Welcome And Quick Tease
SPEAKER_03Here's what to expect on this week's episode of the River Morning Show Weekly Podcast. Where I used to get away with like 15 SPS. Now, if it's not 50, I'm crying.
SPEAKER_05Well, now you sound like this.
SPEAKER_00Yes! That's it!
Porch Weather And Simple Joys
SPEAKER_08Thanks for the pressing play listening in on this podcast. You can find more when you click on demand at riveradio.com. As of this recording, Hannah, it's gonna be like 81 degrees on Sunday.
SPEAKER_03I'm so excited. What are you going to bring it on?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, because like you you not only are built for this, but you've been whining about it since fall came.
SPEAKER_03I'm going to put even more of my winter and spring clothing away. Uh-huh. I'm going to just sit outside on our front porch and soak it in. Maybe make homemade lemonade, because why not?
SPEAKER_08That's great.
SPEAKER_03What are you gonna do?
SPEAKER_08I'm going to sit on the porch and smell the cut grass that I did not cut.
Different Conflict Styles At The Airport
SPEAKER_03Okay. Hey, that's a win. You handle conflict differently, and that creates conflict in and of itself.
SPEAKER_08Because you you don't speak the same language. You're like you're looking at one thing differently than somebody else.
SPEAKER_03It's so frustrating. My husband, Chris, and I just got back from a trip, and when we landed, Chris told me to go grab our bags at baggage claim and that he would make the long trek to the walking lot where we left our car for the week. What a guy. Yeah, and then he was gonna come pick me up. I was like, cool, I can sit and wait. Well, I waited and I and I waited. Our bags were here, and I just kept waiting. So I naturally looked up his location because we share that. Dude, where'd you go? And it showed his truck just parked in the middle of the airport road. Uh, that's not where it's near the walking lot, but like in the road.
SPEAKER_08It's not where it belongs.
SPEAKER_03No, so I panic. I call him and he answers for like two seconds, and I don't really hear his voice, I just hear background noise, and then it hangs up. I'm like, uh-uh, no. Worst case scenario is going through my head. Like this. Could have been a crash, somebody could have broken into our car while we were gone. Right. I get anxious, I call two more times, he sends me straight to voicemail. So I start trucking it with our two suitcases hand in hand, wheeling my way down the Columbus Airport uh sidewalk towards the walking. She's pregnant and she's on a mission. I know! I was like, what's going on? And then he he calls. Hey, I'm almost to the passenger pickup. Where are you? What? What do you mean? Where am I? Where are you? Turns out the ticket payment out of the walking lot was malfunctioning. So he had to call the helpline, and I kept calling him while he was being transferred person to person to pay our fee and get the gate raised just to get out of the walking lot.
SPEAKER_08So that's why he kept passing you off.
SPEAKER_03He's like, stop it! He's like talked to six people at this point, and he's so frustrated, and there's a line of cars behind him, and everyone's stuck. And so I'm mad because I'm like, you have to tell me you're not hurt. I'm freaking out. And he's mad because he had to fight through so many customer service reps. And the the time that he accidentally picked up my call, it sent him to do it all over again. I know.
SPEAKER_01So here's my question: How would you have handled this differently?
SPEAKER_03Oh, oh, I don't know, because we both got in the car and we're just silent for the drive home. When have you or someone in your family come across the same conflict but handled it in very different ways? Like, I can't be alone in this. You've been through something like this. Call or text to share 800-609-1049. You speak different conflict reactions, and then it creates more conflict. It's a terrible cycle. My husband Chris and I just got back from a trip, and he told me to go to baggage claim, and he was gonna take the long trek to the walking lot to pick up the car.
SPEAKER_08Makes a lot of sense.
SPEAKER_03Sure. Like I was like, that's so great. Thank you. I wait forever, and he's nowhere to be seen. I check his location because I'm like, this isn't good, and we do share location, and it shows his truck in the middle of the airport road, and then I start calling him and he's not picking up.
SPEAKER_08Yikes.
SPEAKER_03And I'm panicked. So I start trekking it to the walking lot with these two suitcases. Meanwhile, come to find out later. He was stuck on the phone with customer service because the payment gate wasn't working. And every time I called, it sent him to the back of the line in the conversation with the customer service people. Okay. So while I thought something terrible had happened, he thought I was making things harder. Right. And I was, unintentionally. So it was just like this terrible, perfect storm of both experiencing stress, neither one of us communicating properly.
