Do you agree?"},{"startTime":212.56,"endTime":220.36,"body":"I spent a few years of my career being a grumpy old man and complaining about the young generation and"},{"startTime":220.36,"endTime":222.36,"body":"one day it dawned on me that"},{"startTime":222.36,"endTime":228.46,"body":"Behavior allowed is behavior encouraged and the only reason my students weren't living up to my expectations"},{"startTime":228.46,"endTime":233.58,"body":"One of the main reasons was because I wasn't being clear with my expectations. So absolutely if we're gonna get better"},{"startTime":233.58,"endTime":242.88,"body":"We're trying to make the next generation better. The notion of a latchkey kid came about for Gen Xers"},{"startTime":269.78,"endTime":274.58,"body":"where baby boomers are widely recognized to be one of the most self-centered"},{"startTime":274.58,"endTime":279.9,"body":"generations ever and they left us to... and I'm making sweeping generalizations"},{"startTime":279.9,"endTime":285.9,"body":"here, but I know a lot of my friends and people a little bit older than I am, they"},{"startTime":285.9,"endTime":289.32,"body":"were left to fend for themselves in a lot of ways."},{"startTime":289.32,"endTime":291.4,"body":"And that creates a resilience."},{"startTime":291.4,"endTime":293.88,"body":"It also creates some indifference."},{"startTime":293.88,"endTime":300.04,"body":"It creates a kind of a chip on our shoulder where we feel like we got the shaft."},{"startTime":300.04,"endTime":301.92,"body":"Like middle children oftentimes do."},{"startTime":301.92,"endTime":306.36,"body":"They feel like that older child, they have all the pictures and they have all the"},{"startTime":306.36,"endTime":310.2,"body":"firsts for parents and the younger child, they're the baby, they get all the"},{"startTime":310.2,"endTime":317.84,"body":"attention and the middle child kind of gets overlooked. And I think that's pretty safe to say for a lot of"},{"startTime":317.84,"endTime":322.64,"body":"Gen Xers. They feel like even today you'll find lists of generations and they'll just forget"},{"startTime":322.64,"endTime":329.6,"body":"about Gen X. Boomers have a place, Millennials do, but we're commonly overlooked."},{"startTime":329.6,"endTime":334.72,"body":"Do you think I fit the criteria of my generation? What are your perceptions of"},{"startTime":334.72,"endTime":339.6,"body":"my generation stereotypes? And then I'll go into what I think are."},{"startTime":339.6,"endTime":340.1,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":340.1,"endTime":342.58,"body":"Gen Y and millennials are a little bit older than you."},{"startTime":342.58,"endTime":346.98,"body":"It's fairly typical for Gen Xers to pile on millennials."},{"startTime":346.98,"endTime":351.62,"body":"And so I feel like Gen Z gets a little less of our wrath."},{"startTime":351.62,"endTime":356.34,"body":"But my perception of Gen Z, I haven't had a lot of you in my classroom yet."},{"startTime":356.34,"endTime":357.3,"body":"You're on the younger end."},{"startTime":357.3,"endTime":358.82,"body":"I teach grad school."},{"startTime":358.82,"endTime":363.62,"body":"So far, I'm with the younger millennials."},{"startTime":363.62,"endTime":365.22,"body":"I've had elder millennials."},{"startTime":365.22,"endTime":369.06,"body":"I'd say a lot of ways you're typical, definitely more open-minded politically,"},{"startTime":369.06,"endTime":377.68,"body":"definitely are quick to see racial and gender and sex discrimination, probably"},{"startTime":377.68,"endTime":379.56,"body":"more so than earlier generations."},{"startTime":379.56,"endTime":382.88,"body":"But in a lot of ways, I feel like you are decidedly different."