Cold Open & Puppy News

SPEAKER_00

Here's what to expect on this week's episode of the River Morning Show Weekly Podcast. A gush of quote unquote water drops from the sky and splatters all over Chris's hand and suitcase. It was pigeon poo. And then what comes around goes around, Josh. Did Chris poop on a pigeon?

SPEAKER_03

Thanks for pressing play on this here podcast here. You can find more when you click on demand at riverradio.com. And I have one question for you. Okay. On a scale of one to ten. How excited are you?

SPEAKER_00

A billion, zillion, a trillion.

Would You Rather: Hop or Waddle

SPEAKER_03

This is really, really a big day.

SPEAKER_00

Because I'm getting a puppy.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so as of this recording, Hannah is going to Kentucky with her husband. You guys are getting a human-sized dog. Yes, he'll be. Or at least he'll eventually be.

SPEAKER_00

He'll eventually be 140-ish pounds.

SPEAKER_03

What kind of dog is it?

SPEAKER_00

He's called a greater Swiss mountain dog. So if you've seen a Bernice mountain dog before, it's the same family, just the bigger, less furry version.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, but still is gonna shed. I mean long hair, but just short hair, but have hair everywhere.

SPEAKER_00

Just as much shedding. Just be ready. I'm gonna be covered in gray fur from fish and now black and brown fur from bear.

SPEAKER_03

You know, if you get a lint roller and you somehow find a way to get that fur off the tape, you could make clothing.

SPEAKER_00

Are you trying to be Cruella de Ville right now? I don't like where this is going, Cruella Deville.

SPEAKER_03

Cruella de guy in this attic that's playing the trombone in that movie. He is a controversy-starting pot stirring troublemaker, otherwise known as producer Mike. Would you rather?

SPEAKER_02

Alright, so for today's Would You Rather, the question is: for an entire day, would you rather, instead of being able to walk or run, hop like a rabbit or waddle like a duck?

SPEAKER_03

Interesting. Ladies first, Hannah, what would you prefer? Hop like a rabbit or waddle like a duck?

SPEAKER_00

I think I'd rather hop like a rabbit. Yeah, yeah. I mean, think about the workout. That'd be such a good day. Well earned. Your legs, your core, your glutes, that'd be a great workout. Your calves would be screaming. Your calves? Yeah, and I feel like that would move faster. Waddling sounds pretty slow.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. What about you, Josh? So I just turned 46. Uh-huh. My knees do not like the idea of hopping everywhere. I will waddle like a duck. Now I know it may look like I'm fast walking like those Olympians.

SPEAKER_00

I love that for you.

SPEAKER_03

Also, it will simultaneously look like I am shaking what my mama gave me. I don't want to do that. Yeah, you're going with waddling like a dick. I'm going with waddling like a duck because I would be in so much pain if I was hopping around here.

SPEAKER_00

Well, okay, so what if, let's, let's play if we're playing this new world.

SPEAKER_03

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_00

What if your knees weren't hurting and it was an optimal day. You had a great, great day. Your body's feeling fine. Ducks. Would you rather hop like a rabbit or waddle like a duck?

SPEAKER_03

Ducks seem happier than rabbits. I think I'd still waddle. I'd still waddle.

SPEAKER_00

Still be those fast walkers.

SPEAKER_03

Get where I'm going. No problem at all. So the question now, since Hannah and I on our either side of this, would you rather hop like a rabbit or waddle like a duck?

SPEAKER_00

That's ridiculous, producer Mike. Yes.

SPEAKER_03

You can blame it so much. Blame producer Mike for this. Call or text 800-609-1049.

SPEAKER_00

Would you rather what did you set up for us today, producer Mike?

SPEAKER_02

So today, we're deciding between for an entire day only hopping like a rabbit or waddling like a duck. My knees can't handle it.

SPEAKER_00

Which, okay, that's fair. I mean, you did just have your birthday and you admitted that your knees hurt. Oh, they do.

SPEAKER_03

And you work out like five days a week or whatever. You could do the hopping.

