137: Choosing Your Color Palette (Series 3 of 4)
When it comes to color, it's important to remember that different hues can evoke different emotions in people. Think about what emotions you want to convey with your brand and choose colors accordingly. For example, if you want to convey a sense of trust and professionalism, you might choose shades of blue. On the other hand, if you want to convey energy and excitement, you might choose shades of red or orange. And don't forget about the colors in your logo, they also play a huge role in how people perceive your brand. So make sure to choose colors strategically to make the most impact.

Well, hey there. This is Danise. And this is the Salon Ownership Made Easy podcast for salon owners who are searching for simple solutions to their everyday challenges. I've owned several six and seven figure award winning salons in my 30 year career. With so many changes happening in our industry these days, it seems like salon owners need a shoulder a hug, and a big dose of reality. Think about it. We didn't learn how to be successful salon owners in beauty school. So why don't you let me share what has worked and what hasn't worked for me over the years, you do have what it takes to be amazingly successful. So let's do this. I'm excited. You're here. We've been talking about in this series about brand identity for the salon. First, we talked about how to even create your brand identity like what's your mission? What's your vision, your value system? What if your brand was a personality? What would you want it to say to your guests before they even came in the door, then we start talking about fonts. And the reason why it's so important to have different kinds of fonts, not too many, maybe three, but this week, fun stuff, we get to talk about the color palette and picking your color palette. Sometimes you don't even think about that. Sometimes you just go hey, I like this color. And that's the color I'm going to be using. Cool, you could do it that way. That's that's totally cool. But I want you to realize that color, just like hair color, color in our salon space color in our brand actually has an impact on how we're perceived. Yes, by choosing the correct colors, you can elevate your brand, or not. For a long time, my brand colors was just my two favorite colors. I had no idea why I just liked it. And it was just in my logo. But that that color didn't go into the salons. So I wasn't very consistent. It wasn't until my last salon that I actually did start thinking differently. And for a long time, we didn't have a color tell you the truth because we just started really, really quick. And so we just use black and white. And then that way, whatever we put with it, it would go. So black and white, very classic. And then we started adding in a shade of green kind of like plants because we were very, we recycled a lot we very environmentally conscious, things like that. So it ended up being like black, white, and gray kind of color. And green. Okay, all right. It was it was it was kind of hard to do anything with those colors, but we did it. And we did it pretty successfully. But I think if I would have thought about it beforehand, I could have saved myself a lot of pain and our branding materials would have been really cohesive. Let's, let's just talk about what different colors mean. So there's a plethora of colors, you know that. And it could be anything from pastel colors, which are really in right now that bohemian kind of softer peaches and, and things like that. Wonderful, lovely. And then there's also bold colors, you know, the vivid pinks, and the teal colors, things like that. I've seen that a lot of that too. So let's just talk about what different colors mean to the psyche, because they do. Alright, so let's start with red. Okay, red is the color of passion and excitement. And it's a perfect choice. If you're loud, useful and exciting. You'll see red in a lot of fast food restaurants, because they want to create excitement. And they want you in and out they want to move on because they're all about quantity, right. So you'll see a lot of red in some of the fast food restaurants. I mean, think of some of the other brands have red target, they wanted to move in and out. Target now is a target. And so when you think of a target is red, but let's move on. Orange is another high energy color. And it's great if you want to appear friendly and playful. Now it's used less commonly than red. So it actually make you stand out in a crowd. So if you want something with a lot of energy, and you're thinking about red, maybe think about orange and it could be an orange, red, yellow is the next one. And that's the color of sunshine. It's all about happiness, and I have seen yellow a lot lately too. And it's a great choice if you want to feel fun assessable and affordable. That's a big one, right? If you want your client to feel like they can afford to go into your salon, you might want to consider using yellow in your logo. Green greens are a very versatile color. It can be used in just about any brand. Usually when people see Green they think about either nature or they think about money. I mean, it's not a bad choice blue. It's the universally appealing color in the whole spectrum of the color blue. Everybody loves some shade of blue. Blue looks good on everybody. So if you want your brand to feel stable, trustworthy, and you want to appeal to a wide demographic, you want to use blue. It's also the color of trust. You'll see a lot of banks use blue. Now Purple, purple is one of my very favorite colors. Purple is the color of royalty. And so if you want to go for like a luxury feeling in your brand, you can use some shade of purple, pink, right or wrong, Pink's always been thought of for feminine. So if your targets women, you should probably have pink in your brand colors somewhere. But it's also great for brands, you know that just a soft color Soft luxury. And it can be universal. I mean, these days anything goes right, so I'm just telling you what the stats are saying Brown is perhaps the least used color in branding, except for like UPS, right? But it can actually work to your advantage because there's a lot of things that go with brown, brown and blue. You know, I've seen brown and yellow played off. But if you have a barbershops or you're really trying to appeal to men, you might want to consider using brown because that's that's the universal color for masculinity. Now Black, black is very modern, very sophisticated, very classic. It's like having your little black dress, it will never go out of style. And it is very, very effective. Specially in our industry. If you think about it, think of some of the logos that are out there like so we were talking about blue building trust Lowe's, American Express, Twitter, Oreo cookies. Wonder why they use blue in their logo. That's kind of funny. Let's talk about red eye. We are talked about target, Lay's potato chips, Ace Hardware, Pinterest, CNN, some of the yellow ones IKEA, Best Buy Hertz Rental Car. Kind of interesting to think why they chose the colors they did green Girl Scouts, Whole Foods, very healthy animal planet really kind of does tell a lot about the brand. Before you even know what the brand is about. Okay, hopefully, you've had a lot of fun with color, here's a couple of suggestions, there's a couple of places you can go online, I would, I would suggest going to Pinterest, look up color palettes, that's kind of a fun search to do, it can give you a start of how to create or at least the feeling and the vibe that you want to create with your brand. So go to Pinterest, go to I think it's called Color Palette, well go to this color palette.com or coolers.co. What that is, is a color palette generator, I'll put the link in the show notes because I might have that wrong. But what it is is a color palette generator, it is so cool my friends, you can put in any color. And it'll create a color palette of five different colors for you. Or you can put in a photo that you like. So maybe it's a photo of like a bird, or a photo of a sunset or a photo of the beach, maybe you have a beach theme kind of Salon, you put this photo in, it'll grab those five major colors out of that photo, and it generates your color palette. It's amazing. It's amazing. Or you can search for just the trendy colors, things like that, you can do that. Once you have your colors selected, right, I would still go in well not still, this is what you have to do. Once you have your colors in there. You need to make sure that you know what that color represents. Let me show you here. There's a there's a five or six digit number or letter representation of each color. And what that is used for is anytime that you put your color online or in a print material, you need to know what that code is. So for instance, for this color right here. It's like a teal color. The number is 318894. Okay, anytime I'm creating a website, I'm creating a logo I'm going to Canva Pro and putting that in that 31889 for that color is going to be consistently that same teal color throughout. Okay, that is so important. If you need more information on this because So I don't know if I'm making myself real clear on how, what this signifies I think it's called a hex code. Just just message me, I will try to make sure I put it in the show notes too. But yeah, just message me, I'll help you with that. We do have a whole course on how to create a color palette and we'll walk you through that and and step you through that. And if you're interested in that, let me know I would love to help you with that. Hopefully, this has helped with your brand identity. We've talked about brand identity, your values, your why all that good stuff, picking out your fonts, picking out your color palette, and next we're going to be talking about how to create that logo. That's gonna be a lot of fun. Till next time, stay awesome. Hey, there, thanks so much for listening to the salon ownership Made Easy podcast today. Would you do us a favor?
