Why dyslexia didn't hold me back from beating Emetophobia (the fear of vomit).
The Emetophobia-Free Programme was developed to be easy to understand and accessible by those with learning disabilities and/or neurodiversity.
Coach Ruth speaks to Emma regarding her experience going through The Emetophobia-Free programme with dyslexia, and how being neurodivergent affected her understanding of the programme and processing of the new concepts contained within it.
Like many with dyslexia, Emma reported having never read a book from start to finish before, but with guidance and coaching, not only were the concepts easy to grasp, but Ruth had the expert knowledge necessary to make the programme accessible, applicable, and specific to Emma’s life. This included the use of not only the Emetophobia-Free manual, but the videos , blog and podcast content that is available on the Emetophobia-Free website.
It is the role of the Emetophobia-Free Coach to ensure that every chapter is understood by the client and is processed by them in a way that is meaningful to them. This ensures that clients with neurodivergence or processing issues are certain that they understand and can apply the contents of each chapter, before progressing to the next.
This is what makes The Emetophobia-Free Programme so effective. The programme avoids long and convoluted explanations and instead focuses on the clients understanding. In this video, Emma explores the fact that both emetophobia and her dislike of reading stem from unhelpful beliefs regarding her ability to cope, and it was only once she confronted this, deconstructed these beliefs, and put the effort in to recreate helpful beliefs, that this was changed for the better.
Not only was the programme highly accessible despite Emma’s dyslexia and neurodiversity, but the understanding she gained within the programme benefitted her due to her newfound confidence and developed skill set. This in turn boosted her self-esteem and self-belief and changed her life so much that she trained to become a Emetophobia-Free Coach herself.

Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Research suggests 0.1 to 8.8% percent of the population have a fear of being sick (Hout & Bouman, 2011). Emetophobia is a debilitating phobia, which significantly impacts your life: sufferers are chronically anxious and go to great lengths to avoid encountering anything sickness-related, which provides temporary relief but often results in a rollercoaster of anxiety, fear and exhaustion. Issues associated with emetophobia include: OCD, eating difficulties, anxiety-related gastric problems, phagophobia, tocophobia and more. Our goal is to raise awareness of this severe phobia and provide a solution for sufferers and their families.
You do not need to live with Emetophobia - you can COMPLETELY overcome it. The Thrive Programme for Emetophobia (also known as Emetophobia-Free) is the single most successful and predictable method for getting rid of your emetophobia. It has helped over 20,000 emetophobes around the world overcome their phobia.
