A Five Cent Coffee Moment
SPEAKER_11Here's what to expect on this week's episode of the River Morning Show weekly podcast.
SPEAKER_03I cannot believe what I said to the barista. I was like, damn, just keep the change. It's five cents. And I said and I quote, don't spend it all in one place.
SPEAKER_01Dobb it. No, you didn't. I am 90.
Beating The Heat In Ohio
SPEAKER_03Thanks for pressing play on this podcast, being a part of The River. You can find more podcasts, by the way, at riverradio.com. Click on demand. Hannah, what would your advice be? You're a person who loves the heat. And where we are recording is Ohio. When we are recording, it is hot. So what is your advice for making it through the heat?
SPEAKER_11Well, it's a little bit of a weird year for me because there's a bun in the oven, so I'm like a million degrees. But normally, one, enjoy the AC whenever you want it. Like just stay inside if you don't like it.
SPEAKER_06Thank you.
SPEAKER_11But then also, like popsicles, I love an iced coffee. Always a real like those are the things you can't enjoy well during the cold seasons. Okay. So I just encourage you to find a pool of popsicle and an iced coffee.
SPEAKER_03That sounds really good. That's better than my advice because also at this recording, Canada is blowing its smoke at us. And so I was just going to hide under a blanket on the AC vent in my house and look angrily outside.
SPEAKER_11You know, with the air quality, that's fair.
When Pets Get Jealous
SPEAKER_11The green-eyed jealousy monster is not reserved for just humans. Your fur babies can get a bit of that envy bug too.
SPEAKER_03Completely.
SPEAKER_11So does your pet get jealous? And if so, how do they show it? You can call or text to share 800-609-1049. This is a recent development in our in our home. Okay. So you know I have Fish the Cat and Bear the dog. Bear is under a year old. And we're learning that Fish the cat is not allowed to hang out with my husband.
SPEAKER_03Oh, really?
SPEAKER_11Bear is not for it. Bear has decided that Chris, my husband, is his human.
SPEAKER_03And he's laid claim to your husband.
SPEAKER_11Absolutely. And he's not, he is the friendliest dog on the planet. But the second the cat starts to like walk towards Chris or rub, rub on his leg a little bit, try to play, Bear's entire muzzle is in between Chris. It's like no cat. Absolutely not. And he's 105 pounds. Fish is like 10. Yeah. So fish doesn't stand a chance. But it just means I get more fish time.
SPEAKER_03And really, fish is your cat and bear is Chris's dog.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, that's not what we, you know, planned for. And I'm sad that Bear just maybe I'm the jealous one. Bear just loves Chris.
SPEAKER_03It's a river morning show where Hannah discovers things about herself.
SPEAKER_11Wow, this was very therapeutic. Okay, that'll be $150. I know, I know. But Bear becomes a wall between the cat and my husband. He says not today, or if Fish tries to do the little um McBiscuits on Chris in bed, bear just immediately rolls over on top of Chris.
SPEAKER_03Amazing mush.
SPEAKER_11Like if one of us is gonna smush the human, it has to be bear. It must be bear. Josh, you have a dog, little Ollie. Does he get jealous?
SPEAKER_03He does. Um he gets very jealous anytime I show my wife any kind of affection.
SPEAKER_11Oh no.
SPEAKER_03Like I will hug her in the kitchen. He will run from wherever he is, he knows that it's happening, and he just barks at us.
SPEAKER_12He doesn't want in.
SPEAKER_03Because we've done that too. We've picked him up and be like, okay, we'll put you in the middle of this hug. And he's like, no, get me out of here. And he doesn't like want her to go sit so he can sit next to her. He just does not want us to like each other.
SPEAKER_11He's upset that the attention isn't on him. Even if he doesn't want to be in it, it means you're not looking at him or petting him.
SPEAKER_03If he doesn't have attention, no one should have attention. Exactly. Yes. You know what? Fair, Ollie. Fair. He's probably listening right now. Do not encourage him, please.
