Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
Welcome to the new season of the podcast, now titled "Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation"!
Join your host, Pastor Robert Young, as we embark on a journey of spiritual exploration and renewal. This podcast is designed to help you deepen your faith and find inner peace through calming, reflective, and transformative meditative practices inspired by scripture.
Our Evolution
While the podcast, formerly known as Not Your Parent's Religion, focused in Seasons 1 and 2 on correcting misinformation and myths about religious beliefs and the teaching of Jesus Christ, the program has evolved. In Season 3, we began drawing closer to God with guided meditations, exploring all the details of why and how to meditate, and discussing the Biblical origins of Christian meditations.
With over 30 years of experience in Church planting and mentoring other Pastors, and 30+ years of training leaders in evangelism/discipleship, Pastor Young is here to guide you through these moments of stillness and connection with God.
What to Expect in Season 4
We are excited to return with Season 4 starting Sunday, October 5. We will continue to offer a structured weekly schedule:
- Sundays: Our weekly guided meditation episode.
- Monday through Friday: Daily devotions and reflections that expand on the topic of the Sunday meditations.
- Wednesdays: Audio episodes of our House Church series. This series reflects the Bible's teaching that believers should gather together for corporate worship, fellowship, encouragement, and even admonishment.
For those seeking an enhanced experience, we are adding video versions of the meditations and devotions to our Patreon page. These videos are designed to give you a more immersive experience as you meditate on the Father, His teachings, and His presence.
Tune in each week as we lead you on this path to connecting more deeply with God.
Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
The Road to the Manger: Meditation from Luke 2:1-7
The road to Bethlehem isn’t glamorous. It’s dusty, inconvenient, and slower than we want—and it’s exactly where promise takes shape. We invite you to step onto that road with Mary and Joseph through a guided Christian meditation that blends scripture, breathwork, and quiet reflection so your heart can make real room for Christ.
We begin with a posture of honesty, using Psalm 51 to prepare the heart, then move into a calming rhythm of breath and gentle muscle relaxation to settle the nervous system. From there, we lift our gaze with Psalm 100 and Psalm 8:9, letting worship shift the atmosphere inside. With the soul steadied, we enter Luke 2:1–7 through vivid visualization: the winter light, the steady clip of the donkey, Mary’s expectancy, Joseph’s quiet strength. Their obedience to an inconvenient decree becomes a lens for our own lives, showing how God often guides us through ordinary disruptions toward His perfect timing.
Along the way, we offer five faith-centered affirmations to anchor your mind: God guides your path in difficulty, obedience is the next right step, the promise of Christ is nearer than it seems, you’re entrusted to guard the holy, and God’s timing is trustworthy. You’ll also sit with two probing questions that invite practical change: where is God calling you to a quiet yes, and what clutter must be cleared from your heart’s inn to welcome the Savior? We close with a simple rhythm for daily practice so peace becomes a habit, not a moment.
If you’re longing for less noise and more presence, this journey offers a gentle, scriptural way to return to center. Press play, breathe deeply, and walk toward the manger with hope. If this meditation helps you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs calm, and leave a review so others can find their way to peace too.

