Demystifying The Inclusive Framework with Dr Ada Adeghe
'What do we mean by an inclusive curriculum? We can all agree that the language of higher education contains a lot of jargon. We must have a shared understanding about what we are talking about. We all have different educational backgrounds
and lived experiences, so why would our understanding of the terminology used in
learning and teaching be the same? Phrases such as ‘decolonising the curriculum’, ‘liberation of the curriculum’, ‘blended learning’, ‘inclusiveassessment’, are used liberally, but how often do we pause to ensure that we agree and
understand what these mean?
The Inclusive Framework for Curriculum Design and Development provides an opportunity for the University – all members of staff and students – to have a shared understanding about what we mean by an inclusive curriculum. If we are not able to define what each of the principles and sub-principles mean, then the Framework will never be implemented effectively across the institution. The definition of an inclusive curriculum provided in Framework document is “the process of developing, designing, and delivering programmes of study to minimise the barriers that students, regardless of educational, dispositional, circumstantial, or cultural background, may face in accessing and engaging with the curriculum”. It might be an accurate statement of what an inclusive curriculum should be, but it doesn’t explain how we will get there. A shared understanding of what the terminology in the Framework means is
start the process of implementation. ' Professor Phil Gravestock