SPEAKER_11Does your pet get jealous? And if so, how do they show it? Call or text to share. 800-609-1049. Jealousy comes for everyone. It's come for you at one point. And it's also come for your fur baby.
SPEAKER_03It's such a natural instinctual reaction.
SPEAKER_11I know, but it is somehow so adorable when it's your furry pet. Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_03Because you know, there's no like they don't have any other attitudes besides I love you.
SPEAKER_11Yes.
SPEAKER_03And no one else can.
SPEAKER_11Right? That's what we're currently going through with Bear, our dog, and cat uh and fish, the cat. And Bear wants nothing to do with fish getting on my husband's lap or trying to play. And there he's very nice about it, but he puts his huge body in between the two of them.
SPEAKER_03And he is he's human-sized, massive, and then your cat is a cat. And so he does not stand a chance.
SPEAKER_11Not at all. And it also just brings me flashbacks to when I had Murphy, my German Shepherd mix, and I would babysit my sister's dog. They would play this jealousy game of who whose body can be touching the human. And so one would lay on top of you, and they're not small dogs, and the other would dive bomb and slide underneath the dog that's currently on top of the human. So the human just turns into a pancake.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so can you imagine as warm as you are now because of the baby inside you? Oh, I would have two. Yeah. We'd be like, 911 has been called again.
SPEAKER_11Yes. The dogs are jealous.
SPEAKER_03All the screaming in here.
SPEAKER_11I know, I know. But they're so cute and they do it because they have so much love in their heart. You can call or text to share that time your pet got jealous or when they get jealous, 800-609-1049. I know a few friends are chiming in on the River Morning Show Facebook group. You can also chime in there. Producer Mike, what are our friends saying?
SPEAKER_02Dee said when they're sitting on the sofa and her husband leans in to like kiss her goodnight, their little chihuahua starts to whine and tries to put her face between their faces. They're basically stealing the kiss. Yes.
SPEAKER_03I appreciate the whine response as opposed to like full fangs and like don't you touch.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, those chihuahuas, they're feisty. So that's a patient pup right there.
SPEAKER_02Terrifying. Julie said if their dog gets attention, the cat's the one crying and the cat crowds in. But then if the cat ends up climbing up on their lap, then it's the dog who has to as well. Of course. Of course. Yeah.
SPEAKER_11So hopefully it's a lap-sized dog.
SPEAKER_03Well, the dog size doesn't matter. Do you ever get done with like an interaction and you're
The Barista Line That Aged Me
SPEAKER_03like, why? Why? Why did I why? How old are you? I'm not telling you. I cannot believe what I said to the barista.
SPEAKER_11Oh no. I cannot believe it. Oh, this this could go many wrong ways.
SPEAKER_03I went to the drive-thru. I used all the money left on my app, so I had to finish paying with cash. It's fine. I had cash. It's fine. There's gonna be a little change. And I was like, yeah, just keep the change. It's five cents. Okay. I I I told him keep the five cents. Yeah. To which I immediately thought, what a dumb thing. He thinks he's gonna think. I'm tipping him five cents. Oh. To which I then tried to fix the problem that was only in my head, and I said, and I quote, don't spend it all in one place.
SPEAKER_01Stop it! No, you didn't.
SPEAKER_03I am 90. I am an old man. I've got my pants pulled up to my diaphragm.
SPEAKER_11And you know, you know, now in today's world, five cents is the equivalent to a penny because the penny is no longer in circulation, right? So you basically said, here's a penny. I should have said fun with it.
SPEAKER_03I don't, no thanks, I don't need it. You know, because I was just trying to be, I don't, I don't care about a nickel, but I made it sound like Yeah. Here's a penny, here's a here's five cents.
SPEAKER_11It was fine until don't spend it all in one place. It was fine because people get like, yeah, you don't want a nickel back.
SPEAKER_10Like that I look at this photograph.
SPEAKER_03I don't thank you. I don't want nickel back either. Well, that was fun.
SPEAKER_07It was absolutely the don't spend it all in one place. That the gotcha and uh your your gray beard is showing.
