154: Bathroom Cleanliness
Keeping the salon bathroom clean is important for several reasons:
1. Client Comfort: A clean bathroom ensures that clients feel comfortable and at ease during their visit to the salon. A dirty or unkempt bathroom can create a negative impression and make clients question the overall cleanliness and hygiene standards of the salon.
2. Health and Hygiene: Maintaining a clean bathroom is crucial for maintaining good health and hygiene practices. A clean bathroom helps prevent the spread of germs, bacteria, and illnesses among both clients and staff. Regular cleaning, disinfection, and proper waste disposal are essential to promote a safe and healthy environment.
3. Professionalism and Reputation: A clean bathroom reflects positively on the professionalism and reputation of the salon. It shows that the salon values cleanliness, attention to detail, and client satisfaction. A well-maintained bathroom contributes to a positive overall experience, which can lead to repeat business and positive word-of-mouth recommendations.
4. Staff Morale: A clean bathroom is not only important for clients but also for the well-being of the salon staff. Providing a clean and sanitary restroom area shows that the salon cares about the comfort and welfare of its employees. It creates a more pleasant working environment and helps boost staff morale.
5. Compliance with Regulations: Many jurisdictions have health and safety regulations that require businesses, including salons, to maintain clean and hygienic bathroom facilities. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in penalties, fines, or even closure of the salon.
6. Overall Aesthetics: A clean bathroom contributes to the overall aesthetics and ambiance of the salon. It enhances the overall impression of cleanliness, professionalism, and attention to detail throughout the entire salon space.
7. Use for promoting products: Hairspray, shine sprays…upcoming promotions in the salon…events, sales, community involvement.
In conclusion, a clean bathroom in a salon is essential for client comfort, health and hygiene, maintaining a professional reputation, boosting staff morale, complying with regulations, and creating an overall pleasant and inviting environment for everyone.

Hey there, welcome to the salon ownership Made Easy podcast. As a former salon owner, I know how tough it can be to deal with things like hiring new team members, managing your KPIs, and fixing everything that seems to break in the salon. It's enough to drive anyone crazy. But don't worry, I'm here to help you navigate the ups and downs of the industry. Let's face it, beauty school didn't prepare us for the real world of Salon ownership. But with the right techniques, systems and mindset, you can achieve amazing success. With over 30 years of experience and for successful salons under my belt, including two that hit over seven figures. I've learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn't. So buckle up and get ready for some practical tips and real talk. Let's do this. Today we're going to talk about something that most people don't even talk about, they don't even consider that is How clean is your bathroom in the salon. Hmm. Have you ever gone into any kind of business and went into their bathroom and it was filthy? You know what I'm talking about? I'm not talking about just those drive thru, like gas stations, when you're taking a road trip, I'm talking about any business like a restaurant. Maybe they're using their bathroom as a storage unit for their paper towels or their soy sauce? Or I don't know, but you know what I'm talking about, right? That you're going into a business and their bathroom is a mess. What does that make you think of the rest of their establishment? Have you thought of that? Does it make you question if their kitchen is clean? If they? How do they handle things? Right? So let's talk about why it's so important to consider what your bathroom situation is in your salon. It's not just an oversight, please don't handle it as that let's talk about some of those things. Okay, number one. First of all, the first thing that is most important is client comfort. Right a clean bathroom ensures that clients feel comfortable in ease during the visit to the salon period. A dirty or unkept bathroom can create a negative impression and make clients question just like what I was saying. The overall cleanliness of the whole salon. You don't want them to even question your cleanliness in the salon. You don't want them to question what your back room looks like, or your break room or under your styling station. You just don't want them to question that. So if you have a clean bathroom, it makes the whole experience better. So get in there. Take a look around is are there dust bunnies? Is the rim clean? Are there is there like soap buildup around the the faucet? Does it need updated? Does the faucet even need updated? That's really really an easy fix. You just go to Home Depot or Lowe's and you pick up a new new faucet handles things like that. Does the light switch work? Does the lights work or the light bulbs burn out? Simple, simple, easy things it's so easy to update the light bulbs, the light fixture, the mirror, you know you don't have to go with just the builder grade stuff that they give you when you rent out your space. So think about those. But do keep in mind though, you have to be in compliance for like handicapped access, like the sink needs to be able to there needs to be enough room if there's a wheelchair needs to have enough room that the wheelchair can get underneath. So you do need to consider things like that. And if you have any questions about that you can reach out to me or to your city they have codes and regulations. But you can get a nice bathroom vanity that still has the capabilities of getting a wheelchair in there. Anyway, so then, number two reason why it's important to keep your salon bathroom clean is the health and hygiene. So maintaining a clean bathroom is crucial for maintaining good health and hygiene practices come on. This is a given right. Regular cleaning, disinfection and proper waste disposal are essential to promote a safe and healthy environment. You know, if the trash needs to be taken out, take the trash out and I always think it's best to have a covered trashcan, maybe even one with like one of those foot pedals on it. Cover the trash can in the bathrooms. Nobody wants to be looking in that. Okay. I know this is just kind of a gross topic it is but it's so important and most of us don't think about it. So number three, a clean bathroom roof reflects positively on the professionalism and reputation of the salon. We used to always have this it gives you, you know, it shows that you have an attention to detail, we used to always get people coming out of our bathrooms going