SPEAKER_08And neither of you at fault. Yeah. It wasn't anybody who did anything you shouldn't have done.
SPEAKER_03So then I just question what could we have done differently, though? Because we both get in the car. It's long after this trip, and we're just mad.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I you asked that question in the first part of the conversation. I've been thinking about this. What could you have done differently? First of all, I don't I don't know that you either of you did anything, quote, wrong. So there's that. So don't kick yourselves or each other. Could you have texted him? And I yeah, I get it. Like if he was in trouble, he's not going to like stop being in trouble to text you. Right.
SPEAKER_03But in hindsight, if I had said, hey, you safe, he maybe could have kept the customer service people on the line and just texted me back saying stuck on the phone or something. Yeah, probably.
SPEAKER_08You said you waited forever. How long was forever?
SPEAKER_03Oh, I wish I I mean, I think it was by the time I mean it was after I we waited for the bags to come through baggage plane. Right. And he had already left. So I was the last bag that came through. So every person had already picked up their bags. My bag was last. And then I still went and stood outside at passenger pickup for probably 10 more minutes. Okay.
SPEAKER_08So that's yeah, that's a long time. That's a long time. It showed him in the middle of the road, not at the gate.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it didn't show him still in the walking lot. It showed that he it literally said there's an icon that had a car on it. Like he was quote unquote driving and it was in the road.
SPEAKER_08Alright, so I've I think I've got it. This this is what fixes this entire situation. Okay. Okay, and this is not from years of marriage and all this other stuff. You guys are Apple family. You're an Apple family, right?
SPEAKER_03Don't do this. Don't blame Apple.
SPEAKER_08Android, this kind of thing doesn't happen, you know? And travel is is like so fun. You experience new places, you meet new people. Yeah. You do stuff you've never done before. Even when you go to places you have been before, you're still doing new things, and it's just the whole the whole experience is great. But but why does travel have to always pack a headache with your bags?
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah, there's always a little hiccup or something that goes wrong.
Listener Remedy With Packing Spreadsheets
SPEAKER_08You can share the travel headache that sticks out to you when you call or text 800-609-1049. Producer Mike, I give you the floor.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I recently got back from a trip to Texas, which was awesome. Right. But it kind of got started off on the wrong foot. Uh we flew into Austin, so it was a long flight, a couple of hours. And then we get a delay where we're waiting because there's a plane already at our gate.
SPEAKER_03Oh, so you're stuck on the airplane. Okay.
SPEAKER_07And my legs are sore, and so I stood up. You know, I needed to move around a little bit. You did not You were not the stand up before it's your turn, guy. I was like, I'm not mad.
SPEAKER_08I'm disappointed.
SPEAKER_07But but but Josh. There was residue in my seat. There was what? There was residue. I didn't know until I looked down because I had stood up. I th- I thought I'd been sitting on it the whole time.
SPEAKER_08Hold on a second. I thought waiting at the gate was the headache. The residue was the headache.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you didn't see you didn't see this before you sat down on the airplane. It was something you noticed at the end of the flight?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, not until I stood up. So you had been in it the whole time. What was that?
SPEAKER_08Dare I ask what was the what was it?
SPEAKER_07Well, I didn't investigate it too much because I didn't want to know.
SPEAKER_08Okay. That's a full body ache. Uh, I was just asking about a headache. You can share yours for your last travel experience. Call or text 800-609-1049. Don't ever say residue again. Good morning, Renee. Do you have a travel headache that stands out to you amongst your life's travels?
SPEAKER_00Actually, I have a remedy that keeps me from getting the headache. Ooh.
SPEAKER_03Love it.
SPEAKER_08This is also good because uplifting and encouraging. Let's spin this positive. Go.
SPEAKER_00My daughter and I, we both have spreadsheets, Excel spreadsheets.
SPEAKER_03Um, you are speaking my love language. Yeah, you do. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it.
SPEAKER_04I gotta get out of here.
SPEAKER_03Okay, tell me what the spreadsheets are for. Go into detail here.
