Converse is facing immense backlash over a controversial ad campaign that has horrified and angered many people in the Black community.

When Converse was initially contacted by The Washington Post, the company reportedly had no comment. But as the controversy spread online and the backlash intensified, Converse finally responded with an apology.

But an apology is not enough.

The same way we rejected Target’s apology, we are rejecting Converse’s apology. We are demanding accountability and transparency about how this campaign was created and approved in the first place.

Who was involved in developing this campaign? Who was the photographer? Who approved the final images? Who inside Converse signed off on it? A company the size of Converse has multiple levels of review, approval and legal oversight, so the public deserves to know how something this controversial made it all the way to publication.

And where is Nike?

Nike owns Converse, yet questions remain about why the parent company has not publicly addressed the controversy.

This also raises a much bigger conversation about what appears to be an increasingly common cycle. A controversial campaign or product generates attention and support from parts of the MAGA movement and the political right, backlash follows, the company issues an apology or statement, and within days everyone moves on to the next controversy.

We’ve already watched major cultural battles erupt around American Eagle’s Sydney Sweeney campaign and Target’s Halloween controversy. Now Converse is at the center of another firestorm.

In today’s video, we’re breaking down Converse’s apology, why I believe an apology alone isn’t enough, what accountability should look like, why Nike’s response matters, and why these controversies deserve more scrutiny than a corporate statement followed by everyone moving on.
