Cold Weather Comforts
SPEAKER_07Here's what to expect on this week's episode of the River Morning Show weekly podcast.
SPEAKER_03Spotify rapped has been released. They give you your listening age.
SPEAKER_07My husband and I'm Spotify account listening age is 68.
SPEAKER_03We are in our 30s. Did you feel the storm coming earlier this week, Hannah?
SPEAKER_08Money with Harden.
SPEAKER_03Thanks for hit and play on this podcast. You can find more when you click on demand at riverradio.com. Hannah, what is your go-to when it is cold like it's been as of this recording, single digits and wind chill? Go-to? Yeah, like to get warm.
SPEAKER_07Oh, well, of course I'm gonna get some hot cocoa. And I'm you're never gonna see me leave my weighted blanket on the couch.
SPEAKER_03Ah, weighted blanket. I've got one of those too. Mine does involve couch uh couches also, but it usually is me sitting on the couch, and then I hear this little jingle because it's my dog's collar as he jumps up next to me. And uh, as Charles Schultz, the creator of Peanuts, the comic strip, said, happiness is a warm puppy.
SPEAKER_07And your puppy is your heated blanket. Yes, he is.
Holiday Song Showdown
SPEAKER_03Would you rather? And producer Mike stirring the pot yet again. And normally I'd be fine with you stirring the pot if there was chili in it, but no. You never bring food, you always just cause problems. Chaos. So what is it today?
SPEAKER_02So today, I thought I'd bring a little holiday cheer to the show. This is just gonna be cheer on your part. Okay, fine. Exactly. Yeah. Would you rather listen to which one of these Christmas songs? The Muppets, 12 Days of Christmas.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02Or I want a hippopotamus for Christmas. Oh, like on a loop, like we just have to constantly listen to this whole thing over and over again for an entire day.
SPEAKER_07Whoa, well, I mean, that's extreme on either of those. I wanted it to escalate quickly. I think I know my choice.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I got mine too. I would pick the Muppets all day, every day. Really? Absolutely.
SPEAKER_07The Muppets.
SPEAKER_03I'm partial Muppet. Like, I was raised.
SPEAKER_07Now when you say that, I could see it. I could see it now. See? Yeah, why did I think about that? No, I think I would go with I want a hippopotamus.
SPEAKER_03You you would really want this all season or like for an entire day.
SPEAKER_08I want a hippopotamus on Christmas. Only a hippopotamus will do this.
SPEAKER_03This is the last thing I want to experience.
SPEAKER_08I think it's a funny. I cannot play with them and you're picking this over.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so that was Johnny.
SPEAKER_08Do you realize how many birds are in this song?
SPEAKER_03It's Kermit. It doesn't get any better than Kermit. It's gone, so come on!
SPEAKER_07I don't know. I just feel like this one would make me go to bed at night and just see numbers in my head. Yeah, well, this one would make me see an enormous fat angel. I just love how nasally she is.
SPEAKER_03Do you know how dangerous hippopotamuses are?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, they're very scary, so have fun.
SPEAKER_03Alright. I don't know who wins. Probably everybody probably everybody loses. Um, so you can at least share what you would rather if you had to all day listen to this.
SPEAKER_04Yay! What is this?
SPEAKER_03What is this? Click it!
SPEAKER_07On the first day. See, the fact that that didn't start tells me it should be hippopotamus.
SPEAKER_03Could have done without that. Alright, uh 800-609-1049. Producer Mike has put this before us today, and once again, Hannah and I are fighting. But it's like the cat fight. Like just the flapping hands.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because Producer Mike put it uh put it to us this way. Would you rather listen to this song all day on a loop?
SPEAKER_08I wanna hip the bottom as a gris.
SPEAKER_03And every time Hannah starts singing a ball bad. Would you like to listen to this song on a loop all day?
SPEAKER_07On the first day of Christmas. Okay, but wait for it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's just John Denver.
SPEAKER_07It's not bad.
SPEAKER_08And then it's Kermit! The Muppet's version of the 12 days of Christmas. Gonzo's next!
SPEAKER_01Gonzo's next. Yes!
SPEAKER_07I'm just entertained because of how entertained you are.
SPEAKER_03So fun. It's so funny.
SPEAKER_07I think that hippopotamus is just so much funnier.
SPEAKER_03I can't stand the idea. As a parent, no. Like you, I never had the kid who wanted the pony for Christmas. A hippopotamus is way messier.
SPEAKER_07So we don't often encourage this, but you have to pick a side.
SPEAKER_03You have to side with someone.