},{"startTime":382.88,"endTime":388.0,"body":"Your work ethic to me is in some ways second to none,"},{"startTime":388.0,"endTime":390.0,"body":"not necessarily work-related,"},{"startTime":390.0,"endTime":395.0,"body":"but when it comes to doing the work that it takes to be successful academically,"},{"startTime":395.0,"endTime":396.0,"body":"you are all in."},{"startTime":396.0,"endTime":400.0,"body":"When it comes to practicing and honing your craft,"},{"startTime":400.0,"endTime":402.0,"body":"I'd like to say you learned some of that from me,"},{"startTime":402.0,"endTime":404.0,"body":"but I don't want to take credit for all that."},{"startTime":404.0,"endTime":407.0,"body":"Like you have a drive to do your very best."},{"startTime":407.0,"endTime":413.46,"body":"And I don't – it's probably unfair of me to say that all Gen Zers don't have that"},{"startTime":413.46,"endTime":416.1,"body":"because a lot of times it just takes you a while to figure that out."},{"startTime":416.1,"endTime":420.06,"body":"If you have a natural propensity to do something, you don't have to work at it."},{"startTime":420.06,"endTime":420.8,"body":"It's just there."},{"startTime":420.8,"endTime":425.22,"body":"And so I feel like at your age and beyond as a college freshman, you're starting to"},{"startTime":425.22,"endTime":427.96,"body":"discover, I can't just show up and expect to do great."},{"startTime":427.96,"endTime":431.58,"body":"Like I got to put in the work and it takes some of your contemporaries a little"},{"startTime":431.58,"endTime":433.36,"body":"longer to figure that out than others."},{"startTime":433.36,"endTime":436.84,"body":"So that's my take on you as a Gen Zer."},{"startTime":436.84,"endTime":437.8,"body":"Oh, I definitely agree."},{"startTime":437.8,"endTime":441.0,"body":"I think I like the words open-mindedness."},{"startTime":441.0,"endTime":441.96,"body":"I think that's nice."},{"startTime":441.96,"endTime":446.0,"body":"I think sometimes that's perceived as questioning all authority,"},{"startTime":446.0,"endTime":449.96,"body":"which sometimes it is, but I definitely think that I fit that"},{"startTime":449.96,"endTime":451.44,"body":"stereotype of my generation."},{"startTime":451.44,"endTime":454.96,"body":"Just, we don't just want to know the what, we want to know the why,"},{"startTime":454.96,"endTime":456.1,"body":"which I think is cool."},{"startTime":456.1,"endTime":460.24,"body":"It can get annoying because sometimes that conversation is a lot longer"},{"startTime":460.24,"endTime":466.56,"body":"to know the why or you just want to say, do it this way. I think one big reason why I might not"},{"startTime":466.56,"endTime":471.68,"body":"fit some of the other stereotypes of my generation is because it's because of my family. I've had a"},{"startTime":471.68,"endTime":476.96,"body":"very stable home life. It's been very secure. And so I think that has contributed to, I know"},{"startTime":476.96,"endTime":485.68,"body":"my generation has a lot of stereotypes of pretty bad mental health issues because one, they're more willing to talk about it, but also two,"},{"startTime":485.68,"endTime":490.0,"body":"because I think my generation just struggles with it a lot. That's a really big thing because"},{"startTime":490.0,"endTime":494.96,"body":"so many people that I know don't have that stable home life. So I'd say maybe it's a"},{"startTime":494.96,"endTime":499.72,"body":"lot easier for me to have a hard work ethic because I'm not struggling with all the mental"},{"startTime":499.72,"endTime":504.12,"body":"health problems that a lot of my peers do. Not that I don't struggle with any, but I"},{"startTime":504.12,"endTime":509.64,"body":"I think just because of how I was raised, that's pretty unique for my generation."},{"startTime":509.64,"endTime":515.08,"body":"So for the olds like me, I didn't even know what anxiety or depression were when I was your age."