SPEAKER_00Uh, I'll use my daughter, for instance, because they go to Virginia Beach every year. Yes. She has the spreadsheet for packing her, packing the kids. Love it. Then she has another spreadsheet of food order. So she does a click it list. Yes. So she can pick up the food when she gets down there. Yeah, and then they have everything to take for the pool. I mean, and the beach, everything.
SPEAKER_08They just don't you guys like adventure anymore?
SPEAKER_03There is so much room for adventure, but now you don't have to have headaches. That's the whole point. Right. This frees you up for the adventure. Yes, Renee, you are speaking life into me right now.
SPEAKER_08Listen, since I had to deal with where's the pacifier, I want everyone else to have to deal with where's the pacifier.
SPEAKER_00And we also pack extras of those.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_03Renee, this is why we're friends. This is why we're in this river family together. I love it so much.
SPEAKER_00Yes. We we know each other's love language, and we just we we are soulmates. Yes.
SPEAKER_08You might have heard this on the show earlier this week, and Hannah and I still don't understand what it is or understand why it exists.
SPEAKER_05Would you translate that, please?
SPEAKER_08So, producer Mike, our resident Gen Z friend. What is mogging? M-O-G-G-I-N-G mugging.
SPEAKER_03Uh, these words are getting weirder.
SPEAKER_07Why? So mogging means to outshine somebody else or a group, whether it's, you know, maybe an appearance, maybe like the way you dress, maybe a skill that you have.
SPEAKER_08Okay. So m so mogging is you're better than someone at something or by looks. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07You're standing out in a good way.
SPEAKER_01I feel like a a throwback version of that would be like peacocking. Did you ever hear that?
SPEAKER_08Like strutting around. Yeah. Okay. I I suppose. Maybe. I never like in Peacock is a streaming service now, so that doesn't work anymore.
SPEAKER_01But mogging. It sounds like someone's being mugged and it's a muggy day. Mossy. It's very gross.
SPEAKER_03So where did this come from? Like what's yeah, why did this start?
SPEAKER_07So it originally came from the acronym AMOG, and which stands for Alpha Male of the Group.
SPEAKER_03Oh my goodness. I didn't even know that existed. So this phrase came from an acronym of Gen Z that no one above Millennial even knew about.
SPEAKER_01Millennial don't know any nobody knows.
SPEAKER_08We don't need it. We don't want it. We didn't ask for it. We didn't ask for it, but it's.
SPEAKER_03Say the acronym? It's AMG.
SPEAKER_08Agog, yeah. A-M-O-G. That sounds like one of the bad kingdoms in the Revelation, the book of the Bible.
SPEAKER_03I thought it was like uh Lord of the Rings term. Amog. Ag the dwarf. I don't know.
SPEAKER_08In the uh in the Hobbit movies, I think that guy's called Agog.
SPEAKER_03Maybe that's why it sounds familiar.
SPEAKER_08What's the spider's name? Uh that is uh I don't know. I can't remember.
SPEAKER_03Oh, it sounded for some reason that's what my brain went to. She lobbyed. That's not close at all. Okay, so mogging though, this new Gen Z phrase came from Amog that stands for alpha male what?
SPEAKER_07Of the group.
SPEAKER_01Of the group. And mogging now means you're showing somebody up.
SPEAKER_08I will say this. I had no idea that we were gonna get to talk about Lord of the Rings with this, though.
SPEAKER_02Are you now more okay with that?
SPEAKER_08I am because for those films, nobody was mogging more than Aragorn.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's true, but he deserved it. He was the chief mogger. Everybody else was moging. Are you a mogger? Is that is that a is that a term?
SPEAKER_07I guess it is now.
SPEAKER_03Look at that chief mogger.
SPEAKER_07News that'll make you go.
SPEAKER_03Wait, wait, wait. What? Josh, what in this wacky world did you find today?
SPEAKER_08Well, Hannah, you're an athlete, right? Like you go to the gym, you do the things. Uh have you seen people holding onto a chin-up bar and just hanging there?
SPEAKER_03Uh yes, and I do question it. Right, right. I've wondered too.
SPEAKER_08It's like, have you gotten tired? Are you doing chin-ups and there are no more? But no, that's an exercise maneuver. Okay. It's called a dead hang, which I don't like the name of that, but okay, I get it. And Ann Esselston from Ohio is the best one at it ever. Really? She's the best senior citizen at it ever. Okay. She's 90, and she completed a Guinness World Record dead hang time of two minutes and 52 seconds.