SPEAKER_07Call and share which song you would rather listen to on a loop all day. Hippopotamus for Christmas, or the 12 Days of Christmas by the Muppets. 800-609-1049. Ryan, what about you?
SPEAKER_03No, wait, hang on. We have to introduce Ryan properly. Hi ho, Ryan. How about you?
SPEAKER_05It's gotta be the 12 days. Yeah!
SPEAKER_03Why? You gotta tell me why, because I'm with you all the way.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I feel like with the 12 days of Christmas, you can eventually like tune that out over time. With the hippopotamus, you have to carry that hippopotamus throughout the day.
SPEAKER_07I don't know how I could tune out all the Muppets singing at me.
SPEAKER_03Well, I can't tune out that girl's piercing voice. No, no, you can't. You can't. It goes right.
SPEAKER_07But it's part of the fun. The nasal, like, I want a hippopotamus.
SPEAKER_03I don't want to think about anyone's nasal.
SPEAKER_07It's just funny.
SPEAKER_05Absolutely not.
Listeners Pick A Side
SPEAKER_03If you haven't started seeing it on social media posts, you will. Spotify Wrapped has been released. So this is where they give you all kinds of information about if you've got a Spotify account, your listening habits. Now, if you've got Spotify and you're listening here at the river, thanks for not forgetting about your radio. Thank you. Please continue to listen and support your local Christian River radio station. We appreciate you, but it would be silly for us to not acknowledge. Yeah, people listen to Spotify. Of course. That's where a lot of people do their music. My kids do that. I do sometimes say, hey, but still. So one of the things that they do, besides your most listened to song and artists, and and genre and all that art, they give you your listening age.
SPEAKER_07Which I think is new this year. Because I always look at my Spotify rapped and I love it.
Spotify Wrapped And Listening Age
SPEAKER_03I do not. I love it. I think it's rude. Okay, so Hannah, what is your Spotify listening age?
SPEAKER_07So listen, let me give some context around this. Let me set the scene.
SPEAKER_03She's already backpedaling.
SPEAKER_07Because since I got married in February, my Spotify has become corrupted because my husband listens to it through our Alexa devices.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_07All day, every day.
SPEAKER_03So far, all I hear are excuses.
SPEAKER_07So my and I actually don't listen to much Spotify at all.
SPEAKER_03So this is your husband. Spotify age.
SPEAKER_07Husband Spotify.
SPEAKER_03Which Sure, okay.
SPEAKER_07I have never heard him listen to the era of songs that it's saying he listens to. Because Spotify says my husband and I Spotify account listening age is 68.
SPEAKER_0668. Did you feel the story?
SPEAKER_03We are in our 30s. Did you feel the storm coming earlier this week, money?
SPEAKER_07He was heartened. And so I'm so confused. I'm like, when does he listen? I don't know. Is that like the Bee Gees, Elton John? Who would have been popular? Because it was the 70s. It says he's listening to a lot of songs in the 70s. Yeah, all those artists. Is that Pink Floyd? What who is that?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but I know that.
SPEAKER_07I have never heard him listen to those. That's okay. His top five artists are today's artists. So I'm so confused when he's secretly listening to 70s music. You've got a conversation to have with your husband when you get home tonight. But apparently we are 68 years old according to the listening age on Spotify.
SPEAKER_03Producer Mike, what does your Spotify age label you as? I'm 58.
SPEAKER_02Older than my parents.
SPEAKER_03The Gen Zier is older than his own parents.
SPEAKER_07I feel better about that because you're a decade younger than me, and so it adds up that your music listening is still a decade younger than us. But I still so I feel I feel good.
SPEAKER_03So I did this. Yeah. And I'm in my 40s.
SPEAKER_07Really?
SPEAKER_03I'm in my no no no no.
SPEAKER_07Oh, I thought you meant it was like on the nose.
SPEAKER_03No, in real life, I'm in my 40s. Spotify calls my listening age 34. Good for you. I blame Ohio's own 21 pilots. Yeah. Rapper NF, Christian Guy, uh, and Brandon Lake, and Phil Wickham, and Forrest Frank.
SPEAKER_06And that means you're in your 30s, already.
SPEAKER_03My knees don't hurt nearly as much as they did before we started this conversation.
SPEAKER_07Christmas is a time full of peace and joy. It's so restful. Not for everyone. I'm gonna tell you that.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna ask if you were okay, but now I know you are clearly not. I'm still recovering.
SPEAKER_07I remember back in high school in college, I would work the Christmas season at Chick-fil-A in the Polaris Mall.
SPEAKER_02Oh, bless you.