SPEAKER_00

And that's what I was thinking. Like, what a good calf and like leg workout to hop for a day.

SPEAKER_03

Plus, if I were a waddling duck, people would just toss bread at me. This is such a win. I didn't even think about that.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think if you are a human waddling like a duck. No, it's okay. People are gonna be like, are you okay?

SPEAKER_03

Maybe they'd take me somewhere that has they would take me somewhere that has bread.

SPEAKER_00

This is a win. Aren't you not supposed to feed ducks bread? Isn't that a thing? It's like bad for their tummies. Hannah. Or is it rice?

SPEAKER_03

Probably both. Don't ruin it. You're not supposed to throw rice at weddings anymore. I know. Because of the birds. That's what it was. Exactly. Anyway.

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, here I waddle.

SPEAKER_03

Hannah's hopping around like a jackrabbit.

SPEAKER_00

So we're on opposite sides here. Producer Mike, has anybody chimed in?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Katie said that she would definitely rather hop like a rabbit. Yay! Five minutes of waddling like a duck, and we're falling all over when we can't feel our feet. Was her reasoning.

SPEAKER_05

I'm waddling in place right now just to see.

SPEAKER_02

You keep going. I'll do it throughout this entire conversation. He really is. Enjoy five minutes of that until you can't feel your feet.

SPEAKER_05

Alright.

SPEAKER_02

We'll see. Amy said, I took some flowers to a house only to be chased by two guard ducks that turned out to be pets. And that inspired me to pick waddling like a duck.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I would have thought she wanted the rabbit.

SPEAKER_03

Apparently, waddling is a little more intimidating than a mountain rabbit.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, and also, who has pet ducks? That's amazing. Can we be friends? Are you in Ohio? It is very cool. I want that.

SPEAKER_02

I did have some neighbors uh back when I lived in Maryland that had ducks, and I had to watch out for them whenever I rode my bike past their head.

SPEAKER_00

So is that two to two right now? It is. Do we have a tiebreaker?

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

Then it comes down to you, producer mic. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Would you rather hop like a rabbit or water like a duck? And before you answer, do you realize how ridiculous this is that you're making us answer this crazy you go?

SPEAKER_02

What? And now it comes back to me. Yeah. So I feel like I gotta go with hop like a rabbit.

SPEAKER_05

Now it's time to celebrate.

SPEAKER_02

So in all the different places I've lived, and it's been a lot of them, I've lived in like five different states. Why are you moving around so much, producer Mike? Um, college, my dad's job, uh, internships, okay, going all over the place. These are actually good reasons, alright. I I'm glad that you agree. I approve. Um But in all of these different places, there's never been that one thing that really brings the community together. Then I moved to Ohio and I realized how much people love their Buckeyes. Oh, absolutely, yes! Absolutely! So my roommate and I were getting dinner in Easton the other day, and we were I was asking him questions because he's a big Buckeyes fan, but I had no idea. I was like, who like who's on the Buckeyes, who's good, like why are they good? Like, all of this stuff.

SPEAKER_00

I'm glad you're asking questions. That's good. That's good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I wanted to I wanted to be involved, you know. And the first way to fix a problem is to acknowledge you have a problem. Yes, and your problem was lack of buckeye knowledge.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, that's good.

SPEAKER_02

Um, and so while we're talking, this dude comes up to us, never seen him before, probably will never see him again. Okay, and he just starts talking buckeyes with us. Yes. We're talking about the game that's coming up, we're talking about like whether we think they're gonna win, all of this kind of stuff. And we just talk for like five minutes, just all about the buckeyes. And then he just leaves and's like, go buckeyes.

SPEAKER_00

Out of your life forever, but that moment implanted for a lifetime.

SPEAKER_02

Well, say, out of your life forever, in your heart forever. Yeah, there we go. Like, we'll always be stuck with that guy. Yeah, and I was just like, this is actually like really cool, just how much people bond over the buckeyes in Ohio, because that's not a thing in other states.

SPEAKER_03

I want to put you on the spot. What's something that you learned from that conversation?

