"endTime":580.2,"body":"single day in the backyard and finally had enough money as an eighth grader to kind of play, you know, use sports and"},{"startTime":580.2,"endTime":585.56,"body":"play, you know, a team where I was the, you know, I was the B team, whatever, and the"},{"startTime":585.56,"endTime":591.2,"body":"try hard kid and went to high school and was wanting to be, you know, that same day on"},{"startTime":591.2,"endTime":596.0,"body":"that practice, they had the quarterback throw me a ball on the sideline. And, you know,"},{"startTime":596.0,"endTime":599.72,"body":"he threw it from the middle of the field to the sideline. I thought it was a mile, you"},{"startTime":599.72,"endTime":602.7,"body":"know, went right through my hands and in the nose and flooding my nose."},{"startTime":602.7,"endTime":605.26,"body":"And I thought it was the coolest thing in the world."},{"startTime":605.26,"endTime":607.86,"body":"You know, and so from that moment on, I wanted to be a quarterback."},{"startTime":607.86,"endTime":613.62,"body":"And so I go to high school, like you mentioned, and I'm the ninth quarterback."},{"startTime":613.62,"endTime":617.58,"body":"And when they said, who wants to go to what position, I was number nine,"},{"startTime":617.58,"endTime":619.78,"body":"you know, and probably viewed that way."},{"startTime":619.78,"endTime":625.5,"body":"And, you know, long story short, I ended up earning, you know, starting job and"},{"startTime":625.5,"endTime":627.84,"body":"ended up playing a couple, you know, starting a couple years in high school"},{"startTime":627.84,"endTime":632.52,"body":"and that led to kind of me getting a college scholarship to go to Ottawa."},{"startTime":632.52,"endTime":637.96,"body":"Yeah, just football ultimately kind of raised me. Coaches kind of raised me."},{"startTime":637.96,"endTime":642.72,"body":"Man, two things there jumped out at me. First of all, the impact of a coach."},{"startTime":642.72,"endTime":647.76,"body":"Yeah. And mindlessly, really. I mean, if you were to ask him, he was just doing"},{"startTime":647.76,"endTime":652.92,"body":"his job. He was just giving you a shot, but imagine the different path your life would have taken"},{"startTime":652.92,"endTime":656.32,"body":"had you gone the other direction, literally and figuratively."},{"startTime":656.32,"endTime":661.12,"body":"So I'm sure that's a lesson you've taken forward into your coaching career."},{"startTime":661.12,"endTime":665.52,"body":"But secondly, I also, and I'm not going to let you get away without telling a story,"},{"startTime":665.52,"endTime":669.56,"body":"how you went from the ninth QB to the starter."},{"startTime":669.56,"endTime":678.16,"body":"This is really, you know we're still just now starting to get it"},{"startTime":678.16,"endTime":683.88,"body":"get into film and those types of things and you know when everybody was was"},{"startTime":683.88,"endTime":687.78,"body":"taking snaps I wasn't in the top three so I wasn't getting the majority of the"},{"startTime":687.78,"endTime":692.84,"body":"snaps right away but when everybody was going that you know the camera would"},{"startTime":692.84,"endTime":702.08,"body":"catch me in the background going through the steps and and making the throw on air or carrying out my fake or whatever it was."},{"startTime":702.08,"endTime":709.84,"body":"And each day, the coach would just move me up a spot in line until I was getting those reps."},{"startTime":709.84,"endTime":715.68,"body":"And I think just the coaches in general want to see that you care as much as they do."},{"startTime":715.68,"endTime":718.48,"body":"I mean, that's why they do what they do and they're passionate about their sport."},{"startTime":718.48,"endTime":724.04,"body":"I wasn't, anybody told me that. I don't think so anyways."},{"startTime":724.04,"endTime":726.36,"body":"I just was like, man, I wanna take as many,"},{"startTime":726.36,"endTime":728.32,"body":"I wanna try to be good."},{"startTime":728.32,"endTime":730.76,"body":"And so I did that, I put a tire up,"},{"startTime":730.76,"endTime":733.12,"body":"found a tire that was in a creek bed"},{"startTime":733.12,"endTime":735.08,"body":"that I dragged out and cleaned up"},{"startTime":735.08,"endTime":739.52,"body":"and hung it from a tree and threw the ball every night,"},{"startTime":739.52,"endTime":741.72,"body":"probably had a hundred balls through that freaking tire"},{"startTime":741.72,"endTime":746.0,"body":"and had one football, so I had to go get it every time."},{"startTime":746.0,"endTime":750.32,"body":"But yeah, I think, you know, and, you know, working at something, working at your craft,"},{"startTime":750.32,"endTime":753.44,"body":"even when nobody's looking, I think is the ultimate message there."},{"startTime":753.44,"endTime":759.72,"body":"And whether that's coaching now or podcasting or whatever you choose to do with your hands,"},{"startTime":759.72,"endTime":765.0,"body":"being, you know, finding a way to, to do it when nobody's looking, I think is a critical"},{"startTime":765.0,"endTime":767.0,"body":"part of the success equation."},{"startTime":767.0,"endTime":768.0,"body":"Right."},{"startTime":768.0,"endTime":773.74,"body":"Now, this is a thousand percent a compliment, but you're not built like a quarterback these"},{"startTime":773.74,"endTime":774.74,"body":"days."},{"startTime":774.74,"endTime":776.84,"body":"You are a strong mountain of a guy."},{"startTime":776.84,"endTime":779.36,"body":"When did the weight room come into the equation for you?"},{"startTime":779.36,"endTime":784.54,"body":"Yeah, again, I think early on in high school, we were fortunate."},{"startTime":784.54,"endTime":789.84,"body":"We had a weight room, and we actually put some effort into strength and conditioning."