SPEAKER_07And let me tell you, there is nothing peaceful about it. Hordes of people wrapped around the food court waiting for chicken nuggets. There would be moms and dads with their little ones. They were all hangry and tired, and the kiddos would be screaming for a peppermint milkshake, which is trash, even at Chick-fil-A. And every time I made a milkshake, the ice cream would spray all over the place.
SPEAKER_03I need to make sure that you understand Hannah's not making an actual statement about Chick-fil-A's food quality. She just hates tasty things like mint chocolates.
Be Kind To Holiday Workers
SPEAKER_07Mint should not go in any dessert. Anyway, then you're trying to confirm with the kitchen staff that they made a brand new batch of waffle fries for the person who only likes a quarter serving of the salt. What? Then there'd be the human who'd make you do math. I'm gonna give you a 20 so you can break my change into ones and fives. And by the way, I want this many quarters for my kids to play on the machines. And I would stand there so panicked. And then I would go take my 30-minute break, and someone would find me eating in the food court and ask for a refill on their diet lemonade. By the way, if you're ordering lemonade, just get the lemonade.
SPEAKER_03Just get the real lemonade. Are you okay? I have to go back to my original question. Are you okay?
SPEAKER_07I think so. And I don't say this to complain.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I kind of do. We just talked about lying on the show, Hannah.
SPEAKER_04Don't lie.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_07Here's the reminder that even I need, even though I lived this. Please, please be kind to holiday workers this season.
SPEAKER_03Oh, there's actually a there's actually a real meaning behind it.
SPEAKER_07Okay. Please be so kind to holiday workers, to men and women working at restaurants and stores, working customer service. This is the most difficult time of the year when it comes to working in a people-facing job. And just remember, and again, this is for me too. Every encounter is an opportunity to speak life and joy into someone. And maybe this year you can look at that 18-year-old working the cash register at Chick-fil-A, Wendy's, Walmart, wherever it is, and say, Hey, you're doing great. Thanks for being here. And Merry Christmas.
SPEAKER_03This will stand out in your memory like a beacon of light shining in the winter dark. What's your holiday highlight that always makes you smile? Whether it's a tradition you do every year or something from the past, you think about it and everything just kind of warms up a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You can call or text with yours 800-609-1049. For me, it was one year right after I put the lights on our house. And this was gosh, this was probably about 12 or 13 years ago, so it's been a while. But we got for the first time those icicle lights, the dangly ones. And they were the first year I had bought LEDs, so they just had a different shine to them.
SPEAKER_07They were fancy.
SPEAKER_03They really were. I went all out that year, and I was, you know, I go out to the streets, take a picture, and just like, these look great.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I go inside, knock on the door an hour later. Complete strangers have pulled up to our house. Okay. And they said, Where did you get your lights?
SPEAKER_07No, stop it.
SPEAKER_03They're beautiful.
SPEAKER_07And I was I've made it.
SPEAKER_03My heart grew three sizes today. I love the boldness of that stranger. And it was like that always makes me spot because I love decorating. Yeah. I love Christmas. And it was just that moment where everything came together, and I told him I got them at Walmart, but they're beautiful. They're so, so nice. What a find. So it was my holiday highlight that I still have yet to overcome. Like that's been the tippy top of it. What's your holiday highlight? You can share this morning. Call or text 800-609-1049. Thinking way back, I guess it doesn't have to be that way back. Maybe it's something that happens every year. What's your holiday highlight? Whether it's your church's Christmas pageant or the kids' choir concert at school every year, for me, it was hanging some brand new Christmas lights many years ago, and somebody knocked on the door and was like, Where'd you get those? I know. They're gorgeous.
SPEAKER_07It's such a compliment. I know. Somebody brave enough to come knock on a stranger's door and ask that, that is the highest of compliments.
SPEAKER_03I have never felt better about myself. Call or text with your holiday highlight, 800-609-1049. Producer Mike is here, who's on the uh on the text machine.
SPEAKER_02We had a friend share that their Christmas highlight that they look forward to is the day after Thanksgiving. They'll cut down their own tree and the smell of the tree in the car and the house, incredible.
SPEAKER_03It's that pine. We we had a real tree, and my mom would also make a real wreath every year out of that. It smelled so good. To this date, if I get a good pine-scented candle, I'm right back in my living room at eight years old.
SPEAKER_07I hang those little scentsy sticks on the tree that smell like pine to make it we pretend it's real.
SPEAKER_03Pinish.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_03What's your holiday highlight? Is it the pine that you hold on?
