Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
Welcome to the new season of the podcast, now titled "Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation"!
Join your host, Pastor Robert Young, as we embark on a journey of spiritual exploration and renewal. This podcast is designed to help you deepen your faith and find inner peace through calming, reflective, and transformative meditative practices inspired by scripture.
Our Evolution
While the podcast, formerly known as Not Your Parent's Religion, focused in Seasons 1 and 2 on correcting misinformation and myths about religious beliefs and the teaching of Jesus Christ, the program has evolved. In Season 3, we began drawing closer to God with guided meditations, exploring all the details of why and how to meditate, and discussing the Biblical origins of Christian meditations.
With over 30 years of experience in Church planting and mentoring other Pastors, and 30+ years of training leaders in evangelism/discipleship, Pastor Young is here to guide you through these moments of stillness and connection with God.
What to Expect in Season 4
We are excited to return with Season 4 starting Sunday, October 5. We will continue to offer a structured weekly schedule:
- Sundays: Our weekly guided meditation episode.
- Monday through Friday: Daily devotions and reflections that expand on the topic of the Sunday meditations.
- Wednesdays: Audio episodes of our House Church series. This series reflects the Bible's teaching that believers should gather together for corporate worship, fellowship, encouragement, and even admonishment.
For those seeking an enhanced experience, we are adding video versions of the meditations and devotions to our Patreon page. These videos are designed to give you a more immersive experience as you meditate on the Father, His teachings, and His presence.
Tune in each week as we lead you on this path to connecting more deeply with God.
Growing Closer to God with Guided Meditation
Daily Devotion: The Road to the Manger | Thursday
Start with the road, not the manger. We revisit the nativity by tracing the ninety-mile journey to Bethlehem and discover why the space between promise and fulfillment is where faith becomes real. Instead of angelic choruses and guaranteed outcomes, we sit with cold nights, sore feet, and a young couple who kept moving without a map. Their story reframes our own: when plans are thin and the path is rugged, character is formed step by steady step.
We talk about the difference between spiritual highs and the quiet work of endurance, and how trust survives in the silence. Joseph’s responsibility without clarity and Mary’s perseverance under strain reveal a pattern of active trust that’s more than optimism. It’s practical, grounded, and repeatable: name reality without drama, shrink the horizon to the next faithful step, remember past provision, and accept help when it comes. These habits turn belief into motion and keep hope from collapsing under the weight of uncertainty.
If you’re somewhere between what you were promised and what you can see, this conversation offers language and tools for the long middle. We explore how small choices build resilience, why delay doesn’t mean denial, and how the ordinary road can be sacred ground. The nativity’s wonder includes the miles that led there; your breakthrough may be framed by unseen miles too. Walk with us as we practice trust that doesn’t depend on perfect conditions and learn to find meaning in the middle.
If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who’s on a hard road, and leave a review to help others find these conversations. What’s the next faithful step you’ll take today?

When we think of the nativity, we often picture the stillness of the stable or the glory of the angels. But before the manger, there was the road. The journey from Bethlehem was roughly ninety miles of rugged terrain. For a young couple, one of whom was heavily pregnant, this wasn't just an inconvenience. It was a grueling, dangerous test of endurance. Consider the silence of that journey. They had received angelic visitations and grand promises months prior, but now, now they were dealing with the mundane and difficult realities of life. A government decree, a forced senses, sore feet, cold nights, and the crushing weight of responsibilities. Fa is easy when the angels are singing. It is much harder when the road is long and the destination is uncertain. Joseph had to trust that he could protect his family without a clear plan for where they would stay. Mary had to trust that God would sustain her through the physical agony of the child, the travel. They didn't have a guarantee of a warm room. They didn't have a map of how the birth would go. They simply had a command to go and the faith to take the next step. Often, God calls us to a destination that feels impossible to reach. We feel caught between the promise and the fulfillment. The road in between is where our character is forged. Like Joseph and Mary, we are called to be faithful in the walking, trusting that God is directing our steps even when the path is rugged. Our question for reflection. Is there an area in your life right now where you feel you are on the road, struggling between a promise God gave you and its fulfillment? How can you practice active trust in God today, even without seeing the final outcome?
