Why Mental Health Matters On The Tools

SPEAKER_00

Hello everyone, welcome back to Sparky's Life, the show where we talk shop, share stories, and keep it real in the world of the trading. I'm your host, Brat Filco. Today in the show, we're talking about something that doesn't get enough airtime in the trade. That's mental health, stress, and learning how to actually switch off. Not in the light of candle and journal kind of way, but in a real sparky or trading boots on the ground way. Because let's be honest, most of us don't stop. We don't talk about threats, and we just push through until something breaks. And usually that something isn't a circuit, it's us. So if you're ever felt constantly wired, snapped at people for no reason, dreaded the Monday morning, or felt exhausted even after a weekend off, this episode's for you. So let's get the show started. Why Sparkies and other tradies are especially at risk. Sparkies and tradies cop a unique mix of pressure. We deal with physical work, tight deadlines, safety risks, client expectations, and constant problem solving. On top of all that, a lot of us are self-employed, have financial responsibilities for family, financial responsibilities for business loans and monthly business expenses, juggling quotes, invoices, and jobs. Your brain never switches off. And the thing is, stress doesn't always show up as a panic attack. For Sparkies and other trades, stress often looks like a short temper, feeling angry all the time, headaches, poor sleep, drinking more, zoning out, or just feeling flat and worn out. And because we're trained to be tough, we ignore the signs. The importance of actual mental health breaks. Let's talk about breaks. Not having morning tea or lunch while answering emails or returning calls. Not using your lunch break to do quotes. I'm talking about real breaks. Your brain needs time off where no one needs you. Nothing is too urgent and you're not on or mentally switched on. Even short mental breaks during the day can make a massive difference. Here are some simple examples. Try sitting in your Ute or a quiet area or a quiet room for five minutes with no phone. Use some slow breathing techniques between jobs. Eating lunch away from the switchboard or away from the job. These aren't lazy habits, they're maintenance on your body. Just like servicing your tools. Practical ways to combat stress that actually work. So let's get practical. Here are some four real tips Sparkies and other tradies can do to lower stress. Tip number one is move your body outside of work. Yes, we're physical all day, but work movement doesn't count. Your body needs intentional and functional fitness or movement that isn't rushed or stressful. This could be walking for ten minutes or longer outside or on a treadmill, going to the gym for strength training or cardio, going to your local pool for swimming, doing some stretching or trying yoga or tai chi. Go riding on your pedal bike or stationary exercise bike. Every 20 minutes helps reset your nervous system. Here's tip number two. Limit after hours work noise. One of the biggest stress triggers for Sparkies is never switching off. If possible, stop answering calls or turn the phone off after a set time. Use voicemail. Batch admin to certain hours or even set aside a day during the week for admin. So what we do, we set a day off the tools every week to do our admin. As for your clients, the world won't end if a PowerPoint fails at eight o'clock at night or the TV reception fails at nine o'clock at night because there's more to life than watching TV. Tip number three get better sleep without overthinking it. You don't need perfect sleep routines. Just focus on consistent bed times, less phone or device time before sleep, cooling down properly. Sleep is where your stress battery gets recharged. Just like charging up your devices. So no sleep, eagles, no resilience, or no strength. Tip number four. Talk. Even if it feels awkward. You don't need therapy language. Just try talking to a mate. Talk to your partner. Talk to another sparky or trady friend. Sometimes saying, Yeah mate, I'm cooked, or I've had enough for the week or day. Hi there, I'm Grant Dorco. If this is your first time here at Sparky's Life, welcome. It's great to have you here. And if you're back here for more, welcome back and thank you for your loyalty and support. If you like what you hear on today's show, make sure you share this podcast with your mates who are electricians or who are involved in the tradey world. I want to reach out and help as many tradies as I can with this podcast. I want to help tradespeople break through to the next level in their career and in their lives. This part is huge. You need something in your life that isn't just electrical or your chosen career. No side hustles, no overtime, not even DIY. A real outlet. This could be fishing, surfing, camping, cycling, running, music, woodwork, restoring cars, photography, cooking, or even podcasting, or creating a YouTube channel. Like what I'm doing right now, this is my passion, and I enjoy producing the show. From start to finish, being a creator. From the research, the script writing, recording and editing, to the final uploading to the podcasting platforms. Other interests I have are going to the gym here in Warhope and being a motorcycle enthusiast. It doesn't matter what it is, only that it absorbs your attention, it gives your brain a break, and it's not about money. The goal is to remind yourself you're more than just a sparky or a tradesperson. Recognizing when you need to slow down. Here's an important one. You don't need to hit rock bottom to make changes. The warning signs could and may include constant fatigue, being irritable, avoiding people, losing interest in things, feeling overwhelmed by small tasks. If you notice these, don't ignore them. Slow down before burnout forces you to stop. That might mean taking a day off, booking a short break or extended holiday, cutting back working hours, or even asking for help. This is not failure, that is leadership over your own life. Another stress management tool we have implemented at our business is along with the four days on the tools and Friday off the tools for our admin work. We have also included that one week every month, we work three days on the tools and two days off the tools. So in that week we work Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday on the tools. Thursday is off the tools for our admin day. And Friday is completely off, so that week is a long weekend. Why looking after your mental health makes you a better sparky or tradey? Here's the irony. Taking care of your mental health actually makes you safer, sharper, more patient, more professional, you make fewer mistakes, you deal with clients better, you enjoy the job more. Mental health isn't separate from work, it directly affects your workmanship. Alright, listeners, we'll wrap it up there. So if this episode hit close to home, you're not alone. Being a sparky or tradie is tough, mentally and physically. Looking after your head doesn't make you soft, it makes you last longer in the trade and in your life. If you got value from this episode, share it with a mate. Check in on someone you work with, or just take one small step for yourself this week. And remember, you wouldn't run a job with faulty safety gear. So don't run your life without looking after your mental health. Thanks for listening to Sparky's Life. I'm your host, Grant Durko. And I'll leave you with this one. Why did the Sparky take a day off? Because even circuit breakers need a reset. So that's all for now, folks. But before I go, if there is anything you'd like me to talk about on future episodes, maybe want to ask a question or be on the show, you can do this by contacting us on any of our media sites. I'll put the links to these in the show notes. And don't forget to follow the show and leave a review. Thanks for listening to Sparky's Life. I'm your host, Grant Dilko. Keep safe and catch you on the next one.