SPEAKER_02

So I learned about some of the players. Okay. Um, and about how good Jeremiah Smith is. Yes. Yes, love it. And we we talked about uh the quarterback as well, sayin. Yeah, Julian Sayon. Yeah, and how he's been he's been kind of rocking it this year. Absolutely. He's been cooking.

Lake Como Plans Fail, Joy Prevails

SPEAKER_00

And he we didn't even declare him as our quarterback till pretty late in August, right?

SPEAKER_03

A couple weeks to go before the season, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Look at him, doing his thing.

SPEAKER_03

Mike, I'm proud of you for connecting with strangers because I'd never do it. Not even over the bucket. I don't think so.

SPEAKER_00

If somebody approached you, yes, you would. Okay. You wouldn't be the guy approaching.

SPEAKER_03

At the very least, we could end any awkward conversation with OH!

SPEAKER_04

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Your worst morning can turn into your favorite day. When my husband and I were in Italy, our very last stop was Lake Como. We'd been dreaming about this spot the entire trip. We had the whole day planned out. We'd ferry to all the different towns on the water, get lunch in one, walk the historical spots of another, get coffee with George Clooney, obviously.

SPEAKER_03

And it's a it's a big lake, right? Like massive. Wasn't sure how large that was.

SPEAKER_00

Bunch of towns all throughout this this lake.

SPEAKER_03

Got it. Amazing.

SPEAKER_00

We even had dinner reservations and dessert planned at the last stop before catching our train.

SPEAKER_03

Wow.

SPEAKER_00

But let me tell you, Italy does not run on American time.

SPEAKER_03

Oh no.

SPEAKER_00

What happened? Oh no! We stood in that first ferry line for almost two hours, hot, tired, so cranky, and right when we were finally about five people from the front, they slapped a big ol' sign to the window. All fairies sold out for the day.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, you serious? It is like a Charlie Brown move.

SPEAKER_00

And you can't buy tickets ahead of time. It's like you, it's a stand-in-line option only.

SPEAKER_03

First come, first serve, and best of luck to you.

SPEAKER_00

The morning was ruined. So we grabbed lunch, still fuming, still just like sitting there staring out over the water at our dead dreams. And then Chris looks at me and goes, We don't need a ferry.

SPEAKER_03

Is he gonna swim it?

SPEAKER_00

He walks off and rents a little speed boat for the two of us to take out on the lake, just us. Oh, nice! So no crowds, no schedule, just winding between the mountains on the water.

SPEAKER_03

Wow, hubby's the hero.

SPEAKER_00

I know. So it wasn't it wasn't the same experience, it was different, but there was sunshine and quiet and God's beauty everywhere. That ruined morning turned into our favorite day of the whole trip. No way, for real.

SPEAKER_03

It's incredible. Yeah, that's so good.

SPEAKER_00

So if your morning feels rough today, no matter what you're going through, don't let it decide the rest of your day. God might be rerouting you towards something even better.

SPEAKER_03

She's back!

SPEAKER_05

Hannah is right!

SPEAKER_03

Everything is right with the world. I don't have to deal with that producer Mike anymore. I'm kidding. He's right here. He's right here. Name Mike. You're the best, man. Thanks for all your help last week. Of course, even though you just insulted me. I know I did. I know I did. Hannah is back. Welcome, friend.

Pigeons, Travel Mishaps, and Humor

SPEAKER_00

Thanks. It's good to be home. Something I learned recently is that pigeons are truly rats with wings. Yeah. Yeah. You you didn't know that before? Well, because I would have thought before my trip to Europe that all creatures are God's beautiful creation. And you know, they're kind of like a dove. So they're sweet, they're fine, they're just little birdies. No, no, no. Now they are dead to me. What happened? My husband and I got to the Munich train station at like 5 30 a.m. on a rainy morning, so we could head to our next stop in Switzerland. And as we are racing to the train with massive suitcases in tow, a gush of quote-unquote water drops from the sky and splatters all over Chris's hand and suitcase. And we both try to lie to ourselves for a second and say it was just a lot of rain. Because remember, it was a rainy day in Munich, Germany. It wasn't. It was pigeon poo.

