Supernatural Season 3, Episode 16, No Rest for the Wicked recap 🍨 It's the season three finale: Dean's time is up, the hellhounds are coming, and Sam, Dean, Bobby, and Ruby make one last stand against Lilith on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Grab your tissues. And a knife.
With hours left on Dean's deal, the hellhounds are closing in, and Dean is starting to hallucinate. Sam wants to summon Ruby for her demon-killing knife, but Dean doesn't trust her anymore. Bobby tracks Lilith to a small town where she's possessing a little girl and terrorizing a family, and the boys try to ditch Bobby to keep him safe. Bobby is having NONE of it.
Episode Highlights:
- Dean and Sam belting Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive in the Impala
- The hellhound POV chase through the forest (so chaotic, so good)
- Kim Manners' direction (we could tell it was him from the first scene)
- Ruby furious at being trapped and shouting at the boys
- Lilith spinning Grandpa's head, a callback to Malleus Maleficarum
- Dean seeing demons' true faces
- Katie Cassidy's best scene of the season (even Berly was impressed)
- The brothers' tearful goodbye
- A cliffhanger that had us yelling at the screen
In the lore segment, we dig into hellhounds and Black Shuck, the giant black dog of East Anglian folklore said to have attacked churches in Bungay and Blythburgh in 1577 (the claw marks are supposedly still there), the massive dog skeleton unearthed at Leiston Abbey, and hellhounds across cultures, from Cerberus and Anubis to the Grim in Harry Potter, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Omen, and Cujo.

Welcome to Denim Wrapped Nightmares, a supernatural rewatch podcast, where we explore the TV series episode by episode.
SPEAKER_01Over drinks, we'll discuss the lore, the gore, and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures. Hello, LA. Hello, Larry. On our last episode, which was titled Time Is on My Side? I think so. Yeah, sounds right. Uh, time is running out for Dean. We learn he has three weeks left from our good buddy Rufus, who is buddies of Bobby. It was in Erie, Pennsylvania. They investigate, the boys investigate a possible zombie case, but they discover that it's actually Doc Benton, a real life doctor who in 1816 abandoned his medical practice to follow his obsession with finding the key to alert to eternal life by drugging people and stealing their vital organs. And Bobby's friend Rufus actually knows where Bella is hiding. Dean heads out to confront her, realizes that she actually herself has made a deal with a demon. They kind of battle it out for the last time, and he leaves her in a desperate and possibly fatal position. We really don't know what happened. I mean, we assume the Hellhounds came for her because her ten years were up.
SPEAKER_00But they didn't show it. Right. So who knows? Yeah. She could be out there running and kicking. She could have figured something out. I hope so. Well, today's episode is titled No Rest for the Wicked. It's the 16th episode of season three. And it's the season finale. This is it. It premiered on May 15th, 2008. Before the episode kicks off, when they do their little recap at the beginning, the then and now thing. It was a montage and it was the song Carry On Wayward Sun, and we both went, woo! Like, oh, this is meaningful. This is really kicking off the season finale here. I think this is the first time the season finale started with Carry Off Wayward Sun. I can't remember. Oh, okay. I don't remember that happening for season two, but maybe it did. Yeah, I don't know. Who knows? It starts off with this forest, and Dean is running through the forest in the camera work. LA really liked that. Yes. Chasing Dean.
SPEAKER_01Definitely wasn't steady cam. Like that, either it was like the cameraman running with him or GoPro style with like on him, I think. Maybe even both. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00They did different angles too. Like sometimes it was down low near his feet, and sometimes it was up high closer to his face. Just adding to this chaotic feel of trying to get away. We can hear the hellhounds growling and barking, and they're chasing Dean through this forest, and he's like, no, trying to get away. But he wakes up. Turns out he had fallen asleep while he was researching hellhounds. Imagine that. Who would have known? That would have given him nightmares. They are, I think they're at Bobby's. Yeah, I think so. They were at Bobby's, I think he's researching by candlelight. I thought that was interesting. So maybe they're somewhere else and in some other abandoned home like they've been doing throughout the season. They're really fond of those. Who knows? They didn't really show us a whole lot of scenery, so I'm not sure where they were.
SPEAKER_01I mean, honestly, Bobby's house doesn't look like it's fully running anymore.