},{"startTime":789.84,"endTime":798.96,"body":"I was 120 pounds, a freshman, and just wasn't built like everybody else and you know and so trying"},{"startTime":798.96,"endTime":804.08,"body":"to try to develop every get every ounce of athleticism out of my body I saw that"},{"startTime":804.08,"endTime":807.72,"body":"the weight room led to success I saw the people that were the fastest and"},{"startTime":807.72,"endTime":811.72,"body":"strongest that were getting the playing time were the biggest you know the guys"},{"startTime":811.72,"endTime":815.92,"body":"that were working hard in the weight room and and so you know I did that I"},{"startTime":815.92,"endTime":821.0,"body":"think I was really lucky I had a Jamie coach that was also a wrestling coach that you know"},{"startTime":821.0,"endTime":824.4,"body":"was you know was really adamant about the weight room and you know looked up"},{"startTime":824.4,"endTime":828.44,"body":"to him and and you know it's kind of came natural and then you know when"},{"startTime":828.44,"endTime":831.18,"body":"wrestling season came around and I was trying to figure out what else I could"},{"startTime":831.18,"endTime":835.12,"body":"do to get better at football they kind of threw me into wrestling and learn"},{"startTime":835.12,"endTime":839.36,"body":"learn pretty quick that you wanted to be strong in that sport so so yeah I thought"},{"startTime":839.36,"endTime":844.36,"body":"that was good and it really led to the part of it was just performance and trying to get better."},{"startTime":844.36,"endTime":846.24,"body":"Part of it was vanity at that age, right?"},{"startTime":846.24,"endTime":849.16,"body":"Just trying to look good for the girls and whatnot."},{"startTime":849.16,"endTime":853.6,"body":"But then, you know, as I went into college and I originally went to go be a"},{"startTime":853.6,"endTime":857.56,"body":"physical therapist or a doctor, it was the choices that I was headed towards."},{"startTime":857.56,"endTime":859.28,"body":"I graduated with a biology degree."},{"startTime":859.28,"endTime":862.8,"body":"And it wasn't really until my senior year that I knew that even coaching, being a"},{"startTime":862.8,"endTime":869.72,"body":"strength coach, was a possible, something that you could do and so you know I just you"},{"startTime":869.72,"endTime":873.92,"body":"know I saw the success of the weight room and the and how that applied I had"},{"startTime":873.92,"endTime":879.8,"body":"a you know interest in the science part of it the anatomy physiology part of it"},{"startTime":879.8,"endTime":886.36,"body":"and we're just what thinking about going physical therapy and and or med school"},{"startTime":886.36,"endTime":890.68,"body":"and and figured out that all sudden I could combine my love for"},{"startTime":890.68,"endTime":896.1,"body":"sport and football with kind of the science nerdy kind of what I was"},{"startTime":896.1,"endTime":898.82,"body":"Learning about and enjoying became a no-brainer"},{"startTime":898.82,"endTime":904.42,"body":"Yeah, I think there's there's that moment of clarity when it clicks for many of us where"},{"startTime":904.42,"endTime":907.42,"body":"sport is such a critical part of my life growing up and"},{"startTime":907.42,"endTime":917.04,"body":"coaches were the athletic trainers and a lot of us that stick around it even well beyond what would have been our"},{"startTime":917.04,"endTime":918.32,"body":"playing days."},{"startTime":918.32,"endTime":923.2,"body":"And for you, you extended that career from high school,"},{"startTime":923.2,"endTime":926.28,"body":"you were an all-conference defensive I never really felt like we moved that much, but I think"},{"startTime":1276.0,"endTime":1280.52,"body":"the answer to your question is that we looked at everything like an adventure. I have friends, my wife has friends that have"},{"startTime":1286.48,"endTime":1294.24,"body":"never left Kansas City, never ventured outside of that realm. They're just not very worldly"},{"startTime":1294.24,"endTime":1299.56,"body":"when it comes to seeing the world a different way or those types of things. I mean there's a lot of"},{"startTime":1602.04,"endTime":1605.96,"body":"coaching cliches that go into this but it's so true and it doesn't matter if"},{"startTime":1605.96,"endTime":1614.04,"body":"you're playing football or in a boardroom. Attention to detail is the difference between maybe getting that promotion"},{"startTime":1614.04,"endTime":1615.88,"body":"or not, getting drafted or not."},{"startTime":1615.88,"endTime":1617.92,"body":"So I think it's a powerful lesson."},{"startTime":1617.92,"endTime":1620.96,"body":"You never know who's watching, you know, and that, and you job"},{"startTime":1668.76,"endTime":1670.62,"body":"and nothing kind of coming"},{"startTime":1670.62,"endTime":1672.18,"body":"and just being kind of a little defeated,"},{"startTime":1672.18,"endTime":1674.66,"body":"you know, not defeated, I shouldn't say that."},{"startTime":1674.66,"endTime":1679.28,"body":"Just really frustrated with the lack of first time and all these things, all the"},{"startTime":1728.72,"endTime":1734.0,"body":"success and had only one losing season that entire time to our control and so that kind of put everybody's job in"},{"startTime":1742.22,"endTime":1747.86,"body":"jeopardy and mine included and the new coach came in I feel like they were kind"},{"startTime":1747.86,"endTime":1752.52,"body":"of forced it kind of told to keep me even though I was obvious I wasn't his"},{"startTime":1752.52,"endTime":1756.88,"body":"guy and he wasn't mine necessarily and got really really bitter"},{"startTime":1756.88,"endTime":1760.64,"body":"really frustrated with the profession not feeling like I had a lot of Yeah it's a good question.
