High School Journal Writing Prompts
Speaker 1All right, so welcome back for another deep dive.
Speaker 2Always fun to dig into something new.
Speaker 1And this one I got to say is it's kind of unique.
Speaker 2Oh.
Speaker 1We're tackling 50 journal writing prompts.
Speaker 2Okay, interesting.
Speaker 1But here's the thing these are aimed at high schoolers.
Speaker 2High schoolers. Huh, Takes me back.
Speaker 1Right, the source is actually a PDF.
Speaker 2A PDF.
Speaker 1From a company. You guessed it they sell journals.
Speaker 2Ah, clever marketing Totally.
Speaker 1But hey, we're all about the prompts themselves, right, absolutely. So. They've got these prompts all neatly divided into five categories.
Speaker 2Five. Okay, I'm intrigued.
Speaker 1Personal growth, exploring emotions and relationships. Makes sense Creative exploration.
Speaker 2I like it.
Speaker 1Setting goals and planning for the future.
Speaker 2Essential for that age group.
Speaker 1And lastly, self-discovery and reflection.
Speaker 2Lots to unpack there.
Speaker 1Seriously so much to cover.
Speaker 2Well, let's jump in.
Speaker 1Right into it.
Speaker 2What strikes me right away just glancing at these categories yeah, they hit on those parts of high school that are both, you know, tough but also super exciting.
Speaker 1Absolutely.
Speaker 2It's not just about like grades and stuff.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2It's that whole figuring yourself out thing.
Speaker 1Amidst all the chaos, right.
Speaker 2Exactly so much change happening.
Speaker 1Okay, so let's dive into the first category here.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1Personal growth. They've got prompts like yeah, write about one habit you've developed that has helped you grow as a person.
Speaker 2Interesting.
Speaker 1Seems pretty straightforward.
Speaker 2It does.
Speaker 1But deceptively powerful, don't you think?
Speaker 2I think so.
Speaker 1I mean, high school is all about trying new things.
Speaker 2Right, some hit, some miss.
Speaker 1Exactly, but this prompt.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1It makes you think critically. Makes you think Like okay, which habits have actually made a difference?
Speaker 2Which ones moved the needle? For the better. Right, that's pure gold in terms of self-awareness.
Speaker 1For sure. And there's another one. Write about something you used to believe but have since changed your mind about.
Speaker 2Whoa.
Speaker 1Talk about growth.
Speaker 2Serious growth.
Speaker 1It's tough admitting you were wrong at any age.
Speaker 2Oh, tell me about it.
Speaker 1But especially as a teenager, right.
Speaker 2Totally. But this prompt, yeah, it kind of normalizes that you know Normalizes what. That changing your mind is part of learning.
Speaker 1Oh, I see.
Speaker 2Helps kids see how their thinkings evolve.
Speaker 1Right, like why they think differently now.
Speaker 2Exactly.
Speaker 1Man, I wish I had that kind of introspection back then.
Speaker 2It would save some trouble maybe.
Speaker 1Maybe a lot. All right, let's move on.
Speaker 2Let's do it.
Speaker 1To the next category, exploring emotions and relationships.
Speaker 2Ooh, that's a big one.
Speaker 1And we've got this one Write about a time when you felt misunderstood by someone close to you.
Speaker 2Ooh, that's a tough one. Right Hits close to home for everyone, I think.
Speaker 1Definitely Feeling misunderstood.
Speaker 2Yeah, part of life, right? Oh, absolutely.
Speaker 1But it's like magnified during those teenage years For sure. Here's where journaling can be so helpful.
Speaker 2Oh, how so.
Speaker 1It's not just venting right.
Speaker 2No.
Speaker 1It's about understanding why.
Speaker 2Unpacking those feelings.
Speaker 1Instead of just stewing in them. Right, you're encouraged to like.
Speaker 2Yeah, put them into words, articulate it all.
Speaker 1And maybe even see things from the other person's side.
Speaker 2Perspective taking, that's huge.
Speaker 1That's communication 101.