},{"startTime":515.08,"endTime":520.12,"body":"Nobody talked about it. There was no social media. Hey, I'm suffering with this. And so if you had"},{"startTime":520.12,"endTime":526.92,"body":"it, if you were struggling with it, you did it alone. I don't know of anyone in my high school"},{"startTime":526.92,"endTime":531.6,"body":"who went to therapy ever. And that's a marked difference from what you'll see today."},{"startTime":531.6,"endTime":534.68,"body":"And I'm not bragging about that or saying it's good or bad."},{"startTime":534.68,"endTime":535.68,"body":"It's just the difference."},{"startTime":535.68,"endTime":539.24,"body":"And Comedian Not Long Ago, I think I shared it with you, where he said his daughter was"},{"startTime":539.24,"endTime":542.12,"body":"asking him about his mental health and said, therapy?"},{"startTime":542.12,"endTime":544.08,"body":"My dad didn't care if I was thirsty."},{"startTime":544.08,"endTime":545.88,"body":"Like it just wasn't a thing."},{"startTime":545.88,"endTime":551.64,"body":"You're expected to be resilient and tough and lift yourself up by your own bootstraps."},{"startTime":551.64,"endTime":557.68,"body":"And I think with that, your professors who are my age and older, we probably tend to be a"},{"startTime":557.68,"endTime":564.88,"body":"little less caring and compassionate than your generation might want or like or expect."},{"startTime":564.88,"endTime":566.92,"body":"And that could create some conflict."},{"startTime":566.92,"endTime":570.96,"body":"But the flip side of that is, a lot of times we feel like a younger generation doesn't"},{"startTime":570.96,"endTime":571.96,"body":"have the resiliency."},{"startTime":571.96,"endTime":581.0,"body":"You don't have the stick-to-it-ness to struggle through the tough times, because there's plenty of times when I don't necessarily feel like doing things,"},{"startTime":581.0,"endTime":584.0,"body":"but there's strength and there's, to me,"},{"startTime":584.0,"endTime":587.0,"body":"there's honor in figuring out a way to still be successful."},{"startTime":587.0,"endTime":591.0,"body":"That sounds like I'm discrediting mental health. I'm not."},{"startTime":591.0,"endTime":594.0,"body":"Certainly there comes a time when you need help."},{"startTime":594.0,"endTime":597.0,"body":"But I think for most of us,"},{"startTime":597.0,"endTime":601.0,"body":"that notion of indifference and being left to our own devices made us a little"},{"startTime":601.0,"endTime":604.76,"body":"jaded and a little skeptical."},{"startTime":604.76,"endTime":607.56,"body":"And so the only person we knew to trust was ourselves."},{"startTime":607.56,"endTime":608.56,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":608.56,"endTime":612.72,"body":"And I think that's a good segue that there's pros and cons to all the outlooks, all the"},{"startTime":612.72,"endTime":614.0,"body":"generations."},{"startTime":614.0,"endTime":619.48,"body":"Maybe it's resilience, maybe it's pushing yourself too far, or maybe it's giving up,"},{"startTime":619.48,"endTime":622.92,"body":"or maybe it's taking care of prioritizing your mental health."},{"startTime":622.92,"endTime":624.48,"body":"Who knows what?"},{"startTime":624.48,"endTime":629.4,"body":"But I thought it would be fun to do pros and cons for each generation, but you would do"},{"startTime":629.4,"endTime":634.64,"body":"my generation and I'll talk about yours with what we think are the pros and cons."},{"startTime":634.64,"endTime":636.8,"body":"So starting off, what you think are the..."},{"startTime":636.8,"endTime":642.28,"body":"Yeah, I think one thing that you and your brother have helped me do is, and we've worked"},{"startTime":642.28,"endTime":647.56,"body":"on this notion of privilege, flew all over me at one point in my life."},{"startTime":647.56,"endTime":653.0,"body":"up in a poor area, kids that were subjected to poverty and abuse."},{"startTime":653.0,"endTime":658.32,"body":"And I didn't, in my definition of privilege, I didn't necessarily see that."