Tease And Listener Prompt

SPEAKER_03

Here's what to expect on this week's episode of the River Morning Show weekly podcast. Breaking news!

SPEAKER_07

It's a River Morning Show. Major announcements, and I give the floor to Hannah Bobana. Oh, okay. This is it. I get to share it.

SPEAKER_03

I can share it. Yeah, okay, okay. Well, it makes sense.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, you're sharing it first.

SPEAKER_06

Thank you for clicking play on this podcast. You can find more when you click on demand at riverradio.com. And if you missed the major morning show announcement from this week's show, you are in luck. Keep listening.

SPEAKER_07

How old are you?

SPEAKER_06

I'm not telling. You know you're getting old when? And you can fill in the blank any old way you like. Call or text 800-609-1049 when that realization blasted you directly in the face. So for me, it's when you have to use the phrase, it's not bad once I get going.

SPEAKER_03

You used this recently? Yeah, recently. Oh no.

SPEAKER_06

My back is killing me. Oh. Getting up or starting to move is terrible, but then we get back to the quote, it's not bad once I get going.

SPEAKER_03

Does it get worse as the the colder it gets? Like, do you think the weather is a slight trigger?

SPEAKER_06

It's interesting that you would say that because it started hurting about last Tuesday. Most good old boys feel it in the knees. Yeah. I'm thinking maybe I'm feeling it in the midfield.

SPEAKER_03

Oh man. Next time we need to know if a snowstorm is coming. We're just gonna ask you, Josh. Look at my face.

SPEAKER_06

Am I grimacing? Then get your shovel. Yeah. Call or text, and you can fill in the blank. You know you're getting old when. 800-609-1049. A smile can warm things up, right?

SPEAKER_11

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_06

So we need that. That's why we're doing this. How old are you? I'm not telling. You know you're getting old when you can fill in the blank when you call or text. 800-609-1049. I knew I was getting old last week. I knew there was a storm coming before anybody else did. Because my back started hurting. And about Tuesday, I was not feeling well. I've been to the chiropractor once already. I'm going back again this week. I need help.

SPEAKER_03

Has this happened to you before that it it's weather bound? I really don't, I really don't think it is.

SPEAKER_06

Okay. Although the timing is suspicious. Next time my back feels like this, I'm going to instantly go to the radar.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Check it out.

Social Rules We Break

SPEAKER_06

See what's coming. All right, Rhonda, you are up. How did you know you were getting old?

SPEAKER_10

I I teach preschool in Sunday school. And um one of the four-year-olds looked me straight in the eye and said, Miss Rhonda, you're getting old. You're probably going to die.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, we all have to cross that bridge.

SPEAKER_10

I loved it. And I told her, I said, you're probably right. I'm probably going to die, but I hope not today.

SPEAKER_03

You're such a good sport. Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_06

And attention, rule followers, no, you aren't. Everybody has at least one social rule they refuse to follow. Calling them out. Absolutely. Because I am a rule follower. Annie, you know this about me. I get itchy. You do. So uh the one social rule I don't follow is elbows on the table all the time.

SPEAKER_03

Which I feel like has been a a dying trend. Like I don't know how many people still abide by that.

SPEAKER_06

I don't either because I don't keep track. Because let your elbows do their thing. I don't watch. Uh-huh. Hannah is uh sitting in the don't seat section of church.

SPEAKER_03

If they're if the ropes are up because they want you to sit near the front, yeah, I'm not gonna sit near the front.

SPEAKER_06

She just says no. She's gonna walk around the ropes. Good thing, good thing the Holy Spirit makes it to the back row.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely. Just fine.

SPEAKER_06

Thanks for calling Harper's mom, is how she has uh identified herself. What is the social rule you don't follow? Because like examples that people have given are things like I don't go to the door if someone knocks, I don't pick up the phone if someone calls, you know, that that sort of thing. Harper's mom, what do you got?

SPEAKER_02

You don't want to see, you just sneak away, right? I am the opposite of that extreme. And anytime a solicitor or anyone comes to the door, I practically kidnap them and make them come inside and have a sandwich. Oh my goodness! Play a board game if they're up for it.

