WEBVTT 00:00:00.561 --> 00:00:09.403 I've been excited about this topic now for a little while and I wanted to just go back to a basic good meat and Potatoes message for you. 00:00:09.403 --> 00:00:14.054 It's called the rod of God, and you'll see what I mean in just a minute. 00:00:14.054 --> 00:00:16.667 You know Jesus and John 10. 00:00:16.667 --> 00:00:23.559 He says I'm the, I'm the good shepherd, and I lay down my life for the sheep, and so Jesus is a good shepherd. 00:00:23.559 --> 00:00:25.967 The word also calls him a great shepherd. 00:00:25.967 --> 00:00:35.618 It also, first Peter 5, says he's a chief shepherd, and so our God, our Jesus, is a shepherd and he is trustworthy. 00:00:35.618 --> 00:00:38.728 And and what do shepherds always have? 00:00:38.728 --> 00:00:46.472 They have a rod, and and in the Old Testament, the rod in a. 00:00:46.472 --> 00:01:01.700 First of all, let me just establish that the rod, whenever you see it mentioned in the word, it is a symbol of the actual word of God, the measuring standard by which we can know our lives. 00:01:01.700 --> 00:01:06.849 Either they measure up to that word or they don't, and it's so comforting to know. 00:01:06.849 --> 00:01:12.858 And so the rod of God is actually his word as we apply it in our life. 00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:21.620 And, and I'm gonna give you so, in the Old Testament, for example, you remember Moses and Moses, god, gave him a rod. 00:01:21.620 --> 00:01:28.167 He had a rod and then it was a rod of miracles, right, because he could throw it down in front of Pharaoh. 00:01:28.167 --> 00:01:35.066 Pharaoh would say prove to me that God sent you, why should I let your people go out of slavery? 00:01:35.066 --> 00:01:44.230 And and Moses threw his rod down and it became a snake and Remember, and so it was a, it was a sign and a wonder. 00:01:44.230 --> 00:01:55.439 And then, and then there was a, and then his brother Aaron, moses, his brother Aaron, also had a rod, and Later we know that that rod actually sprout. 00:01:55.439 --> 00:02:07.299 It was, even though it was a cut-off part of a trunk of a tree or something, or a branch of a tree, but it later it grew other branches on it, even though it was cut off, and it began to bud. 00:02:07.299 --> 00:02:11.675 And and so that was a, that was a sign and a wonder. 00:02:11.675 --> 00:02:15.947 So a rod could be a In the hands of God. 00:02:15.947 --> 00:02:18.110 It could be actually a miracle worker. 00:02:18.412 --> 00:02:24.524 Working rod the shepherd as a, as a routine thing. 00:02:24.524 --> 00:02:39.960 The shepherd never went anywhere without his rod, and his rod was also called the staff because it had A crook at the end, and so he would use that rod To gently guide his sheep to pull them back into the right place. 00:02:39.960 --> 00:02:51.651 He would also use the other end of that rod to beat off the enemy, to say no, no, not my sheep, no, wolf, you get away. 00:02:51.651 --> 00:02:54.520 You get away, lion, bear, go away. 00:02:54.520 --> 00:02:57.207 And so they had that rod with them. 00:02:57.207 --> 00:03:03.701 So it was a rod of protection and it was also a rod of numbering. 00:03:03.823 --> 00:03:15.592 It was literally, if you had a giant Flock of sheep and you're a shepherd and you've got to continually count those sheep to make sure they're still there, how many of you are teachers or you've ever? 00:03:15.592 --> 00:03:16.800 Maybe you're a bus driver? 00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:25.711 I remember, just in children's ministry and youth ministry over the years, if ever we rented a bus to go anywhere, I was constantly counting those kids. 00:03:25.711 --> 00:03:26.763 Where are they? 00:03:26.763 --> 00:03:32.064 I, even though I knew their names, even though I pretty much had a sense of who was there, I was counting them. 00:03:32.064 --> 00:03:35.060 Are all 28 kids here in the bus? 00:03:35.060 --> 00:03:36.387 One, two, three, four, five? 00:03:36.387 --> 00:03:37.533 And I'm counting them again. 00:03:37.533 --> 00:03:39.521 And every time we went on a stop I'd count them again. 00:03:39.521 --> 00:03:40.264 I count them again. 00:03:40.305 --> 00:03:52.460 Well, this the, the shepherds rod would be they would pass the sheep under their rod and count them one, two, three and you were numbered among that flock if you passed under the rod. 00:03:52.460 --> 00:04:06.724 And we are numbered among the flock of God when we pass under his word, when we put ourselves in subjection to his awesome commandments, his statutes, his Precepts, his, his testimonies. 00:04:06.724 --> 00:04:08.326 There are delights. 