Pleasure for the sake of pleasure? What a unique concept! The Kama Sutra has very strong views about it, and so do I. And while we are at it, let's discuss why you need to take shame and embarrassment out of the equation. India had it figured out thousands of years ago. It is time you did too.

The Bawa Sutra: Pleasure for Pleasure’s Sake
Welcome to the 3rd Friday mini-episode of the Dr. Sex Fairy Podcast that discusses the Bawa Sutra, which is my modern and scientific take on the ancient text the Kama Sutra. I am Dr. Kanwal Bawa, America’s favorite sex doctor and I am here to transform your life. Every Friday I discuss one topic out of the Kama Sutra. On my Tuesday episodes, which are longer, I discussed topics such as erectile dysfunction, penis enlargement, vaginal rejuvenation, orgasms, and so on from a more holistic point of view.
Today I would like to discuss the concept of pleasure. The Kama Sutra states that although procreation is connected to ethics and material goods, erotic desire is an instinctive impulse, and is not tied to the pursuit of an aim. What this means is that pleasure is not tied to having to perform a duty for a spouse, or even producing babies. There are many religions that consider sex a means to an end, and that end is procreation and the continuation of lineage.
What the Kama Sutra is saying is that pleasure is great for pleasure’s sake alone. Pleasure stands independent of other goals. I take from it the concept that it is OK to find pleasure whether it is with a partner, or even solo sex or masturbation. A common theme throughout the Kama Sutra is that everyone deserves pleasure. The thought that a woman's pleasure is pivotal is a radical concept in many cultures even today. Female genital mutilation or Clitoridectomy, is the surgical removal of the clitoris, and it is being performed in many parts of the world as I speak. You see, the clitoris is the seat of the female orgasm, and by cutting it off, you take away most of a woman’s ability to experience pleasure and enjoy sex.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia where female genital mutilation is practiced. This is even performed in infants. How barbaric are these people?! In these cultures girls usually undergo this mutilation no later than age 15. This is a human rights crisis.
It is important to note that not only does this take away a woman's ability to feel pleasure, it comes with serious complications such as bleeding, urinary problems, infection, and newborn deaths. It is ironic that the Kama Sutra, written thousands of years ago in ancient India, considered women on an equal footing while many cultures today do not.
We are also made to feel guilty about seeking or experiencing pleasure today in many parts of the world, including the so-called first world. Why the shame? Why is sexual pleasure something to be embarrassed about? Just look at how few people seek help for their sexual problems. They are so ashamed to come forward. In fact, this is the main reason why I chose to start the Dr. Sex Fairy Podcast. I then decided that we also need a different but equally important conversation about the ancient versus the modern view of sexuality, and started the Bawa Sutra Friday mini episodes. So make sure you listen every week as we continue on this journey of sex positivity, pleasure and better sexual function. Until next time.