SPEAKER_03Thanks. How did you know you were getting irreversibly old? Call or text 800-609-1049.
SPEAKER_12How old are you?
SPEAKER_03I'm not telling. I knew I was getting old when I told the barista when I left my five cents of change. I said, don't spend it all in one place. Looked at myself in the rearview mirror in the car.
SPEAKER_09I'm like, you doofus! What are you saying that for? That that's bad.
SPEAKER_03And then I went home, I had some tapioca, and I laid down for a nap. Well, that sounds lovely, actually. It sounds very very pleasant.
SPEAKER_02Producer Mike, we got a text in who said what about getting old. Nate said, I knew I was getting old because I've really started to care about the condition of my furnace filters. Yes!
SPEAKER_11Absolutely! Everyone should be concerned about that. Also, did you know you can buy them scented?
SPEAKER_03Uh what? You can. What?
SPEAKER_11They can be scented. So as things pass through or don't pass through, there's a a slight tinge of vanilla or lavender.
SPEAKER_03Don't say scented and then tinge, okay? Tinge is a slight aroma.
SPEAKER_11Thank you.
SPEAKER_03That is so much better.
SPEAKER_11My thesaurus and my brain had to work really hard on that.
Tweets Of The Week Break
SPEAKER_03People are funny out there, and I'm glad they post it. Tweets of the week. This is from Cindy. Did they invent cold foam because people were embarrassed to order coffee with whipped cream?
SPEAKER_11Uh, I feel like cold foam has a lot more flavors, different options.
SPEAKER_03That's true. It is, it's not the same thing, but I get what she's saying.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, yeah, it's like you're fancy and gruel instead of give me whipped cream.
SPEAKER_03Alright, anyway, uh, from Juliana. I've been trying to improve some vegan recipes, but so far all I've come up with is add a dead animal.
SPEAKER_10Okay, well, that did not make it sound appetizing, but I'm with her.
SPEAKER_03I don't want to I don't want to eat a living one. Not today. Uh, this is from Peter, tweets of the week. Once upon a time, a bored caveman rubbed two sticks together until it lit up. And we've progressed now to the point where I gotta do battle with Excel from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.
SPEAKER_06Oh no. Yeah, that's unfortunate.
SPEAKER_03That escalated quickly.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it did.
SPEAKER_03Technology exploding. From Megan, I'm sorry for the things I said when the AC was broken.
SPEAKER_11Are you though? Because I mean, I I get it. Like I get real feisty real fast.
SPEAKER_03So what you're saying is uh mama's not apologizing.
SPEAKER_08No, the AC was off. Absolutely not.
SPEAKER_03Tweets of the week, last but not least, this is from Kelly. Why is it girl cats get named after ancient goddesses? And boy cats get named after Taco Bell menu items. I come to my house, this is Cleopatra, and this is cheesy Gordita Crush.
SPEAKER_00Yes!
SPEAKER_03Dude, you've got a problem. You've got a problem. And I mean Hannah, and Hannah's not a dude. So the only other dude in this room is producer Mike, and dude, you've got a problem.
SPEAKER_02It could be described that
Producer Mike’s Roller Coaster Numbers
SPEAKER_02way.
SPEAKER_03Yes, and I am describing it that way because if uh if you are a member of the River Morning Show Facebook group, first of all, if you're not, go become a member. Yay! Uh secondly, you probably saw over the weekend, producer Mike rode his 299th different roller coaster. Don't mind. So close to 300. I have not ridden 299 roller coaster rides in my life. No! We spent every summer going to Cedar Point when I was a kid. And you've ridden 299 different coasters. Different ones, yep. How many rides have you taken total?
SPEAKER_02Uh 1,758. How do you know that number? I have an app for that.
SPEAKER_11What in the world? How many times have you re-seen your like curly fries or your pizza?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Zero times. Exactly. How many times? If you know this off the top of the hat, I'm leaving this room. How many times have you ridden around the earth? Do you know a length?
SPEAKER_02Not quite that far, but I could figure it out pretty fast. Golly. That keeps track of how many miles of coaster track I've been on.