SPEAKER_03Let's go! That is a long time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08To be hanging there. I think of like the strongest men competitions where they're just standing there holding boulders with their arms. That is so hard to do. And she's just hanging there almost three minutes, like just chilling.
SPEAKER_03So impressed and love that it's an Ohioan.
Overthinking Parenting And NYC Navigation
SPEAKER_08Yeah, right, exactly. She says it took focus training, and Anne was just the gal because she's a holistic cook. She travels with her daughter doing like kitchen cooking tips and things like that. And she's played and coached 10 different sports in her life.
SPEAKER_03She is an athlete. Wait, what are you doing?
unknownWhat are you doing?
SPEAKER_08I'm installing a dead hang bar in the studio. No. Because I figure if I'm gonna as a senior citizen, if I'm going to beat her record in 45 years. I need to start training right now. And it's so cool. You see it happen before your very eyes, and still stop overthinking it. These thoughts of an overthinker brought to you by my son's maps app. Oh, okay. Uh Drew and I, my oldest son and I, we were in New York City. I mentioned it uh earlier this week. He navigated the city like he's lived there for years. A pro. It was amazing. It was like one of my favorite parts of the trip is the fact that he got us everywhere we needed to go. He was tied to his maps app. But I'm the dad!
SPEAKER_03I know.
SPEAKER_08Shouldn't I be doing the navigating? Shouldn't I be showing him how to do this and not the other way around? And I will say I did try. I opened up my maps app, and I couldn't figure it out for anything. It was color-coded. I'm talking mainly, mainly about the subway. Okay, sure. Color-coded, which is not fair because I can't tell you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you're color deficient, so that's working against you.
SPEAKER_08There were letters for the subway train lines everywhere, and they didn't make any sense. E and Q are the same thing sometimes, R and L are sometimes the same, but they're not. Okay. And I was overwhelmed and confused. So Drew did it. And I was I was disappointed in myself.
Teens Pretend Trolls For A Kid
SPEAKER_03But maybe that means you have raised a a full-grown man who's ready to leave the house for college next year. That's awesome. That's a sign of great fatherhood.
SPEAKER_08Fantastic. But I thought if I'm disappointed in myself, what if Drew is disappointed in me? Like how how lame is how lame am I? I mean, it's like those schoolyard arguments. My dad can beat up your dad. Well, Drew would have to say, my dad will get lost on the way to the fight. Which actually, now that I think about it, that's okay. That's just fine.
SPEAKER_03I think fighting's dumb anyway. And here's a happy heart story for you. A dad said he was walking to the park with his three-year-old daughter Allie.
SPEAKER_08That's cute enough.
SPEAKER_03I know. And on their way there, they always cross this little bridge, and she calls it the troll bridge. I know. One day they get there and there's this group of angsty teenagers, is how they're described at first, hanging out, hanging out around the bridge. And the little girl says again, Daddy, the troll bridge. One of those teens overhears her and immediately tells all their friends to start pretending to be trolls. Oh no, they're gonna scare her? Well, they start snarling and splashing in the water that's underneath. And then one of the teens hands little Allie a Harry Potter style wand and says, Time to defeat the trolls!
SPEAKER_02No way!
Sunburned Scalp And SPF Reality
SPEAKER_03So this three-year-old goes running to the bottom of the bridge and just starts waving the wand around. And every time she points the wand, the the trolls would dramatically fall into the water like they've been defeated. That's so good. People who were in the park started cheering, and Allie had the biggest smile on her face as she defeated that final troll. These teenagers probably thought it was just a silly fun moment. But for this little girl, it's a memory that she's going to carry forever. And that's a happy heart story for you. Your body has betrayed you, and it's just rude.
SPEAKER_05What happened?
SPEAKER_03I just got back from family vacation down in Florida, and in my youth, I was invincible. The sun could not burn me.
SPEAKER_08Oh, I see.
SPEAKER_03My sin just soaked it in, and I was bronzed like a perfect tater tot. Dream come true in my youth.
SPEAKER_05Now you now like this.
SPEAKER_03Yes, that's it. Where I used to get away with like 15 SPF. Now, if it's not 50, I'm frying. So I I did a really good job last week. All week I used the heavy duty stuff. I reapplied like crazy.
