help him and publish some of his sermons and he would write them and publish them and helped him get to be very well known and newspapers began to kind of get involved even at that age, at that time, and helped spread the word and from there preaching, and he was also associated. 00:13:02.450 --> 00:13:10.931 George Whitfield was associated with John Wesley, the Wesley Brothers Methodism, and that was back when you had the shouting Methodist. 00:13:10.931 --> 00:13:22.339 You had Methodists that believed in the power of the Holy Ghost, and so there was a tremendous revival at that time, from 1734 to 1743. 00:13:23.566 --> 00:13:35.793 And that prepared the colonies, the 13 colonies, when God began to sweep across that early and this is before they're a nation, now they're still colonies they signed that Declaration of Independence? 00:15:41.932 --> 00:15:52.446 When they signed that document, they basically became traitors to England, traitors to the crown, and they volunteered to 00:17:26.651 They didn't have an army like the British. 00:17:26.651 --> 00:17:34.290 I mean the British with their flutes and their drum sets and their marching in the red coats, line after line of george Washington, after he was the winning general and all of that, he went home. 00:19:03.347 --> 00:19:13.375 He didn't establish, you know, a political party and crowned himself king of America. floor would open up and the flames of hell would come up in the church building and you'd smell the hellfire and brimstone in the church and people would fall on their face and scream and repent from 00:24:57.155 He's six foot five, big old fella, and he was a ruffian boy. 00:24:57.155 --> 00:25:06.627 I mean, he was a wild guy and his mother was Methodist, prayed for him continually and then he'd go into sorrow and he didn't know how to repent. 00:25:06.627 --> 00:25:09.519 He didn't know how to give his heart to Jesus. 00:25:09.519 --> 00:25:18.930 So he showed up, this Cain Ridge revival in Kentucky and this other person that was at a meeting like that. 00:25:18.930 --> 00:25:24.262 There were five or six preachers preaching, this vast crowd. 00:25:24.262 --> 00:25:27.276 There was such a vast crowd that one preacher couldn't be heard. 00:25:27.276 --> 00:25:29.156 So they had five or six spread through there. 00:25:29.156 --> 00:25:39.458 They'd stand on a stump, they'd stand on a wagon back and they'd preach and people would just be everywhere and under in the woods and they'd be preaching this message. 00:25:39.458 --> 00:25:54.161 And Peter Cartwright showed up at one of those meetings and the guy that wrote this article said I've personally witnessed one day as the preaching of the gospel went forth, 500 people all at one time just went out in the spirit. night on the trail, he puts his head on a horse saddle and sleeps and covers up with a blanket and eats a rabbit or something that he kills on the side of the road and gets on down. 00:26:42.078 --> 00:26:44.309 I mean, this was a huge sacrifice. 00:26:44.309 --> 00:26:57.998 He preached like that for 40 years and he would have people come up to him and try to give him trouble and sometimes he had to administer the five-fold ministry because he was big enough to take care of himself. 00:26:57.998 --> 00:27:07.299 One time some guys came after him and he ran away from him and he said quick, you know, and he acted like he had a whole army out in the woods. 00:27:07.299 --> 00:27:10.635 He said, quick, they're right behind me, close in on them and get them. 00:27:10.635 --> 00:27:16.535 And, man, they thought horseback riders were gonna arrest them and they turned and ran the other directions. 00:27:16.535 --> 00:27:20.135 So he didn't always swing his fist, but he knew how to take listening to him would start to jerk, jerk, and this was before the dance, the jerk that we had in the sixties I'm talking about. 00:27:42.551 --> 00:27:49.237 They jerked, and if they resisted world, the siphon of riches, the lust of other things, entering in chokes, the word, and so then people kind of backslide in churches started sliding back in the 1840s or so and churches were not being well attended. 00:28:46.657 --> 00:29:01.698 And in New York City it was so difficult to live in Manhattan because you can imagine the horses and the horse dung and the dust and the heat and the summertime it was a nasty place to live. 00:29:01.698 --> 00:29:04.657 The big cities of the Northeast they're just a little narrow. 00:29:04.657 --> 00:29:11.698 They didn't know they were gonna grow like that and they grew up they couldn't grow out and little narrow streets and everybody was. 00:29:11.698 --> 00:29:18.917 So people moved out and moved into the suburbs and left the old churches there and they were kind of empty, nobody going. 00:29:19.289 --> 00:29:26.201 And so the Dutch reform denomination hired this young man, a guy by the name of Jeremiah Lempheer. 00:29:26.201 --> 00:29:33.397 He was a businessman and he had been gloriously saved and wanted to do something for the Lord. 00:29:33.397 --> 00:29:34.756 He said what would you have me do? 00:29:34.756 --> Manhattan. 00:29:50.369 --> 00:30:03.240 He went door to door handing out flyers and talking, ministering to people, trying to get them saved or get them into church where they could get saved, and it was a complete failure. 00:30:03.240 --> 00:30:12.453 I mean, most of the people living there then were immigrants, they were workers, they were of different persuasions and they just were hard. 00:30:12.453 --> 00:30:16.959 They were hard to talk to, hard to, and he just wasn't having any success. 00:30:16.959 --> 00:30:20.076 And so then he went to the Lord in prayer again. 00:30:20.076 --> invite the businessmen because they go to lunch every day, they have a time of refreshing refreshing and liquid refreshing and invite them to the prayer meeting at the church. 00:30:41.664 --> 00:30:49.547 So he went around and he had some hand bills and he handed them out everywhere and he put one on the side of the church door. 00:30:49.547 --> 00:30:53.230 This church is a church that's right there in Manhattan. 00:30:53.230 --> 00:30:59.469 That church still stands today and during 9-11, it's right across from the World Trade Center. 00:30:59.469 --> 00:31:04.606 When the World probably the most important election in our nation's history and that's when Abraham Lincoln won the presidency and he wanted to rid the country of slavery. 00:34:59.829 --> 00:35:11.568