SPEAKER_07That's wild. Wow.
SPEAKER_03Well, okay, so a problem, yes, but also congratulations, I suppose. Thanks. Yeah, that's exactly it. You said you're close to the 300th different roller coaster. When is that happening?
SPEAKER_02That is happening this weekend. No way! Yes. Like you're you're you're doing it? I'm doing it this weekend.
SPEAKER_11Do you have a specific roller coaster picked out for the 300th?
SPEAKER_02So I'm taking a trip down to Atlanta with my friends because there's this one coaster that's closing.
SPEAKER_04Oh.
SPEAKER_02And it's supposed to be one of the best ones in the country. And we're like, we're not missing this.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so it's you are nearly to the vintage stage of it. Are they closing it because it's old or what?
SPEAKER_02No, they're closing it. I guess just the park couldn't afford to keep it open. Oh wow. Yeah, which is sad. What a bummer. Makes me want to cry.
SPEAKER_03Okay, well, we'll have to see if A, producer Mike survives, and B, we'll have to get a full recap on ride number 300. Now, did you see that they are making a roller coaster at Hawking Hills? I know, I'm so excited about that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_11What like does it take you through the trails or something?
SPEAKER_03Probably not, because that would be a hazard.
SPEAKER_11I don't know. What's the point of a roller coaster at Hawking Hill?
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's like one of those mountain coasters that's like built onto the mountain and it follows the terrain. Okay, that's what I was saying. Well, yeah, but it's not gonna be on the main.
SPEAKER_11No, I know, but I meant like it's supposed to be a six-minute ride.
SPEAKER_03There you go.
SPEAKER_11Of course not.
SPEAKER_03Well, listen, anyway, so I do I do know this much. Producer Mike loves roller coasters. And this explains why you never have the car windows down while you're driving. Your arms and legs are always inside. Everybody remembers their firsts, like their first love, their first day of school, their first bacon.
SPEAKER_11You remember your first bacon?
SPEAKER_03That's when I knew I was really living. My youngest son is experiencing a first right now, and uh it's it's his first car.
SPEAKER_11Oh, it's so exciting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Uh, we've each got a story behind our first car, too. It had its own personality, so you can share it. Call or text. 800-609-1049. His first car is older than he is. He just turned 16. The car just turned 20.
SPEAKER_11All right.
SPEAKER_03It's a Honda Civic, and it smelled like a dead animal.
SPEAKER_11Okay, first I was gonna be like, good for him. Hondas go forever. I don't love the dead animal.
SPEAKER_03Well, the mouse did not go forever.
First Car Stories And Strange Smells
SPEAKER_03That's all I'm saying. Uh, they got in the engine. Thankfully, when we bought it, they were out of the engine. Uh, we changed out the air filters and voila! No more nasty.
SPEAKER_11Brand new. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Uh, his car also rattles like a loose spoon somewhere in the engine, but our mechanic, who we trust implicitly, uh told us that it's just a shoddy repair job of something that doesn't need fixed.
SPEAKER_11Okay.
SPEAKER_03So he can turn the music up over it. That's the thing. Eventually, like when he saves, when my son saves a few hundred bucks, he can have the guy fix it. Sure. If you're tired of the under there, all that. Uh so share about your first car. Hannah, yours smelled like Jesus, right?
SPEAKER_09Totally. Close enough. Yeah. It smelled like Chick-fil-A. Yeah, it's the same thing. Jesus, shit. Same thing. The Lord's chicken.
SPEAKER_11Yes. My twin brother and I shared our first car. We went went in on it together. It was a 1996 RAV 4. And both of us worked at Chick-fil-A at the time. So that thing was sitting at the Polaris Mall every day, really. 24-7 for the most part. Between the two of us, and we'd walk in and out of Chick-fil-A. We'd have that grease on our shoes. We'd bring home Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_11And so any friend that got in that car after school or on the weekends was like, That's so mean.
SPEAKER_03Chicken. It's so cruel. You needed to like you should have like revamped that car so the glove box was a little toaster oven.