SPEAKER_00That shit hasn't been renovated like recently or anything. But the candlelight is what made me think maybe. Yeah, maybe they were somewhere else. Sam comes in and he's checking in on Dean, letting him know that Bobby has found a way to find Lilith's location, because of course he did. While they're talking, we see that Dean is hallucinating. We learned back in Crossroad Blues that when a hellhound is coming for you, you start hallucinating. Like the face, Sam's face is getting all warped and everything. Yeah, so I guess it's the demons. You start seeing the demons around you when the hellhounds are coming.
SPEAKER_01Is that it?
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, we find that out later in the episode, but Sam wasn't possessed. It was just his face. Remember?
unknownOh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And it was the same thing as that woman, the wife, being like, I love you, honey, back in Crossroad Blues, and her face went, Yep, yep, yep. Okay. Yeah. So it's just hallucinations. And Bobby calls him on this later in the episode. Dean's trying to play it cool, saying, like, oh yeah, we should go to Tijuana, check out a donkey show, you know, fuck this. And at some point we find out Dean has 30 hours left. And it's nighttime, so Bobby has some fancy. What was the thing that you would use in geometry class to like draw a perfect circle? A protractor? Yeah. Yeah. He had a fancy protractor that stands upright over a map. And he said some spell in Latin and it started swinging around. Bobby said that with his little spell, he would know it down to the street name. So they know exactly where Lilith is. But Dean starts pushing back against Bobby and Sam, saying, okay, who cares if we know where she is? We literally have no way to kill her. Why are we going to go after her? What are we going to do when we get there? You know, I'm down to do something, but I don't want to do something stupid that's just going to get everybody killed with me. Sam proposes that they summon Ruby because she has that fancy knife that kills demons. She might have some more information. And Dean says, no, she's a fucking liar. You know, Ruby knew Lilith, knew about Lilith, knew that Lilith wanted to kill you. Surely she knew that Lilith is who holds the contract on my soul. And she didn't say shit. I don't trust her anymore. So all that work Ruby did in Melly's Malificarum to get Dean to trust her, it's undone now. Yeah. Because Bella told him Lilith owns your contract. Bobby tries to cut in and say that Sam's right, but Dean says, no, it's not happening. Sam ignores Dean and summons Ruby anyway. Ruby is telling Sam that like she wants him to kill Lilith and that with his psychic powers they're just dormant right now, but he'll be able to do it. That basically Sam is a walking bomb and that she can help him get ready to kill Lilith. So I feel like I was kind of right that Ruby's like using them. She wants them to kill demons she doesn't like or whatever for some reason.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I was thinking maybe Lilith was in her coven with her, but based off of the lore, Lilith is older than that. She wouldn't be a witch in some coven. So I don't know what the connection is there, why why Ruby doesn't like Lilith. But Ruby's saying she wants them to kill Lilith. I also thought it was interesting that Lilith or that Ruby knew Lilith was like on vacation somewhere. How'd she know that?
SPEAKER_01Right. Also, what a vacation.
SPEAKER_00It was a weird vacation. Yeah. Maybe that's for a demon, especially. Yeah. That's what you're gonna do. Like you can go anywhere, you can do anything, and this is what you're gonna do. It seemed a little weird. Yeah. Oh well. So Ruby knows where Lilith is as well, and knows that Lilith is like just on vacation, that her she's, you know, she'll be caught off guard, she's just chilling out, relaxing, and she wants to coach Sam and get him ready to go kill Lilith. But Sam says, you know, just give me the fucking knife. We don't have time for this bullshit. Luckily, Dean totally suspected that Sam was gonna do this anyway. So he had painted a devil's trap on the ceiling and taunted Ruby into a fight, got her in the devil's trap, got the knife away from her, and told Sam, you know, I knew you were gonna fucking do this anyway. Thank God I'm here. It was pretty smooth.
SPEAKER_01It was. He did a good job. And she was pissed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she was not happy.
SPEAKER_01And I liked that he did it on the ceiling rather than the floor, trapping her, because that was genius.
SPEAKER_00Well, they've done that trick before.