Speaker 2Seriously, something a lot of adults still struggle with. True, and you know what else?
Speaker 1What.
Speaker 2Journaling. It's not all serious business. You're right Can be fun too. Oh totally Like in this next category creative exploration One of my favorites. There's this prompt Write a short story about an imaginary world where everything is upside down.
Speaker 1Now, that's using your imagination.
Speaker 2It's more than that, though. What do you mean? It's about thinking outside the box. Okay, like if you can imagine a world totally different from ours. Yeah, makes you question everything you thought you knew question your assumptions right exactly, maybe even come up with new solutions problems anything really? It's like sneaky learning I like that disguise is a fun writing exercise, totally okay. And then there's the reality of high school what's that? You got to start thinking about oh yeah, that big scary future.
Speaker 1The category setting goals and planning for the future.
Speaker 2Okay, it's all about that, makes sense.
Speaker 1One prompt says think about where you see yourself in five years. Oh wow, daunting right.
Speaker 2A little bit.
Speaker 1But also kind of exciting.
Speaker 2Yeah, I see that.
Speaker 1Suddenly it's like college applications, career paths. I I see that Suddenly it's like what College applications? Yeah, career paths. I'm not nine yards, it can be overwhelming. It can but putting it down in a journal. It makes it less scary.
Speaker 2Less abstract.
Speaker 1Instead of just vague anxieties, you're forced to articulate to say it out loud what you actually want.
Speaker 2That's huge, seriously.
Speaker 1It's like the first step to making it happen.
Speaker 2Absolutely.
Speaker 1And imagine this what, five years down the line, yeah. You look back at what you wrote. Oh wow, see how your goals have changed.
Speaker 2That's a trick it would be fascinating. It would.
Speaker 1All right. Last category, but certainly not least, hit me with it Self-discovery and reflection deep stuff. This one really got me oh which one right about a moment when you felt truly yourself whoa deep right, that is deep authenticity. It's a big concept like it is, especially for teenagers. They're still figuring out who they are right, still figuring it all out this prompt though yeah it encourages them to find those moments there's moments when when they feel genuine.
Speaker 2Genuine self-expression that's powerful.
Speaker 1So like, when do you feel joy? Who are you when no one's watching?
Speaker 2That kind of thing.
Speaker 1Exactly. It's about knowing yourself.
Speaker 2Knowing your values, passions.
Speaker 1Even your quirks.
Speaker 2All of it.
Speaker 1And that's invaluable.
Speaker 2Invaluable when. Not just in high school, but for life. I agree with that.
Speaker 1So we've got prompts that encourage self-awareness, communication skills, goal setting, even getting creative.
Speaker 2Pretty impressive for a PDF.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2I think what's most interesting to me. It's meant for high schoolers, sure, but these prompts, they've got something for everyone.
Speaker 1Oh, I totally agree.
Speaker 2That's the thing about introspection.
Speaker 1What about it?
Speaker 2It's a lifelong journey.
Speaker 1It really is, and you know what makes me wonder. What's that?
Speaker 2Out of all these categories, which one do you think is most valuable for a teenager?
Speaker 1Ooh, good question.
Speaker 2And why that's tough. They all kind of build on each other, I know right. But if I had to pick just one, okay, I'd go with that. Exploring emotions and relationships category.
Speaker 1Oh interesting, why that one?
Speaker 2Well, think about it, high school is like a pressure cooker of social stuff.
Speaker 1That's a good way to put it.
Speaker 2Friendships first. Loves so much drama, family stuff too.
Speaker 1And you're trying to figure out who you are on top of all that Exactly, that's a recipe for some serious emotional turmoil.
Speaker 2You're telling me most teenagers they don't have the tools to handle that.
Speaker 1No, not at all, and that's where journaling can be like a lifesaver.
Speaker 2Oh yeah.
Speaker 1It's a safe space to just let it all out. Process, everything.
Speaker 2Without judgment.
Speaker 1Exactly, it's like having a trusted friend.
Speaker 2But it's you know.