SPEAKER_03

What is the normal reaction? How long does somebody actually end up staying?

SPEAKER_02

Um, we've had anyone from five minutes to two hours.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my goodness, how fun though. So you probably startle some of the solicitors and they're like, I'm getting out of here. And then other people, they feel so seen and loved. How cool.

SPEAKER_02

They they welcome it. The one gal, she was a pest control salesperson, and I had to take a break and lay a kid down for a nap, and I just say or go. I'll see ya if I see you when I get back. She was still there.

SPEAKER_03

My goodness. This just made me smile ear to ear. This is the sweetest thing I've ever heard.

SPEAKER_02

So, as someone like I appreciate the hustle of um people that go door-to-door sharing the good news. Yeah. Like, when they come to you, they're doing half the job for you. And so I will never shy away from a stranger that comes to the door.

SPEAKER_06

Some of us are just built different, Harper's mom.

SPEAKER_02

I know.

SPEAKER_06

Rule followers unite and start to shake with fear because this is a platform for the rule breakers. Uh-oh. Started this conversation last week, and we're all one of these people, actually. Backed by popular demand. What is the one social rule you just refuse to follow?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I'm so curious.

SPEAKER_06

Well, for yours, Hannah, I want to remind everybody that she sits like a queen.

SPEAKER_03

No, that's not it.

SPEAKER_06

She finds the section in the church seating that's roped off that no one's allowed to sit in, and she plops herself right in the middle of it.

SPEAKER_03

It's only bring me my tea. You're saying it wrong. It's only roped off until the front fills.

SPEAKER_01

Is the front filled when you sit down? No. So it's roped.

SPEAKER_03

I don't want to sit in the front. I'm sorry, I'm not that person. I'm really, really proud of you if you are. But no, I just ignore the little ropes and go sit in my comfy back-ish roast.

SPEAKER_06

I am an elbows on the table guy. Yeah, yeah. And thankfully my wife doesn't care.

SPEAKER_03

Grandma Ellen would be so upset.

SPEAKER_06

She would be. Yeah. But she's not eating dinner with us. No, she's just welcome to, but she's not. So, so there's that. What social rule are you willing to and maybe overzealously break? Call or text 800-609-1049. Madeline, what's yours?

SPEAKER_09

So I can't stand the little pleasantries of like, how are you doing? I'm good, how are you? Because no one really cares.

SPEAKER_11

Yeah.

SPEAKER_09

So um, instead, I like to give just kind of off-the-wall responses. Um, like, how are you doing? Well, I'm better than my inbox.

SPEAKER_07

Or that's fun.

SPEAKER_09

It's so fun. Yeah. Or like, how are you doing? And kind of look around paranoid. Why?

SPEAKER_03

Oh my gosh. We need to be best friends. This is hilarious. This is great. Oh my goodness, what a gem. I need to adopt that into my life. Thank you for sharing that today.

SPEAKER_00

You are welcome.

SPEAKER_06

So you can call or text with yours. Thanks, Madeline. Um, you can the number's 800-609-1049. Producer Mike, what do you got? Christy.

SPEAKER_04

I know you're supposed to wait for everyone at the table to be served their meal before taking the first bite. But if mine comes out first and I'm starving, I'm eating it while it's still warm. Wow. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I haven't gotten that brave. I wait, but then I'm just salvating and my food's getting cold.

SPEAKER_06

As long as you're not doing the dog thing and it's dripping out of your mouth. No guarantees. Okay.

SPEAKER_04

No guarantees. All right. Nicole said, sidewalks. I don't use them if the direct path to the door is shorter. Oh, she's walking through the grass.

SPEAKER_06

Just straight up. I've seen people like that and I wonder what makes them tick.

SPEAKER_03

That doesn't bother me. Really? I don't know if I do it, but if I saw it, I'd be like, yeah, you do that. I am fine.

SPEAKER_06

I am absolutely taking the sidewalk.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_06

That's me. All right. Uh last one.