Welcome to this week's Guided Christian Meditation. Here, we put aside all distractions to enter into God's presence and hear from God better and to allow the Holy Spirit to make us more like Christ. I'm your host, Pastor Robert Young, and thank you for allowing me to be your guide on this journey. If you're new to Guided Christian Meditation, check out episode 164 entitled Getting Started in Guided Christian Meditation. Episode 164 explains the why and even the science of all of the stages of meditation that we practice. If you suffer from severe anxiety, depression, trauma, psychotic episodes, or if you are in active addiction, then please consult your physician before beginning this or any meditation practice. Our theme for this week is The Road to the Manger. Our scripture is from Luke chapter two verses one through seven, where it says, And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria, and all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be taxed with Mary, his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered, and she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Before we begin to reflect on this passage, according to the scriptures, God requires us to be completely involved and free from wrongful acts in mind, body, and spirit. Confession prepares the heart for being in the presence of Almighty God. Let's repeat the prayer that King David prayed in Psalms fifty one verses one through four, where it says, Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness, according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Before we start to reflect on the passage, let's prepare our minds by calming our nervous system. First, close your eyes and take a deep breath as we invite the presence of God to feel us. Now, take a deep breath in for a count of seven, hold the breath for a count of five, and release slowly for a count of seven. Now, let's prepare our bodies by releasing any tension with muscle relaxation exercises. We will simply tense each muscle group for three seconds and then release the muscle. As we always say on the podcast, don't hold your breath for this portion of the meditation. Let's start with the calf muscles. Lightly tense the calf muscles for a count of three. Now release. Moving upward to the hamstrings, the quads, and the glutes. Lightly tense for three seconds. Now release. Moving upward to the abdominals, the chest and back areas. Lightly tense for three seconds. Now release. Finally, moving to the arms and shoulders. Lightly tense these muscle groups for three seconds. Now release. Now we can begin to enter into worship by repeating Psalms one hundred verses one through three where it says, Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him with joyful songs. Let's take a moment to lift up our voice in praise and thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father who is worthy of all honor and glory by repeating Psalms chapter eight, verse nine, which says, Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. Now we can begin to reflect on the scene in Luke chapter two verses one through seven. Imagine yourself traveling with Mary and Joseph. It is twelve days before the nativity. The air is cool. The sky is often pale with the winter sun. You are on a dusty road leading toward the town of Bethlehem. You might be walking beside a gentle donkey, hearing the soft clip clop of its hooves and the creak of the saddle. Hear the quiet shuffling of sandal feet on the rocky path. Feel the steady rhythm of the journey, the continuous movement forward. Look at Mary. She is quiet, maybe leaning against Joseph for support. Notice her posture. She is full of expectation, carrying the promise of the world within her. Her heart is a sanctuary. Notice Joseph, his shoulders squared with responsibilities, his eyes focused on the path ahead. He is a man of quiet strength, a faithful protector. Now, imagine your own heart is on this journey. It is a place of unsettled travel right now, full of your own concerns, deadlines, and preparation. But the path is leading you toward a singular, holy destination, the presence of Christ. You are not running from something, you are moving toward the promise. Feel the faith of Mary and Joseph surrounding you. Despite the hardship of the journey, the crowd, the discomfort, the long days, they move forward in obedience to the census decree and trust in God's divine plan. Rest in their peaceful obedience. The goal is in sight. Repeat these affirmations either out loud or silently, letting them sink into the truth of your own life's journey. One, my life's journey is guided by God's purpose, even when the path is difficult. two, I will walk in faithful obedience, trusting the path laid out before me. Three, the promise of Christ is closer than I think. I prepare my heart for his arrival. Four, like Joseph, I will be a faithful protector of the holy things God has entrusted to me. And five, I trust the timing of God. I am exactly where I need to be in this moment of waiting. As you continue to breathe slowly and deeply, open your heart to these questions. Allow the answers to rise within your spirit naturally, without judgment or striving. Then take five minutes to reflect on them. Mary and Joseph obeyed a difficult, inconvenient government decree, the census, because it was God's way of fulfilling prophecy. Where is God currently calling me to a quiet act of obedience or inconvenience that I know is ultimately leading to his will? two Mary and Joseph traveled so far, yet they found no room in the inn. Question, as I prepare for the arrival of Christ, what is my heart's inn like right now? Is it too cluttered with noise, busyness, or distraction to welcome the quiet presence of the Savior. Heavenly Father, thank you for the example of Mary and Joseph, who walked in faith even when the path was long and difficult. Help me to follow their spirit of quiet, trusting obedience. Clear the clutter from the end of my heart. Give me the grace to recognize that every step of my journey is a step toward your holy presence. Amen. Listen to this meditation daily until it saturates your soul. Follow up every day with the daily devotionals and reflection questions about this subject. As you reflect on God's goodness and mercy, as He guided and protected Mary and Joseph and the promise, feel your soul ignite with faith and confidence that God is with you and guiding you. Amen.
