Episode 12. A Cowardly Lion. Alice was reluctant to take on the job as director of the Adult Education Center in the wake of the political storm that blew the founder, Father Timothy Gibbons, out of Louisiana. There were plenty of reasons to justify her hesitation. To take the job she would have to quit her stable teaching position at the New Orleans Public School; she was the sole support for six of her seven children and generally averse to risk; she had no administrative experience; and she knew there was widespread antipathy to the school’s mission. As Alice considered all the people in her life to whom she already owed her successful career,