over to like your bathrooms, we used to do things like instead of paper towels, we just go the extra mile and we'd buy packs of white washcloths, and we'd roll them up cute, put them in a little basket, and we use those for people to dry their hands off. And then we would just toss those into the washer, you know, a load of white with a little bleach, it just raises the level from paper towels. And then you don't have to go to like Sam's Club or Costco to redo your paper towels all the time. And you can get those washcloths those white washcloths, pretty, they're affordable. Let me just say that. And it just shows that you're thinking about the details of their experience. And a well maintained bathroom. It just gives a positive overall experience to the guests. Like I was saying so. And people talk about that, believe it or not. Have you ever talked about that? Yeah, it's a nice restaurant, or it's a nice salon, but just go in the bathroom. So another reason for keeping your bathroom clean staff morale. It's not only important for clients, but it's for the well being of the staff. So it just shows that the salon cares about the comfort and welfare of its employees as well. And it just creates a more pleasant working environment and helps boost staff morale. I know it's a little things right. It also it's important because many jurisdictions have health and safety regulations that require businesses including salons, like I said, to maintain clean and hygienic bathroom facilities. And if you fail to comply with these regulations, it can result in penalties, fines, or even closing your salon. So you do have to have a clean bathroom Come on we we go to beauty school to learn how to clean our combs, or shears, or clippers, you know, be healthy, all those things right? You can you need to keep the bathroom clean as well. And however you do it, whether you hire somebody to take care of cleaning the bathrooms, or what we used to do is we had a schedule for our salon team to clean the bathroom so everybody had to pitch in. So I think it would rotate weekly, just depends on how much staff you have. But that will be one person like the assistants aren't doing it. So whatever works for you. So if you have like a cleaning schedule in the back, just rotate it and that way everybody takes turns cleaning the bathroom. A clean bathroom also contributes to the overall aesthetics and the ambiance of the salon. It enhances the overall impression of the cleanliness, we talked about that the professionalism, the entire salon space, it's actually can be used as part as part of your branding. Have you thought about that? Continue your brand, your brand colors your brand theme into your bathroom, it doesn't have to be just as bland white bathroom. If you have plants going on in your salon, put some plants in the bathroom. If you have wooden shelves, put some wooden shelves in there. And that leads me to promoting Promote your products in there promote your events or your sales events, or your community involvement. We used to always keep a can of hairspray or a couple different cans of hairspray with the description of what they were and how to use them. Because you know very well that your guest gets up out of their seat and they go to the bathroom to fluffed their hair. They're going to need some hairspray to go with that. It's kind of like if you give a pig a pancake, it's gonna need some syrup to go with it. Have you heard of that children's book? Okay, sorry. I liked that book. No, but no, put some hairspray on there, put some shine spray in there. Maybe even some root left or something that might pique their interest and they might come out and ask you about it. That's always good. But if you have a promotions coming up like a holiday sale, or if you are doing some kind of community involvement, it's wonderful to put a flyer on the wall in there maybe on the back of the door. Because they're in there anyway. They're going to read, I love going to my gym, and in their bathroom in the locker room. When you go into the stall. They always have an updated flyer on the back of the door. Hello, you're sitting there, right? And then it tells what's coming up the events, the community involvement, goals, and then they have silly little signage in there. You know, like if you have if you make a mess clean it up or I don't know, just funny little things. And then they have hand sanitizer, they have hand lotion. And that's even better if you sell hand lotion, put a sample of your hand lotion in there. That way they can use it, they can experience it in their own privacy. Right. So anyway, in conclusion, I know this is a weird topic, but I think it's an important topic and one that we don't really think about. But your bathroom is an extension of your brand. And it's, it's an extension of the whole experience in your salon. So don't overlook it. Don't overlook the importance of that. I think every single person who comes to your salon, yeah, probably 85% of them, they go to the bathroom. So, you know, do that. Here's another trick. We did two. In one of our salons, we had two bathrooms. And we made both of them unisex. So we I went on Etsy, and I got these cute little signs. They were little wooden signs, and they had a man and a woman stick figures, I think on them and we put them on, you know, outside the bathroom. And they were just cute. And it's just that way men or women could go in to eat either or. And yes, we had hairspray. Yes, we had shelves. Yes, we had our current promotions. Yes, we had plants. Yes, we had, if we did have one of the bathrooms was big enough to put a storage unit in there. But it was a nice storage unit. So don't just put shelves in there and then start shoving your toilet paper and your paper towels and extra soap and stuff on there. Make it enclosed, so it's hidden. It doesn't have to be locked up. Nobody's gonna steal your toilet paper. But it we can even put like a little box that has personal items in there. You know, sanitary napkins, tampons, you know, you know what I'm saying? discreetly. We also here's another idea, too. We also were involved with the Samaritan house. And they came to our salon and talked to us about domestic violence and how to actually see what the signs were for domestic violence. But we ended up putting these little cards in the bathroom that had a hotline on them. So if one of your guests is experiencing anything, any kind of abuse, they can actually pick up one of those cards and tuck it in their own pockets and they don't have to say it a thing. It just, that's just an idea. Anyway, a clean bathroom is a sign of a clean salon always is always will be. Period. I hope you got something out of this. If you did, please share it with your salon owner friends, your stylists, friends. Maybe you got a good laugh out of it. I don't know.