SPEAKER_01I know, but like especially in this situation, so that Sam didn't really notice it. Even though he's tall as hell, he probably would have seen it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it was a nice callback because they haven't done it in a while. Right. It's been a while since we've seen a devil's trap on the ceiling, so it was it was nice. And Ruby was furious. She was like, Are you gonna fucking leak me here? And they were just like, Yeah, see you later, bitch. So they've got Ruby's knife, and Dean's like, This is what you wanted, right? We've got the knife, let's go. Sam does kind of push back and try to get Dean to listen to Ruby because of the whole you're a psychic bomb thing, and you know, maybe I can help. Maybe I'll be able to give us some sort of advantage. But again, Dean is like, no, no, we've got the knife, let's go. They try to leave and Bobby catches them. In fact, Bobby had disabled the car. Now this was weird. They're in the Ampala and Dean's trying to start the engine. Bobby comes up to the window, knocks on it, and is like, oh, are you looking for this? And he holds something. Now, I don't know anything about car parts, so I'm not sure what this thing was. But what it looked like was a piece of like a smoke detector or something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I agree. I don't know much about cars either, but it was like some weird plastic looking thing. And I don't know of many plastic things I've seen in an engine.
SPEAKER_00So we're curious. If anybody knows what this part was that Bobby had in his hand, let us know. Like DM us on Instagram or Twitter or something. I'm I'm honestly interested to know what the fuck that was supposed to be because it did not look like anything from a car to me. Anyway, Bobby is like, you're not fucking going without me. We're family, we're gonna go fight together. In the meantime, we see that Lilith has taken over the body of a different little girl. So it's not the same body of the little girl from Jessin Bello. It's a blonde girl. And this little girl actress, she killed it.
SPEAKER_01She did. She was cute and she did well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. When she was supposed to be scary, intimidating, menacing, nailed it. When she was supposed to be happy, go lucky, I'm a little kid, she nailed it. The little girl did good. Yeah. I do think it's weird that this demon keeps taking the bodies of children, though.
SPEAKER_01Again, like, yeah, that's why I was like, This is your vacation. Like, you're gonna go be a kid and terrorize this family? I guess that's what they get off on. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I guess so. Because she was doing things like it was her birthday every day. So the mom's having to make a birthday cake for her. Huge cake. Every day. They're doing a birthday party every day. The grandpa tries to get help from a neighbor and she figures it out and breaks his neck, spins his neck. This is the third time we've seen somebody's head get spun around. Yeah. By her too, right? Each time. No, no, the in Sin City, it was oh god, what was his name? Rit Richie? Richie, the succubus, spun his head. Oh, okay. And then in Malleus Malificarum, the demon, the good dick demon, you got that good dick demon. She spun one of the witches' heads. And now we have Lilith spinning this grandpa's head. And just making the mom read a story to her over and over and over again. I mean, this family is being tortured. And yeah, I guess that's what demons do for fun. I mean, who knew?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'd rather be on a beach.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh, she killed the family pet and apparently killed the babysitter. Little freckles? Yeah. Sam and Dean are heading to this town in Indiana to go confront Vilith. When they're driving there, Sam tries to have a serious talk. You know, kind of say goodbye to his brother just in case. Dean's like, no, we're not fucking doing this. And he puts on Bon Jovi, wanted dead or alive. They just kind of jam out for a little bit, but we do see that Dean kind of goes serious toward the end. You know, he he knows what's coming.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it took a minute for Sam to get into it, but he he got into it with him. It was like kind of back and forth.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, once Sam got into it, Dean got serious. So yeah, they kind of traded roles there. They get pulled over by a cop on their way there. And whenever the cop comes up to the driver's side window and is talking with Dean, getting license registration, yada yada yada, Dean realizes it's a demon because apparently he can now see demons' true faces. So he pushes open the door and has Ruby's knife and kills the fucking cop. Bobby is behind them and helps them hide the cop car and get rid of the body. He's the one who kind of says, Well, you're about to go to hell. So it makes sense that the veil between you and demons is going to get thinner and thinner and that you're going to be able to see them. I think the way he put it whenever they asked him to just say it in English, I think he said, you know, you're about to be hell's bitch. So it makes sense that you can see the other bitches of hell. You know, it was real classy.
unknownI liked it.