SPEAKER_11Yes.
SPEAKER_03And anytime you had a guest.
SPEAKER_11I mean the glove box was full of Polynesian and Chick-fil-A sauce. So we were part way there. Next best thing.
SPEAKER_03Tell the story about your first car and the thing that gave it the most personality. Call or text 800-609-1049. Let's hit the Wayback Machine. Remember your first car? My son, my youngest son, just got his.
SPEAKER_11Oh man, so grown up.
SPEAKER_03Dirt cheap. It's a Honda, so it's gonna go forever. Oh yeah. And it's older than he is. Smelled like a dead mouse when we got it. But we changed the filters, the air filters, and everything's fine.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_03So it's gonna be great. Uh you can call or text, share about yours. 800-609-1049.
SPEAKER_02Producer Mike got some texts in. Jason said my first car, the driver's side door, didn't work, so I had to crawl in and out the passenger side. Oh no man. It was definitely awkward to have to ask someone to get out so I could get out. No kidding.
SPEAKER_11I feel like it's more awkward just to watch someone crawl.
SPEAKER_03He could have done it a lot cooler and like slid across the hood like they did in the Dukes of Hazard and then crawl across.
SPEAKER_06Oh my goodness. Would have been like sweet in the beginning.
SPEAKER_02Jody said my first car was in my family, and it was an old Chevet. It was worn down by the time it got to me, so my dad decided to paint it to make it look better.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, oh no.
SPEAKER_02He painted it a dark brown with a lighter brown zigzag striped sides. No. I literally looked like I was driving a small turd down the road.
unknownJeffy!
SPEAKER_01You poor thing.
SPEAKER_03Hey, listen, listen. We were all thinking it. We were she just said it.
SPEAKER_11I don't know if I had gotten there yet, but it was just there.
SPEAKER_03My first car was like it was from 1985. It was a Chrysler New Yorker. And it was, but when it was new, this thing was like top line NASA. It was all digital.
SPEAKER_11Okay. And it had a voice.
SPEAKER_03It would tell you if you left your lights on. Really? It would say if your door was ajar while you were driving. It would tell you.
SPEAKER_11Like a voice would through. This is like Alexa pre-Alexa.
SPEAKER_03It really was. You couldn't interact with it. And sometimes it was it was wrong and I was annoying. And I'm like, I'm arguing with my car.
SPEAKER_11So it is like Alexa. A little bit.
SPEAKER_03Thanks for calling. Uh Jerry, what uh what gave your first car that personality?
SPEAKER_05Alright, I'm gonna age myself here, but it was a dodge, a green dodge aspect of that.
SPEAKER_04Oh wow.
SPEAKER_05And it when you turned it off, it was it had its own personality. It wanted to keep going, I guess. Yeah, it was like the ride is not over, man.
SPEAKER_03Sit down.
SPEAKER_05Now, did you happen to have a name for your car? Uh yes, it was a green bomb because everybody got into it. We took it to the mall. We ran it until everything fell off.
SPEAKER_03The motor was still at the salvage yard and they're like, ma'am, it's still kicking. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Exactly right.
SPEAKER_03News that'll make you go.
SPEAKER_11Wait, wait, wait. What? Josh, what in this wild world did you find today?
SPEAKER_03We're getting nearer and nearer to this. You know how the Ohio State Fair has butter sculptures every year? Well, uh, how about more art, but this time made out of peanut butter? Go on.
SPEAKER_08I love it.
SPEAKER_03Don't get too excited. Oh. A Dutch artist has on display his masterpiece made of 800 pounds of peanut butter. What? That's a floor.
SPEAKER_11Why?
SPEAKER_03People step it on it? No, you can't step on it, but all the sculpture is is like half an inch of peanut butter spread across the floor.
SPEAKER_11Stop it.
SPEAKER_03That's it.
SPEAKER_11Are
Peanut Butter Art And More Tweets
SPEAKER_11there designs in the floor?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_11So they just kind of got a giant knife and scraped it across the floor. Smeared it there.
