Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
Welcome to the new season of the podcast, now titled "Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation"!
Join your host, Pastor Robert Young, as we embark on a journey of spiritual exploration and renewal. This podcast is designed to help you deepen your faith and find inner peace through calming, reflective, and transformative meditative practices inspired by scripture.
Our Evolution
While the podcast, formerly known as Not Your Parent's Religion, focused in Seasons 1 and 2 on correcting misinformation and myths about religious beliefs and the teaching of Jesus Christ, the program has evolved. In Season 3, we began drawing closer to God with guided meditations, exploring all the details of why and how to meditate, and discussing the Biblical origins of Christian meditations.
With over 30 years of experience in Church planting and mentoring other Pastors, and 30+ years of training leaders in evangelism/discipleship, Pastor Young is here to guide you through these moments of stillness and connection with God.
What to Expect in Season 4
We are excited to return with Season 4 starting Sunday, October 5. We will continue to offer a structured weekly schedule:
- Sundays: Our weekly guided meditation episode.
- Monday through Friday: Daily devotions and reflections that expand on the topic of the Sunday meditations.
- Wednesdays: Audio episodes of our House Church series. This series reflects the Bible's teaching that believers should gather together for corporate worship, fellowship, encouragement, and even admonishment.
For those seeking an enhanced experience, we are adding video versions of the meditations and devotions to our Patreon page. These videos are designed to give you a more immersive experience as you meditate on the Father, His teachings, and His presence.
Tune in each week as we lead you on this path to connecting more deeply with God.

Finding Hope Through Christian Meditation
DanNow I imagine some listeners might find that unsettling.
SheilaTo hear such raw emotion directed at God.
DanYes, especially if you've been taught.
SheilaThat faith means always being positive.
DanNever questioning. Hey everyone, Dan and Sheila here, Pastor Young's AI co-hosts.
SheilaFilling in while he's out there on his evangelism mission, spreading the good news.
DanThat's right. Speaking of spreading the word, don't forget about the podcast tour.
SheilaOh yeah, kicking off March 28th 2025.
DanYou can be a part of it in any way you like.
SheilaAbsolutely, Whether it's in person, online or just by spreading the word.
DanAll the info is in the description box below. So for those of you familiar with Pastor Young's work, you know he's been exploring Christian meditation lately. Yeah, a fascinating shift, for not your parents' religion, right it?
Sheilais Going from debunking religious misinformation to these ancient practices.
DanFor modern spiritual growth.
SheilaExactly, and today we're diving deep into one of his guided meditations.
DanFinding Hope in the Midst of Emotional Storms. A Meditative Journey Through Psalms 13.
SheilaI love that title.
DanMe too. Who hasn't felt lost in an emotional storm sometime right?
SheilaIt's so relatable, so human.
DanAnd what's interesting is how Pastor Young uses that raw emotion.
SheilaAs a starting point for a spiritual journey.
DanSo walk us through it. How does he guide listeners through this meditation?
SheilaWell, it's broken down into several stages.
DanOkay, so it's structured like a roadmap.
SheilaPrecisely it begins with confession.
DanConfession. Hmm, that might sound a bit old-fashioned to some.
SheilaIt might, but it's incredibly powerful.
DanWhat makes it so powerful?
SheilaI think it's about acknowledging our imperfections.
DanOur need for forgiveness.
SheilaYes, creating space for God's grace.
DanSo it's about humility.
SheilaExactly. Recognizing we don't have all the answers, opening ourselves up.
DanSomething bigger.
SheilaYes, and he uses Psalm 51.1-4 as a guide for this stage.
DanWhere King David pours out his confession. It's such honesty and that leads into breathwork.
SheilaRight.
DanI'm curious why breathwork in a Christian meditation?
SheilaThat's a great question. Well, breathwork is often associated with Eastern practices, true, but it has roots in Christianity too. The Bible uses breath.
DanAs a symbol of God's spirit.
SheilaExactly His life-giving spirit.
