The Women Who Defied Pharaoh and Lived to Be Named

Pharaoh held all the power in Egypt, and he used it to issue a monstrous command: every Hebrew baby boy must die at birth. He handed the killing to two midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, expecting obedience. They refused. These women feared God more than they feared the most powerful man alive, and that single decision changed history. They protected life, risked execution, and even stood before Pharaoh and held their ground. Their quiet courage rippled across generations, because Moses, the future deliverer of Israel, survived in a world where women like these dared to say no. Here we see civil disobedience done right: when man's law demands what God forbids, God's law wins. Notice who Scripture remembers. Pharaoh's assistants are forgotten, nameless footnotes, but God wrote Shiphrah and Puah into His Word forever and built households for them. Their faithfulness happened behind closed doors, where no crowd watched and no applause followed, yet God saw every bold act. Their story strips away our excuses. So sit with the question that refuses to let go: What would you refuse to do if everyone around you said, "Just follow orders"?
