155: Agreeing on the Salon Music
The right music in a salon is super important, trust me. It has a huge impact on the whole vibe and can make or break the experience. Here's why it's such a big deal:
· Setting the Mood: Music sets the tone, plain and simple. Whether you want a chill spa-like vibe or a lively and energetic atmosphere, the right tunes can create the perfect ambiance that matches your salon's style. It helps set the mood and vibe for everyone, clients and staff included.
· Enhancing Relaxation and Comfort: Salon visits are all about relaxation and pampering, right? Soothing, calming music can help clients chill out, destress, and feel cozy during their treatments. It creates a calming background that adds to the overall relaxing spa-like experience.
· Boosting Energy and Creativity: But hey, not every salon is all about Zen vibes. Some places thrive on energy and creativity. If you're a hair salon or a trendy spot, playing upbeat music can bring the place to life. It gets clients and staff pumped up, adds a lively atmosphere, and boosts the positive vibes.
· Client Engagement and Satisfaction: Good music can totally connect with clients. Playing familiar songs or catchy tunes can stir up positive emotions, spark conversations, and make clients feel more at ease. It sets the stage for an enjoyable time, and happy clients mean repeat business and word-of-mouth recommendations.
· Branding and Standing Out: Music is a secret weapon for branding. Picking tunes that match your salon's identity, target audience, and services can create a unique and memorable experience. It helps your salon stand out from the competition and makes clients remember your vibe long after they leave.
· Staff Motivation: Don't forget about the impact on your staff! Music can seriously boost their motivation and productivity. Playing tunes that they love and that match the energy they need can create a positive work environment. It lifts their spirits, encourages teamwork, and makes work more fun and productive.
So there you have it. The right music in the salon is a game-changer. It sets the mood, enhances relaxation or energy, keeps clients engaged and satisfied, reinforces your brand, and even fires up your staff. So go ahead and curate that killer playlist to make your salon an unforgettable experience for everyone involved!

Hey there, welcome to the salon ownership Made Easy podcast. As a former salon owner, I know how tough it can be to deal with things like hiring new team members, managing your KPIs, and fixing everything that seems to break in the salon. It's enough to drive anyone crazy. But don't worry, I'm here to help you navigate the ups and downs of the industry. Let's face it, beauty school didn't prepare us for the real world of Salon ownership. But with the right techniques, systems and mindset, you can achieve amazing success. With over 30 years of experience and for successful salons under my belt, including two that hit over seven figures. I've learned a thing or two about what works and what doesn't. So buckle up and get ready for some practical tips and real talk. Let's do this. What's one of the number one things in the salon with your staff that is argued about? I could probably guarantee it's the music that's played in the salon. Am I right? Who's with me here? We used to always argue about the music in the salon. When I first opened my salon ice it was before Spotify, it was before Pandora it was before you could easily get your hands on lists of musics or pre made or anything like that. And we had a friend of ours who was a DJ. And he gave us a hard drive that contained 1000s of songs. And my husband and I spent hours and many bottles of wine, going through these this music and coming up with so many songs that we put on a little thumb drive. I mean, I'm dating myself, right. But we went we wanted to curate a certain kind of mood, a certain kind of feeling in the salon. And I loved it. Because I love 70s music I love that happy. You know KC and the Sunshine Band. I'm really, really dating myself. But I remember making this this music and getting all this music and it was all kinds of stuff. It was current stuff, but it was a lot of like, stroll down memory lane. It wasn't like, you know, old, old old music. It was just fun, funky music that you might hear occasionally. And no, you would go Oh, I haven't heard this song forever. In fact, that's what people used to say. Oh my gosh, I haven't heard this song and they would love it. Love it. Now. We had probably not, I don't know 800 songs on the list. Hidden Yes, I can guarantee you. I think it went for like four days without repeating something like that. But if you're in the salon all the time as a staff member as a team player, you're gonna hear those songs over and over and over and it gets gets old. However, I want you to know this. The music is not for the team. The music is not for the stylist. The music is for the guest experience. Let me repeat that. The music in the salon is for the guest experience. It is part of the salon brand. It is part of the salon experience. It sets the mood or the tone. So if you have a spa like salon, you need to be playing spa like relaxing music. Whether you like it or not. If you have a funky fun, hip, you know salon, you need to pay plain funky, hip music, it goes with the experience of the salon, it goes with the brand in the worst thing you can do is have it all over the place. Okay, so let me give you an example of this. Okay, when we got Spotify or Pandora or whatever, sometimes, and I wasn't in the salon working all the