SPEAKER_08And you did, like your skin did take to the sun. Like you got some tan.
SPEAKER_03Like, yeah, right. I'm not like a tomato at this point. My toe would touch the water and I'd reapply. I gotta make sure we're good here. And then, and then I made the error that every woman will be like, you novice, you dum-dum. I braided my hair into two French braids. Okay. Which means I had a part line down the center of my head.
SPEAKER_08Which you don't normally have.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_08Okay.
SPEAKER_03It was completely exposed to the fireball in the sky. And now, oh my goodness, now it's so gross. I am flaking. My scalp looks like Parmesan cheese.
SPEAKER_08That's nasty.
SPEAKER_03That's not snow. That's hair, burnt, crispy, scalp skin.
SPEAKER_08Head and shoulders is not helping you with this. No!
SPEAKER_02Lesson learned.
SPEAKER_08And you might need reminded today. I know I need reminded at times. Jesus is going to take care of it. That's good. Yes, the future providing for you purpose and hope. But Jesus is also gonna take care of the revenge you feel when something happens against you. We want immediate get backs all the time. You know, it's like eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, or whatever. Like that's in the Bible, it's Old Testament, but it wasn't licensed to get back at people. I have to remember that. It was more saying the justice punishment for what someone has done needs to be an equal kind of thing. That's how we build our justice type system and all of that. I've got to, it's like I'm talking to my dog. Drop it.
SPEAKER_04Drop it.
You Are Wanted By God
SPEAKER_08God says vengeance belongs to him, he will repay. Jesus is going to take care of it. And before we think, oh goody, I can't wait to watch this. That's not what it's about. It's about me letting go of my self-righteousness and pride and letting God be God. My job is to love him and love people, which is hard to do when I'm plotting revenge. That's not part of a love relationship with anyone else. It really is freeing when I think about it. And if you consider it, taking that vengeance away is a burden. Off our shoulders because Jesus is going to take care of it. And you know, God is so good. I could stop there and it's a truth bomb. We play the song and we move on, but he's so good, he'll use any means necessary to speak to us. I remember when we got the first photos back from the uh planet or dwarf planet or whatever you Pluto.
SPEAKER_01Sure.
SPEAKER_08And there is a heart emoji on it.
SPEAKER_01What?
SPEAKER_08Don't you ever see that? Like it's I don't know what color the planet is, but there's this whitish heart shape.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna have to look that up.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, and it's so it's like at creation, God knew in the 2000s we'd finally get a picture of it. So he put his emoji on there at the beginning of everything just to say I love you in that way, too. Yeah, so you're looking at it now?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. So it's not little.
SPEAKER_08No, it's it's a big one. Also, uh completely unrelated. If you tilt it sideways, it kind of looks like Snoopy. But anyway, I like the heart. Back to the Lord. Uh so on a smaller scale, um, God used this to be to speak to me one day. We have a little marquee sign in the hallway here at the river, and it sparked joy and peace to me one day. So I put this little weird phrase in a journal I'm keeping for my kids. I call it Thoughts, prayers, and observations. This is entry number 88. God is not trying to hide from you. Pray and talk to him, read his words written to you, and listen to his voice. He has all the answers. Everything is figure outable. These are just some thoughts, prayers, and observations.
SPEAKER_03He created you because he wanted you. I heard something at church that just really stuck with me. The pastor said, the universe was created by a God who needed nothing from it, but wanted everything for it.
SPEAKER_08I love the contrast between need and want. Yes.
How To Listen And Leave A Rating
SPEAKER_03I've really been thinking that about that because if God needed nothing, then that means he didn't create you because he was lacking something. He didn't create you because he was lonely or incomplete. God was already fully God. He created you because he wanted you. And I don't know about you, but sometimes I slip into this mindset where I feel like I have to prove my value to God, to others, even to myself. So if I'm I'm productive enough or kind enough or faithful and fun enough, then maybe I'll finally measure up. However, in the Bible, in Zephaniah, it says, The Lord your God is with you. He takes great delight in you, he rejoices over you with singing. The God who created the entire universe delights in you. So if today feels heavy, or if you're wondering if you're enough, the wonderful blessing is you're not here because God needed something from you. You don't have to measure up. You're here because the God who needed nothing still wanted you.