SPEAKER_05

It was pigeon poo.

SPEAKER_03

Was that from was that from one pigeon?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we saw him, and we think he followed us around Germany from there on out. And trust me, I wanted to laugh so badly, but I held it together kind of. It was very poorly hidden laughter. And then what comes around goes around, Josh. Did Chris poop on a pigeon? Did he find one and hold it with the pigeon? You said what goes around comes around. It was about my laughter.

SPEAKER_01

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Because then we had taken a day trip to France, and the travel back on the bus was so long, we were exhausted. We got back so late. They drop us off about a mile away from the hotel. So we're hoofing it in the dark. And I'm walking under this tree when Chris goes, ew, look at all the pigeon poo on the sidewalk. And as I look down, Josh, I get hit from above. Pigeon poo on my head. It was in my head. And pigeons are rats with wings. They are dead to me.

SPEAKER_03

Hannah's back and better than how was traversing Europe while the rest of us were stuck here in Ohio?

SPEAKER_00

It was so good. I mean, we were so blessed to be able to do that. And we learned a lot about ourselves while we were there. You know when you're supposed to step into these places and they're just supposed to take your breath away. So we we toured these jaw-droppingly beautiful, these royal palaces and these fortresses, and we wandered through these old churches that like basically just invented history, right? Like the foundation that we stand on. And we tried so hard to be those kind of people who just could really appreciate the art and culture. We wanted that for ourselves. But gosh, we're not those people. Not even close. Instead, we found ourselves staring at these portraits that are hundreds of years old and these sculptures and whispering things like, he looks like he just tooted. You did not. We did. You did. And then there's this guy where we just think he looks like he's yelling, Mom, he's touching me. And that's what we did. We went to each one of these places and said, That guy looks like he's holding it in.

SPEAKER_03

You uncultured swine.

SPEAKER_00

That's what we kept saying for ourselves. Every time we came up with something, we'd say, We are so uncultured.

SPEAKER_03

You're everything wrong with America.

SPEAKER_00

But we had a great time.

SPEAKER_03

I'm so glad.

SPEAKER_00

I'm so glad.

A Dad, a Son, and College Clarity

SPEAKER_03

You know, sometimes it takes an outsider to really help you understand your child. I'm not talking about a counselor or a pastor, although they might be able to help you understand your child. I'm talking about a buddy of mine who asked a simple question. So here's the scenario. I spent nine hours in the car driving to and from this cross-country meet. Well, my oldest son, Drew, is injured, so he can't run, but he's still on the team. So he and I drove all that way, and a friend of mine, who's the dad of a friend of my son. So we all know each other, and we're like, this would be silly to have two cars going all this way. Sure. So we're just bebopping along, and he pipes up and asks Drew, my son, about his college plans. And wouldn't you know, Drew gives more information to this guy than any I have heard in the last year. So I knew, like he, my son has visited Malone College in Canton, but that's really it. He was on the campus of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, where I went for like a thing, but it was with a million other high school seniors. So it really wasn't a visit. Next Tuesday, he's going to visit Ohio University.

SPEAKER_00

Nice.

SPEAKER_03

And that's all I knew. He started talking about his thought process through this whole thing of how he's visited small Christian college. He wants to visit big state schools.

SPEAKER_00

Compare.

SPEAKER_03

And he wants to visit several in between. He's like, I don't want to just get on one campus and be like, yeah, I like it. And then that's it. That's good. There's money to think about. Do they have the right degree stuff?

SPEAKER_00

And he's saying all that.

SPEAKER_03

This is my son.

unknown

Wow.

SPEAKER_00

And you've not heard any of that before.

SPEAKER_03

No. I've been terrified this whole time of like, does he even know what he's thinking? And I know a lot of high school seniors wouldn't. And that's okay if he doesn't, but I'm secretly hoping, please, Jesus, let him have a plan. And he does. He knows what he's looking for.

SPEAKER_00

But it took somebody else asking. Yes. For you to find this all out.