time, but sometimes I would come in the salon, and it would be this like indie rock kind of stuff. And I'd be like, What the heck was somebody put on their list and they wanted to hear it? Or it would be, I don't know, New Age relaxing kind of, I don't know, sound computer generated. And it'd be like, What the heck, there's nothing wrong with that. I'm not saying that that there's anything wrong with either of those types of music, but it did not go in with our brand of our soul. line. Do you ever have those times where as a salon owner that the stylists are complaining about the music? Oh, if I hear this song one more time, or I never want to hear country or never want it, whatever, right? They're complaining. Now, if you have a guest that's complaining, that's a whole other story. I mean, like, you probably don't want music that has profanity in it in, you know, hardcore, you know, rapping or unless that your brand, I'm just saying, if that's the brand of your salon, then by all means, I've been in salons, like in San Diego, like Robert Cremeans. Salon, it's a fun salon. And it's got fun music, and it goes with his brand. Whatever your brand is, you've got to define that. Your vision, how do you want your guests to feel when they walk in your space? Do you want them to be relaxed, then you need to set the mood with the music. If you have a chilled spy like a spa, spa like vibes, sorry, then you weren't chills spa like music. Nothing wrong with that. You just want to set the mood and the vibe for everyone clients and staff included. Okay, so if you have a spa, yes, you can play different kinds of spa music. Yeah, it would get old if you had the same CD playing the eight same songs all the time, that would get old and hello for everybody. But there's all kinds of spa music. Or if you have lively and energetic atmosphere, there's all kinds of lively and energetic music, I would say mix it up a little bit. You can also change up the music for the time of day. So say, I remember this, we come into the salon, you're opening up the shop, and you turn on the music list. And just like oh my gosh, I haven't even had my first cup of coffee yet. And the music was just on this high energetic stuff. And it's just like, oh, not yet, not yet, right? Walking on Sunshine, you know, haven't even had my first cup of coffee. So you can change it up as the day goes. Because you might want, you might have a different crowd, you might have an older crowd in the morning. And you might have a younger college crowd at night, you can change it up that way too. In fact, you might want to like certain times of day, maybe you have certain lists for morning, afternoon and evening. But it's the same type of music, just different beats, does that make sense. And it's amazing these programs these days that you can do that. Make sure though that your music connects with your guests you might even survey them at throughout their visits, you want to play familiar and catchy songs. Like I said, that's I used to have so many people say oh my gosh, I have heard this song of forever, because it stirs up positive emotions. And it sparks conversation. And it just makes your clients feel like you get them. Right, it makes makes them feel more at ease. And it just sets the stage for an enjoyable time and your salon. And you know what they say happy clients mean repeat business. And they'll talk about you outside of your four walls. That's what you want. Just remember that your music is your secret weapon for your branding. So you got your business cards, you got your colors, you've got your music, is your identity. So just make sure you keep your target audience in mind, your services in mind, and your brand in mind when you're selecting your music. Don't just put on random stuff and hope it hope it works out. Think about it. And maybe have a huddle with your staff and say you guys want what kind of what kind of mood do we want in here? Because you know your culture, you know what it is? So, but don't not think about your music? I guess that's what I'm trying to say. Music is the icing on the cake for the experience of your client. With all that said, you still need to consider your staff because if they're hating life because they have to listen to this song one more time, you know, you can change it up. I had to do that. I know. I know. It's like, but if if it's not motivating your staff if they're like, I can't stand to hear this song one more time, actually some of our huddles, I would every once awhile say Okay, everybody write down one song they want off the playlist and everybody has that one song that they just do not want to hear again. And trust me. She'll get feedback. And they didn't have to shout it out. Wow, they didn't have to say anything. They just put it wrote it on piece of paper, tucked it in the hat. And I would go through and I'd take those songs off, you do listen, but then add some new songs because songs are always always changing. Ask for suggestions from your staff even ask them to put together a song list like on Spotify. It's amazing what your salon team can do and will do to help promote the salon. And if music is what they find more enjoyable because it makes their day go better. Then let them help with the process so they have the right music in the salon is a game changer. It sets the mood enhances relaxation or energy. It keeps the clients engaged and good time it reinforces your brand, and it even fires up your staff. So go ahead and curate that killer playlist to make your salon an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
