Old Ladies and Authoritarianism: A Tuesday Chat
Free speech stands at a precarious crossroads, and Jimmy Kimmel's return to late-night television represents far more than just entertainment—it's a barometer for democracy's health. As he steps back into the spotlight following controversy, the fundamental question looms: Will he continue his trademark political comedy undaunted, or will pressure from powerful figures cause him to self-censor? The answer matters for all of us.
The timing coincides with Libra season, traditionally associated with balance and justice—fitting symbolism as we weigh the scales between courage and compliance. As someone who received opportunities from Kimmel's show later in life, I'm grateful for platforms that amplify diverse voices. At almost 78, finding work as "a crabby old lady" reminds me that authenticity matters, whether on screen or in civic life. There truly "are no small parts, just small actors."
Patriotism itself has become contested territory, transformed from simple national pride into something weaponized and exclusionary. When government agencies threaten journalists and politicians target perceived enemies through social media, self-censorship becomes the first quiet surrender before more visible freedoms fall. If celebrities with wealth, influence and platform privilege cannot speak freely, what hope exists for average citizens? Tonight's show isn't just about laughs—it's about whether we still believe in Franklin Delano Roosevelt's wisdom that "we have nothing to fear but fear itself." Watch closely, because this moment reveals whether we'll stand tall or bend to intimidation.
MORNIN BITCHES PODCAST
happy tuesday and guess what season it is? Libra season. Okay. So I thought I would just quickly read. If it's your birthday today and I'm a Libra, my birthday is on Friday, so let's just read this right now. If today's your birthday, welcome to the year of the muse. You'll spark delight everywhere, inspiring others while becoming the artist of your own story. Your voice carries, your style commands, and your humor wins more than laughs, more highlights. An intoxicating romance, perfect timing on a property move and entertainment Wow. That becomes an opportunity. Sagittarius and Gemini adore you. Lucky numbers are 8, 12, 29, 33, and 50. Okay, so you know it's Libra season. If you're a Libra, you know what that's all about.
Speaker 1:So let's talk about oh my god, this is a wonderful article in the time by Anita Shabria. For the sake of democracy, now is not the time to back down. So Jimmy Kimmel is coming back fast enough that there are still folks out there who didn't know he was gone. I know. First let me say this you know, when I went back into show business and when I was 65, you know, one of the first jobs I had was a skit in Jimmy Kimmel show, on the Jimmy Kimmel show. So grateful for that. And I did another bit a few years ago with Sarah Silverman. So I want to thank Jimmy Kimmel for giving me that opportunity.
Speaker 1:You never forget and though I'm an ancillary character in a lot of you know things I do, I'm not always a primary actor, okay, I'm a background actor. You know I'm in everything. If you need an old lady, a crabby old lady, a loud mouth old lady, a funny old lady, I'm your person and I'm happy to be that. Remember, there are no small parts, just small actors. I don't know who said that. Maybe somebody could let me know. Okay, so hallelujah, praise be to ABC. Free speech triumphs.
Speaker 1:It all depends on Tuesday night when we see if Jimmy Kimmel returns undaunted or if he has been subdued I hope not daunted. Or if he has been subdued, I hope not Of all the consequential, crazy, frightening events that have taken place in recent days. Kimmel's return should be a moment we all watch a real time late night. Look at how successful our president is at forcing us to censor ourselves through fear. Please, jimmy, don't back down. If Kimball Tabber's comedy now pulls his punches on making fun of power, he sends the message that we should all be afraid, that we should all bend. Maybe he didn't sign up for this, but here he is, a person in a position of influence, being forced to make a risky choice between safety and country. That sounds terribly dramatic, I know, but self-censorship is the heart of authoritarianism. If I could speak English, I'd be better.
Speaker 1:Authoritarianism, whatever. When people of power are too scared to crack even a joke, what does that mean for the average person? If Kimmel, with a celebrity, clout and wealth, cannot stand up to this president, what chance to the rest of us have? Patriotism used to be a simple thing, a bit of apple pie, a flag on the 4th of July, maybe even a twinge of pride when the national anthem plays and all the words pop into your mind, even though you can't find your car keys or remember what day it is. It's just something there running in the background, an unspoken acknowledgement that being American is a pretty terrific thing to be.
Speaker 1:Now, of course, patriotism is the most loaded of words. It's been metastasized and barfed out by MAGA movement. Maga, this, a specific, cruel, white, western gentric dogma, demands a narrow and angry Christianity, christian animal, dominant civic life and happy Rosh Hashanah to those who are of the same faith as me. There's been a deluge of examples of this subversion in recent days. I got that pronounced correctly. The Pentagon is threatening to punish journalists who report information it doesn't explicitly provide. The president use social media to demand US Attorney General Pam Bondi go after his perceived enemy Ay yi yi. So I'm not going to.
Speaker 1:Anyway, the one that put a knot in my stomach was the speech by Stephen Miller, trump's immigration czar, speaking without humor at the memorial for Charlie Kirk. Okay, so I'm just going to read through the. You know all the other parts, so let's hope that Jimmy Kimmel can come back with a laugh, proving we have nothing to fear but fear itself. Or are we seriously in trouble? Who said we've got nothing to fear but fear itself? I believe that was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a great president, a great man, who had polio and through that all, all of it, he was president for four terms.
Speaker 1:So, kimmel, I love you. Not only do I love you because you speak your mind, like all of the night hosts do, but because you gave TikTok Bobby, my kitty SJ Mendelselson, a chance. You know that's very important for me to have a chance at a new career, and I'm going to be 78 years old on Friday, so I'm in the Libra season. So I just wanted to tell you, if nobody told you, they love you today. Jimmy Kimmel, I love you and, by the way, because you're you, be yourself everybody. Don't be afraid. I know it's tough times right now in our country. Somehow, someway, just don't be afraid and just be yourself, because who else are you going to be but you? So TikTok Bubby signing off, can't wait to see Jimmy Kimmel tonight. I'll even stay up late. I have an acting job tomorrow, lucky for that. So be good to yourself. Bye, and now I'm going on TikTok. So I'll do a live thing on TikTok, we'll do the astrology and all that.