Windowless Jets and Flight Preferences

SPEAKER_03

While we were running around the cross country course trying to see our sons in the race and all of this, I told him, I was like, thank you for asking that. That is more information than I have gotten. And I have point blank asked him, what are you thinking? What are you doing? Like, not in a pressure way, but just let your old man know.

SPEAKER_00

Like there's something about talking to your parents when they ask you a question. It's just innate to go, oh.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. It's like it's fine. It's not fine. So maybe if you can't get anything out of your kids in an important decision, invite a friend over. Make them sit down with them in the living room. So what do you think about this? You might get the entire story in three minutes. News that'll make you go.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, wait, wait. What? Josh, what in this wild, wacky world did you find today?

SPEAKER_03

So you just flew a bunch. Yeah. Because you were in Europe and so you had multiple flights and things.

SPEAKER_00

Are you a window seat person or an aisle seat person? Aisle every single time. I'm claustrophobic. I need to know that I can get up and move and go somewhere.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I mean, if things go wrong, you're really close to the window to get out.

SPEAKER_00

Well, if you're in a window seat. If I need to go to the bathroom, I have to climb over people and I'm just stuck there. I need the aisle every time.

SPEAKER_03

I like a window seat, but now we've got to take luxury and gum everything up for those window seat lovers.

SPEAKER_05

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

A new in-development windowless private jet. No, why? Windowless. It's the flight of the future, they say. It's not just a metal tube. It's got digital screens all over, and from cameras outside the airplane, it shows you a 360-degree view of what is around you.

SPEAKER_00

Do you just feel like you're floating in the sky?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'm in shock. But it's digital. I know, but how would I feel about that? Either that I'm falling the whole time or that would help my claustrophobia a lot.

“Educated Battles” in Marriage

SPEAKER_03

I I don't I wouldn't want to be looking at a screen the whole time. I just make bigger windows, is what I would say.

SPEAKER_00

I can't decide.

SPEAKER_03

As somebody who likes the actual window. If it works and the company turns a massive profit, they hope to create larger jet liners with similar technology that you and I would fly in. Because you and I aren't doing the private jet thing, at least not yet. No. The river's not big enough. Is it wrong to hope a company fails? Because I kind of hope this company fails.

SPEAKER_00

No, Josh. Every couple has their thing. Like some couples are super mushy. Some finish each other's sentences. And then and then there are couples like me and my husband. Maybe this is you two. Um, we got back from two weeks together in Europe. So, you know, two whole weeks nonstop, side by side. Right, right, yeah. And one day I just kind of blurted out, do we bicker too much? And honestly, without even blinking, he goes, No, we have educated battles to keep each other sharp.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my goodness. He's been thinking of that reply.

SPEAKER_00

I guess. I was just like, oh, cool, cool, cool, coo, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it. And it honestly did make me feel so much better because I am often the instigator. And I realized maybe I'm pestering too much.

SPEAKER_03

It sounds about right though.

SPEAKER_00

You would be, you'd be the picker, just a little bit. Well, he he picks to purposely annoy. I I pick because I'm already annoyed. So it's like this this cycle, you know?

SPEAKER_05

Wow.

SPEAKER_00

I know, I know. But the quick response that no, we have educated battles. I felt so relieved. Like, okay, he sees this and doesn't think this is annoying. It's just a part of the fun that we have. We don't end an educated battle mad at each other.

SPEAKER_03

That's good. That's a really good point. What was his tone when he said, no, we just have educated battles? Was it that one? Oh, it was like that?

Bridging Division with Jesus’ Way

SPEAKER_00

That.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so I that's good. Because if he had said it a different way, it would have been just like a woman saying, No, it's fine. Because you would have known that. It ain't fine.

SPEAKER_00

No, it was very like, this is just who we are. It's great. Like, I enjoy this. It's kind of our love language, challenging each other, keeping each other on our toes. And so maybe that's an encouragement for you today. Whatever your thing is, that silly, quirky, only you two get it thing, embrace it. It may just be what makes you two you.