SPEAKER_07It was actually a specific memory. J oh goodness, probably five years ago now. It was when Mia, who is my oldest niece, had just turned one. It was her it was her first Christmas knot as an infant baby. Yeah, yeah. Um, and she had just discovered tape. Oh. So she was unwrapping a Christmas present in the best way a one-year-old can.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07And a piece of tape got stuck to her finger. And she thought it was really funny at first until she went to grab it with her other hand and then it was stuck to that finger. Yep. And then it just kept going back and forth. She's tossing her hand back and forth. She's trying to wipe it on her pants. Did she lose her mind? Uh, she started like doing screams, like, ah! Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07And I have a video somewhere, so I have to find it and post it to the River Morning Show Facebook page. But it was just the most cherished, silliest memory as we welcomed in our very first niece and very first grandkiddo on that side of the family.
SPEAKER_03It's the season, you think about it. What's your holiday highlight? It is the season for the skies to part and the light to shine down on you. You just had that holiday highlight moment, or it's a tradition you do every single year. You can share all about it, memory lane or not. Call or text 800-609-1049. Tomorrow, good morning. What was your or what is your holiday highlight?
Best And Worst Of Christmas
SPEAKER_00So when my daughter, who's now 23, was three years old, it was the year that everything was, quote, just what I always wanted. Every single thing. And then she'd turn around and say, What is it?
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03I have been there on both ends of that. You should have just tested the theory while you were going, let's let's go wrap a bowl from the kitchen.
SPEAKER_07Yes. Yeah, yeah. I've seen videos of that where like parents just wrap a banana and they say the same thing tomorrow. They go, No, it's what I wanted. Like they're just so joyful and sweet.
SPEAKER_00A banana! Yeah, yeah. It was my best Christmas ever because he just got everything he ever wanted. I started all over again uh two and a half years ago, and I have a two-year-old now. But I'm looking forward to that Christmas again.
SPEAKER_07Yes, it's coming soon. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was Christmas. Hannah, do you want the best part or the worst part of Christmas?
SPEAKER_07I'm gonna go with the best.
SPEAKER_03You want the best part first? Because you're gonna get both.
SPEAKER_07Oh, oh. Well, then, okay, give me the worst. I thought it would.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so either worse. You can share yours, by the way, the best and worst of Christmas, so we can enjoy the memory and maybe cringe laugh with you. Call or text 800-609-1049. So this was probably 11 years ago. My wife and I and our kids were opening presents, smiles all around, and so one of my kids' smiles turned kind of kind of pensive. We thought they were thinking. And then he turned kind of green. And then we revisited breakfast on the couch.
SPEAKER_07Oh no.
SPEAKER_03That was the worst Christmas. Because we had we had plans, we had like two other things we were gonna go do that.
SPEAKER_07Nope, down and out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and it was uh we weren't even done opening gifts, and we're like, we had to go put that kid in bed because he was unwell.
SPEAKER_07He's wanted to be green like the Grinch.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it his heart grew smaller. So that was the worst of Christmas because I think we've all been there.
SPEAKER_07Okay, redeem it with what was the best of Christmas?
SPEAKER_03The best of Christmas, we got snowed in one Christmas day. And we also, this is the introvert in me. We also had places to go that day and we couldn't. Oh no, but everyone was healthy. Everyone was healthy and happy. They had all their new stuff to play with. We got so many things out. I had so many instruction booklets. They went outside and played the all the kids. It was awesome because it was so nice to simply be home for Christmas.
SPEAKER_07Aw, and enjoy the snow too. I bet they went out and rolled around and they did.
SPEAKER_03Again, we could not go anywhere. And it was my absolute favorite. So you can call and share your best and worst of Christmas at 800-609-1049. There are so many amazing moments that happen every Christmas. There's so many awful moments that happen every Christmas. So you can share the best and worst of Christmas. Call or text 800-609-1049. I mentioned the worst for us was a kid waking up, getting started on Christmas, and then not feeling well, and you can fill in the blanks after that. The best Christmas for us was when we got snowed in because it was the kids were little, so they all went out and played, but they were big enough they could take care of themselves, so I got to stay inside. And then we didn't go anywhere else the rest of that whole day. Hannah, what's the best and worst of Christmas for you? And let's do the worst first to get it out of the way.
SPEAKER_07It was the first Christmas where we realized that our grandparents weren't with us. All four were gone.
SPEAKER_03The the seats around the table are empty.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, nobody was there. And you know what? It it was still really sweet because we got to honor them and we still every year get to put I have different ornaments that reflect them and our and their love for us. But that was a really hard Christmas. It was it was just in 2020.
SPEAKER_03So not that long ago.