DanSo is he connecting listeners to that spiritual dimension Through a physical experience?
SheilaI believe so it's about bringing awareness to your breath, that vital force that sustains you, and recognizing God's presence in that very breath.
DanAlmost like a physical manifestation of faith.
SheilaYou could say that, and this focus on the physical continues into the next stage.
DanMuscle relaxation.
SheilaYes.
DanNow, this is where I see the connection to modern well-being.
SheilaBlending ancient wisdom with contemporary understanding.
DanOf the mind-body connection.
SheilaAbsolutely. He guides listeners through tensing and releasing different muscle groups.
DanStarting from the calves and working up Exactly. I can already feel myself relaxing. What's the purpose?
SheilaIs it just physical relaxation? I think it goes deeper.
DanOkay.
SheilaIt's about releasing tension.
DanPhysical and emotional.
SheilaYes, to create a state of receptivity.
DanFor the spiritual journey, exactly Preparing yourself to fully engage.
SheilaAnd this preparation leads to the next stage, worship.
DanNow, this is where the Christian part comes in.
SheilaAbsolutely.
DanYeah.
SheilaShifting our focus from ourselves to God.
DanExpressing gratitude.
SheilaAcknowledging his presence.
DanAnd how does he guide listeners into that?
SheilaHe uses verses from Psalms 108.
DanEmphasizing the joy and awe Of praising God.
SheilaIt's not just reciting words.
DanBut cultivating a feeling.
SheilaOf reverence and love.
DanAnd this sets the stage for the final stage.
SheilaThe passage itself, psalms 13.1-6.
DanThis is where things get really interesting.
SheilaOh, absolutely, but before we go there, let's pause for a moment. And let our listeners reflect on these stages of preparation.
DanSo we've journeyed through confession, breath, work.
SheilaMuscle relaxation.
DanAnd worship All these layers of preparation.
SheilaEach one leading us deeper.
DanInto a state of openness.
SheilaReceptivity.
DanFor what's to come.
SheilaWhich brings us to Psalm 13.
DanThe heart of this meditation. What makes it so significant?
SheilaWell, it's raw, you know.
DanIt is, isn't it? It's King David.
SheilaWrestling with doubt, despair.
DanEven anger towards God.
SheilaHe doesn't shy away from those emotions.
DanThose questions we all have in our darkest moments.
SheilaHe cries out how long Lord, will you forget me forever.
DanHow long will you hide your face from me?
SheilaIt's a cry of anguish.
DanA feeling abandoned.
SheilaLost.
DanNow.
SheilaI imagine some listeners might find that unsettling To hear such raw emotion directed at God.
DanYes, especially if you've been taught.
SheilaThat faith means always being positive.
DanNever questioning.
SheilaBut what Pastor Young highlights here?
DanIs the honesty.
SheilaIn our relationship with God.
DanSo it's not about suppressing those emotions.
SheilaOr bringing them to God.
DanTrusting he can handle them.
SheilaExactly David models that vulnerability.
DanThat unfiltered expression.
SheilaAnd it's fascinating, this raw honesty.
DanIs actually a sign of deep faith.
SheilaIt is how so.
DanWell, I've always been taught that doubting God is a weakness.
SheilaThat's a common misconception. But think about it. If you truly believed, God couldn't handle your doubts, wouldn't you hide them?
DanYou would you'd pretend everything was okay.
SheilaExactly.
DanSo by bringing our doubts to God, we acknowledge his strength his capacity to hold even our darkest emotions.
SheilaYes, it's a paradox of faith.
DanThe more we acknowledge our weakness, the more we lean into God's strength, and that's what David does in Psalm 13.
SheilaHe does.
DanHe starts in despair, but then something shifts.
SheilaHe remembers God's faithfulness.
DanHe recalls past experiences.
SheilaOf God's love and deliverance.
DanAnd that memory becomes an anchor.
SheilaIn the storm.
DanShifting our focus from our circumstances.
SheilaTo the unchanging nature of God.
DanHis constant presence.
