SAVE ERCE  Episode 1 - Eye of the Dragon

2 NIGHTS BEFORE HALLOWEEN  October 29

(You hear the beating of a dragon's wings, as he flies in the night sky.)

DUNCAN the Dragon
“This is the place. I feel the power of the amulet in those mountains down below.”

DUNCAN the Dragon
“Grandfather, I will now find what we need and bring it back.”

(He flies lower and lands in Blackball Mountain and sees an opening. )

(He enters a large cave. The ceiling is covered with bats.
As he flicks his tail - they start flying around him)

DUNCAN the Dragon
“Cripes! Bats, bats ...everywhere! Cheech….I hate bats!”

VINCE (a bat hanging from the cave ceiling)
“Hey, Chill bro’.
Why do you hate us?”

DUNCAN
“Who said that?”

VINCE
“Oh, one of those bats!”

DUNCAN
“You’re no bat, come show yourself, and fight!”
He swings around and hits his tail on the walls, some stones come crashing down.

VINCE
(Laughs)
“You’re like a bull in a china shop!”

DUNCAN
“I am a dragon, Man!
Stop laughing at me, or you’ll be one fried bat!”

VINCE
“Let me introduce myself.”

DUNCAN
“Which one of you bats is talking?”

VINCE
“Over here.
(pause)
You can call me Vince”

(He slowly appears as himself, a vampire.)

DUNCAN
“What the ….!
Are you some kind of changeling?”

VINCE
“My, what a mess you made!
hmmm... all over my new cape.
This was made by the best tailor in Florence.”

 (and dusting off his cape)

“You ask - Am I a changeling?
Yes, I am from the underworld. Some call me ‘bloodsucker’ or ‘Vampire’.
I hunt them. They hunt me. Blaaaah  Blah-blah.”

DUNCAN
“Well, Vince, I am a changeling too.
(pause)
Do you live here ….in this cave?”

VINCE
“Here I find peace hangin’ with the bro’s. Reminds me of the old days.
But no, I reside in a house now, just like the living do.”

DUNCAN
“What? In the town? With them?

VINCE
“Caves are too damp for me.
Ya’ know being undead so long, I kinda enjoy being around them.
They make me feel alive!”

“But tell me, what brings you here to our fine town?
I haven’t seen a dragon in centuries.
I had presumed you were all extinct. ”

DUNCAN
(stomping and smoke is pouring out of his nostrils)
“Extinct?!
When dragons are extinct, you can be sure everyone will be too!
And you  know - that may be just around the corner, Vince! ”

VINCE
(coughing, trying to get the smoke away from him)
“Wow, Do you always get this smokey when you get mad?”
(pause)
“Calm down Duncan.
I would like to invite you to a special gathering this week. There are many of us, magicals, in this town.

DUNCAN
Magicals? My grandfather said there would be no magic in this land.

VINCE
Well, there is magic and we have been here for a very long time.

We are from the otherworld.
We are witches, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, goblins and more
We are a secret society in this town

DUNCAN
“Secrets - I know all about that.
We dragons live high among the humans to guard all that is sacred to Erce.

VINCE
This gathering is for Halloween, our favorite time of the year.

DUNCAN
“You mean like the festival of Samhain?”

VINCE
“Indeed!
If you are a changeling, do you turn into something…. ahh, something a little smaller?
I don’t think you'll fit into the building like this!”

DUNCAN
“Yes, I can be small and look human like you.
“I will have you know, I am an artist as well.”
(puffing out his chest)

VINCE
“Like Michelangelo? Now he was a funny guy.”

DUNCAN
“I am known as -- GLOW. My pieces are up all over Scotland!
I am spreading the warning about Erce. She must be saved!”

VINCE
“Erce?
I remember that somewhere ….. Ahh ‘The Earth’!
Well, that is impressive.
A dragon artist on a mission to save us all!

DUNCAN
My grandfather has sent me here on this mission. But I have time to attend your gathering for one night. As I said, I am curious about you Magicals.

VINCE
Duncan, I will come back to this cave in two nights and we can go to the party together.
I’ll introduce you to all  the Magicals in the town.”     Index

Bedtime Stories -  another part of Wincharm on a quiet street.
Home of Brad the soccer Dad.
Brad is reading a bedtime story to his daughter Layla.

BRAD:
Alright, it’s time to go to bed, Layla.
(he tucks her into bed)

LAYLA:
Can you read to me?

BRAD:
OK… Let’s see - Talking to Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede.
Alex, from Bookends, recommended this ‘cause she knows you love stories about dragons.

LAYLA:
Yeah! And stories about wizards, ….and unicorns, ….and magic!
How would you talk to a dragon, anyway?

BRAD:
Good Question.
(pages turning)
These are the questions that… could keep you up at night? No, we don’t want that… How about …teaching you good survival tips?… just in case… you meet a dragon?
(he laughs)

LAYLA: (laughs with him)
You never know, right Dad?