SPEAKER_00They make it to the town and they realize that there are other demons stationed all over the place. There's like a mailman, a neighbor, there's just demons everywhere. And Dean notices that the little girl is Lilith because he can see her true face and she looks different from everybody else. They're slowly taking out demons, you know, kind of clearing the way, so to speak. When Ruby shows up and Dean is disgusted by her real face up close. He's like, Oh my god, you're fucking ugly. I've never noticed it before. And she is pissed. She's like, I want my knife back. And Sam says, No, like help us. And she says, It's too late. Like, I needed time to help you, and now it's too late. We're here. Y'all are fucked. In the meantime, Bobby has gotten into the irrigation system and is blessing the water in the sprinklers. Pull an old John Winchester trick from back in season one, I think, where he's got a rosary and a cross, and he sang Latin, he drops it in there. So they turned on the sprinklers to the house that Lilith is in, therefore creating like a barricade. So all these demons aren't going to be able to come in and gang up on them. Well done.
SPEAKER_01Well done, guys.
SPEAKER_00Good job, Bobby. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because it shows us a shot outside, and they're literally all just standing there waiting for the sprinklers to go off.
SPEAKER_00I liked it. So Sam picks the lock, Dean and Ruby are with Sam. All three of them go into the house. They spot the babysitter like laying in the entryway with giant fucking flies all over her.
SPEAKER_01She's hard to miss. She's like right in the walkway, bleeding, and then just flies attached to her face. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, not at all. They showed her uh earlier in the episode as well. And it's still those giant flies, like right there, or whatever. They're going through the house, they run into the dad first. He's downstairs by himself. And Dean tells him, You need to go in the basement, put a line of salt behind you at the door, and stay there until we tell you it's okay to come out. And the husband at first is like, No, not without my wife. And they're like, Yes, without your wife. And he starts saying no and kind of getting a little louder. So then knock his ass out.
SPEAKER_01Which, good man, good man wanting his wife to be with him, you know, save her too, but you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Dean throws the husband over his shoulder and carries him down to the basement and salts the door.
SPEAKER_01Also, he throws him over his shoulder like it's a child. Yeah. I was like, it's nothing. And he's a grown man the size of him. I don't think he was as tall as Dean. Well, well, yeah. But either way, he's a grown man.
SPEAKER_00He can slightly smaller than Dean. If he can throw, throw him over his shoulder, imagine what he could do with you. Mm-hmm. Sit with that for a moment. Dean takes the husband down to the basement. And whenever this was happening, you know, Sam and Ruby are starting to head upstairs. And I said to LA then, wouldn't it make more sense for Sam to take the dad down to the basement? Because Dean can see Lilith's face. So he'll be able to see that she's still in the little girl's body. You know, what if she's moved?
SPEAKER_01Right. And I didn't think about that until he was like inching toward the bed, but you were totally right.
SPEAKER_00So Ruby goes in one room. I don't know why they split up. Ruby goes in a completely different room for some reason. I I still don't understand why that happened. And Sam goes into the little girl's bedroom because that's where the husband said they were. The wife is still laying there, and the little girl is asleep on top of her, and Sam inches around the bed, and the wife is just going, do it, do it, do it, like fucking kill her. Terrified. Yes. She is so scared. The little girl starts to wake up, and Dean shows up, thankfully, at just the right moment, is like, stop. That's not her. Like, she's not in here. They send all of the family into the basement with the husband, salt the door, stay there, don't come out. Yet again, Sam is trying to get Ruby to tell him what he needs to do to help. And Ruby is still telling him it's too late, which maybe I got those things mixed up. Maybe that didn't happen earlier. But right now it's definitely happening. That she's like, it's too fucking late. Like, I can't help you. It's too late. Dean stops him and tells him, like, listen, this is it. You know, I'm it, I'm, I'm gonna go to hell. You're going to let me. It's this really tearful goodbye. Jared Padelecki's eyes getting all teary again. It was so sad. Sam asks him, you know, what am I supposed to do? And Dean tells him, keep fighting, take care of my wheels, remember what dad taught you, and remember what I taught you. The clock strikes midnight while they're sitting there kind of waiting for the hellhounds to show up. Like we can hear them howling and growling and whatnot. All of them are in this office. They've put goofer dust at the door, goofer dust at the window, which we found out about goofer dust again back in Crossroad Blues season two, to try and keep the hellhounds out. Ruby all of a sudden starts asking for the knife. She wants the knife back. Give me the knife, give me the knife. And then Dean says, wait, that's not Ruby.
SPEAKER_01Right, which I thought it was weird, like all of a sudden she's like, give it to me, give it to me.