Visiting vs Abiding: Practical Faith

Live Listening Invite & Wrap

SPEAKER_03

This is a tough world to live in if you don't like the uh if you don't like the conflict. Uh why does it have to be one side or the other on every single issue? You know, I realize nobody likes a compromise, and that's not what I'm getting at, but we are as a nation, as a society, there is a deep divide between two sides on any given issue. It's specifically us, and it seems we're only growing further apart. So, what do we do about this division among us as people? I'm not talking about heal the nation, I'm talking about relationships, I'm talking about human beings and getting along with each other. There's a wedge there, so how do we remove it? Now I have found the best advice is to look at Jesus. I don't care what you're dealing with, look to him. So, what Jesus did when he was here in a very divided society, he welcomed, he invited, he included, he talked and shared, he prayed with, he ate with, he walked with. When's the last time I or you invited someone from the other side to sit down and have a meal with you, to go to coffee. Not to tell them why they're wrong, but just to be with them. One thing you'll notice, though, um, about Jesus, and this is where it gets kind of mushy and interesting for you and me, he didn't condone what was wrong in somebody's life. But he never told the broken they were completely whole. Instead, he he spoke the truth to them and he showed his love. And so no one could confuse his correction with anger. Instead, they could see that he was doing that and saying what he said because he loved somebody. So maybe just maybe for you and me, because we're not God and we can't get it perfect. Maybe today, let's make a plan to invite, include, share, pray with, and speak truth in the kindest way possible. Now, some questions are silly, some questions are important, some questions just stop you right in your tracks. And you're like, wow, I really need to think about this one. At church, somebody asks the question, are you just visiting Jesus or are you abiding with him? I know, I know that's so abiding that's a weird Bible kind of word, but what's the difference? Visiting, as they talked about this, visiting is passing through, spending a moment. Abiding is staying with, it's living with. It's a day-to-day kind of thing, not a once-a-month kind of thing. And so then this next question is what hits you right between the eyes, but which one are you? Are you visiting with Jesus or are you abiding with Jesus? In the book of John in the Bible, right in the first chapter, Jesus starts to call his disciples to follow him. His new friends ask Jesus, where are you staying? And he said, Come and see. So he took them to visit where he was, and they stayed all that rest the rest of that day. That could have been the end of it, though. They could have said, Well, this was cool. Thanks for showing us your your place, your digs, and we will see you around the lake and uh on the streets of the of the town. Uh, but they didn't do that. The next day they found Jesus and hung with him again, and the next day, and the next and the next, and the world changed because they chose to abide, to stay with Jesus. So, in the lesson that this person talked about, here's how we in 2025 do this, because Jesus doesn't live right down the street, that we can go physically be with him every day. The first way they say was prayer that lingers. So when you say amen, it doesn't mean the conversation's over. It means you can pick that up anytime. Because Jesus is not like hanging up the phone and then you've got to call him again and hope that he answers. He's always right there. And the prayers don't have to be long and drawn out, it can be a brief moment. God give me wisdom, God help me, protect me. What do you want me to know about this? It's little conversations throughout the day. Another way to abide with Jesus is thinking throughout the day about the Bible verse. Maybe you read that that morning. Write it out on a three by five note card, keep it in front of you. Just look at it again, remember it. I loved this one too, then. Thank God, quote, at the sink. Thanking God in the little moments when you're doing the when I'm folding laundry for my family of six, and I'm going ras a frat and dana. He's like, no, no. I have a family that made all these dishes. I have a family who made all of this dirty laundry. It's things like that. This the the Sunday school teacher was talking about abiding, staying with Jesus. I guess the last one I mentioned was gathering with other believers, just being with each other. So if you didn't go to church this past weekend, no worries. Go this coming weekend. And between now and then, let's use some of these tips, as it were, to begin abiding with Jesus. He loves a visit, but he wants you to stay. Hey, you're invited to listen to the recording of this podcast live. How? Where? It's simple. You can share every weekday morning with Josh and Hannah on 1049 The River in Columbus, Ohio, or online at riverradio.com. It was a journey, but we've made it together. Thanks for listening to this episode of the River Morning Show weekly podcast.
