Fearless Travel: Beat Emetophobia and Embrace the World!

EmetophobiaFree

Does your intense fear of vomit stop you from travelling? Ex-emetophobe Lauren Singer joins Michelle Johnson on the podcast to talk all things Emetophobia and travel.

Lauren developed her Emetophobia from around 5 years old. Before the Emetophobia-Free Programme, when the topic of travel was raised Lauren thought “I would love to be able to do that!” but then her inner voice would begin asking what if XYZ happened, which would increase the pressure she felt to engage in the experience.

Lauren's Emetophobia ruined a large number of trips for her. Despite her going, they were not what they could have been. Emetophobia caused Lauren to eat mainly ‘safe’ foods and during a trip to Spain another passenger informed Lauren that she had just overcome a stomach bug. This heightened her anxiety to such extremes, that she was offered an early exit from the trip.
Lauren would also suffer from extreme anxiety when listening to other people’s experiences involving sickness and travel.

Since the Emetophobia-Free programme,  Lauren has booked a snorkelling holiday, where she didn't even consider the toilet situation because it didn’t matter. She knew she would cope regardless! Lauren is now able to be present in the moment and experiences genuine excitement before travelling.

3 top tips for travelling with Emetophobia:

Gain perspective and look for evidence - Take the time to view the experience from a non-emetophobic perspective What thoughts do they have? What evidence do they have for their experience? Focus on the outcome and goal of what you’re trying to achieve.

Use your imagination powerfully - Your imagination is a powerful tool.If you imagine a fearful experience, you’re priming yourself for the worst case scenario. You believe this is preparing you, but it isn't. Rehearse a positive experience and focus on how you would like this narrative to look.

Build the belief you want to have about travel - Focus on building a belief in yourself that you can cope with uncertainty. Look for evidence of times that you have coped and managed with unexpected events. Ensure to process and celebrate your small steps.

Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting/sickness: either yourself, other people, or both. Research suggests 0.1 to 8.8% percent of the population have a fear of being sick (Hout & Bouman, 2011). Emetophobia is a debilitating phobia, which significantly impacts your life: sufferers are chronically anxious and go to great lengths to avoid encountering anything sickness-related, which provides temporary relief but often results in a rollercoaster of anxiety, fear and exhaustion. Issues associated with emetophobia include: OCD, eating difficulties, anxiety-related gastric problems, phagophobia, tocophobia and more. Our goal is to raise awareness of this severe phobia and provide a solution for sufferers and their families.

You do not need to live with Emetophobia - you can COMPLETELY overcome it. The Thrive Programme for Emetophobia (also known as Emetophobia-Free) is the single most successful and predictable method for getting rid of your emetophobia. It has helped over 20,000 emetophobes around the world overcome their phobia.