SPEAKER_04

Michelle said, if we go out to eat and the food isn't right, I will send it back and most likely not pay for it. Really? Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_06

If you're gonna eat it, you're gonna eat someone's spit.

SPEAKER_03

That's what I was thinking. Like, does she does she take the a new plate? Because I'd be very concerned about a new plate of food.

SPEAKER_06

I I usually we've had this conversation before. Hair in it, whatever. I don't care. I'm keeping it and I'm eating it.

SPEAKER_03

Oh no, I'm just like done with my meal, but I still I still pay for that.

SPEAKER_06

I'm removing the foreign bodies from the dish. What social rule do you refuse to follow? Call or text 800-609-1049.

SPEAKER_08

And it's the moment everyone has been waiting for breaking news.

SPEAKER_07

It's a river morning show. Major announcements, and I give the floor to Hannah Boban. Okay. This is it.

SPEAKER_03

I get to share it. I can share it. Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, you're sharing it.

SPEAKER_03

My husband and I are having a baby. Talking about a member being added to the river family. We're so excited. Oh, my heart rate is like really fast. I know. Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_06

Relax. The baby needs you to relax.

SPEAKER_03

I know, I know.

SPEAKER_06

If if all the screaming and yelling and you missed it, say again.

SPEAKER_03

My hubby and I are having a baby.

SPEAKER_06

So excited.

SPEAKER_03

So another little one coming to the river family due August 5th.

SPEAKER_08

Oh wow, okay.

SPEAKER_03

So just hit 13 weeks this week, and we're so excited. We're over the moon. We've been praying for this baby, and the time has come, and we're just so excited. We've we already put up a crib because we're like, we're ready.

SPEAKER_07

Let's go.

SPEAKER_06

I don't know if anyone has told you yet, but you're glowing.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, but thank you. The lights are just really bright in here.

SPEAKER_06

There is that. There is that.

SPEAKER_03

But it's been really fun. We actually found out on Thanksgiving morning. Oh, nice. I know it was great. I just decided on a whim to take a test, and I really had built this up in my head. Like, I'm going to tell my husband Chris in a fun way. You know, you see that on Instagram. You make it cute, you make him like shocked or something. I was in so much shock that I just walk out of the bathroom shaking, holding the results, and we both just like stared at each other. They're like, oh my goodness, this is happening. And then we waited till Christmas morning to tell our families. So it's a gift. Yeah, it's been really fun to celebrate. We had our moms open these little onesies that said, See you in August.

SPEAKER_06

Uh-oh, it's amazing.

SPEAKER_03

So, little baby, come into the river family. We're so excited to be in this community, knowing that you'll be praying for for us as a family, and we get to be praying for you in return. And it's just such a blessing. We're we're over the moon. I don't know what else to say.

Puppy Uncle And Snowstorm Antics

SPEAKER_06

We're so excited. I will say this like, I as you're listening to this and you are jumping up and down excited, so are we. Uh, here's the deal: the phone lines in the text, it's open for well wishes. Like, let's go, let's do it, let's shower them now. Call or text with Yays 800-609-1049.

SPEAKER_07

Hannah and Chris, her husband, they're having a baby.

SPEAKER_06

And the Bible tells us to weep with those who weep, but also to rejoice with those who rejoice. So, producer Mike, you're walking around here with this weird smile on your face. So, we have to ask what's going on. So we can we can be happy with you.

SPEAKER_04

What's happening? Well, I'm so excited because I'm going to be an uncle.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, that's huge.

SPEAKER_04

Not a human uncle, a puppy uncle.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, that's still huge.

SPEAKER_06

I was doing the math, and I know your sister's younger than you, and you're not old, and I hadn't heard about a husband or anything, and so I was like, wow, all right, this is new. You're talking you're gonna be a punkle.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, puppy uncle. Exactly. Yeah, my friends are getting a puppy, and I could not be more excited.

SPEAKER_03

Do you know what kind they're getting?

SPEAKER_04

They're getting a burnadoodle. Oh, so sweet. He's adorable. I've seen pictures, and I can't wait to cuddle with him. No, puppy ears are my favorite thing on earth.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, oh, I just can't I just can't let go of them.

