But"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":248.71999999999997,"endTime":255.62,"body":"our primary focus is on those intro level courses."},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":256.21999999999997,"endTime":262.21999999999997,"body":"Another thing that makes learning assistants"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":256.21999999999997,"endTime":262.21999999999997,"body":"different is that they have ongoing weekly"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":262.21999999999997,"endTime":269.15,"body":"pedagogical training, which a different student who"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":262.21999999999997,"endTime":269.15,"body":"might be helping during class doesn't necessarily"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":269.18,"endTime":277.1,"body":"know how to help someone learn. They don't have"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":332.35999999999996,"endTime":338.39,"body":"to rely on the students to come to an additional"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":338.99,"endTime":346.19,"body":"session outside of class that might just not be"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":338.99,"endTime":346.19,"body":"accessible for some students. The other thing that"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":346.19,"endTime":352.07,"body":"makes a difference is that learning assistants meet"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":346.19,"endTime":352.07,"body":"with faculty every week to do a prep session, so"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":352.07,"endTime":357.14,"body":"they're supposed to meet with their faculty mentor"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":352.07,"endTime":357.14,"body":"for an hour each week, and that's to go over content."},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":357.14,"endTime":361.19,"body":"But it's also to talk about things that are going on"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":357.14,"endTime":361.19,"body":"in the classroom, different students who are"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":361.19,"endTime":369.40999999999997,"body":"struggling or teams that maybe aren't clicking and"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":361.19,"endTime":369.40999999999997,"body":"some LAs, too,will help prepare a material come up"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":369.40999999999997,"endTime":372.02,"body":"with new activities and things to try."},{"speaker":"Derek Bruff","startTime":374.21,"endTime":375.97999999999996,"body":"Wow. I started here at FGCU in fall of"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":397.49,"endTime":404.9,"body":"2020. So it was like pandemic time. So classes were"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":397.49,"endTime":404.9,"body":"all online and everything. And so I took"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":404.9,"endTime":411.91999999999996,"body":"introduction to computer Science my very first"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":404.9,"endTime":411.91999999999996,"body":"semester here, and I had this awesome professor"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":411.91999999999996,"endTime":418.96999999999997,"body":"named Professor Vanselow, who helps with the L.A."},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":411.91999999999996,"endTime":418.96999999999997,"body":"program at FGCU. And after I finished my class, even"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":418.96999999999997,"endTime":423.15999999999997,"body":"though I was a freshman, he said, Katarya, I would"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":418.96999999999997,"endTime":423.15999999999997,"body":"love if you would be in L.A. for my class, like"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":423.16999999999996,"endTime":429.62,"body":"starting next semester. So he asked me to join. He"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":423.16999999999996,"endTime":429.62,"body":"had like several other LAs at the time, helping with"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":429.83,"endTime":434.53999999999996,"body":"his introduction to computer science class. So it"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":429.83,"endTime":434.53999999999996,"body":"was great because I got to learn from them and I"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":434.53999999999996,"endTime":442.15999999999997,"body":"went on to help with that course for five semesters."},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":434.53999999999996,"endTime":442.15999999999997,"body":"So I've helped so and I also I even helped another"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":442.15999999999997,"endTime":447.53,"body":"professor transition into teaching that class, and I"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":442.15999999999997,"endTime":447.53,"body":"helped another professor who taught it for like one"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":447.53,"endTime":453.59,"body":"semester is like an adjunct. So it definitely I"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":447.53,"endTime":453.59,"body":"definitely help like bridge the gap for like people"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":453.59,"endTime":457.7,"body":"who are new to teaching and everything as well. Jus"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":453.59,"endTime":457.7,"body":"because I had that experience with an experienced"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":457.7,"endTime":468.89,"body":"professor and then in I believe it was last, it was"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":457.7,"endTime":468.89,"body":"last fall, right? Dr. Johnson I was I was the"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":468.89,"endTime":474.44,"body":"Learning Assistant Learning Assistant. So basically"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":468.89,"endTime":474.44,"body":"that's the learning assistant for the pedagogy class."