SPEAKER_00She hasn't been insisting on having the knife this entire time. You're not the one who the hellhounds are going to come after. So why do you suddenly want to have the knife so bad? I didn't connect it until you were kind of going, wait, wait, like you were saying that whenever she started insisting on give me the knife, give me the knife. I just don't understand why it took Dean so long to see that it was Lilith. Right, that doesn't make sense when he saw her face so clearly before.
SPEAKER_01Maybe it was he was just distracted. Worried about the hellhounds or something. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Who knows? That's what the writers decided. Exactly. So Ruby, or not Ruby, Lilith in the old body Ruby was possessing, like pushes Dean and he's pinned up against this desk, and then she pushes Sam and he's pinned up against the wall, and her eyes go white, so we see that it is in fact Lilith. And I have to say, I don't know who this actress is. I I should have looked this up. But this scene is my favorite performance from this actress so far this season.
SPEAKER_01I think her name's Kate Cassidy. She's um what's his name? Cassidy. It's his daughter. God damn, what's his name?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I didn't know the actress's name either.
SPEAKER_01That's gonna drive me nuts anyway.
SPEAKER_00But out of the whole season, this was my favorite scene of hers. I know you don't like her. So I thought she did good as Lilith, though. The little like neck things that she was doing, and just it was my favorite scene of her. Even like the inflection of her voice a couple times.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, she did really well here. I've she's annoyed the hell out of me as Ruby, but I liked her in this scene when she was Lilith and kind of taunting them, kissing Sam.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I didn't expect that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and like your lips are soft. And yeah, you're right. The way she was inflecting, she was doing her voice different. I mean, it was interesting. She made some really interesting choices and it worked. Yeah. I really liked her in this scene.
SPEAKER_01I feel like she also played the line of like still a little bit of the little girl that she's been inhabiting, it seemed like.
SPEAKER_00It was like a cross between that and also acting inhuman. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know, that there was just awkwardness and not quite naturally human gestures and things she was doing. It was really interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she did a really good job.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Especially if this is her, I don't know, but if this is her last episode.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think you told you told me that Genevieve Patalecki takes over the Ruby character at some point. I think at this next season.
SPEAKER_01I think so. So that's what that's what Yeah. That's why I'm wondering if this is her last episode. And I I think I read it was due to like scheduling conflicts with something else, and that's that's why they had to bring somebody else in.
SPEAKER_00That makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Uh, but if this was her last episode, what a way to go out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It was seriously, like she is annoyed the fuck out of me. But this scene, I was just like, yes. And so it kind of made me sad because I was hoping she was going to stay Lilith and we were going to see more of her being Lilith, but yeah, that's not what happens because she gets rid of the goofer dust and the hellhounds come in. Fuck Dean up. Oh my god, yeah. Like I mean, fuck him up.
SPEAKER_01That I remember whatever episode it was where they the hellhound slashed the lady's leg. Yeah. And you were like, damn, they slashed the shit out of him.
SPEAKER_00Those crossroad blues. Yes. Yeah. Like his chest, his legs warding everywhere. I mean, seriously, fuck him up. Yeah. And then she holds her hand out and shoots this bright white light towards Sam, which I guess was supposed to kill him or something.
SPEAKER_01I don't know, because I they all are so fixated on Sam. And then like Gor whoever it was that said he's supposed to lead them all. It's like they're they're so fixated on him. So it's like, I think she just took him out of the situation. She thinks she meant to kill him.
SPEAKER_00But whenever he was okay after she did it, that's when she started acting scared. Oh, you're
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So something was supposed to happen that didn't, whatever it was. Oh shit.
SPEAKER_01I did not pick up on that at all. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00She started acting like scared whenever Sam just kind of was like, what the fuck? And just stood up. She started being like, Oh my God. And then Sam started coming toward her and she bailed like the black, she black smoke vomited into the ceiling vent. That went right over my head. And so I guess the actresses, because we found out last, I think it was it last episode that we found out these demons ride these bodies hard.
SPEAKER_01Dean told us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So she fell the actress's body vessel, whatever you want to call it, I'm guessing, is done for.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was laid right next to Dean's body.
