Physical Development - the Foundation of All Learning (Ep 28)
In this transformative episode, host Lili-Ann Kriegler welcomes Dr Rachel Jones, an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong, to explore why physical development has become the 'missing piece' in early childhood education.
Dr Jones reveals how movement directly connects to cognitive functions and self-regulation, with the same brain areas activated during cognitive tasks and movement. She explains that motor development is the first area to develop in utero, laying the groundwork for all subsequent brain development.
Key insights include:
- Two additional sensory systems beyond the famous five: vestibular (balance) and proprioception (body awareness)
- Why development progresses from core strength to fine motor skills—never the reverse
- Evidence showing why two-year-olds' hand bones aren't ready for writing
- Simple strategies like reading books twice and using masking tape for movement
Dr Jones introduces the MOVER scale, a comprehensive assessment tool for evaluating physical development environments, and discusses Australia's first risky play position statement, explaining why controlled risk builds essential life skills.
The conversation challenges conventional school readiness expectations, advocating for physical development as the foundation for all other learning. Dr Jones shares practical strategies educators can implement immediately to transform 'small moments into big moments' throughout the day.
This episode is essential for early childhood educators, parents questioning academic pressure on young children, and anyone interested in evidence-based child development approaches.
Dr Jones concludes with a powerful message: 'What educators do today will inform children in the future and for years to come.'
