Supernatural Season 1, Episode 6, Skin recap 👕 It's a shapeshifter episode on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, and LA opens with a begrudging admission: she's somewhat enjoying the show (progress!). And with an episode title like Skin, Berly had high expectations that did NOT go the way she hoped.

The episode opens with a crime scene shocker: Dean has a bloody woman tied up, and the SWAT team busts in. But wait, it's one-week-earlier time! Sam gets an email from his college friend Becky about her brother Zach being arrested for murder, even though he was with her all night. Dean's skeptical (this isn't their gig), but they head to St. Louis anyway, peeling out past a Drive Safe America sign (Berly died laughing).

Things get weird when the boys realize a shapeshifter is stealing people's identities and their clothes. They find disgusting, jellified skin sheds in the sewers (NOT the skin shots Berly wanted), and a victim we nicknamed Cheekbones has a doppelganger problem. Then the shapeshifter becomes Dean, and evil Dean ties up Sam, giving us what the hosts declare a VERY attractive tied-up Sam moment.

Episode Highlights:

  • Berly's disappointment that skin meant gross jelly sheds, not shirtless Winchester boys
  • Calling the victim Cheekbones for the entire episode
  • The ONE shirtless Dean scene, immediately ruined by shapeshifting gore (teeth falling out, fingernails popping off)
  • Sam looking *real hot* tied up with rope (the hosts have no shame)
  • Dean promoting himself from cop to detective mid-investigation
  • Evil Dean downloading Dean's memories, Star Trek Vulcan mind meld style

In the lore segment, we dig into shapeshifter legends from Greek mythology (Zeus was a swan, a bull, AND an ant) to Egyptian gods, shamans, centaurs, and one of the oldest shapeshifter images ever found, the Sorcerer painting in the Cave of the Trois-Frères. Plus, we learn that Loki once turned into a mare and gave birth to Sleipnir, an eight-legged horse. As one does.

"I want to find that handsome devil and kick the holy crap out of him." – Dean Winchester, on his evil twin