00:04:08.326 --> 00:04:10.550 On 1, 19 says they are. 00:04:10.550 --> 00:04:15.844 They make us wiser than our teachers because there are delight. 00:04:15.844 --> 00:04:27.382 And so that is a, that is a symbol of God's rod is his word, and I can prove that in scripture, if you turn with me to Isaiah 11. 00:04:27.382 --> 00:04:43.692 It says, in verse one, there shall come forth a rod, capital R, capital R should come forth, a rod from the stem of Jesse and a branch shall grow out of his roots. 00:04:43.692 --> 00:04:45.115 Who is it talking about? 00:04:45.115 --> 00:04:45.877 Jesus? 00:04:45.877 --> 00:04:50.045 Jesus is from the lineage of David and Jesse was David's dad. 00:04:50.045 --> 00:05:04.045 So it was talking about Jesus, and the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. 00:05:04.826 --> 00:05:23.064 And I wanted to hit that tonight about the fear of the Lord, because I feel like in this culture that we have, and even the way I was raised Now, the generation above me was raised, my dad's generation, my mom's generation they were raised with a very healthy fear of the Lord, maybe a little bit harsh on the fear of the Lord. 00:05:23.064 --> 00:05:28.672 You know, god is mean and angry at you all the time and he's waiting to punish you for your sin. 00:05:28.672 --> 00:05:38.064 And so then in my generation the pendulum swung way over here and people said, oh no, god's not mad at you, and that's true. 00:05:38.064 --> 00:05:42.247 But we had this whole. 00:05:42.247 --> 00:05:45.610 Jesus is my homeboy, he's my best friend. 00:05:45.610 --> 00:05:47.252 You know, those are good. 00:05:48.173 --> 00:05:58.401 But when Jesus is not, when we do not reverence his word, when we don't put it first place, when we just treat it any old way, then we have a problem. 00:05:58.401 --> 00:06:00.726 We don't have that fear of the Lord. 00:06:00.726 --> 00:06:03.992 And then in verse three it says his delight is in the fear of the Lord. 00:06:03.992 --> 00:06:06.055 It's talking about Jesus again. 00:06:06.055 --> 00:06:17.252 And he shall not judge by the side of his eyes, nor decide by the hearing of his ears, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor and decide with equity the meek of the earth. 00:06:17.252 --> 00:06:25.872 He shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth Everybody say rod of his mouth, so and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. 00:06:25.872 --> 00:06:28.259 Okay, well, there's some fear of the Lord right now. 00:06:28.259 --> 00:06:31.064 Right there, he does still judge wickedness. 00:06:31.064 --> 00:06:40.045 God still is good and he hates evil, and he calls on us to love what is good and hate what is evil wherever we find it. 00:06:40.045 --> 00:06:57.384 It's easy to hate the evil that we see out there in the world, but what we need to do sometimes is turn ourselves, you know, in, to look inward and say what, what evil thing is trying to take my life over, what evil thing have I struggled with? 00:06:57.384 --> 00:07:01.836 And I'm going to hate that thing and I'm going to drive it out with the rod of God. 00:07:01.836 --> 00:07:06.170 So Jesus is that rod, he is the word made flesh. 00:07:06.170 --> 00:07:10.694 John 1, 14 says he's the word made flesh. 00:07:10.694 --> 00:07:15.399 So if Jesus is a rod, then his, then he is that word, the word is a rod. 00:07:15.399 --> 00:07:16.982 Did I make that case good enough? 00:07:31.291 --> 00:07:35.439 That's your favorite burst of the Bible, that's your favorite chapter of the Bible? 00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:40.411 Many of you, I guess we'd have to have a big arm wrestling competition, some people would say. 00:07:40.411 --> 00:07:44.399 And maybe in you, if you're on Facebook, you can tell me what's your favorite chapter of the Bible. 00:07:44.399 --> 00:07:47.747 Some of you right now are saying Romans 8. 00:07:47.747 --> 00:07:49.790 You're saying Romans 8. 00:07:49.790 --> 00:08:00.341 You're saying, oh, ephesians, maybe Ephesians one or two, but Psalm 23 is a strong contender for people's favorite verse. 00:08:01.165 --> 00:08:01.586 And what is all? 00:08:01.586 --> 00:08:02.487 What is that about? 00:08:02.487 --> 00:08:05.293 That's about Jesus being our great shepherd. 00:08:05.293 --> 00:08:07.156 The Lord is your shepherd. 00:08:07.156 --> 00:08:08.137 You shall not want. 00:08:08.137 --> 00:08:08.858 And what does he do? 00:08:08.858 --> 00:08:14.312 He leads you in paths of righteousness for his namesake. 00:08:14.312 --> 00:08:15.834 He guides you. 00:08:15.834 --> 00:08:20.740 He leads you beside the still waters, in the green pastures. 