SPEAKER_03

Now, do they live close enough that you'll actually be able to get some good FaceTime in?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, they do.

SPEAKER_04

They live like 15 minutes from me, so I'm so excited.

SPEAKER_06

And we have to call it fuzz time. It's not FaceTime, it's fuzz time. Fuzz therapy, I think I've heard you call it before. That's exactly what it is. Yeah, it does really feel like therapy. I will say that. Yeah, all my problems fade away when I'm scritching my dog's head.

SPEAKER_03

So, do you understand the responsibilities that come with being a pet uncle, though?

SPEAKER_04

Well, they did tell me that I'll do some pet sitting. Yeah, there you go. I'm happy to do that. That's always good. You know, I gotta be the one who plays with the puppy when the parents are tired. Yeah, yeah. I think I can take that one on. I don't mind that too much. So I'm very excited. And that means that I get to go and visit, and I don't have all the responsibilities that they do. So I get all the cuddles, I get the joy that puppies bring. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But when he has an accident at some point, it's on their carpet and if you've been watching the news throughout the entire snowpocalypse, you may have seen a couple of your local newscasters creating igloos in the storm for their kiddos.

SPEAKER_06

I did see that.

SPEAKER_03

That was really cute. Sitting in hot tubs for the newscast itself, which is crazy. I even saw one of the local Central Ohio guys, he ran to work, to and from work in the blizzard. Oh, well, yes. Four and a half miles.

SPEAKER_06

You couldn't drive it.

SPEAKER_03

That's what he said. He couldn't get out of his driveway, so he just ran to work.

SPEAKER_06

Wow, that's dedication.

SPEAKER_03

I know, I know. And it just got me thinking: what is your favorite, maybe crazy, memory of playing out in the snow?

SPEAKER_08

Oh, so many good memories.

SPEAKER_03

There's so many like childhood, like core just moments.

SPEAKER_06

Wait, so like what popped up for you when you thought of this entire idea?

Favorite Snow Day Memories

SPEAKER_03

Growing up in the central Ohio area, we would always go up to Mansfield to hang out with my Nana and Papa over the Christmas season, over the winter, and there was always this massive sledding hill that kind of backed up to their neighborhood. Well, there were 16 grandkids. Good grease! So there were never enough sleds. So we would grab trash can lids and cookie sheets and anything we could, anything we could to sled down this hill, but we would always take the family dog with us. Oh, wow. So the family dog would come with us to the sledding hill, and I don't know why we kept doing this year after year because we learned our lesson pretty quickly. She would come barreling down the hill as you were sliding down. You're like seven looking behind you, and there's just drool and teeth barreling towards you. You're getting knocked off your trash can lid and just spiraling down the rest of this hill.

SPEAKER_06

That sounds fun and terrifying at the same time.

SPEAKER_03

Maybe it did just add to the adrenaline, but it is forever locked into my memory of just like the snow, while I don't love it all the time, created these perfect childhood experiences. 100% that I would never give up. Yeah, it's so great. I would never give it up. So, what is your favorite, maybe crazy, memory of playing out in the snow? You can call or text to share 800-609-1049. Snow days are full of adventures. Cold cheeks, wild sled rides, memories that just stick with you forever.

SPEAKER_06

Toes you can't feel anymore. Oh, absolutely. Until you can feel them and they hurt so bad.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. You can call or text to share your favorite, maybe crazy, snowy memory, 800-609-1049. Luann, what's your childhood snow day memory?

SPEAKER_00

Okay, we grew up on a farm. Um we had an old wrecked car um on our property, and so my dad log chained that car hood to the back of a tractor and told the four of us kids to pile on. And he took us down the road to the creek. Played crack the whip with us kids on that car hood.

SPEAKER_03

Wait, is it what is that?

SPEAKER_00

What does that actually look like?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, what is that?

SPEAKER_00

Well, you went flying off the car hood. I see.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, he would whip that thing around and fling you because you're flying off of it.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, well, I'm gonna say this. That sounds amazing, but also do not try that today. Nobody do that now.