Speaker 1You get to be totally honest.
Speaker 2Raw.
Speaker 1And by writing it down.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1You start to understand it better.
Speaker 2Oh, for sure.
Speaker 1That self-awareness that's key to building healthy relationships.
Speaker 2Oh, absolutely.
Speaker 1Like if you can explain.
Speaker 2What.
Speaker 1Why a friend's behavior makes you feel bad.
Speaker 2Okay, yeah.
Speaker 1You're better equipped to actually deal with it.
Speaker 2To communicate.
Speaker 1Exactly. Journaling isn't magic, no, it's not a sure-all, but it gives you the tools what kind of tools? To approach those tricky situations with more clarity.
Speaker 2Less emotion, more thought.
Speaker 1And confidence.
Speaker 2And it helps. You see patterns, oh, patterns, yeah, in your own reactions. That's interesting. It is right Like, why do I always feel this way when this happens?
Speaker 1Makes you think.
Speaker 2And that kind of self-knowledge.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Super empowering.
Speaker 1Okay, I'm with you on the emotional intelligence part.
Speaker 2Good.
Speaker 1But there's so much more here.
Speaker 2Oh, I know.
Speaker 1Like prompts that make you think bigger.
Speaker 2Bigger how?
Speaker 1Beyond just your own little world, like those prompts about feeling proud of yourself.
Speaker 2Oh, okay.
Speaker 1Or forgiving someone.
Speaker 2Mm-hmm.
Speaker 1They tap into something deeper, don't they? Definitely Like your place in the bigger picture.
Speaker 2Like your values.
Speaker 1Exactly, and your actions and how they affect others.
Speaker 2That's pretty profound for a high schooler.
Speaker 1You'd be surprised what they're capable of thinking about.
Speaker 2True, and there's one about imagining your dream job.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, and there's one about imagining your dream job. Oh yeah, that one.
Speaker 2Super relevant why they're about to become adults.
Speaker 1Right, it's like planting seeds for their future.
Speaker 2I like that analogy.
Speaker 1It's not just daydreaming.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1It's about making connections.
Speaker 2Connections between.
Speaker 1Passions and careers.
Speaker 2Give me an example.
Speaker 1Okay, maybe they love art, mm-hmm, and realize, hey, graphic design is a job. Well, they love animals and boom vet school.
Speaker 2It's about opening up possibilities.
Speaker 1So many possibilities.
Speaker 2Speaking of possibilities.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2There's this one prompt.
Speaker 1Okay, which one?
Speaker 2Right about a time you had to adapt to a new situation.
Speaker 1Ooh, that's a good one. High school is full of that New schools, new classes, new friends, always changing. But thinking back on those times, yeah. It can show you your own strength.
Speaker 2Strengths you didn't even know you had.
Speaker 1Hidden resilience.
Speaker 2That's what it's all about, right, learning to roll with the punches.
Speaker 1And come out stronger.
Speaker 2Exactly. That's a skill you need, no matter what you do in life.
Speaker 1So true. You know, as we're talking, I'm struck by how these prompts go beyond just you.
Speaker 2Beyond the individual.
Speaker 1Yeah, like they make you think about your legacy your impact on the world.
Speaker 2That's big.
Speaker 1It is right. It's like that prompt. Which one, what mark do you want to leave on the world?
Speaker 2That's a tough one.
Speaker 1Seriously, it makes you think.
Speaker 2It does, but it's so important to consider.
Speaker 1Why.
Speaker 2It pushes young people to think bigger.
Speaker 1Than themselves.
Speaker 2Exactly to see a future they want to be a part of.
Speaker 1It's about finding your purpose.
Speaker 2However big or small.
Speaker 1And maybe that purpose changes.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, for sure.
Speaker 1Which is totally fine.
Speaker 2The key is to be open to that change, to keep questioning and reflecting.
Speaker 1And these prompts give you a way to do that.
Speaker 2A framework.
Speaker 1I'm realizing something that's a this PDF. It might be for high schoolers, yeah, but honestly, these prompts are universal.