BRAD: (laugh)
You never know Layla….
Anway, let me start reading

(He reads the first part of chapter one.)
Chapter 1
In Which Daystar Leaves Home and Encounters a Lizard

Mother taught me to be polite to dragons. Particularly polite, I mean; she taught me to be ordinary polite to everyone. Well, it makes sense. With all the enchanted princesses and disguised wizards and transformed kings and sons wandering around, you never know whom you might be talking to. But dragons are a special case.

LAYLA:
“I would say so, wouldn’t you, Dad?”
“What does that mean?
Particularly polite?

BRAD:
“I’m not sure. Dragons are probably different from the rest of us.”

LAYLA:
“Well, they are dragogns, right? They’re kinda big and they can fly -”

BRAD:
“Yes, and can be very fiery…”

LAYLA:
“I like how it starts, keep reading, Dad?

BRAD:
Ok kiddo.

(He reads a little bit more as she falls asleep)

Not that I actually talked to one until after I left home. Even at the edge of the Enchanted Forest, dragons aren't exactly common. The principal is what matters, though: Always be polite to a dragon. It’s harder than it sounds. Dragon etiquette is complicated, and if you make a mistake, the dragon eats you. Fortunately I was well trained.

In the industrial zone of  the town in Wincharm:

I could have danced all night
2 NIGHTs BEFORE HALLOWEEN Oct 29th
(Echoing thru the large bakery - you hear waltz music,  and Judith and James are ballroom dancing.)

JUDITH
“Oh James, dancing with you is so divine.”

JAMES
“Remember the old days? The BlackPool Competition.
(pause)
The ballroom at the Winter Gardens was so beautiful.

JUDITH (dreamily)
“Oh, it was our dream come true!
I wore my pretty chiffon gown

JAMES
You never looked lovelier!

JUDITH
"and you well, looked so handsome and debonair.
(pause as they turn)
We dazzled them, didn’t we, Darling?”

JAMES
“Yes, We did, my Love!”

(DELIVERY GUY is driving in a van, late at night, bumpy road -we hear sounds of the car and bumps)

Talk radio station - a voice of a listener -

Paranormal Host Jeremy Hamiliton:
“UFO Sighting - we have caller  Ericka : Tell us what have you seen in the sky?

Man on radio
“Tonight I saw a something really strange, it was some big shadow, up near Blackhill Mountain. I have never seen anything like it. ”

DELIVERY GUY
“Lots of potholes on this street - there goes my shocks. Man, this looks like the Last stop in Nowheresville.
Allright where are you ...13 Mockingbird Lane.
(pause)
“Oh, there it is … Madison Bakery.
(pause)
“Seen better days! Looks kinda abandoned!
Oh, wait a minute, I see a light at that door.”

(You hear stop the van and get his packages and walk to the door)

(Delivery Guy knocks on the door).

DELIVERY GUY
“Hello! Hello! Richie’s Delivery Service with Your Order!”
(pause)
“Hello. Delivery!”

JUDITH
(stops dancing, says behind the door)
“Leave it at the door, please!”

DELIVERY GUY
“Alright Lady, you sure you don’t want me to bring it in?!”

JUDITH
(says behind the door)
“Yes I’m sure, it will be fine.”

(Delivery man puts the packages down at the door and walks away.
Opens the van door. Sit down.
Starts the van and see the bakery door open and the packages lift up in the air!)

======meanwhile=====
(Door opens )

JUDITH
“Our delivery is here Darling!”

JAMES
“Oh, let me help you, my Sweets”

JUDITH
“I hope I didn’t forget anything.”

JAMES
“It looks like it is all here.”

Delivery guy in the truck, writing on his delivery pad

DELIVERY GUY
(tired talks in his caller)
“Roger, Delivered the package finally… Can I go home now?”

RADIO DISPATCHER
“Sure, just one more -  Can you do one more delivery at the store?”

DELIVERY GUY
“Alright! - “

Radio in his cab:
Caller:
‘Yes, I did see something floating in the air last week … Saturday night I had a fender bendah down by the rivah - guy broke my blinkah…. I looked up and saw ‘em - it was 2 ghosts -they was dancin real nice!

JEREMY, the paranormal radio host:
“Are you sure it wasn’t smoke or something?

Caller:
“Smoke?? Get outta here! It was real,.. Hey!...believe me! I’m not some kinda nut!”

DELIVERY GUY
(upset)
“What? Are those packages floating in the air!
Boy, these double shifts got me seeing things!”

GABRIEL, co-host of the paranormal radio show
“Halloween brings out the kooks - sorry I mean the spooks!
Where did you see these prancing phantoms?”

Caller:
“In the industrial zone,  up by that old bakery”

DELIVERY GUY
(upset)
“Yikes...This is just way too creepy - I’m getting out of here!”

JEREMY
“Oh, the industrial zone…there have been other sightings from other callers. And Gab’s says it time for a commercial break.

(We hear a commercial for halloween store)
(Drives away screeching .)

JUDITH
(Taking the boxes in and putting them on the table and closes the door)
“Oh James, we can start cooking for the party!”

JAMES:
“But first … Tango, my Dearest?”

We hear tango music…..