SPEAKER_06

It's funny because you know, when you first mentioned snow memories, I every time it snows, especially like it did this weekend, I always think of the verse like, though your sins are like scarlet, they will be white as snow.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, that's a precious memory. I love that.

SPEAKER_06

When you talked about sledding and and Luann talking about sledding, I remember a friend at school at recess accidentally going backwards down our sleddhill.

SPEAKER_03

It would happen.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, because he he put himself in the back of a long, like toboggan sled.

SPEAKER_03

Sure.

SPEAKER_06

So weight distribution, he just swung backwards. He he was so funny looking at his face going down. He's like, I don't know how I got here.

SPEAKER_01

And I don't know where I'm going. But I can't get off.

SPEAKER_06

And so he um was going backwards. Someone was at the bottom of the hill, also backwards, like looking the other way. He ran into them. No, took their legs out from under them, they did a backwards flip and landed on their feet. Stop. Stuck the line. Everyone was okay. Everyone was okay, and I have a core childhood memory because of it. Producer Mike, you've experienced another way to keep smiling while it's snowing and so stinking cold outside.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I have. And that's to see the good in the middle of a snowstorm. Are you silver lining this thing? And that's okay if you are. I'm trying to coping pretty hard here. But after all the snow, I went outside, and you know, the plow would come. Good news. But the bad news was my car was trapped. Yeah, because you're in a few people.

SPEAKER_06

You're in an apartment complex, so you're in a parking lot with all kinds of other cars and things, and so it made it impossible.

SPEAKER_04

And my car is pretty short. I've got a little Subaru, and so it was pretty trapped. And big surprise, I didn't have a shovel. Well, why would you? You're from Virginia. Of course not. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_03

Usually an apartment complex will will handle that for you. Oh, really? Well, we'll handle like the sidewalks and whatnot. So why need a shovel? Yeah, until your car is an igloo.

SPEAKER_04

Exactly. Yes, you get it. And I thought I was cooked. I was like, I have no idea how to get out of here. So I spent the next couple hours worrying about it, and I was like, how am I gonna get it to work? How am I gonna escape? So I just went outside and I was like, if I need to just grab the snow by hand and move it all my

SPEAKER_03

Goodness.

SPEAKER_04

I can. I don't want to. Trying to go viral? That's a video. Yeah. But thank goodness I had a good Samaritan who left a shovel outside just smushed in a snowbank. Alright.

SPEAKER_03

Miracle shovel showing up.

Finding Good In Winter

SPEAKER_04

The Lord smiled upon you that day. Yeah. So that was awesome. I looked around. I was like, is there somebody like I should ask to borrow it? Nobody's around. So I'm just like, I'm just gonna grab it, shovel quick, put it right back where it's supposed to go. Looked around for somebody to think. Like, I have no idea who to think, but thank you, good Samaritan. Yeah, amazing.

SPEAKER_03

A general do-gooder.

SPEAKER_06

I think with the weather the way it's been and how dark and cold and all that stuff, the the winter can bring out the worst in us sometimes. We're just kind of grumpy, whatever. Or uplifting and encouraging the river, the it can bring out the best. So that's what producer Mike saw. Want to know how have you seen it or how have you done it? The ice box that is Ohio can bring out the best in us. Call or text the story 800-609-1049. One thing you can do to keep a smile on your face is try to look at the positives. Other ways to do that are intentional communication with a friend, reaching out. Yeah. Uh appreciating things like fuzzy socks.

SPEAKER_03

Love them.

SPEAKER_06

Keep your tootsies warm. And then like leaving a shovel for the next poor soul who needs to unearth their car from the parking lot. Snowpile, hashtag producer Mike.

SPEAKER_11

Yeah, that was a lifesaver.

SPEAKER_06

The recipient of the shovel that was there. These are just a few ways to keep smiling during winter storms and cold like this when you're just cooped up. But you you've probably seen a way or two. This winter weather has brought out the good in some people. Call or text 800-609-1049.