00:08:20.740 --> 00:08:33.812 He shows you with his gentle rod and his staff hey, come over here and eat over here in this field is safe to eat here, and I've got my staff here, I'm going to keep away the predators, and so eat over here. 00:08:33.812 --> 00:08:36.416 And then what does he do? 00:08:36.416 --> 00:08:38.398 He restores our soul. 00:08:38.398 --> 00:08:47.107 He restores our soul, our minds, literally the way we think. 00:08:47.107 --> 00:08:56.216 Our soul or our way of thinking can get so polluted and mixed up and confused and discouraged and just living in this world. 00:08:56.216 --> 00:09:04.544 We need Jesus, the great shepherd, to restore our soul, to bring us, guide us back into the green pasture. 00:09:04.544 --> 00:09:06.206 And so that's what he does. 00:09:06.206 --> 00:09:07.668 He is faithful to do that. 00:09:08.488 --> 00:09:13.131 And then it says his rod and his staff comfort me. 00:09:13.131 --> 00:09:28.668 So when we submit to his shepherding heart, when we put ourselves again in under the rod of his shepherd, his staff and his shepherd's rod, then we have comfort. 00:09:28.668 --> 00:09:32.051 Your rod and your staff comfort me. 00:09:32.051 --> 00:09:33.432 If we really dig through there. 00:09:33.432 --> 00:09:39.918 It's the rod, knowing that he's beating off the enemy, he's beating off the predators. 00:09:39.918 --> 00:09:41.559 So we have that comfort. 00:09:41.559 --> 00:09:46.065 His staff is guiding us and leading us where we should be. 00:09:46.065 --> 00:09:49.847 So that's comforting, knowing where that but. 00:09:49.847 --> 00:09:51.369 But it's but the whole. 00:09:51.369 --> 00:09:57.533 All of it is in the context of I'm this happy sheep and I'm with my shepherd. 00:09:57.533 --> 00:09:59.956 I have his presence with me. 00:09:59.956 --> 00:10:02.658 It is his rod and his staff and that comforts me. 00:10:02.658 --> 00:10:11.065 I've got my shepherd and I love him and he loves me and he cares for my wounds and he feeds me, leads me, guards me, and he's my shepherd. 00:10:11.065 --> 00:10:17.955 And so there's that loving comfort that we have with Jesus, with his rod and his staff. 00:10:19.277 --> 00:10:34.900 And so when I dial back, you know, a long time ago my dad heard from the Lord and he said there's a dearth of the word or a famine in the word, in other words. 00:10:34.900 --> 00:10:37.046 And then God said God, follow it up. 00:10:37.046 --> 00:10:39.932 Your kids don't know what you know. 00:10:39.932 --> 00:10:47.905 In other words, the next generation does not know what the baby boomers knew we can make fun of the boomers sometimes. 00:10:47.905 --> 00:11:03.323 But they know some stuff because some things in their culture that they were brought up around, that were ingrained in them, were not ingrained in my culture and certainly not in the cultures below, in the generations following me. 00:11:03.323 --> 00:11:09.047 And what are those things? 00:11:09.047 --> 00:11:13.291 The more I live in this world, the more I come to realize that the things. 00:11:13.291 --> 00:11:20.323 And then, oh and then God told my dad teach what you take for granted, teach what you take for granted. 00:11:20.323 --> 00:11:26.890 So we've tried to go back, we try to dig the foundations of our faith and just show them. 00:11:26.890 --> 00:11:28.721 Bear to you, try to show them. 00:11:28.721 --> 00:11:30.586 But then I realized you know what? 00:11:30.586 --> 00:11:37.607 It's not enough to just teach you the things I was taught growing up in school or in church, in the word. 00:11:37.607 --> 00:11:48.567 Those things it's not enough to teach you because there are generations now who don't have the basic foundation of morality, even that used to be so ingrained in the culture. 00:11:49.399 --> 00:11:51.625 For example, I'm going to. 00:11:51.625 --> 00:11:58.385 I am going to tonight, for the first time in my life, I am going to teach you on the 10 Commandments. 00:11:58.385 --> 00:11:59.609 Because why? 00:11:59.609 --> 00:12:01.765 Because God said teach what you take for granted. 00:12:01.765 --> 00:12:06.971 And I think a lot of us have been taken the 10 Commandments for granted a long time. 00:12:06.971 --> 00:12:19.340 And here's how we do it we give ourselves license because we say, well, that's the Old Testament law and Jesus came and it's passed away and we don't exactly have to keep these 10 things. 