SPEAKER_07Not that long ago. But you know what? God is so good, and we know that they're up in heaven with him. Our our best Christmas memory since then, even, has been every single Christmas where a new niece or nephew is added into the family.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because your family's pretty prolific at this point.
Joseph’s Quiet Courage
SPEAKER_07Oh, it's crazy. There's six on my side, two on my husband's side, and I never knew how joyful it can be to watch them open up their presents. I mean, in their stockings, they have their names on them. Every year there's a new one up there, even including pets. Yeah. And so the best part of Christmas is all the kiddos and everyone added to the family for sure.
SPEAKER_03You can share the best and worst of Christmas too, just to get us all in the mood and ready for the season. Call or text 800-609-1049.
SPEAKER_07Is that real? True story. True story. In the Bible, there was this fella named Joseph. He was just a regular guy, probably thinking about carpentry and bills, maybe what's for dinner. Then one day, he found out that Mary, his fiancee, was pregnant. And as you can imagine, our friend Joe was panicked. Wait, what? That's not possible. He was confused and honestly probably felt a little betrayed.
SPEAKER_03I'm sure he was hurt.
Honesty In Prayer
SPEAKER_07He even started thinking, maybe I should just walk away. But then, in the middle of all that chaos, God sent an angel, not with lightning or trumpets, just a quiet, hey, it's okay, Joseph. Don't be afraid. This is all part of a bigger story. And suddenly everything shifted. Joseph realized that Mary's baby wasn't just any baby, it was a part of something miraculous. The next morning, he made a choice. He walked up to Mary and said, All right, we are in this together. And just like that, Joseph stepped into an adventure bigger than he could ever imagine. A story full of trust, of courage, and ushering in the Savior who would save the world.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, when we get to heaven one day, I'm gonna find him and I'm gonna say thank you.
SPEAKER_07Yes.
SPEAKER_03Proud of what he did and following God and taking care of Mary and Jesus.
SPEAKER_07And that's a true story.
A Pile Of Puppies Brings Joy
SPEAKER_03You've heard the phrase, honesty is the best policy. We've taught our children that. Like you don't have to lie. It makes things worse when you lie. Yeah. Why do we then try to pull one over on people so often still? Well, yeah, then there's that. And I am not laughing at lying. I just like everyone still does it. We just can't help ourselves. It's and it's not even like we're always telling a bald-faced lie. What I mean is we can just like just a little hood winking. Yeah. Just a little like. That would you call like a white lie? Little half-truth. Yeah. You know? And the more hoodwinking we do, we end up fooling ourselves too. You may have had this conversation with my kids. Like, you lie so much, you start to believe your own lie. Yeah. And then you don't know which way is up or down anymore because you've been coloring it all the wrong way all this whole time. So I put some of this encouragement in the journal I'm keeping for my kids. I call it Thoughts, Prayers, and Observations. This is entry number 88. Be honest with God in prayer. And as you get real with God, you might find you've been fooling yourself. So be sure you're also being honest with yourself when you pray. These are just some thoughts, prayers, and observations.
SPEAKER_07And here's a happy heart story for you. There's a nonprofit called Pile of Puppies. Yes. Say less. I'm in. It's exactly what it sounds like. A literal pile of puppies. It all started when the founder Jennifer's coworker brought in a whole litter of wait for it, Swiss mountain dog puppies. That's what you're with. Your puppy bear is. My new little puppies. So you know I had to share this story. Of course. I had to. And they just all tumbled into her and onto her in the office. She said it brought so much joy that it was so overwhelming, it sparked this whole idea. So now Pile of Puppies brings big litters of wiggly fluffy puppers to kiddos and hospitals. Oh my word.
SPEAKER_03My favorite part of like this whole story is that connection. But my favorite part of a pile of puppies are those little tails.
SPEAKER_07Yes, I know they're so good. Sometimes they can be painful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, that's true.
Listen Live And Closing Notes
SPEAKER_07But so with pile of puppies, volunteers set up a little play pin, they get everything ready, and then the kiddo just sits in the middle and they release the puppets and they just go crazy licking the kiddo, loving on that sweet little child. They've done this for about 2,000 different kids across the US so far. One little girl, Julia, said it was a bright spot in a really tough season. And her mom said it was like watching her daughter get a little piece of joy back. Which, how can you not be happy when there's a pile of puppies on you? I'm pretty sure heaven's gonna include puppies. I think so, too.
SPEAKER_01And that's a happy heart story for you. Hey, you're invited to listen to the recording of this podcast live. How? Where? It's simple. You can share every weekday morning with Josh and Hannah on 1049 The River in Columbus, Ohio, or online at riverradio.com.