SPEAKER_00It was laid right next to Dean's body. So Sam has Ruby's knife. You know, she bailed out Dean's body and the previous body that Ruby was inhabiting and Lilith bailed out of. They're both on the floor, and it kind of pans down, zooms in through Dean's beautiful green eyes. Jensen did really well. Yet again, he did this in Mystery Spot where his eyes weren't focused on anything. It looked like a dead body. Camera zooms in on it. We go through, there's like smoke and lightning. It seems like it's a thunderstorm. There's chains everywhere. And it zooms down to Dean, and he's like hooked like meat through his shoulder, his rib cage, both of his legs just pulled taut. There's blood all in his mouth, and he's just screaming for help. And he calls out Sam's name, and that's the end of the episode.
SPEAKER_01When he called Sam, I was like, oh God.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Not Daddy. Sam. I mean, isn't Daddy still down there?
SPEAKER_01Daddy. True, but you would think he might have called for Daddy still. Oh, well no, Daddy's down there.
SPEAKER_00I wonder if Daddy is down there because he got out, remember? And all hell breaks loose at the end of the he got out of hell. He came out and helped them kill Azazel. I can't imagine that he willingly went right back down to hell.
SPEAKER_01I guess I just thought he was summoned and went straight back in.
SPEAKER_00I wouldn't have. Yeah, I don't know. What's he doing? What's his spirit doing?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, why isn't he helping them?
SPEAKER_00Where you at you at John Winchester? Maybe he did just go right back to hell. I don't know. This episode was written by Eric Krippy and it was directed by Kim Manners. I kind of thought it was Kim Manners in the beginning. They were doing some close-ups that reminded me of the close-ups we saw in Magnificent 7, the season premiere, and I knew Kim Manners directed the season premiere.
SPEAKER_01He's good though, because it does call for more dramatics with those.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And this is between Sam and Dean.
SPEAKER_00His style is different. Like he doesn't do the exact same thing from episode to episode. So I do I I appreciate that. And this episode needed it because, in my opinion, it was kind of weak. There wasn't a lot of meat to it. Like I feel like this episode could have been chopped down to 30 minutes and it wouldn't have lost all that much, if that makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it wasn't the best uh finale, I would say.
SPEAKER_00It was good. I enjoyed it. Yeah. But if it was like 10-15 minutes shorter, I don't think that it would have lost anything.
SPEAKER_01Right. Like it still left off on a hang uh it still left off on a cliffhanger. But yeah, I think uh it yeah, it was a little too much filler.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, stuff was stretched out, yeah. You know, like the stuff with Lilith, like we got it. She's a devious little child. Yeah. Right. Or give me some more backstory on Lilith, give me some more backstory on Ruby or something. I would have some more backstory on Ruby, especially.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, something like that would have added to it, I think, a little better.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, maybe we'll get more next season.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, hopefully.
SPEAKER_00I mean, there was the writer's strike, who knows logistics behind the scenes, how that ended up affecting this season. It's awesome that they got a decent season. Yeah. Still kudos, but just this isn't gonna be one of my favorites for sure. Whenever we have our finale next next episode. That was No Rest for the Wicked. I love the name. So gore. I mean, obviously, Dean's death was the goriest thing. Yeah. Holy shit. They went all out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It was not great. I mean, it was good. It was good, yeah. But I didn't want to see my guy like that.
unknownCome on.
SPEAKER_00Uh, something I didn't bring up earlier that I did bring up when we were watching the show is that Dean was saying stuff like he was quoting the trickster. Oh, yes, yeah, yeah, yeah. During this episode, talking about you're my weakness and they know it too. My weak spot. Yeah, you're my weak spot. We can't keep sacrificing each other. I we can't be martyrs all the time. And Sam was still just like, no.
SPEAKER_01Which, but that it's so funny because you keep mentioning like Sam just did not get anything from the trickster.
SPEAKER_00Not a goddamn thing. I didn't learn shit. And Dean, like, Dean, like he was too distracted with his beauty. Well.
SPEAKER_01But like you would think like Dean didn't take much out of it either, but all of a sudden, he's like literally saying exactly what the trickster said. Yeah. And it's like, why are you just now bringing this up on 30 hours left? That's when you want to talk about this? Come on, man.