SPEAKER_03Okay. It reminds me of the guy who was at an art studio, accidentally left his glasses on a bench, and people were like, ooh, ah.
SPEAKER_11This must be worth millions.
SPEAKER_03This is supposed to be art.
SPEAKER_11Well, that's just silly. Just sounds like a waste of peanut butter now.
SPEAKER_03And I agree with you. So follow me here.
SPEAKER_00Um, so now it's time to celebrate.
SPEAKER_03We just do food sculptures better here.
SPEAKER_11Absolutely. Have you seen those butter sculptures? I know! They're like giant cows.
SPEAKER_03Little Ohio, better than the entirety of the Netherlands. That's all I'm gonna say. People look funny out there, and I'm glad they post it. Tweets of the week. This is from Cindy. Did they invent cold foam because people were embarrassed to order coffee with whipped?
SPEAKER_11Uh, I feel like cold film has a lot more flavors, different options.
SPEAKER_03That's true. It is, it's not the same thing, but I get what she's saying.

SPEAKER_03Alright, anyway, uh, from Juliana. I've been trying to improve some vegan recipes, but so far all I've come up with is add a dead animal.
SPEAKER_10Okay, well, that did not make it sound appetizing, but I'm with her.

SPEAKER_06Yeah, it did.
SPEAKER_03Technology exploding. From Megan, I'm sorry for the things I said when the AC was broken.

SPEAKER_03So what you're saying is uh mama's not apologizing.
SPEAKER_08No, the AC was off. Absolutely not.
SPEAKER_03Tweets of the week, last but not least, this is from Kelly. Why is it girl cats get named after ancient goddesses and boycats get named after Taco Bell menu items? I come to my house. This is Cleopatra, and this is cheesy Gordita Crush. Have you ever dropped the mic?
SPEAKER_11Like, like a figurative one?
SPEAKER_03I'm glad you asked. I'm not talking about on stage where it like goes and then. Not like that. I'm talking about like you've had the opportunity to say the thing, and everybody stands mouths agape, and they're just awed by your wisdom. Yeah, me either.
SPEAKER_09I'm like staring plank game, like I don't like it.
SPEAKER_03I have tried and I have failed. I fail miserably when I try those mic drop moments. That's not in my skill set. And even though we live in a mic drop kind of world, ultimately I'm glad I can't pull that off because it's really not a good look. You don't make anybody feel better, and you usually show yourself
Why Mic Drops Miss The Point
SPEAKER_03to be kind of a doofus when you're trying to act like that. And I hope my kids aren't able to do this either. At least I hope they won't try to do it. I put the idea in this journal I'm keeping for my kids, by the way. I call it Thoughts, Prayers, and Observations. This is entry number 19. Rather than being rude to make a point and feeling pretty good about yourself after you do it, be polite. And in doing so, point to Jesus. These are just some thoughts, prayers, and observations.
SPEAKER_11Here's a happy heart story for you. There's a four-year-old boy named Roman who every morning he wakes up, goes sits in his front yard, says hello, and waves to every neighbor and stranger that walks by. He's an old man dressed as a young man. He's so cute. And what people didn't realize at first is that Roman had been feeling pretty lonely. His parents separated. Oh. And his dad moved away. A lot of his family lived in other states. So this was kind of his way of connecting with others all by himself. He thought of it all on his own. That's adorable. I know. And one neighbor decided to do more than just wave
A Lonely Kid Who Waves Hello
SPEAKER_11back. He walked across the street and introduced himself, started spending time with Roman. The other neighbors joined in, and before long, people just started showing up to Roman's soccer games and swimming lessons, even to his preschool events. And when Roman had his birthday party, all he wanted were all of his neighbors to show up. Most importantly, the senior citizens. He wanted all of them there. And Roman's simple habit of saying hello brought together about a dozen neighbors who barely knew each other before. This is so good. One of the neighbors said it best. They said, if the world was like this child, what an awesome, awesome place it would be. I would smile every day if I had people going, hello. Absolutely. I'm already just happy thinking about it, which means that's a happy heart story for you.