},{"startTime":658.32,"endTime":664.92,"body":"But because your generation is looking to right wrongs and looking to create"},{"startTime":664.92,"endTime":668.92,"body":"community, regardless of whatever you would choose to describe yourself, you"},{"startTime":668.92,"endTime":674.88,"body":"guys really forced me to take a hard look at my own biases."},{"startTime":674.88,"endTime":679.08,"body":"And so I think one pro certainly is that idea of inclusion,"},{"startTime":679.08,"endTime":682.28,"body":"that idea of diversity and equity."},{"startTime":682.28,"endTime":685.04,"body":"That's an expectation for your generation."},{"startTime":685.04,"endTime":686.48,"body":"And it wasn't for mine."},{"startTime":686.48,"endTime":688.04,"body":"It was much more divided."},{"startTime":688.04,"endTime":692.34,"body":"And I don't feel like it was as ugly as times passed,"},{"startTime":692.34,"endTime":694.52,"body":"but there was still tolerance."},{"startTime":694.52,"endTime":696.44,"body":"It's weird I use that word,"},{"startTime":696.44,"endTime":699.36,"body":"but there was a tolerance of racism."},{"startTime":699.36,"endTime":701.14,"body":"There was almost, it's okay."},{"startTime":701.14,"endTime":702.14,"body":"It's just, you're just joking."},{"startTime":702.14,"endTime":703.64,"body":"It's just, you're just kidding around."},{"startTime":703.64,"endTime":704.7,"body":"And it's not."},{"startTime":704.7,"endTime":708.88,"body":"And I think that's definitely something that you and your brother and your"},{"startTime":708.88,"endTime":710.76,"body":"friends have helped me to the con is my generation's fault."},{"startTime":722.04,"endTime":723.72,"body":"I struggled to go to college."},{"startTime":723.72,"endTime":726.36,"body":"I didn't have an opportunity to go to a major four-year"},{"startTime":726.36,"endTime":727.8,"body":"school or a private school."},{"startTime":727.8,"endTime":731.9,"body":"And so I knew that I wanted you and your brother to"},{"startTime":731.9,"endTime":733.96,"body":"have different opportunities."},{"startTime":733.96,"endTime":737.78,"body":"I wanted to provide for you in ways."},{"startTime":737.78,"endTime":741.42,"body":"And I think part of that has made you a little hesitant to launch."},{"startTime":741.42,"endTime":742.78,"body":"You don't, you have friends."},{"startTime":742.78,"endTime":746.48,"body":"So this is really probably a little too specific, but you've got friends"},{"startTime":746.48,"endTime":747.82,"body":"who have had to pay their own way."},{"startTime":747.82,"endTime":752.16,"body":"You have friends who've had to work and they've had to struggle and scrimp."},{"startTime":752.16,"endTime":758.0,"body":"And in some instances defer their plans because they couldn't afford"},{"startTime":758.0,"endTime":759.6,"body":"to do what they were wanting to do."},{"startTime":759.6,"endTime":766.44,"body":"And so I think at least for you and your friends and Tay and his friends, I feel"},{"startTime":766.44,"endTime":770.42,"body":"like because my generation has worked so hard to make things better for you than we had it,"},{"startTime":770.42,"endTime":777.54,"body":"it's been too easy. It's come at no real cost to you and it needs to be yours. I don't want to"},{"startTime":777.54,"endTime":782.9,"body":"constantly provide for you. I do, but in the process, if that makes you weak and it makes you"},{"startTime":782.9,"endTime":787.94,"body":"unaware of the true cost of what it is you're doing, then I've almost done you a disservice."},{"startTime":787.94,"endTime":797.6,"body":"There's a lack of agency. other"},{"startTime":1697.36,"endTime":1702.64,"body":"day and I was like I don't understand why we're doing this project and I I turned it in and that's good, but maybe we just need to push through and give our best effort no"},{"startTime":1726.52,"endTime":1727.52,"body":"matter what."