SPEAKER_00I do like that it just was all tying in where Dean Dean's learned the lesson. And he wasn't even the one who went through the lesson plan, so to speak. And Dean's got it. Yeah. So it's just like, come on, Sammy, get with the program. Together, Sam. He's just like, no, no. I love my brother. He's gonna live. I'll do whatever it takes. Yeah. Oh goodness. As far as things to adore, uh like I said, I really adored uh the Lilith, Ruby as Lilith. I adored that scene. I thought the actress, she nailed that. I agree. I I liked that. I enjoyed that.
SPEAKER_01I adore that you adored that.
SPEAKER_00Because you've been hating on her so much. I have not enjoyed her character at all. And I do think it's interesting that the second she was playing a different character is when I was like, ooh.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I guess I just really don't like Ruby.
SPEAKER_01Well, I know I'm curious to see if if Jen Padalecki takes away. I'm gonna like her. Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Is she gonna annoy the fuck out of me? Yeah, we'll see. So, but I was I hope not. As we like Genevieve Padelecki, so I hope she doesn't annoy me as Ruby, but I do not like Ruby, man.
SPEAKER_01I hope not. But as we were watching, I even had I like you didn't say anything, but I was sitting there thinking, like, I hope she kind of likes this little transition of her and how she's playing this. Yeah, I did. So then you mentioned it, I was like, yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I did. I I liked that. I liked that part. Yeah. So yeah, it's just it's just Ruby I don't fucking like. Oh well. I did like everyone.
SPEAKER_01I I adored that, but I also adored that finally the two of them had that, like you just said, the conversation of you're my weak spot.
SPEAKER_00The trickster's the trickster's lesson conversation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and like not so many words, like we're literally too dependent on each other and are so willing to like give ourselves up for each other.
SPEAKER_00Even Bobby was like trying to get in on it. And Dean's like, no, we're not going to be martyrs anymore. This isn't happening anymore. Right. Oh, I totally forgot one of my notes that I wrote down. One of the many. Whenever Sam went to summon Ruby, it was reminiscent of John Winchester in the basement of the hospital summoning Azazel to save Dean. And then we see Sam doing that. I liked that mirror, I guess. Yes. More reference. Uh, I don't know if it was intentional, but whenever we saw when we saw Sam on his knees and the triangle and all of that stuff, I immediately thought of John Winchester. Right.
SPEAKER_01Well, and doing it secretly, not telling his like John didn't tell boys, Sam wasn't telling Dean. Yeah, for sure. It was it was intentional.
SPEAKER_00I I adored that as well. Yes. Kind of that callback because Dean did end up bringing up, you know, dad did this for me, I did it for you. Like, no, we're stopping it here. It's not gonna happen anymore. We've got to stop doing this. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, for the lure, we're going to talk about hellhounds. It says, from what I read, terrifying tales of hellhounds are ferocious dogs, eyes glowing, teeth bared, they wreak vengeance on the population around them and have been the stuff of legend for centuries. It has cemented the place of these mythical beasts in English folklore, but how and why have these accounts of these terrifying marauding of their terrifying marauding spread so far and wide? Question mark.
SPEAKER_00That word's not used enough.
SPEAKER_01I agree.
SPEAKER_00Marauding? When I was reading through this, marauders that's such a good one. Yeah. I don't know a lot of words though. I don't I don't my vocabulary. But like as far as actually using the words I know, I'm not good about that. It's like you use fancier words than I do, but I don't.
SPEAKER_01I just use fucking shit and of balls and it's funny because like spelling and everything was one of my best things in school. Even as I've gotten older, it's like I know so many uh I know all these words, but then it I've I've thought to myself, if somebody asked me to give a definition of it, I'm I would be a mess. Like I could give it to you in a sentence, but I don't know that I could give you an actual definition.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, same. You know?