SPEAKER_03

When all the snow finally stopped coming down, we realized as we looked out our front window that because we live at a um at a corner where two roads meet, that the snow plows had pushed all the snow into your yard. Into our driveway. To the front of the driveway. I'm telling you, it was taller than me. It was taller than my husband, who's 6'2. Like we could not see over this wall of snow.

SPEAKER_08

100%. Wow.

SPEAKER_03

And back in December, when we had had a little bit of snow, they did the same thing, but it wasn't as much. But we spent some time and removed it ourselves. It was a little frustrating. About an hour or so later, this smaller pickup truck with a plow on the front comes to our driveway and spends almost an entire hour plowing just our driveway. No way. So we could get out of the drive. Oh my goodness, what an angel. I know. I don't know if he was officially ODOT or not. Wow. But he was just this blessing in this great wall of snow who said, I've got you, and I'm gonna spend my day making sure others can get free too.

SPEAKER_06

It's interesting if uh when I retire and if I had a truck, that would be a fun thing to do after storms, to be like, I'm going to be the end of driveway cleanup group.

SPEAKER_03

It would have taken us hours to do it by hand, and he did it in one. So such a blessing.

SPEAKER_06

You can't do that with a snowblower, you'll ruin your snowblower. And you can't do it with a shovel quickly because you're gonna die.

SPEAKER_03

I think we would have been throwing our bodies at it. Like to break it down.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, we've had other people chime in on Facebook. You can become a member of the River Morning Show Facebook group. Simple way. Just search the River Morning Show with Josh and Hannah. You can chime in there. But producer Mike, what are people saying? Good stuff they've seen, bringing out the best in people.

SPEAKER_04

Katie said that her neighbor and her husband teamed up. She said, My wonderful neighbor used his snowblower to get rid of the bulk snow, and then her husband shoveled the rest of theirs and the neighbors.

SPEAKER_03

Dreamwork makes the dream work. Loving it.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Alyssa said, I tried to go out for milk and I got stuck in the snow until some young men stepped in to help me out.

SPEAKER_05

Aww.

SPEAKER_06

That's it's really hard. I saw this the other day. It's really hard to push someone out because you, as the human, can't get any traction.

SPEAKER_03

No, you're just slip sliding around. It's a mess.

SPEAKER_06

It's uh perseverance. Yeah. And that's it. So thanks for sharing those. If you have any others, ways that you have seen the weather bring out the best in people that we can keep it positive at 800-609-1049. This is a tough world to live in if you don't like the uh if you don't like the conflict. Uh why does it have to be one side or the other on every single issue? You know, I realize nobody likes a compromise, and that's not what I'm getting at, but we are as a nation, as a society, there is a deep divide between two sides on any given issue. Is specifically us, and it seems we're only growing further apart. So, what do we do about this division among us as people? I'm not talking about heal the nation, I'm talking about relationships, talking about human beings and getting along with each other. There's a wedge there, so how do we remove it? Now I have found the best advice is to look at Jesus. I don't care what you're dealing with, look to him. So, what Jesus did when he was here in a very divided society, he welcomed, he invited, he included, he talked and shared, he prayed with, he ate with, he walked with. When's the last time I or you invited someone from the other side to sit down and have a meal with you, to go to coffee. Not to tell them why they're wrong, but just to be with them. One thing you'll notice, though, um, about Jesus, and this is where it gets kind of mushy and and interesting for you and me, he didn't condone what was wrong in somebody's life. But he never told the broken they were completely whole. Instead, he he spoke the truth to them and he showed his love. And so no one could confuse his correction with anger. Instead, they could see that he was doing that and saying what he said because he loved somebody. So maybe just maybe for you and me, because we're not God and we can't get it perfect. Maybe today, let's make a plan to invite, include, share, pray with, and speak truth in the kindest way possible.

SPEAKER_05

Hey, you're invited to listen to the recording of this podcast live. How? Where? It's simple. You can share every weekday morning with Josh and Hannah on 1049 The River in Columbus, Ohio, or online at riveradio.com. It was a journey, but we've made it together.

SPEAKER_06

Thanks for listening to this episode of the River Morning Show weekly podcast.