},{"startTime":1727.52,"endTime":1731.0,"body":"Yeah, there's actually a movement in higher ed, it's called TILT."},{"startTime":1731.0,"endTime":1735.32,"body":"It's Transparency in Learning and don't give them that transparency, then it just creates a greater likelihood"},{"startTime":1763.6,"endTime":1765.64,"body":"of miscommunication on my part."},{"startTime":1765.64,"endTime":1770.8,"body":"And so nothing I hate more than a professor who's vague with the assignment and then takes"},{"startTime":1770.8,"endTime":1776.8,"body":"points off of me because I didn't meet a standard that existed only in their mind."},{"startTime":1776.8,"endTime":1783.24,"body":"And so be explicit, tell the story, and hopefully at that point, your students will give you"},{"startTime":1783.24,"endTime":1784.24,"body":"a better effort."},{"startTime":1784.24,"endTime":1785.24,"body":"That's interesting."},{"startTime":1785.24,"endTime":1786.52,"body":"That's crazy."},{"startTime":1786.52,"endTime":1791.64,"body":"I think we've talked about a lot of good and bad things about all of our generations."},{"startTime":1791.64,"endTime":1796.36,"body":"So I am saying to just go have a conversation with someone who's in a different generation"},{"startTime":1796.36,"endTime":1797.52,"body":"than you."},{"startTime":1797.52,"endTime":1802.08,"body":"Maybe if you're turning this into a real assignment, if we're being clear and explicit, write down"},{"startTime":1802.08,"endTime":1803.56,"body":"three things you learned and then you can reflect and be"},{"startTime":1803.56,"endTime":1807.32,"body":"like, okay, here's what I can learn from other generations."},{"startTime":1807.32,"endTime":1811.16,"body":"Because I think that's really important just to go have conversations with people who are"},{"startTime":1811.16,"endTime":1815.84,"body":"different than you in general, but for this talk specifically, people who are different"},{"startTime":1815.84,"endTime":1817.8,"body":"than you in terms of age and generation."},{"startTime":1817.8,"endTime":1818.16,"body":"So."},{"startTime":1818.16,"endTime":1818.96,"body":"Yeah, I agree."},{"startTime":1818.96,"endTime":1827.3,"body":"I think our church does a great job of connecting people of different life stages."},{"startTime":1827.3,"endTime":1831.02,"body":"And it also helps tear down some of those stereotypes for me."},{"startTime":1831.02,"endTime":1833.82,"body":"It'd be real easy for us, all of us."},{"startTime":1833.82,"endTime":1839.3,"body":"It's just the nature of social media and algorithms for us to focus on our"},{"startTime":1839.3,"endTime":1845.96,"body":"differences and view anyone who's not of our generation as being this negative thing."},{"startTime":1845.96,"endTime":1855.6,"body":"And where we tear that down is I can't simultaneously think that all boomers are self-centered egomaniacs when"},{"startTime":1855.6,"endTime":1860.2,"body":"I've got great relationships with a half dozen people who are boomers who are none of those"},{"startTime":1860.2,"endTime":1862.0,"body":"things."},{"startTime":1862.0,"endTime":1866.8,"body":"And so stereotypes die in the face of evidence."},{"startTime":1866.8,"endTime":1877.0,"body":"And that's something that I've learned is if I just stay in my little bubble of like-minded bubble."},{"startTime":1877.0,"endTime":1883.0,"body":"It's easy and frankly lazy to decry the shortcomings in a younger generation's work ethic or effort"},{"startTime":1883.0,"endTime":1888.0,"body":"without recognizing that much of that is dependent upon how well I have explained things."},{"startTime":1888.0,"endTime":1892.0,"body":"That's exactly what this conversation has reminded me to do."},{"startTime":1892.0,"endTime":1896.0,"body":"My take-home for today is that it's unfair of me to hold my students to a