SPEAKER_01Like define marauder right now. Right. I I don't think I could, but I could give it to you in a sentence and I know what it means. What a failure of our education. No, I'm just kidding. Okay. Now, in 1577, according to one particularly poetic account, a snarling beast broke into a church, rampaged through the conver congregation, and bit the necks of two people who promptly dropped dead. Having traumatized the churchgoers in Bungay and Suffolk, the mystical dog known as Black Shuk. What it's S S H U K. I'm sorry, S-H-U-U-C-K. Shuck? Shuck? What did I say? Suk? All right, well. Black Shuck. Next cropped up on the country's coast in Lythborough. Again, it targeted worshippers bursting through the doors of the Holy Trinity Church before killing a man and a boy and causing the steeple to collapse. The beast left scorched marks on the church door, according to the legend. These claw marks are on the north door of the Holy Trinity Church, and supposedly they are still there to this day. Damn. Stories speak of lonely pets pining for dead masters and packs of hounds led in wild hunts by men on horseback. Hellhounds were reported to appear at the 17th century witch trials. But not all accounts of Black Shuck. Shuck. Right? Yeah. That's what we said, right? Shuck? Not suck. Not today. Shuck. But not all accounts of Black Shuck depict the beast as a ferocious predator. Hold on, I need to adjust. Thank you. Thank you, LA. In Littleport in Cambridgeshire, a shadowy canine is said to have turned protector, rescuing a local girl from an attempted rape by a friar. According to legend, the dog died in the struggle and its ghost was left to wander through the countryside. Now there are similar stories of the Black Dog under other names along the east coast of England. Norwich-based Mr. Stone, who began the interactive mapping project in August to map out where all these stories were located. And he started it in 2015 and said, living in Norfolk, it's probably the most prevailing piece of kids' scary folklore. While the story is largely spread through, of course, word of mouth, the earliest written record of the Hellhound is found in the 11th and 12th century Peterborough Peterborough version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The chronicler wrote that reliable witness it says in quotations, reliable witnesses had seen packs of dogs, again in quotes, jet black, with eyes like saucers and horrible, led in a quotes again, wild hunt by men on horseback, traveling through the woods, stretching between Peterborough and Stamford. Lorna Richardson, a researcher in public archaeology at the University of Umea in Sweden, that's probably said wrong, said folklore was often overlooked when assessing the importance of a landscape or place. There are lots of different takes on this dog and legend, as Nick's map has shown, but it spreads into Europe and back in time. And so this other article I thought was kind of interesting that a London-based archaeology group unearthed the bones of a gigantic dog from a shallow grave about 20 inches deep in the ruins of Leiston Abbey in Suffolk. And archaeologists estimate that the canine stood more than seven feet tall on its hind legs. Damn. It's bigger than Jared Potalaki. It is. And weighed about 200 pounds. It was led by Dig Advent, I'm sorry, Dig Ventures. Researchers believe the canine bones likely date to when the Abbey was active, so are likely medieval, but they are awaiting confirmation from testing. Due to the size and date of the bones, many have speculated that these large canine remains could be connected to the legend of Black Shuck. In legend, devil dogs guard the entrance of the underworld and the grounds of graveyards. They also hunt lost souls and protect a supernatural treasure.
SPEAKER_00Supernatural?
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_01Do your thing. In European folklore, seeing a hellhound or hearing it howl is seen as an omen of doom or cause of death. Hellhounds show up in many cultures and have many names, including the three-headed Cerberus in Greek mythology, Anubis in Egyptian mythology, Garmer, and that's probably wrong, and Norse mythology, Pero Negro in Latin America, and Black Shuck in England. Most recently, hellhounds were used in fiction in Hound The Hound of the Baskervilles. That's Sherlock. Right. The Grim in the Harry Potter series, and in movies like The Omen and Cujo. Though abusing about the earthly remains of legendary creature cryptid is always fun. They say this giant skeleton recently found at least an abbey is likely the remains of an abbot's faithful canine companion or a hunting dog. At best, the sightings of this huge domesticated dog by superstitious people may have sparked the rumors about Black Shuck. I'm sorry, I don't know any dog that stands seven feet. Seven feet, yeah. Like maybe in length, if you're trying to make it more believable, but seven feet tall?
SPEAKER_00No. Like if it's but I it's I thought it was saying like if it's on its hind legs, so I think it did mean like Oh, you're right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Oh, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_00Well, still still that's still insane.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Seven feet? I don't like it.
SPEAKER_01I don't want to meet that dog. And I love dogs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's interesting. Yeah. Well, to close it out, when Dean and Sam were trying to ditch Bobby, and Bobby caught them and had that plastic piece of the car so they couldn't leave. Love it. Whenever Dean was trying to say, you know, you know, it's it's we're brothers, blah, blah, blah. Bobby told them, family don't end in blood boy.
SPEAKER_01That's right. I love that. I loved that.
SPEAKER_00You know I love Bobby. Thank you for listening to this episode of Denim Wrapped Nightmares, a supernatural podcast. End-to-end production is by Burley Land. Music is by David Fesleyan.