00:12:19.340 --> 00:12:22.565 Well, you know what we do. 00:12:22.565 --> 00:12:35.649 We do have to keep them, because I'm going to make a case for that and then I'm going to, I'm going to try to do that quickly, but first of all, galatians 3, 24, you can turn there if you want. 00:12:37.340 --> 00:12:46.614 Paul says, therefore, the law was our tutor or our school teacher to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 00:12:46.614 --> 00:12:54.433 So we say, we like to say, I'm justified by faith, not of works, lest any man should boast my salvation is not of works, it's a faith. 00:12:54.433 --> 00:12:57.320 It's a faith I don't have to do anything for God. 00:12:57.320 --> 00:13:09.153 But no, no, paul saying right here yes, we're still going to listen to our school teacher, we're still going to do what that school teacher, because that law brought us to Jesus. 00:13:09.153 --> 00:13:14.557 And and it does say, after faith has come, we're no longer under a tutor. 00:13:14.557 --> 00:13:16.861 That's true, jesus said. 00:13:16.861 --> 00:13:18.966 He said the. 00:13:19.046 --> 00:13:30.340 The commandment that he gave was to love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and soul and mind and strength, and to love your neighbor as you, as you love yourself. 00:13:30.340 --> 00:13:33.309 Love, it's the law of love. 00:13:33.309 --> 00:13:41.299 That is the law that we are now living under in this New Testament dispensation that all of us, when we come, we get born again. 00:13:41.299 --> 00:13:49.456 We put our faith in Jesus, we believe his blood has washed our sins and so we are now saved, born again, children of God. 00:13:49.456 --> 00:13:54.279 The old things are passed away Second Corinthians, 5, 17 and behold, all things have become new. 00:13:54.279 --> 00:13:55.875 So that's great. 00:13:55.875 --> 00:13:56.340 We love that. 00:13:56.340 --> 00:13:57.985 But guess what? 00:16:54.013 --> 00:16:55.080 That's Galatians 3.13. 00:16:55.080 --> 00:16:56.159 It says that. 00:16:56.159 --> 00:16:59.000 But now I've got to apply that in. 00:16:59.000 --> 00:17:04.112 If my granddaddy worshiped an idol, I can. 00:17:04.112 --> 00:17:09.700 I've now got to actively apply Galatians 3.13 in my life, because the devil is a lawbreaker. 00:17:09.700 --> 00:17:17.119 He will come in and he will exact payment for that, according to this, and he's applying the wrong thing and he's illegal in doing that. 00:17:17.119 --> 00:17:21.680 But he can still wreak some misery in my life if I don't know his plans right. 00:17:21.680 --> 00:17:23.109 So I have to. 00:17:23.109 --> 00:17:32.159 I have to apply the word, I have to use my faith to believe God that I'm free of that curse of idolatry and I'm certainly not passing it to my kids. 00:17:32.159 --> 00:17:36.039 Amen, all right, okay, so that was one and two Don't bow the knee. 00:17:36.119 --> 00:17:37.048 One, god, don't bow the knee. 00:17:37.048 --> 00:17:40.730 And then number three you shall not, as a verse. 00:17:40.730 --> 00:17:47.140 Seven you shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 00:17:47.140 --> 00:17:53.053 So the third commandment is don't take the name of the Lord in vain. 00:17:53.053 --> 00:17:56.636 And so we always think about that. 00:17:56.636 --> 00:17:58.566 Well, you know, we don't. 00:17:58.566 --> 00:18:01.700 We don't use his name as a cuss word, and that's true. 00:18:01.700 --> 00:18:02.740 We should never do that. 00:18:03.246 --> 00:18:04.298 But it's deeper than this. 00:18:04.298 --> 00:18:22.615 I heard a rabbi say this that taking the name of the Lord's in vain is actually more like using his name, his name, to justify something you did out of your flesh or out of sin, but you, but you attributed it to God. 00:18:22.615 --> 00:18:31.391 In other words, I'm going to do this ugly thing, I'm going to do the self dealing thing and I'm going to say, oh, but it's because God, god, god, god, god. 00:18:31.391 --> 00:18:32.945 And I'm going to. 00:18:32.945 --> 00:18:43.176 And so think of how many arm, how many evil kings of the world have have overtaken helpless lands, you know all. 00:18:43.176 --> 00:18:51.053 Because, oh, god wants me to have this land and I will take it and I will kill these millions of people, but God told me to. 00:18:51.053 --> 00:18:53.641 So then it makes God look bad. 00:18:53.641 --> 00:18:55.873 You didn't do that for God. 00:18:55.873 --> 00:18:57.896 You did that because you wanted that land. 00:18:57.896 --> 00:19:00.202 You did that for your pride, you did that for you. 00:19:00.630 --> 00:19:04.461 And how many times do we see people do that, that they misapply the word of God? 00:19:04.461 --> 00:19:06.914 And even Christians do this sometimes. 00:19:06.914 --> 00:19:11.804 And we use the name, we take the name of the Lord in vain, and we should not do that. 00:19:11.804 --> 00:19:14.214 And you know what?