},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":474.68,"endTime":480.83,"body":"I know it's kind of silly. We call it the L.A., L.A.,"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":474.68,"endTime":480.83,"body":"I know at UC-Boulder,they have like Super LA LA or"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":480.83,"endTime":486.5,"body":"something. I don't know. It's it's pretty funny."},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":480.83,"endTime":486.5,"body":"They have, like, LAs who help the L.A. LA's, I don't"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":486.5,"endTime":493.49,"body":"know, but we have does L.A. LA's here, so I help"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":486.5,"endTime":493.49,"body":"support the incoming LA's who are learning the"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":493.49,"endTime":500.09,"body":"pedagogy, lessons and everything for the first time."},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":493.49,"endTime":500.09,"body":"And that was great. I've also like been to the"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":500.15,"endTime":504.97999999999996,"body":"Learning Assistant, like the conference that they"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":500.15,"endTime":504.97999999999996,"body":"have at UC Boulder I attended virtually, and we had"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":505.44,"endTime":509.81,"body":"a learning we had like a learning assistant"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":505.44,"endTime":509.81,"body":"conference here at FGCU, and I attended that as well."},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":510.22999999999996,"endTime":517.58,"body":"So it's definitely it's been really helpful to me as"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":510.22999999999996,"endTime":517.58,"body":"a, as a student. It definitely boosted my confidence,"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":517.58,"endTime":523.4,"body":"you know, to be offered such an an important role,"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":517.58,"endTime":523.4,"body":"like not just being an undergraduate student, but"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":523.4,"endTime":529.34,"body":"just, you know, being is my first time in college,"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":523.4,"endTime":529.34,"body":"obviously. So And I'm like away from home for the"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":529.34,"endTime":533.9300000000001,"body":"first time. And, you know, to have someone see me"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":529.34,"endTime":533.9300000000001,"body":"and be like, she has potential, you know, like that"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":533.9300000000001,"endTime":540.95,"body":"really made such a difference for me. And I did go"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":533.9300000000001,"endTime":540.95,"body":"on. So I'm my major software engineering. So I did"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":540.95,"endTime":548.1800000000001,"body":"get an internship with Microsoft in summer of 2022,"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":540.95,"endTime":548.1800000000001,"body":"a I got another one in summer 2023, and I will be"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":548.1800000000001,"endTime":553.5500000000001,"body":"going to work there full time after I graduate. And"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":548.1800000000001,"endTime":553.5500000000001,"body":"so being in L.A. was like my first kind of step into"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":553.5500000000001,"endTime":559.6700000000001,"body":"like getting involved on campus. And I became an"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":553.5500000000001,"endTime":559.6700000000001,"body":"officer in software engineering club around the same"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":559.6700000000001,"endTime":565.73,"body":"time. And, you know, just like those, but in like"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":559.6700000000001,"endTime":565.73,"body":"the pedagogy and learning how to talk to people like"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":565.73,"endTime":570.11,"body":"that really has built my leadership in"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":565.73,"endTime":570.11,"body":"communications skills. And I just have a lot to"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":570.11,"endTime":575.35,"body":"think this program for, like as a student. And it's"},{"speaker":"Katarya Johnson-Williams","startTime":570.11,"endTime":575.35,"body":"also got me interested in teaching actually. That is just like such a great thing to ask"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":1449.26,"endTime":1456.6999999999998,"body":"more questions and it helps you be a really active"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":1456.6999999999998,"endTime":1463.12,"body":"listener. So I thought that was that was"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":1456.6999999999998,"endTime":1463.12,"body":"entertaining. So in the pedagogy course, it's done"},{"speaker":"Katie Johnson","startTime":1463.12,"endTime":1470.8,"body":"slightly differently in different places.
