Scientist Bree overcomes Emetophobia in TWO WEEKS!
This week Michelle Johnson is joined by Bree Billington who overcame her debilitating fear of being sick by reading the Emetophobia-Free manual is just TWO WEEKS!!
In this brilliant episode Scientist Bree explains that she developed Emetophobia around the age of 7 after what witnessing a traumatic incident. Bree believed that because she had witnessed the event at a young age, there was nothing she could do to get rid of her Emetophobia and she was stuck with it for life.
Bree struggled for over 20 years with Emetophobia, anorexia, agoraphobia and depression. As a child she would go to bed at 5:30pm as she was scared of the night time, she would drink soda water all the time and not eat meat. Her family were unaware of her phobia and thought she was simply a shy child.
When Bree became a teenager it became even more debilitating as she was unable to drink alcohol or go to parties and she developed fixed routines that she had to stick to. She didn’t allow other people to cook for her and didn’t want to be around friends incase they were sick.
Once she was working she started having panic attacks as she as afraid either herself or her co-workers were going to be sick. Bree actually got into University to become a teacher but ended up dropping out as she was so scared of children being sick.
Bree now works as a Scientist in Pathology. Her partner is also a Scientist and is well educated in both Neuroscience and Psychology. Bree bought The Thrive Programme manual THREE YEARS before she eventually decided to open it and start.
Bree explains that she was was too anxious to start the programme as she didn’t think she would be cope with going through it with how anxious she felt at the time. It was only when Bree’s partner eventually looked at the manual and said ‘You need to do this!’ that she eventually took the plunge and began the programme.
Bree is now loving her life, totally over her Emetophobia and has recently completed training to become a licensed Thrive Programme Coach! Bree is now seeing clients around her job.

Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Research suggests 0.1 to 8.8% percent of the population have a fear of being sick (Hout & Bouman, 2011). Emetophobia is a debilitating phobia, which significantly impacts your life: sufferers are chronically anxious and go to great lengths to avoid encountering anything sickness-related, which provides temporary relief but often results in a rollercoaster of anxiety, fear and exhaustion. Issues associated with emetophobia include: OCD, eating difficulties, anxiety-related gastric problems, phagophobia, tocophobia and more. Our goal is to raise awareness of this severe phobia and provide a solution for sufferers and their families.