SheilaEven when we feel abandoned.
DanWhen we can't see him.
SheilaHe's still there Working for our good.
DanAnd that shift in perspective.
SheilaLeads to a change in David's emotional state.
DanIt does. The psalm ends with but I trust in your unfailing love.
SheilaMy heart rejoices in your salvation.
DanHe's moved from despair to hope.
SheilaNot by ignoring the pain.
DanBut remembering God's faithfulness.
SheilaAnd that's the core message right.
DanHope isn't the absence of pain, but the presence of God in the midst of it. Exactly.
SheilaHow do we bridge that gap?
DanBetween David's experience and our own lives.
SheilaHow do we apply this ancient psalm?
DanTo our modern struggles.
SheilaWell, that's where the beauty of this meditation lies.
DanPastor Young provides tools.
SheilaActionable steps to integrate this message into our lives.
DanLike what.
SheilaFirst, an affirmation, Thank you, Lord, for understanding when I feel and express my emotions to you. Thank you for always being faithful.
DanNow I've heard about affirmations, but how do they work?
SheilaIn a spiritual context.
DanYeah.
SheilaIt's about rewiring our thinking.
DanReplacing negative thoughts. With truth aligned with God's word.
SheilaSo by repeating this, we're reminding ourselves.
DanGod's love and faithfulness even when our emotions tell us otherwise. Like planting seeds of truth in the garden of our minds crowding out the weeds of doubt and fear. I love that analogy. Are there other tools?
SheilaHe uses visualization.
DanVisualization is a powerful technique. How does that work in a Christian context?
SheilaHe guides listeners to imagine God listening to them.
DanTo imagine God listening.
SheilaCaring about their emotion.
DanOffering comfort.
SheilaReassurance.
DanThat's beautiful, especially for those who struggle.
SheilaTo feel God's presence.
DanIt's creating an internal experience.
SheilaThat reinforces the truth.
DanThat God is with us. Even when we feel alone engaging, not just our minds but our emotions, our imaginations to create a more holistic experience of faith.
SheilaExactly. And finally, he encourages reflection.
DanReflection on what.
SheilaOn your own experiences of God's faithfulness.
DanWhy is that important? It's about connecting the dots seeing the evidence of God's love in our own lives using that as a source of hope. So remembering those times when we felt God's presence.
SheilaThose moments of breakthrough.
DanDeliverance.
SheilaAnd drawing strength from them.
DanIt's about building a reservoir of hope.
SheilaA wellspring of faith.
DanThis is so insightful and practical.
SheilaIt is.
DanWhat strikes me is how Pastor Young blends ancient wisdom.
SheilaWith modern psychology.
DanIt's amazing.
SheilaIt's a testament to his understanding.
DanOf both the spiritual and human.
SheilaAnd it makes this meditation so powerful.
DanRelevant for today's world.
SheilaAddressing the whole person.
DanMind, body and spirit, Absolutely A holistic approach to faith.
SheilaIntegrating ancient practices with contemporary insights.
DanSo we've explored the stages of preparation.
SheilaThe raw honesty of Psalm 13.
DanThe tools for applying its message.
SheilaWhat's the key takeaway?
DanFrom this deep dive.
SheilaI think it boils down to this. Even in our darkest moments.
DanGod is present.
SheilaLoving and faithful.
DanAnd remembering his faithfulness, drawing strength.
SheilaUsing tools like affirmations and visualization.
DanCan help us navigate those storms.
SheilaAnd emerge with a deeper sense of hope.
DanAnd connection with God.
SheilaBeautifully said.
DanFaith isn't about denying our pain.
SheilaBut finding God in the midst of it.
DanAnd that journey.
SheilaOf deepening our faith.

SheilaNot at all.
DanIt's about connecting with God in practical ways.
SheilaThrough practices rooted in scripture, exactly.
DanAnd he offers tools anyone can use.
SheilaRegardless of their background.
DanSo, as we wrap up, what's the one thing you'd want listeners to ponder?
